A
Research has shown that when we volunteer—where we give ourselves and our time to help others—we actually end up benefiting too. Our happiness grows. We feel more satisfied with life. We even have more energy and creativity. Basically, we have more to give.
I’ve noticed a pattern with my friends. Sometimes, they get into the habit of gossiping about others. They will constantly complain about their bosses or coworkers. It seems as if they get caught in this loop of complaining, and their frustration distracts them in other parts of their life. When this happens, they become uninterested in new events or become annoyed by their colleagues or things that happen at work.
At the same time, I’ve also seen other friends go out of their way to help someone on their team or to help out on a project that had very little—or even nothing—to do with their main work. Although it seems like they won’t receive anything in return, my friends benefit from these interactions. My friends have told me about the stronger relationships they’ve built at work and the fun they’ve had working on new and interesting projects. They’ve told me about how the people they helped before have returned the favor later on. Not only that, but they have even talked about times where their boss recognized them for their work or when they were informed in advance about upcoming projects.
We often think that when we help someone else, we aren’t doing anything for ourselves. But we actually often end up getting back just as much as we give. When we step in to help someone, we often turn out to be helping ourselves, as well.

Help at an animal shelter (庇护所). Most shelters depend on (依靠) volunteers to keep the cats and dogs happy and take them to exercise. And when you’re walking dogs, you get some exercise, too.
Protect the environment. Take part in a park clean-up day. Plant a tree. Join a group to work together to protect a river.
Help sick people. Helping others can make you feel good. When you cheer sick people up, you also feel happy. If you have several hobbies, find a way to do them all. Knowing about yourself means not only that you find out what you’re good at and what you like, it also means discovering what you’re not good at and what you don’t like. Both help you to see your aim(目标)in life.
Although most students would be unhappy if they found that they had failed a very difficult physics course, they have in fact learned a lot about themselves. They know that they should not become engineers or physical scientists. .If he or she draws something out of the failing. They may then decide on their aim and choose the kind of work they would be fit for and they would like to do.
It is impossible to decide whether or not you like something until you have tried it. If you decide that you would like to play the piano, you need to take more than one lesson before you can know whether you are really interested in it or you are able to do well.
It is not enough to want to be a great pianist. You also have to like the hard practice and long training before you become one. If you would enjoy being a great pianist but hate the work, forget it.
It’s a good plan to try as many ideas as possible when you are still young. And then you will be able to find out what your true interests are.

根据“bring cheap but good houses to people”(给人们带来便宜但质量好的房子)可知是给那些买不起房子的人,所以选C。
25. 答案:A

26. 答案:B
解析:“It takes/took + 时间 + to do sth.” + 金钱”;D选项“spent”的常用结构是“sb. spends + 时间/金钱 + on sth./(in) doing sth.”,都不符合此处句型要求。
27. 答案:A
解析:“That's why...”
28. 答案:B
解析:根据前文“quickly build lots of houses”(快速建造很多房子)以及“by 3D - printing with concrete”(通过用混凝土3D打印)可知这种方式是能快速建房的,“quickly”意为“快速地”,选B。
A选项“for”表示目的、原因等;C选项“or”表示选择或者“否则”;D选项“as”表示“当……
根据“to suit the needs of different families”(以适应不同家庭的需求)可知是改变设计,所以选C。

解析:文段中提到“Lisa likes to help take care of sick children and cheer them up on weekends. She is good at telling stories.”(丽莎喜欢在周末帮忙照顾生病的孩子并让他们振作起来,她擅长讲故事),C选项“We need volunteers to help take care of sick children on Saturdays and Sundays. You are welcome to tell them interesting stories to cheer them up.”(我们需要志愿者在周六和周日帮忙照顾生病的孩子,欢迎给他们讲有趣的故事让他们振作起来)与之匹配,都是围绕照顾生病孩子以及讲故事让孩子开心这一内容,所以选C。
32. 答案:G
解析:文段提到“Lulu is interested in talking about history and some old things. She is free on Sunday.”(露露对谈论历史和一些古老的事物感兴趣,她周日有空),G选项“The City Museum needs guides on Sunday. You need to tell them how the old things worked and what life was like in the past.”(城市博物馆周日需要导游,你需要给游客讲述过去的老物件是如何工作以及过去的生活是什么样的)正好符合露露对历史和老物件感兴趣且周日有空这一情况,所以选G。
33. 答案:A
解析:文段指出“As an animal lover, Linda wants to be an animal doctor. She has worked at the Animal Research Base for half a year.”(作为一名动物爱好者,琳达想成为一名动物医生,她已经在动物研究基地工作了半年),A选项“Could you help at the animal hospital? We need volunteers to help us feed young animals and play with them. It’s better for you to know how to take care of animals.”(你能来动物医院帮忙吗?
34. 答案:E
解析:文段说“Grace likes talking with old people. She can help those who feel lonely, but she is only free on Saturday.”(格蕾丝喜欢和老人聊天,她能帮助那些感到孤独的老人,但她只有周六有空),E选项“Can you help the old and lonely people in the Old People’s Home? You can talk with them or give performances to them. Come and cheer them up. Any day is OK.”(你能帮助养老院里孤独的老人吗?
He is interested in introducing some places of interest to people.”(鲍勃喜欢旅行,他对向人们介绍一些名胜古迹感兴趣),D选项“Can you introduce some interesting places in this city to travelers? We need volunteers to help the travelers in Blue Sky Travel Center.”(你能向游客介绍这座城市里有趣的地方吗?
A
Research has shown that when we volunteer—where we give ourselves and our time to help others—we actually end up benefiting too.
36. The author’s friends have built strong relationships through________.
A.gossiping B.working C.helping others D.complaining
37. What we get back is _________what we give when we help others.
A.more than B.less than C.as much as D.no more than
38. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Helping others is not interesting.
B.Helping others is helping yourself.
C.Helping others has little benefits.
D.Don’t help others.
36. 答案:C
解析:文中提到“Although it seems like they won’t receive anything in return, my friends benefit from these interactions. My friends have told me about the stronger relationships they’ve built at work and the fun they’ve had working on new and interesting projects.”(尽管看起来他们不会得到任何回报,但我的朋友们从这些互动中受益。
37. 答案:C
解析:文章最后一段明确指出“We often think that when we help someone else, we aren’t doing anything for ourselves. But we actually often end up getting back just as much as we give.”(我们常常认为当我们帮助别人时,我们并没有为自己做任何事。 A选项“more than”(多于)、B选项“less than”(少于)、D选项“no more than”(仅仅;只是)都不符合原文表达的意思。
B
Do you want to be a volunteer? Maybe you need some ideas. Here is some advice.
Help kids learn and grow. Be a big brother or sister at an after-school care center. You can help little kids to learn or play with them.
Give back during the holidays. Serve dinner for the homeless, volunteer at an old people’s home, or give out toys to kids.
For example, if you love kids and are good at painting and dancing, visit a children’s hospital and teach them these interesting things.
39. What can a volunteer do at an animal shelter?
A.Feed animals. B.Help animals do exercise.
C.Clean the shelter. D.Make workers there happy.
40. Which is NOT mentioned (提到) as a way to protect the environment?
A.Planting trees. B.Protecting rivers.
C.Setting up a green club. D.Cleaning up the park.
41. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Who can be a volunteer? B.The reasons of being a volunteer.
C.The time of being a volunteer. D.Ways of being a volunteer.
42. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Volunteers can feel good when they help sick people.
B.Volunteering at a children’s hospital is meaningless.
C.An after-school care center is a place for homeless kids.
D.The old people’s home needs more volunteers than the children’s hospital.
39. 答案:B
解析:文中提到“Help at an animal shelter (庇护所). Most shelters depend on (依靠) volunteers to keep the cats and dogs happy and take them to exercise.”(在动物庇护所帮忙。
40. 答案:C
解析:文中在“Protect the environment”部分提到“Take part in a park clean-up day. Plant a tree. Join a group to work together to protect a river.”(参加公园清洁日活动、种树、加入一个团队共同保护河流),而“Setting up a green club”(建立一个绿色俱乐部)并没有在提到的保护环境的方式中出现,所以选C。
41. 答案:D
解析:文章开头提出“Do you want to be a volunteer? Maybe you need some ideas. Here is some advice.”(你想成为一名志愿者吗? A选项“Who can be a volunteer?”(谁能成为志愿者)文章未着重讲述;B选项“The reasons of being a volunteer.”(成为志愿者的原因)文中虽有体现帮助他人能让自己感觉好等益处,但重点不是说原因;C选项“The time of being a volunteer.”(成为志愿者的时间)也不是文章主要阐述内容,所以都不选。
42. 答案:A
Helping others can make you feel good. When you cheer sick people up, you also feel happy.”(帮助病人,帮助别人能让你感觉良好,当你让病人振作起来时,你也会感到开心),说明志愿者帮助病人时能感觉良好,A选项符合文意。B选项“Volunteering at a children’s hospital is meaningless.”(在儿童医院做志愿者是没有意义的)与原文中提到去儿童医院教孩子们有趣的东西等有意义的志愿服务内容相悖;C选项“An after-school care center is a place for homeless kids.”(课后托管中心是无家可归孩子待的地方)文中只是说可以在课后托管中心帮助小孩子学习、玩耍,没说那是无家可归孩子待的地方;D选项“The old people’s home needs more volunteers than the children’s hospital.”(养老院比儿童医院更需要志愿者)文章并没有对两者所需志愿者数量进行比较,所以B、C、D选项都不符合文意,不选。
C
Terry Fox was only seventeen when he got cancer (癌症) . He must have felt hopeless when the doctor said his right leg would have to be cut off 6 inches (英寸) above the knee.
But to everyone’s surprise, Terry Fox made up his mind to become a long-distance (长距离的) runner and do something about the cancer. What a dream!
Although it seemed impossible, Terry decided to run across the whole country. He hoped to raise one million dollars for cancer research. Few people believed he would make it. Anyway, on April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope. For the first few days of his marathon, Terry Fox was alone. He started running at 4: 30 am. Day by day, people began to realize that something big was happening on the lonely road. As people saw Terry, they stopped and donated (捐赠) money for cancer research.
However, his health took a rapid turn for the worse several months later. He had to give up his marathon on September 1, 1980. Terry died three months later, at the age of 22. In his short life, he raised $24 million for cancer research—one dollar for each person in his motherland.
Since his death, the yearly Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to be the world’s largest one—day fundraiser (募捐活动) for cancer research.
43. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.The dream was very strange.
B.It was such a silly dream.
C.The dream was easy to achieve.
D.It was almost an impossible dream.
44. How much money did Terry raise for cancer research in his short life?
A.$2.4 million. B.$24 billion. C.$24 million. D.$2.4 billion.
45. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To tell us when Terry Fox Run was first held.
B.To tell us not to give up when facing difficulties.
C.To advise us to donate money for cancer research.
D.To call on us to take part in Marathon of Hope.
44. 答案:C
解析:文中明确指出“In his short life, he raised $24 million for cancer research—one dollar for each person in his motherland.”(在他短暂的生命里,他为癌症研究筹集了2400万美元——相当于他祖国每人一美元),所以选C。
D
46. If you say you really know yourself,________.
A.you know what you are good at
B.you have got the whole picture of yourself
C.you keep in mind your aim in life
D.you have less you don’t like than what you like
47. Failing can turn into something good________.
A.if you have aim in life and get the job you wish to have
B.if you lead a happier life
C.if your decision is right
D.if you learn something from it
48. The example of “playing the piano” in Paragraph 3 and 4 implies(意味)that________.
A.if you don’t like music, don’t practice the piano
B.it takes more than one lesson to learn to play the piano
C.you can decide only after you have tried
D.you can become a great pianist only after hard and long training
49. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.You have enough time before you come to a wise decision.
B.The more experiences you have, the better decision you will make.
C.Test ideas,compare and then decide.
D.People always make hasty(匆匆的)decisions.
46. 答案:B
解析:文章开头指出“Knowing about yourself means not only that you find out what you’re good at and what you like, it also means discovering what you’re not good at and what you don’t like.”(了解自己不仅意味着弄清楚自己擅长什么、喜欢什么,还意味着发现自己不擅长什么、不喜欢什么),也就是全面地了解自己,所以说如果真的了解自己,就是对自己有一个全面的认识,选B。
47. 答案:D
解析:文中提到“If he or she draws something out of the failing. They may then decide on their aim and choose the kind of work they would be fit for and they would like to do.”(如果他或她能从失败中有所收获,那么他们就可以确定自己的目标,选择适合自己且愿意做的工作),说明失败能变成好事的前提是能从失败中学到东西,所以选D。
49. 答案:D
解析:文章最后提到“It’s a good plan to try as many ideas as possible when you are still young. And then you will be able to find out what your true interests are.”(在你还年轻的时候,尝试尽可能多的想法是个好计划,然后你就能发现自己真正的兴趣所在),这体现了要多经历、多尝试、多比较后再做决定,要有足够时间来做明智的决定,A、B、C选项都符合文章传达的这种理念。
E
Children always did not do what their parents wanted them to do. They did the things in their own ways. But they always made their parents very happy. Old Mr. Brown had a little son named Tom. He was ten years old. He was very glad when his father wanted him to buy something for him. One day at five o’clock in the afternoon, Mr. Brown gave him two dollars and let him buy some stamps(邮票) in the post office. Tom was very excited, because for a long time he did not have so much money. Mr. Brown told him clearly where the post office was. He expected that he would come back in twenty minutes. But nearly two hours passed, Tom did not come back. Mr. Brown was surprised. “He lost his way?” he thought to himself.
At seven in the evening, Tom came back with a box. He was very tired. When he saw his father, he said happily, “Daddy, I used all of your money to buy a box of chocolate. It was very sweet(甜的), but didn’t you think a box of chocolate was quite heavy for a little boy?”
50. Why was Tom glad when his father gave him two dollars?
A.Because his father wanted him to buy some stamps.
B.Because his father wanted him to buy a box of chocolate with the money.
C.Because he didn’t have so much money for a long time.
D.Because the money would not his.
51. It took Tom ______ to buy the “stamps”.
A.two hours B.three hours C.six hours D.over seven hours
52. Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The post office was very far from Mr. Brown’s house.
B.Tom spent all the money.
C.Tom often went to the post office to buy stamps.
D.Tom’s father was very angry when Tom got home.
50. 答案:C
解析:文中提到“Tom was very excited, because for a long time he did not have so much money.”,说明汤姆高兴的原因是他已经很久没有这么多钱了,所以当爸爸给他两美元时他很兴奋,选C。
51. 答案:A
解析:文中提到“One day at five o’clock in the afternoon, Mr. Brown gave him two dollars and let him buy some stamps(邮票) in the post office.”以及“At seven in the evening, Tom came back with a box.”,下午五点爸爸让他去买邮票,晚上七点他才回来,所以一共花费了两个小时,选A。
52. 答案:B
解析:根据文中汤姆说的话“Daddy, I used all of your money to buy a box of chocolate.”
F
A poor boy sat on the road with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said, “I am blind. Please help.” But there were few coins in the hat.
A man walked by. He took the sign, turned it back, and wrote some words. Then he gave the sign back to the boy. Soon the hat began to fill up. More people gave money to the blind boy. The hat was almost filled with money in the morning. That afternoon the man came again. The boy said, “Thanks a lot, sir. But what did you write?”
The man replied, “I said what you said, but in a different way. I wrote, ‘Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.’”

Volunteer activities play a significant part in our lives. They bring warmth and hope to those in need and also enable volunteers to gain growth and happiness.
In my opinion, volunteer activities have many meanings. Firstly, they can help others solve difficulties and improve their living conditions. Secondly, they enhance our sense of social responsibility and contribute to the harmonious development of the community. Moreover, through these activities, we can improve our abilities, such as communication and teamwork skills.
Last weekend, I had a wonderful volunteer experience. I went to the local orphanage with my classmates. We took some books, toys and daily necessities to the children there. We played games, told stories and helped them with their homework. The smiles on the children's faces made me feel extremely happy and satisfied. I realized that my small actions could have a great impact on others. Therefore, I decided to participate in more volunteer activities in the future.
In conclusion, volunteer activities are really meaningful and I will keep on doing them to make a difference.
