During lunchtime in Shenzhen, workers often line up to buy food from street vendors (小贩). But in the past, they weren’t allowed to set up their stalls (摊位) anywhere on the streets in China. The stalls were believed to be bad for the image of a city. “We have to keep the streets clean and tidy,” the city government of Beijing once said.
Things, though, began to change in recent months. In March, Shanghai and Hangzhou worked out detailed plans for stall businesses. And now Shenzhen is also preparing to welcome back street vendors. On April 28, it announced new guidelines on the management of street vending. Under the rules, street vendors will be allowed to operate in certain areas within the city. The new rules worked out on September 1,2023.
Most people are glad to see vendors getting back on the streets. “I think it’s good and convenient,” said one user on Weibo. “Vendors can make money, while customers will have more choice.”
Street vending has long been considered as a lowly job in China. But in 2020 former Premier Li Keqiang pointed out that street vendors were the “lifeblood” of the country. Since then, many Chinese young people have seen the business as a way to get away from the stress of traditional work culture. Some of them can now be seen setting up stalls on weekends in Shanghai.

A. The workers. B. The vendors. C. The customers.
21. How do most people like street vendors now?
A. Pleased. B. Calm. C. Afraid.

What happens if you swallow gum (吞口香糖) by accident? You might have heard that gum stays in your stomach for up to seven years. But is that true? Beth Czerwony, a doctor at Cleveland Clinic, will explain what really happens when a piece of gum makes its way into your stomach.
Is it bad to swallow gum?
Swallowing one piece of gum every now and then isn’t likely to do any harm. But you shouldn’t make a habit of swallowing gum, as that can do some damage.
Gum base is largely synthetic (人工合成的). It’s nondigestible which means your body can’t break it down like it does other foods.” So it just stays in your stomach all the way through,” Czerwony explains.
Does gum stay in your stomach for seven years?
Don’t worry: Gum doesn’t stay in your stomach for seven years or even seven days.
“ If you’ ve swallowed a piece of gum, it’ll come out about 40 hours later in your stool(粪便), ”Czerwony says. “Because it can’t be digested, it comes right out whole.”
When should you go to your doctor?
Swallowing one piece of gum probably won’t hurt you, but beyond that, be careful. Dr. Czerwony warns that too much at a time can cause an intestinal blockage (肠道阻塞). “ Anything you eat after that isn’t going to be able to get through, which leads to pain and pressure.” she says.
24. What does the underlined word “nondigestible” mean?
A. 无害的 B. 不消化的 C. 不动的
25. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Gum can stay for 7 years in the stomach.
B. People can pass gum from the body at once.
C. Pieces of gum at a time can cause problems.
26. How does the writer develop the passage?
A. By giving examples. B. By asking questions. C. By listing numbers.
27. What’s the writing purpose of the text?
A. To get people know some facts about swallowing gum.
B. To introduce how gum does some damage to people.
C. To tell why swallowing gum causes an intestinal blockage.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. B 27. A
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了吞下口香糖后会发生什么,包括口香糖是否会在胃里停留7年、吞下口香糖是否有害以及何时应该去看医生等事实。
【24题详解】
词义猜测题。根据“It’s nondigestible which means your body can’t break it down like it does other foods.”可知,这句话说明口香糖不能被身体像消化其他食物那样分解,因此“nondigestible”的意思是不消化的。故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Dr. Czerwony warns that too much at a time can cause an intestinal blockage(肠道阻塞).”可知,一次吃太多口香糖可能会引起肠道阻塞,故选C。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。文章通过提出一系列问题,如“Is it bad to swallow gum?”、“Does gum stay in your stomach for seven years?”和“When should you go to your doctor?”来展开论述,因此作者是通过提问来发展文章的。故选B。
【27题详解】

Over the past few years, cars have become smarter and smarter. Some of them can even drive themselves. Now, our roads have followed the steps. In the United Kingdom alone, there are around650 kilometers of “smart roads” in use. Across the world, many more are being built. Some new technologies are being put to use.
▲ Roads that recharge (给……充电)
Global warming has forced us to search for new energy sources. Why not look to the roads? Piezoelectric roads, a new kind of smart road, use vibrations (震动) from passing cars to produce electricity. In fact, Piezoelectricity was invented in
1880. However, it has never been widely used before now. The U. K.’s Lancaster University is going to improve it.
▲ Built- in brain
Roads of the future may be able to know how many people are on them, send drivers updates (最新的情况) on weather and traffic jams, and recharge electric cars while driving.
This seems impossible, but one American company has almost made it come true. By sensing the weight of a car, the smart roads can track the speed of each wheel. The smart roads are like large touchpads (触摸屏) so that they can collect data (数据) by looking for wheels. And then the roads will send it to the drivers.
▲ Roads that never freeze
It can be dangerous to drive in snowy weather. A tech company in Israel has developed the Snowless roads. When they find snow or ice on their surfaces, the roads will heat themselves up, melting (使融化) them away. The company has succeeded in testing this project on a few Canadian roads and in some of its car parks.

Hello everyone, Today, I want to recommend a wonderful book to you all. The book’s name is To Kill a Mockingbird and it is written by Harper Lee. This book is about the adventures and experiences of a young girl named Scout Finch in the Southern United States during the 1930s. It touches upon vital themes such as racial injustice and moral growth.
I recommend this book because it teaches valuable life lessons about empathy, courage, and the importance of standing up for what is right. The characters are incredibly relatable, and the story is both captivating and thought-provoking.

During lunchtime in Shenzhen workers often line up to buy food from street vendors (小贩).
But in 2020, former Premier Li Keqiang pointed out that street vendors were the “lifeblood” of the country.
