Maureen Stanko always felt her son, Nick, had so much to give. Nick is 20 and is on the autism spectrum (自闭症) and despite her knowing he had so much to give, what he would do after graduation kept his mom up at night. In Pennsylvania, where they live, students with disabilities can stay in school until they are 22 years old. Stanko says she’s heard from many parents of kids with disabilities that they worry about their kids’ futures.
Stanko brought the worry to Nick’s doctor, Tyler Kammerle, who told her he had a goal of opening a restaurant to employ people with disabilities. They teamed up with philanthropist (慈善家) Kathy Opperman to make that dream a reality.
They opened the So Much To Give Inclusive Cafe in Cedars, Pennsylvania in January 2023. They employ 63 people — 80% of employees have a disability — and they work as greeters, food runners, chefs, dishwashers and servers.
Stanko didn’t know if Nick would be able to work at the cafe. But he goes beyond her expectations and helps out at the cafe before it opens, setting up the tables before diners arrive. “I actually brought him here on Wednesday because his school was closed and he set this entire room up without me saying a word,” she said. “And the level of pride in him was just incredible.”
Stanko didn’t stop at the cafe. Her dream was to create a space to teach people with disabilities. So, across the street, she opened up the Inspiration Studio, where they teach music, life skills, crafts and other classes for people with disabilities.
Stanko says she couldn’t have done it all without her team and the donors who helped make both of the spaces possible. “I did originally think that So Much To Give was all about Nick and others with different abilities,” she said. “But what I’ve learned through this whole process is that it’s not just about Nick and other people with disabilities. Everybody has so much to give.”
4. What was Maureen Stanko’s initial concern for her son Nick?
A. His disease diagnosis. B. His future after graduation.
C. Finding a good doctor for him. D. Figuring out his personality.
5. How did Nick feel about working at the cafe?
A. Stressed. B. Challenging. C. Pleasant. D. Realistic.
6. Why did Stanko open up the Inspiration Studio for individuals with disabilities?
A. To create opportunities of work for them.
B. To enhance the educational environment.
C. To allow them to get mental health services.
D. To support them in their learning journey.
7. What did Stanko learn through the process?
A. The importance of having a backup plan.
B. The limitations of people with disabilities.
C. The necessity of more funding for such projects.
D. The universal potential in everyone to contribute.

When traveling to foreign countries mastering the art of body language is key for perfect travel experience. As a body language expert, it’s easy for me to see how we communicate with those around us without even saying a word.
I especially believe the importance of the universal language of body talk. At most times when traveling abroad, it is the only way that connects every human being, no matter the geographic location. A simple custom or sign of respect is vital to understand before taking flight to your desired destination.
For example, it is customary to simply eat the food that you have before you when we are out at a business lunch. In Asian customs, business lunches are strict. Finishing your plate or eating most of the food you ordered is considered rude in Asian culture.
“Body language teaches us everything about a person,” says Benjamin Wey, a professor at two European universities. “My professional career would be entirely different if it were not for body language and my understanding of it.” Frequently visiting both Europe and the US, Wey has come to understand that internationally, our ability to actively respect cultural customs becomes the currency within business. One key element that Wey has taken away from his travels abroad is “that all people want to be treated with respect.”
So, show your respect-and learn more about the local customs and traditions or the spots on your route. Gather an understanding of what gestures or expressions are considered useful, and avoid those that may be offensive to your new friends.
Though we started with one language in common-body language, the cultures of the world have evolved (演化). It is important to be able to identify and appreciate these differences; it will make our world smaller as a result.
8. Why does the author think body language is important?
A. It makes different cultures getting more alike.
B. It can effectively show your respect to others.
C. It allows us to connect with people anywhere.
D. It replaces the need for verbal communication.
9. What does the passage advise travelers to do to improve their travel experience?
A. Avoid making any gestures at all.
B. Finish the food you order in the plate.
C. Learn to use the local language fluently.
D. Show respect by following local customs.
10. What does the underlined word “offensive” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Rude. B. Similar. C. Awesome. D. Practical.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. Cross-cultural Body Language
B. The Traditional Cuisine Culture
C. A Perfect Travel Experience Abroad
D. A Good Way to Learn Foreign Cultures

Who doesn’t love a warm, delicious and satisfying meal? Food is what keeps human bodies full of nutrients and it provides the energy needed to go through life. But there is more to eating than just survival. People often use food to bond (建立密切联系) with others through shared meals, food gifts and at celebrations. As the Better Health Channel reports, food is used by people in all countries and cultures around the world as a way to come together and enjoy.
Gathering together with friends and family, or even with strangers, nourishes (滋养) more than our bodies. And what’s interesting is that it’s not necessarily the actual food that makes the meal so important. The social interaction of the meal setting encourages people to pay attention to each other and to connect, Life Magazine reports.
So how can people include these important “bonding through food” practices into their lives? Some suggest going out to eat with friends, family members or coworkers bi-monthly or even weekly. Going out to eat or sharing meals with others creates much deeper and more meaningful interactions when compared to other joint activities like watching a movie or TV together.
Research conducted by the University of Oxford showed that people who eat socially are more well adjusted in social and emotional settings and are more likely to feel better about themselves. And although many people eat their meals alone, 76 percent of the people questioned think sharing a meal is a good way to bring people closer.
So why is it that eating with others feels good? A study conducted by the University of Chicago concludes that it is all about trust. According the research, food helps develop trust since eating the same food together with someone else suggests that both parties are willing to bring the same thing into their body. It’s only natural that trust and cooperation are likely to develop as a result of this bonding experience.
12. What is the purpose of sharing meals beyond survival?
A. To provide energy for the body. B. To bring people together socially.
C. To serve as a form of entertainment. D. To celebrate personal achievements.
13. What can we know from the Life Magazine’s reports?
A. Social interaction during meals is significant.
B. Meals are primarily for nutritional purposes.
C. The food itself is the most important aspect.
D. Eating alone is more beneficial than sharing meals.
14. How can people put “bonding through food” into practice?
A. By sharing food gifts more often. B. By watching movies or TV together.
C. By spending more time with the family. D. By eating together with others regularly.
15. Why does sharing meals feel good?
A. It provides a sense of belonging. B. It offers an opportunity for relaxation.
C. It develops trust between individuals. D. It allows for the sharing of diverse opinions.

“Nooo!” screamed Asha as she saw a huge pimple (痘) on her nose. She didn’t have time to cover it as she was running late to school. She quickly got into her school bus just in time. As soon as she entered, kids started laughing. Nobody was willing to make her sit beside them. Even Anita, her bus mate acted a bit differently with her.
Asha was lost in thoughts. A new thought popped in her mind every second. Once she thought “Great! As if homework and exams were not enough, I have to worry about my pimple as well.” The next minute another thought popped in her mind. “I am tired of using that face wash. I still wonder how I agreed to use that horrible thing! How can...” Mr. Shetty, the bus driver said “Asha, do you want to miss the class?” Asha was so lost in her thoughts that she did not even notice that everybody had got down the bus except her.
She did not want to step into the campus. She thought, “What will my teachers think? What will my friends think?” After some time, she gathered courage and entered her class expecting that she would be laughed at.
It was a very hard day at school for her. As soon as she got home, she hugged her mother tightly. As she did so she felt all her worries were not even a dot in front of the warm and loving hug.
Later that day, she went to the supermarket with her mother. While coming back she heard people commenting the pimple on her nose. A small child shouted, “Daddy! My cherry is on her nose! Get it for me.” She heard some boys saying something in soft quiet voice, “If she would have been in our school, she would definitely be chosen as the joker in the dance.” Asha wondered why people cared so much about her appearance.

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. D

When traveling to foreign countries, mastering the art of body language is key for perfect travel experience.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述掌握肢体语言艺术是获得完美旅行体验的关键,同时旅行者要尊重当地的风俗习惯。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。由第二段中“I especially believe the importance of the universal language of body talk. At most times when traveling abroad, it is the only way that connects every human being, no matter the geographic location. (我特别相信肢体语言这一通用语言的重要性。多数时候在国外旅行时,无论地理位置如何,它是连接每个人的唯一方式)”可知,作者认为肢体语言重要,因为它让我们在任何地方都能与人交流。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。由第二段中“A simple custom or sign of respect is vital to understand before taking flight to your desired destination. (在飞往您想要的目的地之前,了解一个简单的习俗或尊重的标志至关重要)”和第五段中“So, show your respect-and learn more about the local customs and traditions or the spots on your route. (所以,表达你的尊重,更多地了解当地的习俗和传统,或者你路线上的景点)”可知,这篇文章建议旅行者遵循当地风俗来表示尊重,以改善他们的旅行体验。故选D项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。由第五段中“Gather an understanding of what gestures or expressions are considered useful, and avoid those that may be offensive to your new friends. (了解哪些手势或表情被认为是有用的,避免那些可能offensive你新朋友的手势或表情)”可知,与“useful”相对应,避免的应是负面词汇,由此推断,offensive含义与“Rude (粗鲁的、无礼的)”相近。故选A项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。文章首段提出话题,掌握肢体语言的艺术是获得完美旅行体验的关键,下文叙述,旅行者要尊重当地风俗习惯,最后一段“Though we started with one language in common-body language, the cultures of the world have evolved (演化). It is important to be able to identify and appreciate these differences; it will make our world smaller as a result. (虽然我们从共同的肢体语言中的一种语言开始,但世界文化已经发展。重要的是能够识别和理解这些差异,这将使我们的世界变得更小)”可知,“跨文化肢体语言”与文本内容一致,适合作文章标题。故选A项。

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C

Scientists need to have several spirits. Firstly, they must be curious, always eager to explore unknown fields. Secondly, they should be persistent, never giving up in the face of difficulties. Also, they need to be creative to make breakthroughs.
The spirit of curiosity drives scientists to continuously expand the boundaries of human knowledge. Persistence enables them to persevere through the toughest challenges and achieve their goals. Creativity allows them to come up with novel ideas and solutions that can change the world.

【答案】One possible version:
Finally it was time for bed story, and mom asked her to choose a book. Mom said, “What about Cindrella?” “Did Cindrella have pimples too? Was her growing up also as difficult as mine?” Asha asked innocently. Her mother smiled and began to explain to her that in fairy tale characters faced greater difficulties in life. Asha showed a little interest in the book but when she saw the book was a little worn out with old cover, she replied, “No. The book looks too old.”
Her mother asked her never to judge a book by its old cover. “You need to read it to find out its details inside,” mom said. Then mom began to read the book. Soon Asha was deeply absorbed in the magical story. When mom ended the story, she was moved to tears. Her mother explained, “We often judge people by their appearance. This is why everybody was commenting about you today. Never think about this pimple. It can never change the way you are.”
