Alexis, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad's car, looking out of the window. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. “Dad, there's a deer there!” Alexis said.
As the car moved closer, Alexis heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer's head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44yearold mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and edged closer. “I knew I was in trouble,” Sue says. She went to pick up a stick for selfdefense, and the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers (鹿角) and threw her into the air. Sue could feel blood flowing down her leg.
When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. Alexis looked into the woman's terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer. “I was kicking it to get its attention,” she says. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, tried to push the deer away from the women.
Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then applied a piece of cloth to Sue's injured leg. “We're going to get you to a hospital,” Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer's head and neck, but the blows didn't scare it away. “I was losing faith,” she says. “A couple more strikes, Alexis,” said her father. “You can do it.” Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer's neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away. Alexis got in the driver's seat and sped toward the nearest hospital.

根据文章第二段关键句“Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44yearold mother, had been out for her morning run.”
根据文章最后一段关键句“Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then applied a piece of cloth to Sue's injured leg.”及“Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground...She beat the deer's head and neck, but the blows didn't scare it away.”和“Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer's neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away.”
根据文章倒数第二段关键句“Alexis looked into the woman's terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer.”及最后一段关键句“Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer's neck with all her strength.” 故选A。
1.C 上文中的“I've been motivated—and demotivated—by other folks' achievements all my life.”
silently“悄悄地,静静地”;proudly“得意地,自豪地”。
advantage“有利条件,有利因素,优势”; achievement“成就,成绩”;contribution“贡献”; influence“影响”。
7.C 由下文的“I got a good bike and rode a lot”可知,作者买了一辆好的自行车,并骑了很多次,因此作者放弃跑步后把自己的目标转向了骑自行车。give up“放弃”;go on“继续”;deal with“处理”。故用 turned to。
complain“抱怨”;approve“同意”。故用dreamed。
9.B 根据空前的“I flew to San Diego to visit my sister. While she was at work one day”和空后的“went for a ride”可知,作者去圣地亚戈找姐姐,一天姐姐在上班,作者去骑行了,因此此处是说作者向姐姐借了自行车,故用borrowed。
10.A 由空后的“The roads there went through large valleys where I'd be riding uphill for miles at a time.”
danger“危险,风险”; event“活动,比赛项目”;opponent“对手,竞争者”。故用challenges。
12.A 由上文内容和下文的“by about 100‘local’ bikers who were used to such roads”可知,作者被熟悉这种路的当地骑行者超过,convince“使确信,使相信,使信服”; admire“钦佩,赞赏”。
14.B 结合文章最后一句“I've come to accept...be my own.”
