It is announced that you, Alaska Airlines, will cease service to Unalaska through the end of 2024. This is a terrible way to treat your loyal customers in Unalaska.
Alaska Airlines: How can you justify walking away from your federally certified listed route to this area for another three months? Local residents, businesses, and the seafood industry have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on your tickets over the past several years. For the past months, Unalaskans have been left with no scheduled air service, leaving us locals having to organize expensive flights or having to cancel medical trips and vacations.
With air service now transferred from the Saab 2000 (一种客机机型) to Ravn 8, Unalaskans will be burdened with a higher ticket price — estimated at $1,250—$1,300 for a round-trip ticket just to Anchorage.
The Saab 2000 takes two hours to Anchorage while the Ravn 8 has limited capacity, requires mid-route refueling, and baggage will be limited to one bag. And because the Unalaska airport operates only in daylight, we can expect flights to be turned back due to late afternoon departures from Anchorage.
In conclusion, many of us will be writing a letter to the editor for the Anchorage paper, the regional papers, and to Alaska Air web page feedback section. We are urging our locally elected officials to get in touch with the Alaska delegation in Washington, DC: Sen. Murkowski, Rep. Young and Sen. Sullivan to ask that they get involved with this issue, as well as Governor Dunleavy.
Throughout the years you Alaska Airlines have been very supportive to the residents, local non-profits and communities across Alaska with travel issues and we greatly appreciate that. I can only hope that you will do the right thing and reevaluate your decision on this issue.
24. What's the possible result of Alaska Airlines' ceasing service?
A. Life inconvenience.
B. Establishment of a new Airline.
C. Trust loss in Alaska Airlines.
D. Shutdown of the local food industry.
25. What might be an advantage of the Saab 2000?
A. A lower ticket price.
B. Unlimited capacity.
C. Mid-route refueling.
D. Comfortable seats.
26. What will the people of Unalaska do next?
A. Urging a new local official election.
B. Contacting Alaska delegation directly.
C. Reevaluating their decision on this issue.
D. Expressing their request via mass media.
27. Who might be the writer?
A. A visitor to Unalaska.
B. A journalist of Washington Post.
C. A Unalaska resident.
D. An employee of Alaska Airlines

Scientists have shown how plants can protect themselves against genetic (基因的) damage caused by environmental stresses. The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism (机制) that spells cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA.
Plants have small populations of stem cells (干细胞) at the tips of their roots and shoots, which enable them to continuously grow and produce new tissues throughout their lifetime. These stem cells serve as ancestors for plant tissues and organs. However, any genetic faults present in the stem cells will continue to exist and be passed on permanently throughout the plant’s life, which could last thousands of years.
Given the critical role of stem cells and their exposure to potentially dangerous environments at the growing tips of roots and shoots, safeguards are necessary to prevent stem cell faults from becoming fixed. Researchers Nick Fulcher and Robert Sablowski, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, aimed to uncover these protective mechanisms. Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells.
When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die, preventing the propagation of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues. This process has similarities to the safeguard mechanism found in animal cells, which has been broadly studied due to its relevance in preventing cancer.
The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development. It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change.
28.What is the function of the in-built mechanism in plants?
A.To produce more roots and shoots.
B.To increase the overall lifetime of the plant.
C.To enhance plant growth and nutrient intake.
D.To stop genetic faults in stem cells passing on.
29.What can we know about stem cells in plants according to the text?
A.They are relatively abundant in quantity.
B.They are resistant to environmental stresses.
C.They make quick response to DNA damage.
D.They have the ability to repair damaged DNA.
30.What does the underlined word “propagation” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Spread. B.Change. C.Existence. D.Self-repair.
31.What does the last paragraph focus on?
A.The way of dealing with climate change on the earth.
B.The significance of identifying the protective system in plants.
C.The method of ensuring plant survival under environmental stress.
D.The urgency of developing plants that can handle environmental stress.
D
In 1990, Gibson and Bruce Sterling’s The Difference Engine imagined an alternative history where computers were built a century earlier with gears (齿轮), helping popularize steampunk, a style of blending old and new technologies. How breathtaking when technology could be constructed from the past’s parts!
But what if the world truly worked this way? Is digital perfection too much trustworthy? It might be better to see it not as a glimpse into the future, but as a legacy from the past, with all the problems handed down. In January 2023, the grounding of U.S. planes caused delays and losses when the outdated NOTAM system from 1920 failed.
In a steampunk-inspired Doctor Who episode, heroes discover the engine of a spaceship is futuristic by appearance but a tortured, whale-like creature, driven like a horse under the whip. Those who grow curious face social pressure, punishment, and distractions to be kept ignorant. Steampunk tales revisit Victorian power structures of the authorities, where bosses promise a bright future while hiding the suffering that fuels it. These elements provoke reflection on today’s world: Who truly labors behind the scenes? Are they living the bright future promised to others?
Steampunk machines, both extraordinary and romantic, often stir up sadness as their parts wear out, demanding constant attention to function. In Pushing Ice, researchers land on an alien spaceship, only to be trapped as it accelerates into deep space. With no choice, they construct a chain of gears to control its energy, inspecting every gear daily; even a single malfunction could lead to death. Ultimately, it is humans—weak, imperfect, tending to aging machines—that sustain us.
This steampunk-like view of technology, blending old and new, is particularly relevant today, when modern technologies often distract us from their inner workings. Just as we receive instant Amazon orders, we may soon depend on AI, focusing on results without questioning the process. The risks of this relationship to technology are self-evident. Yet it’s not so hard to adjust, imagining a forest of gears turning, wondering if they fit. It’s all less perfect than it seems.
32.What does the NOTAM system illustrate?
A.A proof of trustworthy digital perfection.
B.A perfect mix of old and new technologies.
C.A necessity of a breathtaking glimpse into future.
D.A display of a future-like yet problematic heritage.
33.What is typical of steampunk stories?
A.They draw on Victorian society.
B.They are starred by the cruel bosses.
C.They are fueled by a promising future.
D.They think highly of behind-the-scene labors.
34.How is the passage mainly developed?
A.By presenting facts.
B.By analyzing reasons.
C.By listing examples.
D.By following time order.
35.What is the best title of the passage?
A.The Perfect Machine: A Victory Fantasy
B.Imperfect Progress: A Steampunk Insight
C.Unfailing or not? Machines of Tomorrow
D.Perfect or not? The Steampunk Revolution
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Wildlife documentaries are known for offering breathtaking images of animals in their natural habitats. You might be thinking that these shows offer a totally real portrayal (插绘) of these animals — an objective window into their lives as they hunt, rest and raise their young. 36 While the images we see are filmed on location, many of the sounds are recorded in a sound studio and added to the programs later by human “Foley artists (拟音师)”.
37 Usually, documentary filmmakers can film their subjects from a great distance, but they typically can’t get close enough to capture clear sounds without disturbing the animals. 38 There will probably be background noises such as crew members chatting or walking around if sounds are recorded on location. In other cases, the animals might make sounds of a frequency or volume that most microphones simply can’t capture clearly.
“Foley artists” will use a variety of tools to simulate (模拟) the sounds made by animals. And most of them will create the close — up sounds of animals chewing or yawning with their own mouths. These sounds are created as the artist watches the videos, making sure they perfectly match the actions they’re paired with. 39 Animal cries — which are far too complex to be simulated — will have to be taken from library recordings.
Watching “Foley artists” at work on wildlife projects gives me a thrill like the one we get when we see how a magic trick is done. 40 Sounds have the ability to affect how we understand a given species. The way certain animals are portrayed in popular media may affect support for conservation efforts.
A.But this isn’t quite the case.
B.There are some exceptions, though.
C.The Foley process involves a large team.
D.“Foley artists” are creative and resourceful.
E.Wildlife documentaries also tend to require large crews.
F.Admittedly, the significance of the technique goes further.
G.This is an unavoidable outcome of modern wildlife filmmaking

“Bang. . !” Sara pushed the door open. She threw her school bag onto the floor and called out, “I’m home!” No answer. The house was silent. It sounded empty, but she knew it wasn’t. Her mum and dad were working upstairs.
Sara got a glass of orange juice, went into the conservatory (玻璃房) and sat down in her favourite chair. The garden was still in the dark afternoon. On one side, her mum’s garden was neat and tidy with boring short grass, boring straight flowerbeds and boring straight paths. But on the other side, Sara’s Nature Garden looked wild and exciting with big dead sunflowers and tall grasses.
“Nobody is interested in me. Mum and dad only think about their work,” she thought sadly.
Then she recalled: One month earlier, she learned in a magazine that many dogs were abandoned because their owners got bored with them; One hour earlier, she saw a cute dog wagging its tail and licking her friend’s face.
Sara knew today was special. Today things were changing. She couldn’t wait any longer. It’s time to talk to her parents.
So Sara got up from her chair and climbed all the way to the loft (阁楼). “Mum, I want a talk.” said Sara. “Just a minute!” Her mum clicked on the keyboard, took off her glasses and turned to her daughter. Sara coughed, took a deep breath, and told her mum that she wanted a dog. “No, Sara. That’s impossible,” her mum said firmly. Sara went to her father but got the same answer. She rushed into her room angrily and slammed the door shut.
Later, Sara’s mum knocked at the door and went in. “Darling, we know this is important to you. You can have a dog if you take the responsibility. But look at your Nature Garden, your school bag, your bedroom! What a mess! Do you think you can take good care of a dog?” said her mum.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Sara was lost in thought and decided to make some changes.

B.More children think friendship is important.
C.More children say they have no best friend.
17.What is the main idea Dr. Green tries to express in the talk?
A.To be slow means to focus on quality.
B.Friendship should be developed slowly.
C.The British support the Slow Movement.
【答案】14.C 15.B 16.C 17.A
【原文】W: Dr. Green, congratulations on the success of your new book! We learned that it has been translated into 30 languages—English, of course, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, and so on.
M: Thanks, Helen.
W: Well, could you tell us what this popular book is about?
M: It's called In Praise of Slow. It's about the rise of the Slow Movement.
W: What is the Slow Movement?
M: It is a revolution against the idea that faster is always better. When I say “slow”, I don't mean doing everything slowly. It's about doing everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible. It's about quality in everything we do.
W: When and where was this “slow” idea born?
M: It was born in the early 1990s in Italy. It began as the Slow Food Movement, which centered on food. More recently, “slow” has become popular worldwide.
W: Have we reached the point of trying to speed up something that cannot really be sped up?
M: Of course. The Internet connects us in wonderful ways, but it also leads us into trying to hurry up relationships. So you find people online saying they have more than 4, 000 friends. The very idea of friendship is not considered important. And we may be losing the ability to make friends. In Britain, a study found that in the past ten years, the number of children who say they have no best friend rose from under one in eight to nearly one in five!

W: Good morning, this is Samantha from The Weather Service, your free Internet weather station with news around the world and around the clock. Your preferred city is Guangzhou. In Guangzhou this week, we expect more heavy rains, since we are only at the beginning of June. May was rather dry, but the storms should pick up again before the weekend. Hong Kong is expected to get hit hardest with this next cycle of rain, but everywhere south of Shanghai along the coast should see some amount of rainfall. Guangzhou will get around four centimeters over the next five days. Another band of rain can be seen on the radar, but it’s too far south over the sea right now. So it’s hard to say when it will hit Guangzhou. This weather pattern should continue through June and into July, when the heavy rains will finally move to the north of China. This is the latest update for your Guangzhou weather. Remember, you can check back at The Weather Service anytime — day or night — to get updates on your local weather or the weather in your favorite city.

答案 24 A 25 A 26 D 27 C
【导语】本文是一篇投诉信,内容是关于航空公司撤销航线给当地居民带来不便。
24. A 细节理解题。从第二段最后一句 leaving us locals having to organize expensive flights or having to cancel medical trips and vacations 可以看出人们生活的不便。C 原文未提及。
25. A 推理题。从第三段第一句... transferred from the Saab 2000 to Ravn 8, Unalaskans will be burdened with a higher ticket price 可推知 Saab 2000 的价格要相对低一些。 D原文未提及,BC 是 Ravn 8 的特点。
26. D 细节理解题。从倒数第二段可以找到答案!
27. C 推理题。从第一段的“you, Alaska Airlines”和第二段最后一句...leaving us locals having to organize... 以及倒数第二段“We’re urging our locally elected officials”可以推出答案。

【答案】28.D 29.C 30.A 31.B
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了科学家们已经展示了植物如何保护自己免受环境压力造成的遗传损害,即植物拥有内建机制,来阻止干细胞中的基因缺陷遗传下去。
28.细节理解题。根据第一段“The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism (机制) that spells cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA.(植物的根和芽的生长尖端有一个内置的机制,如果检测到DNA损伤,就会导致细胞死亡,从而避免将有缺陷的DNA传递给下一代)”可知,植物内建机制的功能是阻止干细胞中的基因缺陷遗传下去。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells.(通过涉及x射线和化学物质的实验,他们发现干细胞比其他细胞对DNA损伤更敏感)”可知,植物中的干细胞对DNA损伤做出快速反应。故选C。
30.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die, preventing the”以及后文“of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues”可知,当DNA受损时,细胞有能力检测到它,并导致程序化细胞死亡,防止受损的遗传密码传播到植物组织的其他部分。故划线词意思是“传播”。故选A。
31.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development. It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change.(在植物中发现类似的保护系统在植物发育领域具有重要意义。它还帮助科学家培育出能够更好地应对环境压力的植物。因此,了解植物如何应对这些压力对农业科学应对气候变化具有重要意义)”可知,最后一段的重点是识别植物保护系统的意义。故选B。
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.C 35.B
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了蒸汽朋克,一种融合新旧技术的风格,它既有重要性也有不完美性。
32.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“It might be better to see it not as a glimpse into the future, but as a legacy from the past, with all the problems handed down.(最好不要把它看作是对未来的一瞥,而是把它看作是过去遗留下来的问题。)”可知,NOTAM系统展示了一个类似未来但存在问题的遗产。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Steampunk tales revisit Victorian power structures of the authorities, where bosses promise a bright future while hiding the suffering that fuels it.(蒸汽朋克的故事重温了维多利亚时代的权力结构,在那里,老板们承诺一个光明的未来,同时隐藏着推动未来的痛苦。)”可知,典型的蒸汽朋克故事是他们借鉴了维多利亚时代的社会。故选A项。
34.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“In January 2023, the grounding of U.S. planes caused delays and losses when the outdated NOTAM system from 1920 failed.(2023年1月,由于1920年过时的NOTAM系统出现故障,美国飞机停飞,造成延误和损失。)”和第三段“In a steampunk-inspired Doctor Who episode, heroes discover the engine of a spaceship is futuristic by appearance but a tortured, whale-like creature, driven like a horse under the whip.(在这部蒸汽朋克风格的《神秘博士》中,英雄们发现一艘宇宙飞船的引擎从外观上看是未来派的,但实际上是一个像鲸鱼一样的生物,像鞭子下的马一样被驱赶着。)”和第四段“In Pushing Ice, researchers land on an alien spaceship, only to be trapped as it accelerates into deep space.(在《推冰》中,研究人员登上了一艘外星飞船,却在飞船加速进入深空时被困住了。)”可知,这篇文章主要通过列举例子来展开的。故选C项。
35.主旨大意题。分析全文内容再根据文章最后一段“This steampunk-like view of technology, blending old and new, is particularly relevant today, when modern technologies often distract us from their inner workings.(这种蒸汽朋克式的科技观融合了旧与新,在现代科技经常分散我们对其内部工作原理的注意力的今天尤为重要。)”和“Yet it’s not so hard to adjust, imagining a forest of gears turning, wondering if they fit. It’s all less perfect than it seems.(然而,调整起来并不难,想象一个齿轮森林在转动,想知道它们是否合适。一切都没有看起来那么完美。)”可知,文章主要介绍了蒸汽朋克,一种融合新旧技,它既有重要性也有不完美性,所以C选项“不完美的进步:蒸汽朋克的见解”适合用作文章标题。故选B项。
