In the past, asking locals for directions was the most reliable (可信的) method to find your way. They knew not only the way, but also interesting places to visit, and the best burger served nearby.
Today, technology offers new ways to navigate (导航), such as online driving-directions and smartphones with navigation apps. Asking others for directions has become unnecessary, for the directions are always in your pocket, as long as you have enough battery life and a data (数据) connection.
In the past few years, I didn’t have a chance to travel or ask for directions because I was busy working. But yesterday, when driving to another city, I took wrong turns and lost my way. With my phone battery dead and no navigation device (设备) in my car, I had to stop and ask for help.
I saw an old man coming out of a house and asked if he knew the way to the city. He warned me of the exit that could be easily missed and suggested some places to have lunch. We talked about the rain, guessing whether it would soon stop, then said goodbye, and I went on my way.
Finally, I arrived at my hotel. Even though it rained all the time and I spent a good part of the drive in traffic, I felt wonderful. It is nice to know that a stranger really would like to spend some time helping me. The directions I will get may not always be right, but they will always come from the heart.
29. Which picture shows the most reliable method to find the way in the past?
A. B. C. D.
30. How did the author possibly feel while talking with the old man?
A. Excited. B. Surprised. C. Thankful. D. Peaceful.
31. Why did the author feel wonderful after arriving at the hotel?
A. The locals knew the way and places to visit.
B. There was a chance to another city for work.
C. A stranger spent time helping him warmly.
D. Some places to have dinner weren’t missed.
32. What will the author likely do according to the end of the text?
A. Believe in the smartphones for navigation only.
B. Travel without planning anything beforehand.
C. Prepare enough batteries and money in pockets.
D. Ask local people directions as often as possible.

Humans like to give names to things, such as children, pets, and even cars. A new study found that elephants might also give names to each other, which is something only humans and elephants do.
Elephants talk to each other using many sounds, like their famous loud trumpeting (吼叫) and some very low sounds that people can’t hear. Researchers listened to lots of elephant sounds from two places in Kenya. They used a smart computer program to learn more about the noises. This helped them find 469 different elephant “words”.
Michael Pardo, who led the study, said, “The research shows that elephants use different calls for each. They also respond (作出反应) when a call is meant for them, and ignore (忽略) calls that are meant for others.”
Elephants don’t always use names when they talk, but they do it more when they are far from each other or when older elephants talk to younger ones. Older elephants use names more than the young ones, which means using names might be something they learn as they grow up.
The researchers also played elephant “words” to some elephants. When the elephants heard recordings of their family members calling their names, they got very excited. This shows that elephants know their own names.
Other animals, like parrots and dolphins, copy sounds to talk to each other. But this study is the first time we see an animal using made-up names for each other, showing how smart elephants are at communicating.
33. The behavior of elephants’ is made clear by ________.
A. asking a simple question B. telling a story about animals
C. giving some large numbers D. comparing it with humans’
34. How did researchers manage to find 469 different elephant “words”?
A. They searched two places in Kenya.
B. They listened to the elephant sounds.
C. They got help from Michael Pardo.
D. They used a smart computer program.
35 What does the underlined word “they” refer to?
A. Older elephants. B. Researchers. C. Younger elephants. D. Other animals.
36. Which seems to tell us that elephants are smart at communicating?
A. Elephants had made-up names.
B. Elephants got very excited.
C. Elephants use different calls for each.
D. Elephants copy sounds for each other.

In Japan’s big cities, there are small restaurants that serve coffee, called cafés. First there were pet cafés, and then cat cafés. The latest trend is a café that has pigs.
“It was wonderful, very relaxing and enjoyable,” said Brad Loomis, an engineer from the US. He was talking about his recent visit to Tokyo’s Mipig Café with his daughter.
The animals are known as “micro pigs”. They are not bigger than a small dog, even when they are fully grown. These small pigs move around the room, looking for a comfortable place. They are surprisingly quiet, making little snorts (哼哼声) now and then. And they are very clean and do not smell bad. These little things don’t like to be alone. So, this makes them good company for people.
“Each pig is special. Each one has his or her own personality. You may notice one may be strong-headed and another may be gentle,” said Shiho Kitagawa, a manager at Mipig Café.
Experts say interacting (沟通) with animals can increase people’s happiness.

In the past, asking locals for directions was the most reliable (可信的) method to find your way. They knew not only the way, but also interesting places to visit, and the best burger served nearby.
Today technology offers new ways to navigate (导航), such as online driving-directions and smartphones with navigation apps.
