April 20 marks United Nations Chinese Language Day. On this day people around the world celebrate the Chinese language. Here are two Chinese learners sharing stories of their studies.
Practicing Chinese with Chinese friends
I started taking a short beginners’ course (课程) in Chinese when I was in the UK. When I came to China, I started to use an App on my phone called hello Chinese. I find reading the small stories on there really helpful. I first read them with pinyin and the Chinese characters (汉字) and then I’ll read them again with just the characters.
Also, going out for dinner with my Chinese friends can be a good way to learn. In a social setting. I’m a bit more confident to practice speaking naturally spoken Chinese.
David House. UK
Chinese can make language simpler (简单)
When I worked at Tsinghua University, one of my jobs was translating information from Chinese to English. Each day I would find something new and interesting about Chinese. Chinese can be emotive (有感染力的) and often give out information more concisely (简洁地) than English. For example, a Chinese sign on campus might read “疫情期间隔坐,人人有责。” But the English sign would read: “During the pandemic, please sit apart from each other. We are all responsible for doing our part.” The English version is much longer and not as simple.

What should you do if there’s an earthquake in school? How can you protect yourself when you are stuck in a stampede (奔逃). The National Day of Education on Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students (NDESEMSS) offers you a good chance to learn about safely.
It is on Monday of the last week of March every year and the theme is to give students more knowledge about safety and make their lives safe.
A survey (调查) done by the China Youth and Children Research Center showed that school accidents kill more primary and middle school students than anything else. The main accidents come from the stampede, earthquakes, tires and sports injuries.
What can you do to keep yourself safe. Staying calm is the first and most important rule when you are facing accidents. But different accidents have different self-protection advice.
A stampede is possible anywhere. The larger a crowd gets, the more likely a stampede is to come. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves.
Earthquakes are common natural disasters (灾难). When you feel the ground shake, crouch down and stay under a desk. You should stay indoors until the shake stops. If you are outdoors, don’t stay near buildings, trees or power lines.
When there’s a fire, follow the teachers’ instructions, use 3 piece of wet cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you won’t breathe in (吸入) smoke and leave the classroom quickly.
13. When is NDESEMSS?
A. On March 28 every year.
B. On the first Monday of March.
C. At the beginning of the school term.
D. On Monday of the last week of March.
14. When you are facing accidents, the key rule is to ________.

With their long tusks (象牙), elephants look strong. However, they also make the animal in danger. People kill (杀死) many of them for their tusks. People make elephant tusks into crafts (工艺品) and jewelry and sell them to rich people. But can these priceless body parts grow hack? The answer is no, Live Science said. In fact, the elephants’ tusks are part of their teeth. It is similar (相似的) to your teeth. If you lose a tooth, you will never grow a new one.
Elephants use their tusks to protect themselves, lift things, dig for water and gather food. But losing the tusk will not kill them. How they lose the tusk is what matters. Usually, people get tusks by culling (限量捕杀), which means killing old and weak elephants.
They also take tusks from the elephants that have died naturally.
However, these sources aren’t enough to keep up with the need for tusks. So, some poachers (偷猎者) kill healthy elephants to get the tusks. About 27000 elephants are killed by poachers each year, according to National Geographic.
As a result of poaching, some African elephants have gradually evolution (进化) without tusks. This has helped them avoid being killed. In Mozambique, about 90 percent of African elephants were killed for their ivory and meat from 1975 to 1992, National Geographic reported.
Scientists found that about a third of younger females-the generation born after 1992-never developed tusks.
