In 1999, when she was 23, Roxanne Olson left her home in Eureka, California to seek a dream job as an assistant producer on a cross-country dance tour. But halfway through the tour, she got some terrible news—her father had died of a sudden heart attack. “I was too young to even understand that death was part of my world. And so it was a crazy shock,” Olson shared.
Olson was able to get a plane ticket home, but when she arrived at Chicago O’ Hare International Airport, things went wrong. Someone had run through a security checkpoint with a bag, forcing the closure of part of the airport, because workers thought it would bring safety problems. “It turned out there were over 6,000 people evacuated (疏散) from the O’ Hare airport that day,” Olson said. She remembered standing on the sidewalk, surrounded by thousands of strangers as helicopters flew overhead.
“It was the most crazy thing to be happening on this day,” she said. After hours of waiting, Olson and the other travelers were allowed back in. But the airport was in complete chaos (混乱). “I didn’t know where to go, who to call, what to do. And it kind of felt like everybody was busy just running around,” Olson said.
As she stood there, feeling helpless, a woman approached her. “She walks up to me and she says, ‘I’m here to help people like you,’” Olson remembered. As the woman led her through the airport, Olson told the woman about her father’s death, and her attempts to return home to California.
“And she just seemed to understand my problem — she talked to whoever the right people were, and she got me on the very first flight out.” Olson made it home that day. She says she’ll never forget the woman who made it possible. “There was something about me that she just saw that I was broken and needed help. And she saved me.”

A recent report from the business advisor McKinsey & Company found that 58 percent of people worked from home at least one day a week in 2022. The office needs to change because the role of the workplace has changed.
The office has suddenly become a choice. It’s really an option. And the office has to be better for someone than working from home. One change office spaces need is more focus on community in the workplace. When you get to the office, if you’re not connecting with anyone else, you might as well not be there. The office should be a place where you’re doing group work.
The office of the future might even help workers with their personal responsibilities. One of the reasons why a lot of people work from home is that they have to take care of the dog or pick up the kids. And so, what if there were animal care in the building? What if there were child care in the building?
Experts believe companies that own the office space should be more active in changing workplaces for the new way of life.
The US General Services Administration (GSA) is the government agency that has been a leading force in establishing what the office of the future will look like. GSA’s Workplace Innovation Lab occupies a 25,000-square-foot space inside the organization’s headquarters in Washington, D. C.
The Workplace Innovation Lab will be open for one year. Workers can try out the latest in workplace furniture and technology and then make comments on their experience.
Some spaces in the lab look like traditional workplaces. Some spaces feel pleasant. Almost everything can be moved around. The air quality is controlled, and technology that is believed to be good for the environment is being tested.
The office of the future needs three qualities. It should he well-designed, serve a purpose and feel pleasant. All of this might mean that the office of the future could feel a little bit more like home.
8. What should people do in the workplace according to the text?
A. Work heart and soul. B. Deal with group work only.
C. Communicate with others. D. Try improving working performance.
9. Which of the following is a probable benefit of future offices?
A. Providing child care services. B. Containing larger workspaces.
C. Allowing flexible schedules. D. Offering traditional furniture.
10. What’s the purpose of the Workplace Innovation Lab?
A. To conduct research on the most comfortable office chairs.
B. To test and gather opinions on workplace improvements.
C. To create a space for employees to relax.
D. To show some traditional office designs.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. What Office of the Future Will Be Like B. Why Future Offices Attract Young People
C. Who Will Work from Home in the Future D. How Will People Work in the Future Office
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. A

The Mars explorer, Curiosity, recently arrived at an area called the Gediz Vallis Channel. Researchers said the area was chosen because evidence suggested that it once held large amounts of liquid water. The term “channel” describes a natural bed that carries water.
Curiosity arrived on Mars in 2012 and began exploring areas around the planet’s huge Gale Hole. Mars is a cold, dry desert today. But the Gale Hole area is believed to have contained a lake once and has shown other evidence of flowing water in the past.
A large shooting star strike about 3.7 billion years ago is believed to have formed the hole. At the time, scientists believe groundwater filled Gale Hole while additional water flowed in from rivers fed by rain or snow. This is thought to have formed Gale Hole’s large lake.
Curiosity will be searching for evidence of ancient water in areas around Gediz Vallis Channel, with studies centered on how the channel formed. Scientists say they do not think wind formed it because the sides of it are too high. From space, the channel looks like an ancient riverbed. Later, the channel was filled with large rocks and other forms of remains.
Curiosity’s new exploring activities can provide scientists with a new way to study how the presence of both water and the chemical materials required for life changed over time. The first formations to be examined contain sulfates, which are salty minerals often deposited when liquid water changes into gas and goes into the atmosphere.
Movements of water and minerals can also produce a material called sediment (沉积物), materials that settle on the bottom of bodies of water over time. Examinations of these sediments can provide additional evidence of past water and possible life. Materials collected by Curiosity are expected to be returned to Earth in the near future.
12. What can he learned about the Gediz Vallis Channel?
A. It was an area suitable to live in. B. It is easy for Curiosity to reach.
C. It might hold water at one time. D. It was the source of all liquid water on Mars.
13. How was Gale Hole formed probably?
A. By serious landslides. B. By a huge volcano eruption.
C. By strong geological movements. D. By the knock of a space object.
14. Which has the closest meaning lo the underlined word “deposited” in paragraph 5?
A. Worn away. B. Left behind. C. Broken up. D. Dug out.
15. What does the author intend to tell us about in the last paragraph!
A. Another sign that water once existed. B. The importance of doing further research.
C. Another region on Mars to explore. D. Plans for Mars exploration in the future.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲火星探测器“好奇号”将在Gediz Vallis Channel周围地区寻找曾今这里存在水的证据。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第一段“Researchers said the area was chosen because evidence suggested that it once held large amounts of liquid water. (研究人员表示,之所以选择该地区,是因为有证据表明它曾经拥有大量的液态水。)”可知,Gediz Vallis Channel曾经可能拥有液态水。故选C项。
13题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第三段“A large shooting star strike about 3.7 billion years ago is believed to have formed the hole. (据信,大约37亿年前的一次大流星撞击形成了这个洞。)”可知,Gale Hole可能是由太空物体的撞击形成的。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第五段“The first formations to be examined contain sulfates, which are salty minerals often deposited when liquid water changes into gas and goes into the atmosphere.(首先要检查的地层含有硫酸盐,这是一种含盐矿物,通常是在液态水变成气体并进入大气时而 。)”可推测,这里指水变成气体进入大气层,而剩下的矿物盐被“留下”在地层。所以猜测deposit表“留下,沉淀”的意思。与B项Left behind(留下)意思一致。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段“Movements of water and minerals can also produce a material called sediment (沉积物), materials that settle on the bottom of bodies of water over time. Examinations of these sediments can provide additional evidence of past water and possible life. Materials collected by Curiosity are expected to be returned to Earth in the near future.(水和矿物质的运动也会产生一种叫做沉积物的物质,这种物质会随着时间的推移沉积在水体底部。对这些沉积物的检查可以为过去的水和可能的生命提供额外的证据。好奇号收集的材料预计将在不久的将来返回地球。)”可知,本段主要讲通过检查沉积物也可证明水时候曾经存在于火星。即对火星是否存在水的另一迹象是通过检查沉积物而得知。故选A项。

It was a sunny August day on a San Diego beach. My best friend, Sam Hanivan, who had learned swimming for four years, and I got ready for a day of boogie boarding (滑浪). Little did we know that this seemingly ordinary day would become an extraordinary event in our memories forever. On that day Sam Hanivan and I almost lost our life.
Our excitement was fueled not only by the hope of enjoying the beach but also by the interesting eight-hour car journey before our arrival.
On arriving, we found lifeguards (救生员) here and there, but we just didn’t think much about that. With boogie boards in hand, Sam and I raced toward the water, unaware of the challenges awaiting us. As ten-year-olds, our only concern was to have fun and enjoy the moment. We spent the day riding the waves, swimming back and forth, our laughter carried far by the ocean wind.
Sam and I shared not only the excitement of the waves but every snack break and moment of rest. However, as the day progressed, unlucky signs appeared.
The weather took a turn, and the ocean waves became choppy (汹涌的). Despite the changing conditions, we continued to enjoy the sea until the playful waves transformed into dangerous huge ones.
At that time, Sam and I found ourselves far from the safety of the beach. Frightened and anxious, we fought against the waves, trying our best to get back to the beach, but the more we fought, the more we were forced into the ocean. In an attempt to get out of the danger, we almost ran out of our energy. At the same time, Sam was comforting me, despite his own danger.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, we saw a lifeguard at a short distance.

Lying on the beach, we were still suffering from the shock.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Suddenly, we saw a lifeguard at a short distance. “Don’t Fight The Waves, Swim Diagonally.” Following the lifeguard’s instructions, we changed our course, swimming diagonally rather than fighting the waves head on. To my delight, Sam, my loyal friend, remained by my side. He kept encouraging me to hold on and his encouragement became my lifeline. More importantly, Sam helped lift me up timely whenever he saw me beginning to sink. As a great swimmer, he could have got out of danger by himself much earlier. However, he kept me company all the time and we were swimming neck and neck. To be frank, without Sam’s company and help, I would have given up a long time ago. Thank Goodness we finally got to the shore.
Lying on the beach, we were still suffering from the shock. What a narrow escape from death! Our determination and persistence paid off in the end! Lying on the beach, we had no strength to stand up. “Thanks a lot! You have saved my life!” I told Sam gratefully. “It’s nothing. That’s what friends are for,” Sam replied with a smile. Never will I forget that day in my life. Sam’s heroic and selfless behaviour transformed an ordinary beach day into a proof of true friendship. In the face of danger, Sam chose to stay by my side, a decision that went beyond the call of friendship.

4. What happened to Olson during her dance tour?
A. She lost her father. B. She had a serious heart attack.
C. She failed to catch the plane. D. She couldn’t find her way.
5. What caused the closure of Chicago O’ Hare International Airport for some time?
A. There were too many passengers.
B. A man refused to follow the safety rules.
C. The weather conditions were terrible.
D. Something was wrong with the airport equipment.
6. How did the woman who approached Olson at the airport help her?
A. She drove her home directly.
B. She gave her money to cover the cost of a new ticket.
C She offered emotional support but did not provide practical help.
D. She helped her get on the first available flight back to California.
7. What message does the text deliver?

Experts believe companies that own the office space should be more active in changing workplaces for the new way of life
The US General Services Administration (GSA) is the government agency that has been a leading force in establishing what the office of the future will look like.
A What Office of the Future Will Be Like B. Why Future Offices Attract Young People
C. Who Will Work from Home in the Future D. How Will People Work in the Future Office
