The Most Beautiful Seas in the World
Considering the most beautiful seas, it’s worth paying attention to the southern water bodies, although, without doubt, each sea is attractive and charming in its own way.
The most beautiful sea in the world-Coral Sea
If we consider the beauty of the seas, and not their coasts, then the first place should be given to the Coral Sea. The Coral Sea is a dangerous place for sailors, and at the same time one of the most beautiful places for diving, and all this is due to the unique coral reefs that are at its bottom.
The second place-Red Sea
The Red Sea is a truly magnificent place. It has rich fish stocks, a huge number of amazing creatures live in it, and the underwater world is exceptionally rich. Many corals live only here, and divers are strictly forbidden to break them.
The third place-Caribbean
This is the warmest exotic(异域风情的)place where not only the sea but also the plants on its coast please the eye. It’s located between North and South America, and on its shore there are a number of small countries. Many tourists come here, because rest here is inexpensive, and you can experience different cultural traditions.
The fourth place -Bali Sea
The Bali Sea is located in the Pacific Ocean. This is another paradise(天堂)for relaxation, receiving many tourists every season. The sea has a warm climate, creating ideal conditions for relaxing on the islands of Java, Sulawesi, Sumbawa, Madura.
21. For which group of people is the Coral Sea most suitable?

“Women do not own lands in my community except if they are able to buy one, as most of the lands in a family are passed on to the male children. So a woman who intends to own a land must be prepared to work hard.”
Monica Maigari was born and raised in her native community of Madakiya, located in the southern part of Kaduna state of northwestern Nigeria. In 2014, her achievements as a farmer, community leader, and women’s advocate won her recognition as an Oxfam Female Food Hero. Since that time, she has deepened her involvement in the local community while sharing her skills with influential audiences.
Monica has been a farmer for more than 30 years. Despite great challenges faced by rural women farmers, such as land accessibility, labour costs, market access, and climate change, she has achieved great success. She started with a small field for crop cultivation in 1984 and then expanded into various crops and livestock farming. Like all farmers in her region, Monica’s agricultural productivity is threatened by climate change. She is leading her community in adapting to the effects while challenging policymakers to act.
In November 2014, out of the 1,280 contestants nationwide, Monica won the Female Food Hero title for her innovative and leadership qualities. Against local practices, she chose to purchase farmland with her prize money in order to reduce the cost of renting a land and help plough back (把……再投资)that money into her agribusiness.
She describes the FFH as being a truly life changing experience, “I acquired several skills. I was taught the value chain. My productivity and income has steadily increased. I am more financially stable. Since her recognition from Oxfam, Monica has been in demand as a speaker throughout Nigeria and abroad, and she is now able to educate other female farmers. Realizing this yet always humble (谦虚的), Monica simply describes herself as “a hard-working woman devoted to encouraging women especially those less privileged to go into agriculture”.
24. What does the author intend to stress in Paragraph 1?
A. Monica’s achievements as a women’s advocate.
B. The challenges of having lands faced by women.
C. The role of male children played in possessing lands.
D. The importance of women’s involvement in agriculture.
25. Why was Monica chosen as a Food Hero?
A. She used her money to buy farmland.
B. She was creative and had strong leadership.
C. She served as a public speaker at home and abroad.
D. She owned lands in a community where women typically do not.
26. Which of the following can best describe Monica?
A. Shy but strict. B. Creative but proud.
C. Devoted and inspiring. D. Hard-working and sensitive.
27. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Women’s Land Rights in Madakiya

Turn on a light outside at night, and it won’t be long before lots of insects start gathering around it. This behavior has led to a popular comparison for attraction, “like a moth to a flame.” However, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, it turns out that insects aren’t “attracted” to artificial lights, but rather confused by it.
The new finding is based on a theory about insect orientation (定位). Due to their small and lightweight bodies, insects experience less air resistance, allowing them to achieve higher accelerations (加速度), which in turn makes it challenging for them to sense up and down during flight. So, they typically rely on stable light sources like the moon and stars to orient themselves at night, keeping the sky at their backs to stay upright. However, the introduction of artificial lights confuses their natural sense of direction. The insects you see circling street lights, in other words, are probably lost.
To reach these conclusions, scientists used high-resolution cameras to film insects flying around artificial lights in Costa Rica. They also attached tiny sensors to insects and filmed motion-capture videos of them in flight. In this way, researchers can slow down the insects pace and study their movements in greater detail. The videos showed insects turning their backs toward sources of artificial light — even at the price of flipping over or crashing.
This can be dangerous for insects, as circling around artificial lights can put them at risk from enemies, exhaustion, and starvation, causing many to die before morning. Night artificial light is a major cause of insect population loss, which could severely impact crop pollination and food supplies for larger animals, including humans. “Insects have been flying around for 370 million years, and it’s just in the last 150 years that it’s really gone wrong for them,” says entomologist Samuel Fabian of Imperial College London. “If we don’t want to influence large amounts of insect populations, we should not have lights shining up into the sky.”
28 What have scientists found out about insects?
A. Artificial lights can disturb their sense of direction.
B. Their populations are in decline.
C. They often fly quickly during the night.
D. Their eyesight is well adapted to light changes.
29. How did the scientists conduct the experiment?
A. By detecting the living environment of insects.
B. By monitoring the insects’ brain activity during flight.
C. By making videos to study insects’ movements.
D. By building models to analyze insects’ motion patterns.
30. Why does the author mention Fabian’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To stress the importance of insects to food supplies.
B To appeal to people to reduce light pollution.
C. To show the reasons for insects flying around lights.
D. To explain the effects of insects’ death on human life.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. How Artificial Lights Impact the Ecosystem
B. What Leads to the Loss of Insect Populations
C. How Insects Orient Themselves in the Flight
D. Why Insects are Attracted to Lights at Night
D
It’s a balmy summer day at the beach — you’re lying in the sun, enjoying the water and hanging out with friends. But suddenly, you start to feel a familiar pain behind your temples (太阳穴), and you wonder: why do you always get headaches when it’s hot out?
Some research does suggest that people’s rates of headaches rise when temperatures go up. However, experts like Dr. Nolan Pearson, a neurology fellow who specializes in headache at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said it’s important to look beyond heat to find the reason for summertime headaches. “Weather is very common in the top five triggers (诱因) that people do report. But, I would speculate that it might be actually due to things that go along with hot weather rather than the heat itself.”
Most research on heat and headaches only shows a connection between the two. For example, a study might look at hospital admission rates for headaches during different months of the year and find headaches are more common in summer. But that doesn’t prove that heat directly caused those headaches. There could be other environmental and lifestyle changes that happen during the summer — like air quality, light exposure or activity levels. Therefore, Pearson recommends that each person with headaches hone in on these possible triggers, since these have more research behind them and may be easier to handle than the heat itself.
Poor air quality is a well-known headache trigger, and one common effect of heat waves is that they tend to make air quality worse. Heat can cause some chemical elements in the air to transform into ozone (臭氧) and other harmful substances. In addition, wind and air pressure systems driven by hot weather can make pollutants linger over cities, rather than float away.
Warmer months also come along with longer days and greater UV (紫外线) exposure. Light exposure and headaches have a complicated relationship, though. While some research suggests that bright light isn’t a headache trigger, people with migraines (偏头痛) are often sensitive to bright lights during an attack. So it might be that a blazing summer sun can make existing headaches worse.
On top of all of that, heat can destroy a person’s sleep schedule. “Good, restful sleep happens most effectively in a colder environment,” Pearson said. When a night of sleep is disturbed — by being overheated, for instance — people are significantly more likely to experience migraines and other headaches.
32. What may be the cause of summertime headaches?
A. The direct effect of heat. B. Changes of living habits.
C. Restful sleep in cool days. D. Chemical elements in the air.
33. What does the phrase “hone in on” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Take advantage of. B. Put up with.
C. Head towards. D. Concentrate on.
34 Which of the following statements is true according to the text?
A. Hospital admission rates for headaches are lower in summer than in winter.
B. Poor air quality is the leading reason that triggers people’s headaches.
C. Pollutants in the air can’t float away due to the destruction of the wind system.
D. Exposure to the sun causes worse condition for people with migraines.
35. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Effective measures in summertime.
B. Major limitations in present research.
C. Detailed analysis of people’s lifestyles.
D. Explanations of experimental methods.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

【原文】The education system in Australia consists of a total of 12 years. Primary schools and high schools are based on the age of the student, so that every room has the same age group, with a student hardly ever having to repeat a year. The students with problems in their studies may be put into special classes. Most of the children start primary school at the age of 5. Then the student goes for secondary school at the age of 12 or 13. Well, the subject of the education system is too broad. Today I’d like to focus on the school system in Australia. The school system in Australia does depend on whether you go to a private or a public school. In the state, there are a lot of private schools, and generally they’re single-sex high schools. The public high schools are generally mixed. All of the private high schools insist that you wear their school uniforms, and that might mean a school tie and a school jacket. However, the public high schools often give you a choice of whether you want to wear a uniform or not. The school classes generally start anywhere between 8:30 and 9 o’clock in the morning, and run until 3:30 in the afternoon, and they’re followed by after-school activities like sports and music and theater. The school year generally starts in the beginning of February, after the summer vacation. The summer vacation lasts about six weeks, and it’s around the Christmas period.

28. What have scientists found out about insects?
B. To appeal to people to reduce light pollution.
C. To show the reasons for insects flying around lights.
D. To explain the effects of insects’ death on human life.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. How Artificial Lights Impact the Ecosystem
B. What Leads to the Loss of Insect Populations
C. How Insects Orient Themselves in the Flight
D. Why Insects are Attracted to Lights at Night
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. D

So, they typically rely on stable light sources like the moon and stars to orient themselves at night, keeping the sky at their backs to stay upright. However, the introduction of artificial lights confuses their natural sense of direction. The insects you see circling street lights, in other words, are probably lost. 故选A项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“To reach these conclusions, scientists used high-resolution cameras to film insects flying around artificial lights in Costa Rica. They also attached tiny sensors to insects and filmed motion-capture videos of them in flight. In this way, researchers can slow down the insects pace and study their movements in greater detail. 【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Insects have been flying around for 370 million years, and it’s just in the last 150 years that it’s really gone wrong for them,” says entomologist Samuel Fabian of Imperial College London. “If we don’t want to influence large amounts of insect populations, we should not have lights shining up into the sky.” (伦敦帝国理工学院的昆虫学家塞缪尔·法比安说:“昆虫已经飞行了3.7亿年,只是在过去的150年里,它们才真正出现了问题。”“如果我们不想影响大量的昆虫种群,我们就不应该让灯光照亮天空。”)”可知,此处法比安说如果我们不想影响大量的昆虫种群,我们就不应该让灯光照亮天空,所以是在呼吁人们减少光污染。故选B项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Tun on a light outside at night, and it won’t be long before lots of insects start gathering around it. This behavior has led to a popular comparison for attraction, “like a moth to a flame.” However, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, it turns out that insects aren’t “attracted” to artificial lights, but rather confused by it.
