But it will be open to the public for the first time in two years on Sunday, the 2nd of April. The opening times are from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. You’ll be able to visit it all through the summer until the 1st of October, when it will be closed again. It’s well worth a visit. You’ll need a whole day just to wander around its splendid rooms. Of particular interest is the Dining Room in the West Wing with its fascinating collection of china, dating back to the 17th century. You should also take advantage of its wonderful grounds. You can even have your lunch in the open-air restaurant behind the castle, a setting with no air conditioning. Castle Howard is a great day out for all the family with its reasonable prices too! For a family tour, the children get in free of charge. That’s all for today, listeners. But don’t miss next week’s program.

Aisha is the founder of The Smile Project, a non-profit organization designed to spread joy in communities and educational institutions. Aisha from the age of 17 has set out on a journey to find the true meaning of happiness. There was no adviser or guide reaching out to help her define what qualifies as “happiness” and what doesn’t. She may continue to pursue it but is confident that happiness lies in things that are not only small but simple.
The campaign of The Smile Project began in the late autumn of 2021 as Aisha drove home from school. “It was unusually warm for that time of year and I had my windows down and my radio up. I couldn’t tell you a single song that was on the radio, but I remember I was happy,” she recalled. “It was more than that, though. Most days I would have just felt the emotion of joy, smiled, and moved on.”
“I got home and I did what any 17-year-old teenager would do when they think they have a life-changing message to communicate with the public. I posted a social media update starting, ‘Day1: Happiness is…those perfect car rides where the radio just plays all the right songs.’”
As day 1 turned into day 2, 3, 4 and now nearly 3300 consecutive days of finding joy, The Smile Project has grown into a full-grown happiness campaign with one simple mission: share joy.
Aisha started writing down what made her happy each day. One “Happiness is” at a time. This practice of writing daily joy grew into “The Smile Project”. She has inspired many across the globe to pause, reflect, and find that one joy that may have brightened up the day.

NASA has developed a global sea level change website, which includes information on projected sea level rise through the year 2150 for coastlines around the world, as well as predictions of how much flooding a coastal community or region can expect to see in the next 30 years.
The Defense Department apply the sea level rise data to its plans to predict and respond to threats posed to its facilities by the effects of rising oceans. Similarly, the State Department uses the information for activities ranging from disaster preparedness to long-term adaptation planning to supporting partners around the world in related efforts.
“We are at a moment of truth in our fight against the climate crisis. The science must serve as the bedrock upon which decision-making is built,” said Assistant Secretary-General Selwin Hart, special adviser to the United Nations secretary-general on climate action and just transition.
NASA-led data analyses have demonstrated that between 1970 and 2023, 96% of countries with coastlines have experienced sea level rise. The rate of that global rise has also accelerated, more than doubling from 0.08 inches (0.21 centimeters) per year in 1993 to about 0.18 inches (0.45 centimeters) per year in 2023.
As the rate of sea level rise increases, millions of people could face the related effects sooner than previously projected.
Data issued earlier this year found that Pacific Island nations will experience at least 6 inches (15 centimeters) of sea level rise in the next 30 years. The number of high-tide flood days will increase by an order of magnitude for nearly all Pacific Island nations by the 2050s.
“The data is clear: Sea levels are rising around the world, and they’re rising faster and faster,” said Ben Hamlington, a sea level researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California and head of the agency’s sea level change science team. “Having the best information to make decisions about how to plan for rising seas is more essential than ever.”
8.What does the State Department employ data from NASA to do?
A.Bring sea level rise under control.
B.Plan short-term teamwork with partners.
C.Design activities to prepare against disasters.
D.Predict the potential threats of climate change.
9.What does the underlined word “accelerated” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Sped up. B.Refreshed. C.Shown up. D.Transformed.
10.What does Ben Hamlington intend to explain?
A.Sea level will go up faster than ever.
B.Information from NASA is of great value.
C.NASA needs to decide on how to stop sea level rise.
D.It’s necessary to make plans for seawater improvement.
11.What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Problem of Rising Sea Level Needs to be Solved Badly
B.NASA Makes New Breakthroughs in Many More Fields
C.NASA Data Helps International Community Prepare for Sea Level Rise
D.Scientific Departments Do Research into Ocean Issues and Solutions
【答案】8.C 9.A 10.B 11.C

根据第二段中“Similarly, the State Department uses the information for activities ranging from disaster preparedness to long-term adaptation planning to supporting partners around the world in related efforts.(同样,国务院将这些信息用于从备灾到长期适应规划,再到支持世界各地合作伙伴开展相关工作等活动)”可知,国务院运用NASA提供的信息设计备灾活动。故选C项。
划线词句后文“more than doubling from 0.08 inches (0.21 centimeters) per year in 1993 to about 0.18 inches (0.45 centimeters) per year in 2023.(从1993年的每年0.08英寸(0.21厘米)增加到2023年的每年约0.18英寸(0.45厘米),翻了一倍多)”说明全球海平面上升的速度在加快,从而推知划线词句“The rate of that global rise has also accelerated(全球海平面上升的速度也在accelerated)”其中划线短语应为“加快,加速”的意思,与A项同义。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Having the best information to make decisions about how to plan for rising seas is more essential than ever.(掌握最好的信息来制定如何应对海平面上升的决策,比以往任何时候都更加重要)”可知,Ben Hamlington想解释NASA提供的信息很有价值。故选B项。
通读全文,根据第一段“NASA has developed a global sea level change website, which includes information on projected sea level rise through the year 2150 for coastlines around the world, as well as predictions of how much flooding a coastal community or region can expect to see in the next 30 years.(美国国家航空航天局开发了一个全球海平面变化网站,其中包括到2150年全球海岸线海平面上升的预测信息,以及未来30年沿海社区或地区预计会出现多少洪水的预测)”和第二段“The Defense Department apply the sea level rise data to its plans to predict and respond to threats posed to its facilities by the effects of rising oceans. Similarly, the State Department uses the information for activities ranging from disaster preparedness to long-term adaptation planning to supporting partners around the world in related efforts.(国防部将海平面上升的数据应用到其计划中,以预测和应对海平面上升对其设施造成的威胁。同样,国务院将这些信息用于各种活动,从备灾到长期适应规划,再到支持世界各地的合作伙伴开展相关工作)”可知,本文主要讲述了美国国家航空航天局开发了一个全球海平面变化网站,为国际社会采取那些应对海平面上升的各种工作提供宝贵信息。C项“NASA数据帮助国际社会为海平面上升做好准备”为最佳标题。故选C项。

For as long as there’s been an intelligence quotient (IQ) test, there’s been argument over what it measures. Do IQ scores show a person’s intellectual capacity, which supposedly remains unchangeable over time? Or is the IQ exam really an achievement test that’s subject to fluctuations (波动) in scores? The findings of a new study add evidence to the latter one: IQ seems to be a standard of acquired knowledge that progresses in fits and starts.
The researchers at University College London report documenting significant fluctuations in the IQs of a group of British teenagers. The researchers tested 33 healthy teenagers between the ages of 12 and 16 years. They repeated the tests four years later and found that some teens improved their scores by as much as 20 points on the standard of IQ measurement.
“We were very surprised,” Cathy Price, who led the study, said. She had expected changes of a few points. “But we had individuals that had big fluctuations and changed from an IQ of 100 to an IQ of 127,” she added. Price and her colleagues used brain scans to confirm that these big fluctuations in performance were not occasional, or just an accident.
As we know, there are lots of factors that may explain changes in IQ. Though this study did not attempt to prove them, lots of former research has found that educational environment is key. Some researchers have found that strict academic curricula lead to improved IQ scores. Teens’ personalities, career morals and the home environments are important, too.
“This study should make educators and parents think twice. It should warn them of assuming that one low IQ score, at one time, is showing all that an individual is capable of,” Stephen Ceci, a professor at Cornell University, said. “Although many researchers still say there’s loads of evidence to show that IQ scores do reveal something essential about a child’s intellectual gifts, there’s a consensus(共识) that one test is not deterministic. It can’t accurately assess a person’s talents or future potential.”
12.Why does the author list questions in paragraph 1?
A.To introduce a new theory. B.To celebrate the study’s success.
C.To explain the concept of IQ. D.To promote the standard of IQ.
13.What can we learn from Cathy Price’s statement?
A.She was satisfied with the study’s results.
B.She was doubtful about the study’s results.
C.The study’s results were just accidental phenomena.
D.The study’s results were inconsistent with her expectations.
14.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Factors that may lead to changes in IQ. B.The benefits of boosting IQ scores.
C.The strategies for enhancing IQ scores. D.Experiments conducted to study IQ.
15.What does Stephen Ceci think of educators and parents’ thoughts of IQ scores?
A.They make kids more sensitive. B.They are wrong.
C.They are believable. D.They help kids improve IQ scores.
【答案】12.A 13.D 14.A 15.B
根据第一段中“For as long as there’s been an intelligence quotient (IQ) test, there’s been argument over what it measures. Do IQ scores show a person’s intellectual capacity, which supposedly remains unchangeable over time? Or is the IQ exam really an achievement test that’s subject to fluctuations (波动) in scores? (只要存在智力商数 (IQ) 测试,就一直存在关于它测量什么的争论。智商分数显示一个人的智力能力,这种能力据说随着时间的推移是不可改变的吗?还是智商考试实际上是一个成绩测试,分数会随波动而变化?)”可知,作者通过列出关于IQ测试的问题来引入一个长久以来的争论,即IQ测试到底衡量的是什么。因此推断作者这样做的目的是为了引出一种新的理论或观点,即IQ可能不是固定的,而是可变的。故选A 。
根据第三段中Cathy Price的陈述““We were very surprised,” Cathy Price, who led the study, said. She had expected changes of a few points. “But we had individuals that had big fluctuations and changed from an IQ of 100 to an IQ of 127,” she added. (“我们非常惊讶,”领导这项研究的凯茜·普赖斯说。她原本预计只有几分的变化。“但我们有些人的波动很大,智商从100分变成了127分,”她补充道)”可知,她对研究结果感到惊讶,因为这些结果与她的预期不符。故选D。
14.主旨大意题。根据第四段“As we know, there are lots of factors that may explain changes in IQ. Though this study did not attempt to prove them, lots of former research has found that educational environment is key. Some researchers have found that strict academic curricula lead to improved IQ scores. Teens’ personalities, career morals and the home environments are important, too. (正如我们所知,有许多因素可能解释智商的变化。尽管这项研究并未试图证明它们,但许多以往的研究发现教育环境是关键。一些研究人员发现严格的学术课程会导致智商分数提高。青少年的性格、职业操守和家庭环境也很重要。)”可知,本段主要讨论了可能导致IQ变化的因素,包括教育环境、个性、职业道德和家庭环境等。故选A。
根据最后一段““This study should make educators and parents think twice.
In the 1920s, Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik observed a strange thing. While dining out, she was impressed by the complex orders the waiters were able to remember at one time. 1 This observation gave rise to the study of what would become known as the Zeigarnik Effect.
The Zeigarnik Effect refers to our tendency to remember incomplete or interrupted tasks better than completed ones. At first glance the Zeigarnik Effect can seem like a handy adaptation: It’s good to remember the things we need to do, and it’s a positive thing to want to finish the things we start. 2
First, each incomplete task your brain reminds you about takes up a bit of your attention, making it harder to concentrate on whatever you’re currently working on. Second, even if we manage to physically disconnect from work, the Zeigarnik Effect ensures that our unfinished tasks follow us home. They bring trouble to our vacations, our weekends, and even our sleep. 3
So what can you do about it?
Write your tasks down. Your brain is a terrible filing system. Instead of keeping tasks in your head, make a habit of writing them down as soon as they come to you.
4 Make a plan for tomorrow before you end the work day so your unfinished tasks don’t remain in your mind after-hours.
Don’t forget to look back at how far you’ve come. 5 Therefore, review your completed tasks at the end of every week to celebrate what you’ve already.
A.Establish a work shutdown routine.
B.Have a system for expanding your job skills.
C.The problem when it comes to our productivity is two-fold.
D.Yet when customers checked out, these were totally forgotten.
E.We always quickly forget everything we’ve already accomplished.
F.We need a way to mentally disconnect in our hours away from work.
G.You have to actually complete all of your tasks to feel mental relief from it.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.F 4.A 5.E
1.根据空前“In the 1920s, Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik observed a strange thing. While dining out, she was impressed by the complex orders the waiters were able to remember at one time. (20世纪20年代,俄罗斯心理学家Bluma Zeigarnik观察到一件奇怪的事情。外出就餐时,服务员一次就能记住的复杂订单给她留下了深刻印象。)” 可知,空前介绍心理学家Bluma Zeigarnik观察到的一个现象,故D项“然而,当顾客结账时,这些都被完全遗忘了。”符合,此空继续描写观察到的这一现象,与前文构成转折关系,故选D项。
2.根据空前“At first glance the Zeigarnik Effect can seem like a handy adaptation: It’s good to remember the things we need to do, and it’s a positive thing to want to finish the things we start. (乍一看,蔡加尼克效应似乎是一个方便的适应;记住我们需要做的事情是件好事,想要完成我们开始的事情是一件积极的事情。)”以及后文“First, each incomplete task your brain reminds you about takes up a bit of your attention, making it harder to concentrate on whatever you’re currently working on. Second, even if we manage to physically disconnect from work, the Zeigarnik Effect ensures that our unfinished tasks follow us home.
3.根据空前“They bring trouble to our vacations, our weekends, and even our sleep.
4.根据空后“Make a plan for tomorrow before you end the work day so your unfinished tasks don’t remain in your mind after-hours. . (在你结束一天的工作之前,为明天制定一个计划,这样你的未完成任务就不会在下班后留在你的脑海中。)”可知,空后提到制定第二天的计划,使自己精神上不被未完成的任务影响,故A选项“建立停工程序。”符合,提到建立停工程序即设定计划。故选A项。
5.根据空后“Therefore, review your completed tasks at the end of every week to celebrate what you’ve already.

Max arrived at an office, for his first interview. He used to live with his parents. He was frustrated with his parents blaming him for every little thing he did at home.
While waiting for the interview, he was thinking, “Only if I succeed in today’s interview will I say goodbye to my parents’ house and settle down in the big city, which will let me avoid having to listen to my parents’ complaints about little things all the time.”
He started thinking about little things his parents used to blame him for— How his mother asked him to make his bed after he woke up. If he left the bathroom door open, his mother would ask him to close the door and before that check if the tap was turned off properly. How his father asked him to switch off the fan or light switch before he left. How his mother always blamed him for not keeping things at the right places.
While thinking about all these, he thought, “Why should I listen to their words? Why should I do all these? If I get a job, I will definitely leave their home.”
When looking around, Max saw that there were many candidates (应试者) sitting in that office. He saw that the light in the office was still on and it was ten o’clock in the morning. Remembering his father’s words, he got up and switched off the light. When he saw that water was falling from the water cooler kept at the office, he went to turn off the tap properly.
It was time to go up to the second floor for the interview, everyone went upstairs in turn. On the way up the stairs, a chair stood in the way, and the other candidates bypassed it, but Max removed it, set it aside, and walked to the second floor.
Now, as Max waited outside, he saw the candidates in front of him keep going in and coming out immediately. After talking to these people, he learned that the interviewers didn’t ask them anything.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

One possible version:
It was Max’s turn to be interviewed. He went inside and passed his file to the interviewers. After looking at his file, an interviewer asked, “When are you joining?” A wave of surprise flooded into Max’s mind. Looking at his face, the interviewer said, “Today, in interviews, no one was asked anything. We noticed everyone came but no one switched off the tap or light except you. You have good values and habits. This is what we evaluate most.”
After the interview, Max reached home and hugged his parents. He told them about the interview and the result. He apologized to them and thanked them. He said, “In my life, my degree has less value in comparison to the lessons I have learned from you because of your strict demand on small matters. Today, I come to know that not only education but good habits and values have their own importance if I want to succeed in life. A person who doesn’t have self-disciplines, no matter how smart he is, can’t succeed in his life.”
