II. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Browse through any social-media feed, and before long a cute video will appear. The supply of these ____21____ clips, short parts of videos, is huge. On one social media platform there are 65 million videos tagged (贴标签) # cute. The demand is more ____22____: those videos have been viewed more than 625 billion times.
Long dismissed as girlish and silly, cuteness has recently become a subject of serious ____23____, inspiring scientific research and academic literature, named “Cute Studies”. A new exhibition in London also examined the dominance of cute qualities in culture, bringing together art, games and toys. Cuteness “has ____24____”, says Claire Catterall, the organizer. “It has made its way into almost every element of our lives.”
What do humans perceive to be cute? In the 1940s, Konrad Lorenz, an Austrian zoologist, found that people are ____25____ to babies with big eyes and a small nose, as well as short arms, legs, because they bring joy. So obsessed with these characteristics that cats and dogs may have been ____26____ to bring out those same features. Cartoon characters have evolved as well. ____27____, Mickey Mouse’s arms, legs and nose have shrunk while his head and eyes have become larger.
It was exactly in the 20th century that cuteness dug in its ____28____ claw (爪). Walt Disney brought a parade of wide-eyed creatures across the world. Japanese kawaii culture also went global. After the emergence of mass production, cute toys became ____29____ attainable across the market. Sanrio, the company behind the Hello Kitty brand, ____30____ this trend, generating $3.8 billion in annual sales by producing products on an unmatched scale.
Then with the Internet, cuteness became _____31_____ on demand. People could share amusing content of their children or favorite animals any time. In 2022, more than 90,000 videos of cats were uploaded to a major social media platform every day.
Cuteness has real-world uses — Lovot, a wide-eyed companion robot, responds _____32_____ when hugged. Such an innovation may help relieve _____33_____ among the elderly. Policymakers, too, might employ this power to _____34_____ people’s behaviour. Putting images on bins of sea turtles or dolphins trapped in rubbish has been shown to reduce plastic waste. Mr. Kringelbach says that an appreciation for cute things is a (n) _____35_____ in itself, but it also “has the potential to change the world”. So why not use the power of cuteness to create a better, more loving world?

I wasn’t prepared to be a climate refugee. Not after relocating my family from drought and wildfire California to the “climate shelter” of Asheville N.C. But less than two months after we moved into our delightfully wooded, mild-weather community, we were forced to leave.
On September 26, the hurricane made its way inland from the Gulfof Mexico through Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Along its path, it tore apart community after community. And then it hit western Appalachia. At 2,000 feet above sea level and 300 miles from the coast, Asheville is a place where people went to get away from destructive hurricanes.
That night, I couldn’t sleep. Trees crashed down around my home as emergency alerts sounded on my phone. Power lines went down. Roads flooded. Despite being within a mile of the French Broad River, we were not told to evacuate (撤离) ahead of the storm.
In the morning, after it seemed the worst had passed, a large pine tree crashed onto the roof directly above my young son’s bedroom while he was playing with LEGOs. He was thankfully unharmed, but it drove home the severity of what was happening around us. My young daughter held me tightly saying over and over, “I’m scared.”
It was hard to get information about what was going on across Asheville. Within hours, we lost power, Internet and even cell service. A neighbor told me we could get information on the radio, so I sat in my car to listen to the local radio station’s updates. That’s how I learned that the water wasn’t safe to drink. The treatment plant was under eight feet of water and the distribution pipes had washed away.
When we heard it would take weeks or longer to restore basic services, I made plans for my family to leave town. We were lucky — we lived near the one highway that was open, and had a full tank of gas and a place to go. So on Sunday we left Asheville to stay with family on the Outer Banks.

In sociology, consumption is about so much more than just taking in or using up resources. Humans consume to survive, of course, but in today’s world, we also consume to entertain and amuse ourselves, and as a way to share time and experiences with others. We consume not only material goods but also services, experiences, information, and cultural products. Consumption today is a central organizing principle of social life.
Sociologists recognize that many aspects of our daily lives are structured by consumption. In fact, Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman wrote in the book Consuming Life that Western societies are no longer organized around the act of production, but instead, around consumption. This transition began in the United States in the mid-twentieth century, after which most production jobs were moved overseas, and our economy shifted to retail and the provision of services and information.
As a consequence, most of us spend our days consuming rather than producing goods. On any given day, one might travel to work by car; work in an office that requires electricity, gas, oil, water, paper, and a host of consumer electronics and digital goods; purchase a tea, coffee, or soda; go out to a restaurant; pick up dry cleaning; purchase health and hygiene products at a drug store; use purchased groceries to prepare dinner, and then spend the evening watching television, enjoying social media, or reading a book. Who can break free from it?
Consumption has taken on great importance in the relationships we develop with others. We often organize visits with others around the act of consuming, whether that be sitting down to eat a home-cooked meal as a family, or meeting friends for a shopping excursion at the mall. In addition, we often use consumer goods to express our feelings for others through the practice of gift-giving.
Sociologists also see consumption as an important part of the process of forming and expressing both individual and group identities. In Subculture: The Meaning of Style, sociologist Dick Hebdige observed that identity is often expressed through fashion choices. This happens because we choose consumer goods that we feel say something about who we are. Our consumer choices are often meant to reflect our values and lifestyle, and in doing so, send visual signals to others about the kind of person we are.
So, from the sociological perspective, there’s much more to consumption than meets the eye. In fact, there’s so much to study about consumption that there’s a whole subfield dedicated to it: the sociology of consumption.
43. What was the change in the United States in the mid-twentieth century?
A. A shift to local production. B. A growth of overseas consumption.
C. A focus on retail and services. D. A decline in the value of consumption.
44. The author presents a person’s daily life in paragraph 3 in order to ________.
A. encourage people to spend more time working than consuming.
B show the variety of consumer products available on the market.
C. suggest that producing goods is no longer part of modern life.
D. highlight the constant presence of consumption in people’s life.
45. What can be inferred about consumption in paragraph 4 and 5?
A. It discourages gift-giving. B. It conveys individuality.
C. It defines culture. D. It sets the fashion trends.
46. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The divided opinions on consumption.
B. The effects of consumerism on people’s life.
C. The philosophy of consumption in social life.
D. The balance between consumption and production.

Orangutan treats his wound with a medicinal plant
In a new paper, researchers describe how a male orangutan (红毛猩猩) chewed the leaves of a plant used in traditional medicine and applied them to a wound on his cheek. ____47____
In June 2022, the researchers observed a male Sumatran orangutan, known as Rakus, with a fresh wound on his cheek. ____48____ He chewed the leaves of a plant and then applied the resulting juices directly onto his facial wound. He repeated this behavior for seven minutes and then, as a last step, fully covered the wound with the chewed leaves. He then continued feeding on the plant for 30 minutes. Over the following days, there were no signs of infection. The wound closed within five days.
“What is interesting is that this behavior seems to be intentional and goal-oriented.” says study lead author Isabelle Laumer, a cognitive biologist in Germany. “He precisely applied the plant matter to his wound several times over a prolonged period. ____49____”
Self-medication has been documented in multiple wild primate (灵长类) species, but not applying them to recent wounds. There is only one other study of active wound treatment by great apes. Several years ago, researchers reported one population of chimpanzees in Gabon, applied flying insects to their own wounds. However, the researchers could not identify the insects or make any conclusions about the effectiveness of the treatment.
____50____ Perhaps he accidentally touched a wound while feeding on a plant and experienced its analgesic (镇痛的) effects, causing him to repeat the behavior. It is also possible that Rakus previously learned the behavior from other orangutans, since young orangutans rely on social learning to acquire the skills necessary for adult life.
A. Three days later, they saw an interesting chain of events.
B. And he selectively treated his wound and not any other body parts.
C. Rakus may have observed his mother demonstrating how to treat wounds.
D. Laumer and colleagues do not know how or where this behavior originated.
E. The findings may provide insights into the evolution of this behavior among humans.
F. It’s the first report of suspected wound treatment by a wild animal using a plant with known medicinal properties.
III. Summary Writing
51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Why can’t adults talk normally to babies?
In scientific literature, baby talk is called “parentese”, and is a unique way of communicating with babies. It often involves using repetitive and exaggerated sounds, such as “cooing” and “goo-goo,” along with using diminutive words like “baby,” “binky,” or “blankie.” Adults also tend to speak more slowly and emphasize key words or phrases when engaging in baby talk.
What’s the point of using such a ridiculous style of talking with babies? Why not just talk to a baby with normal speech, like we’d talk to another adult, or even a 5-year-old child? Primarily, we use baby talk to capture the baby’s attention. The dramatic vocalizations and facial expressions serve to engage the child’s focus by being distinct from all the other noise and visual stimuli around the baby. Remember, the brain of a newborn baby is still developing and needs different cues to engage and learn something. Baby talk also helps to establish an emotional connection between the adult and the baby. The gentle tone conveys affection, love, and care. As a result, in a way, it reassures the child by giving him a sense of security.
Interestingly, there was a study where researchers tested 2,329 babies from 16 countries on their preference for this lively vocalization. Babies clearly prefer it when we “ooh” and “coo”. The study also revealed that babies from almost all cultures have an inborn love for baby talk. Baby talk tells the infants, “Hey! This speech is only for you, since you’re special,” and who doesn’t love that? It melts their sweet little hearts and warms ours.
To support your baby’s development, try using baby talk regularly. Use a playful tone, make eye contact, and emphasize key words. These simple actions strengthen bonds and work a lot for their development.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
I wasn’t prepared to be a climate refugee. Not after relocating my family from drought and wildfire California to the “climate shelter” of Asheville, N.C.
36. The author moved to Asheville, N.C. to _______.
A. get closer to the Gulf of Mexico
B. find a new job in South Carolina
C. live near the French Broad River
D. flee California’s drought and wildfire

B. The family decided to stay in the house despite the danger.
C. The family felt alarmed at the sight of the tree crashing down.
D. The family became more at ease about the situation at that time.
38. What can be inferred from paragragh 5?
A. Timely access to information is important during a disaster.
B. The treatment plant is supposed to be built deep underwater.
C. People must depend on neighbors for survival in a disaster.
D. Protecting water resources promotes a sense of community.
39. What is the best title of the passage?

B. show the variety of consumer products available on the market.
C. suggest that producing goods is no longer part of modern life.
D. highlight the constant presence of consumption in people’s life.

The wound closed within five days.(他咀嚼一种植物的叶子,然后将产生的汁液直接涂在脸上的伤口上。
根据上文““What is interesting is that this behavior seems to be intentional and goal-oriented.” says study lead author Isabelle Laumer, a cognitive biologist in Germany. “He precisely applied the plant matter to his wound several times over a prolonged period.(“有趣的是,这种行为似乎是有意的,是有目标的。该研究的主要作者、德国认知生物学家伊莎贝尔·劳默说。“在很长一段时间内,他多次精确地将植物物质涂在伤口上。)”可知,后文提到猩猩的行为是有目标的,说明治疗针对的是伤口这一目标。故B选项“他有选择性地治疗了他的伤口,而不是身体的其他部位”符合语境,故选B。
【50题详解】
根据后文“Perhaps he accidentally touched a wound while feeding on a plant and experienced its analgesic (镇痛的) effects, causing him to repeat the behavior. It is also possible that Rakus previously learned the behavior from other orangutans, since young orangutans rely on social learning to acquire the skills necessary for adult life.(也许他在吃植物时不小心碰伤了伤口,体验到了植物的止痛效果,导致他重复了这种行为。也有可能Rakus之前从其他猩猩那里学到了这种行为,因为年轻的猩猩依靠社会学习来获得成年生活所必需的技能)”可知,本段主要说明了研究人员就猩猩这一治疗行为的起因进行了猜测。故D选项“Laumer和他的同事们不知道这种行为是如何或从哪里开始的”符合语境,故选D。
