GHOST SHIPS
The Historic Dockyard, Chatham Kent
25-28 SEPTEMBER
In memory of the 40th anniversary of the closure of this former royal dockyard, this collaborative project unites hip-hop, kathak dance, spectacular set pieces and the spoken word to shine a light on the lesser-known stories from the Dockyard’s history. Inspired by newly uncovered research and the oral history of those who worked in the Dockyard during its final years, some 150 performers take to the stage in the No 5 Covered Slip, where ships were made and launched for more than 100 years, to create a powerfully charged performance that explores the legacy of colonialism, slavery and the role of the British Empire.

In a world where ever-changing high-end techniques are redefining the lifestyles of “Generation Z”, a game named Black Myth: Wukong, with its exquisite scenarios and Chinese culture genes, has brought about a mania among gaming enthusiasts worldwide.
Within 10 hours of its official release globally, the Triple-A game had over two million concurrent players on Steam. The unexpected success of the game, developed by a private Chinese company over six years, has allowed people to appreciate exotic Chinese traditional culture in addition to the fun and joy of playing the game.
Wukong, or Monkey King, is an iconic figure from Journey to the West—a Chinese classic novel dating back about 500 years. Back to the essence, just as Feng Ji, the game’s producer, said,
“The game is good enough in quality to attract games to soak into the Chinese god-evil story.” An ongoing hot discussion on Reddit’s online game community shows games are “hardworking” on every detail of the novel.
Games combining iconic cultural elements may be regarded as a form of cultural exchange. Indeed, enjoying the game could be a journey to experience the beauty of Chinese culture—its music, landscapes, architecture, clothes, or even folk tales. “Traditional culture is right there, and you’ll like it when you see it,” said the game’s art director, Yang Qi. “What we can do is to give people a closer look through the game.”
China’s abundance of well-preserved historical buildings offered the domestic game developer an innate advantage. Digitally scanning ancient buildings to present them in the game is more cost-saving and provides a better authentic experience.
Of course, a game is a game. China will always welcome travelers from around the world who want to explore and learn more about its profound culture.
As a Reddit user wrote, “I (American) have been waiting so long to have more Chinese influence in the Western game sphere. Chinese culture and mythology are rich. I hope we can get more stuff like this. Would love to go to China someday.”
24. What does the underlined word “mania” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A challenge B. reflection C. craze D. pursuit
25 What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The developer of the game. B. The popularity of the game.
C. The influence of the game. D. The contents of the game.
26. What are the games talking about on Reddit’s online game community?
A. The hard work of producers. B. The description of Chinese culture.
C. The fun of playing the game. D. The plots of Journey to the West.
27. Why is the game popular among players worldwide?
A. It promotes exotic folk tales. B. It protects ancient buildings.
C. It contains traditional Chinese culture. D. It includes breathtaking landscapes.

Yatir forest looks like a normal desert in winter. The only sounds are the buzzing of insects and the occasional roar of a plane. In spring, though, this place bursts with new life. Pink and yellow wildflowers carpet the forest floor; camels and horses graze in open meadows. Foxes, rabbits, fieldmice, and snakes all dwell in Yatir - a human-made oasis on the northwest edge of the Negev Desert, around 30 miles south of Jerusalem.
Planted in the 1960s by the Jewish National Fund (JNF), a non-profit land development agency that manages more than a tenth of the country, Yatir is Israel’s largest planted forest. Had these hills been left alone, they might be covered in low shrubs like Jerusalem sage and hairy bread-grass. Instead, four million trees, 90 percent of them hardy Aleppo pine, spread over almost12 square miles of semi-arid land.
“For us, Yatir is a laboratory where we study the forest’s effect on climate, at the edge of the conditions for forest growth,” says Rotenberg, who joined the project in 2000. “What we learn now about Yatir will be serving a warmer, dryer world in many regions. ”
Fifteen years’ worth of measurements in Yatir, beginning in 2001, do show that the forest takes up a surprising amount of carbon - as much as forests in more humid areas, says Rafat Qubaja, a Palestinian researcher. Semi-arid shrub and grasslands cover nearly a fifth of the planet’s land, some10 million square miles; if they all were planted with trees, the Yatir results suggest, they might absorb around 10 percent of current fossil fuel emissions.
At Yatir, Rotenberg says, “we are always surprised by the ability of trees to survive. ” Even during an extreme drought from 2008 to 2009, when the forest endured 349 straight days without rain, most trees persevered.
“I’m sure if no one touches the forest in 100 years, when you visit here, you’ ll see pine trees standing,” Rotenberg says, “The forest won’t give up easily. ”
28. What can be learned from the Yatir forest?
A. It’s an oasis before 1960. B. It has an energetic spring.
C. It’s the largest planted forest. D. It presents nothing but sounds.
29. What does the Yatir project aim to do?
A. To diversify current species.
B. To conserve a habitat for new life.
C. To stimulate the growth of trees in the forest.
D. To learn the link between the forest and climate.
30. What does the author imply by mentioning semi-arid shrub and grasslands?
A. Further efforts should be invested.
B. More fossil fuel emissions can be absorbed.
C. Trees are vital to absorb carbon emission.
D. It’s hard to measure Yatir’s effect on climate.
31. What’s Rotenberg’s attitude towards the future of Yatir?
A. Unclear. B. Critical.
C. Confident. D. Dismissive.
D
Thousands of fish species - about 2,500 of them named - call the Amazon River home, but scientists estimate nearly half of the marine creatures lurking in the massive stretch of water remain undiscovered.
While studying piranhas (食人鱼) and pacus (淡水白鲳) in an effort to better assess vital fish biodiversity in the river, an international team of researchers has found and identified a new species of pacu, a piranha relative with a plant-based diet and humanlike teeth.
Besides its odd pearly whites, the newfound species has striking orange and black markings - including a bold vertical black bar stretching across its flank (侧面) - that the researchers say resemble the fiery eye symbol for the villain Sauron from “The Lord of the Rings” book and film series. The marks inspired the fish’s name, Myloplus sauron. The researchers hoped the pop culture reference would draw attention to the fish and efforts to protect biodiversity in the Amazon.
The eye-catching fish is not the only animal named for Sauron. A genus of butterflies was found in May 2023 with spots that looked like eyes on its wings, reminding researchers of the well-known symbol from the trilogy (三部曲).
Pacus are important to their ecosystem largely due to their role in spreading seeds through their diet of mostly fruit, which make them vital for the growth of rainforest trees and other plants. The fish tend to spread seeds far from their parent plants, helping to expand the forest and limit disease that easily spreads through crowded trees, said Matthew Kolmann, an assistant professor in the department of biology at the University of Louisville.
By discovering and identifying the species that live in certain ecosystems, researchers will be able to better lead conservation efforts to protect animals that are endangered or at risk, Kolmann said. It is particularly important for areas such as the Amazon that are under threat from habitat destruction, he added. “We run the very real risk of losing thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of species before we know they even exist, and by proxy, not ever understanding how these species contribute to a healthy functioning ecosystem,” Kolmann said. “Inventorying what species are found where, and when, is the first step in any future conservation effort.”
32. Why does scientists investigate piranhas and pacus in the Amazon River?
A. To identify fish multiplicity.
B. To recognize a kind of new fish.
C. To prevent fishes from hurting people.
D. To inspire varied diet on people all over the world.
33. What can we learn from the genus of butterflies mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. They are biologically similar to the piranhas.
B. They engage the researchers’ interest in the trilogy.
C. They have fiery eyes on their wings indicating poison.
D. They get their name for the same reason with some fish.
34. What role do pacus play in the rainforest?
A. Promoting the biodiversity among animals and plants.
B. Maintaining the sustainability of rainforest ecosystem.
C. Consuming fruits from rainforest trees to protect other plants.
D. Removing the disease spreading through trees due to crowdedness.
35. What is the main task of the researchers currently?
A. The prevention of species loss.
B. The conservation of the Amazon.
C. The inclusion of the found species.
D. The protection of piranhas and pacus.

I lived in a small town and I had three best friends, Danny, Mia, and Ruby. We loved to play together after school and our favorite pastime was flying colorful kites in the open field near the large oak tree (橡树).
One sunny Saturday, we met up to play. We all had our kites ready, beautifully decorated with bright colors and patterns. The wind was just right, so it was a perfect day to let our kites soar (翱翔). After a while, we decided to have a competition— who could fly the kite the highest. The field echoed (回响) with our joyful laughter as we each took turns, our eyes gleaming with anticipation. However, as I let my kite fly high up into the sky, a gust of wind blew it off course. It got tangled (使缠结) in the branches of the large oak tree that stood tall in the field. I was disappointed but determined. I decided to climb the tree to rescue my kite. My friends looked at me nervously as I started my climb, the tree towering over them.
As I climbed higher and higher, the others watched with bated breath (屏住呼吸). They were worried but also a little excited. After all, it was quite an adventure to see me climbing so high. Suddenly, I felt something wrong. I was stuck! The branch I was standing on was slippery and I couldn’t seem to move. My friends looked at me with wide, scared eyes. They didn’t know how to help me. They just shouted words of encouragement, assuring me that I could do it.
I tried my best to move, but I was scared and my heart was pounding hard. Suddenly, I lost my footing and fell! My friends gasped in shock. Fortunately, I didn’t fall from a high height, but it was enough to hurt my arm badly. I cried out in pain. Mia and Ruby quickly ran over to me while Danny ran to fetch an adult. I was sobbing, my arm throbbing with pain. My friends were there by my side, comforting me.

C It’s the largest planted forest.
A. Unclear. B. Critical.
C. Confident. D. Dismissive.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. C

【答案】32. A 33. D 34. B 35. C

The Best Teacher Around Us
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The Best Teacher Around Us
In our academic journey, there are countless threads that weave together memories and lessons, but one stands out brightly — Mrs. Li, our English teacher.
Mrs. Li is not just a teacher; she is a beacon of inspiration and dedication. When a student struggled with self-doubt and faced academic challenges, Mrs. Li went above and beyond her teaching duties. She organized after-school tutoring sessions tailored to the student’s needs, patiently breaking down concepts and encouraging him every step of the way. More importantly, she listened — truly listened — to his fears and aspirations, nurturing a sense of self-belief that eventually blossomed into academic excellence.
The significance of Mrs. Li’s actions teaches us that education is not merely about facts and figures; it’s about nurturing the whole person. She is, indeed, the Best Teacher Around Us.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The townsfolk (镇民) soon arrived and their expressions etched with concern and alarm. So stunned were they by the scene that they rushed towards me in a flurry. One of them, a seasoned elder with a knowing gaze, carefully examined my arm and solemnly declared that it might be broken. Without any hesitation, they carried me on the stretcher towards the nearby hospital, their footsteps hurried and determined. These townsfolks and my friends had been making tricks, telling funny stories and making faces, trying their best to make me smile, which seemed to make me feel a little better.
But they failed to make me happy because of the pain. The intense pain had been overwhelming my soul on our way, my hands waving chaotically in the air. After what seemed a century in the hospital, I ultimately made it. Not surprisingly, after the doctor’s examination, I was diagnosed with a fracture and arranged to be hospitalized. Lying on the bed, I stared at those who cared about me, feeling a warm current into my heart. All of a sudden, my friends pulled out a kite, my losing kite! With tears in my eyes, the words, which I had read again and again on the textbook, echoed in my mind. “Without friendship the world is but a wilderness.”——Of Friendship by Francis Bacon
