2024-2025学年九年级上英语高阶阅读能力训练 A Not getting enough or the right kind of sleep is bad for health. But according to researchers from the University of California, people who don't get enough sleep are less willing to socialize(交际) with others. They are simply too tired to go out. The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had just had a good night's sleep-as well as tested them again after a sleepless night. The participants watched videos of people with neutral(中性的) expressions walking toward them. When the person on the video got too"close"to them, they pushed a button to stop the video, which recorded how close they allowed the person to get. The results showed that the participants kept the person at a distance of 60% further back if they hadn't gotten enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being invaded(侵占). But when the participants got a good night's sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them. According to lead researcher Matthew Walker, the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with others. In turn, other people may think you are weird and stay away from you. This can make you feel lonely and cause you to sleep even less. It becomes a vicious cycle(恶性循环). So if you want to be a more sociable and popular person, sleeping well might help. "One night of good sleep makes you feel more outgoing and socially confident, "said Walker. 1. Researchers from the University of California believe that less sleep . But even for book lovers, finding the opportunity to read can be a challenge. So it comes naturally that audiobooks(有声书) become a preferred choice. With the help of audiobooks, you can enjoy your favorite books while exercising, cleaning your bedroom or on the way to school. Just as British publisher Drummond Moir told the Guardian:“We' re seeing audiobooks really attract people who may not have the time or wish to pick up a print book.” By winning the battle for people's time and patience, the audiobook industry is growing, making almost $1 billion (7 billion yuan) last year in the United States. In a blog post, Agnete Steine wrote, audiobooks“are able to provide the listener with a new dimension (维度) to their reading experience”. Indeed, audiobooks give the stories you read a voice, offering you a more intimate(亲密的) and emotional tie(情感纽带) to the story. . ▲ . Listeners can create images through the story, and also from the voice they hear. With the help of the pictures and voices, we can remember people's ideas and feelings much better. Then we can have a better understanding of the theme. Among the most listened audiobooks in the UK is the Harry Potter series which are read by famous English actor and presenter Stephen Fry, whose voice makes people crazy. Although audiobooks have grown more and more popular, some people think that they sometimes are not good for readers to understand different scenes (场景). Writing for Time magazine, Steven Poole wrote“the actor in the studio has to choose just one delivery (演说方式)” when faced with a“line or poem balanced between two possible meanings” While this may be true, audiobooks are undoubtedly a useful way to escape the stresses of modern life and a good way to keep busy. A media survey of 200 people from 22 cities shows that 36% people say they've been forced to wait 10 to 30 minutes before a driver accepts their order. So why is it difficult to call a car? Luo Wen, Senior Product Director with Didi Chuxing, said the reason is that the supply of Didi drivers fails to meet the demand(需求). Luo also said the number of passengers has been increasing since January 13th when the"Chunyun"started, while the number of drivers has dropped with many of them already heading home for the Lunar New Year holiday. Another reason behind the supply shortage is the governments new rule that requires drivers be local citizens, which makes it impossible for more people to serve as a Didi driver. On top of the lack(缺乏) of supply, the main cause is the way orders are handed out to drivers. During rush hours, drivers know that their passengers will have to pay tips to get through to drivers, so drivers appear to pay no attention to passengers' orders until the value of the tip meets their demands. Didi has made it a rule that the higher tips passengers pay, the more likely they will get a taxi. So, they' re waiting out the passengers. 16.
