Different Attitudes towards Hairstyles
A new research shows that women try 150 different hairstyles in their lifetime, including various cuts, colours and shapes. However, men settle(固定) on their favourite hairstyle after trying only 5 different cuts.
The study of 2,000 women has found that women visit the hairdresser five times a year on average, and about 100 like to try something different with each trip to the hairdresser. Almost half are willing to be experimental and change their hairstyle.
Women are likely to go for two new styles and at least one colour change every year between the ages of 15 and 65. The study found that 64 percent of women will change their hair simply because they are bored with their current style. Nearly 12 percent will change their hair so as to look like a celebrity(名人) while 15 percent will change their style for a wedding. 13 percent of women would change their hairstyle after having a baby. Other reasons for trying a new hairstyle were birthdays.
However, men are not as troublesome as women. They only try five different hairstyles and then stick to their favourite one in their lifetime. Men usually stick with just one style because of its being convenient (68 percent) or being liked by their partner (10 percent).
The study of 2,000 men also noticed how celebrity hairstyles(名人发型) have the influence on them and what kind of haircuts would be more fashionable in their eyes. 400 of them admit they want to grow their hair longer to copy the likes of David Beckham and actor Brad Pitt, while 240 consider dying(染色) their hair grey, to keep up with fashion trends(潮流). Actually, a hairstyle that stands for one’s personality is the first choice for men.

Wearing long robes (长袍)and tall hats, a group of foreigners went on stage and performed Peking Opera and ballads (民谣),as well as spoke Chinese.
You can see scenes like this at the 12th “Chinese bridge”—Chinese Proficiency (能力) Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students. Known as the “Olympics” of Chinese language, the competition took place in Zhengzhou, Henan on Nov 2.

Raissa, 17, from the Union of the Comoros, sang the Chinese song Wish You Safe and Well (祝你平安) during the second-round competition. “It is also my sincere wish for the people of China and the Comoros,” said Raissa. After doctors on the Chinese medical team in Africa cured her grandmother three years ago, Raissa developed a strong emotional connection with China. “My dream is to study medicine in China so that I could cure patients like the Chinese doctors who treated my grandmother,” said Raissa.
At the end of the final contest, Germole Iacopo from Italy, who has studied Chinese for four years, won as the champion (冠军). For him, the competition gave him a chance to communicate with young people all around the world. “We should learn to appreciate each other’s differences,” Germole said.

Mary Anning: the Fossil Hunter
As a fossil(化石)scientist, Mary Anning made great contributions(贡献)to her field in the 19th century. Her name is now widely known in Britain and even Europe. But that was not always the case.
Anning was a talented woman. She did not receive any proper education and taught herself geology(地质学)and paleontology(古生物学).
Anning grew up by the sea. At a young age, she showed great interest in studying the fossils along the coastline. Anning worked very hard. She went out in all weathers to search for fossils. At the age of 12, she uncovered a skeleton(骨架)that looked like a crocodile(鳄鱼). Then, after ten years of tireless effort, she made an amazing discovery. It was a huge fossil of something that the world had never seen before.
However, many of Anning’s findings disagreed with theories that had been widely accepted. What’s more, at that time, people had little respect for female scientists. Anning’s findings were even published without her name. During her lifetime, the woman was never seriously considered to be a scientist.
But such troubles didn’t stop Anning from making more discoveries. The woman was still keen on studying all sizes and types of fossils alongside the sea. Her discoveries helped to prove the existence of some extinct(已灭绝的)animals. They formed the basis for Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species(《物种起源》).
In recent years, more and more people have come to realize the importance of Anning’s work. She is now listed among the top ten British women who have greatly affected the history of science. Anning was an ambitious and hard-working woman in history. She deserves to be remembered.

“Hey, Dan, you look like the unhappiest guy in the world!” said Ella, as they volunteered as ushers (引座员) at the theater.
“Yeah,” Dan replied, trying to smile. “Remember the role you helped me practise last week? Well, I failed again.” “Oh, Dan, keep practicing! You’ll be on the other side of the curtain one day,” said Ella.
Dan kept practicing. He sang day and night. He sang everywhere he went! He wanted to be an opera singer more than anything else in the world. He volunteered at the theater on Saturdays, but he needed to start earning money to pay for singing and Italian lessons.
One day Dan saw an ad asking for bicycle delivery men. Then he began his new job delivering food to customers all over the city. Dan thought it was very rewarding making hungry people happy, but he had a problem. He wasn’t getting enough time to practice singing. Then one day, he had a great idea.
Dan arrived at 52nd Street. “I have your burgers and your fries,” he sang. “I have your soda and your le-mon-ade...” The customers were very surprised! When he finished, they clapped and gave him a nice big tip.
One night, there was an order for lobster soup to a beautiful, big house on the river. Dan rang the bell, took a deep breath and sang, “I have your lovely lobster soup. It smells delicious to me-e-e...”
The door opened slowly and a well-dressed woman appeared. She took the soup, then closed the door, with no tips at all.
A few days later, Dan received a text inviting him to the Opera House.
At the Opera House, a woman greeted Dan. It was the lady who Dan delivered lobster soup to last week. She said, “I am Antonia Allegro, the director here. I’d like to invite you to our next opera. This is your first rehearsal(排练). You’ll practice today. At my house last week, you had one of the most beautiful voices in the world! You’re so talented! Congratulations. Welcome to the show!”

Jack London was born in California, USA, in 1876. As a young man in 1897, he took part in the famous Klondike Gold Rush, when a huge number of people rushed to the Yukon in Canada to look for gold. When London returned to California in 1898, he started writing stories. His novels The Call of the Wild and White Fang are based on his experiences in the Yukon. He died in 1916.
An extract [1] from The call of the wild
Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every big dog in California. Men had found gold in the Yukon, and these men wanted big, strong dogs to work in the cold and snow of the north.
Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara valley. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs and farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was chief dog; he was born here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons and walking with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter.
But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miller’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.
Buck growled[2], and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.
When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.

As a kid, Laurie Lower loved to read. She still does. Sometimes, she thinks about what it would be like to want to read a book but not be able to. “I would be heartbroken,” she says. Laurie is a braille transcriber(盲文誊写员). She makes books that can be read by blind people.
Most kids can walk into a library or bookstore and find hundreds of books they’re able to read. But it’s not that simple for kids who are blind. They read in a different way. Laurie and other braille transcribers take the printed words of a story or textbook and change them into a code (代码) of raised dots (凸点). People who are unable to see can read these dots with their fingers.
The Braille Alphabet
When Laurie first saw the dots of the braille alphabet, she wondered if she’d ever be able to read and write them easily. She took a class for about six months. First, she learned to form letters in braille. Then she began forming words.“Practice, practice, and more practice were the keys to learning,” Laurie says. All of her practice paid off. Laurie passed the class after completing her final exam: she had to transcribe 35 pages of a book into braille.
Today, Laurie works for National Braille Press (NBP, 国家盲人出版社). One of her jobs is to transcribe children’s books into braille. To do this, Laurie first types the story into a computer. Then she uses a computer program to translate those words into the braille code. She needs to look over the translation three to five times to make sure there’s no mistake. After that, a copy of the braille story is printed by a special printer. Then the copy is given to Laurie and other proofreaders (校对员) to check again. When a book is ready, many copies of it are printed on a largeprinting machine. Then those books become available to the public. People can either buy the books through theNBP website or borrow them from the National Library Service.More than 12,000 of the borrowers are children. “I love this job!” Laurie says. “Through my brain power and my fingers, I am putting the dots into some kid’s hands.”

A lot of students from different countries are talking about how schools and parents connect now. Here is a part of their talks.
In my school, parent﹣school communication is mostly done through emails. This lets parents know what is happening at their child's school. To improve parent﹣teacher communication,Parent Breakfasts are organized at the beginning of the school year, and it enables parents to meet the head teacher and subject teachers of their child this year. Parent Evening also take place each termto let parents know their child’s progress in school. There is not a parent committe(委员会) at my school but parents can be part of the Friends group. They can help organize school events.
Peter from America
At my school, parents and teachers keep in touch in many ways. One of them is the Parent﹣Teacher Association (PTA).The PTA is a voluntary organization that brings parents and teachers together to discuss and deal with problems with school education. The PTA usually meets once or twice a term and lets parents know their children's teachers better.Another way of communication is through parent﹣teacher meetings. They let parents and teachers meet face﹣to﹣face to discuss a student's progress and performance.
Lily from China
Communications go both ways here, allowing both the school and parents to discuss concerns or ask questions. These meetings are planned one﹣on﹣one for privacy. They serve to avoid making students or parents feel uncomfortable if the school needs to talk about certain problems, such as a student's performance. While meetings can be planned at any time, the most common are the end-of –term reports. Their teachers use the information collected to provide feedback to families in about10﹣15 minutes.Students often attend these meetings, too.

During their short ride to their new home, Kassie noticed how whites and blacks kept their distance. Even on the bus, they were forced to sit at the back; meanwhile, the whites took the front seats. Kassie couldn’t stop thinking of this strange behavior. She hoped it would be slightly different at school.
Two days later, Kassie got her answer. She entered her classroom and was surprised to find so many white children already seated. She looked for a black child, but saw none, so she decided to find a seat.
“What are you doing?” a red-haired girl asked. Kassie looked at her puzzled, not sure how to reply. “Blacks sit on the back of the room,” the girl said, pointing a finger towards the broken desks at the back of the classroom. Kassie looked at the collection of desks and frowned. Most were broken, and their surfaces were covered with dust and pencil drawings. Kassie hoped that there would be other black children in the class, but as the bell rang, no other children showed up. When the teacher introduced Kassie to the class, everyone looked at her as if she was an alien.
The rest of the week wasn’t any better. Kassie considered asking her parents more than once to let her move back home with her grandparents. But again, the idea of being respectful and grateful kept her quiet.
Boston was a gray city with tall buildings and few trees. There were a few sunny days, and the air was cold. Kassie missed the open countryside, the tall trees, colourful flowers and blue skies. Most of all, she missed her friends and grandparents.

When I was a little boy, I used to be very quiet. At that time my parents were busy with their work. I had to live with my grandparents. It seemed that nobody cared much about me.
One day, a friend of mine, Martin, came in with a nice new watch. It was shiny brightly in the Sun and I knew I wanted it. I took it out of Martin’s pocket.
Shortly after, Martin noticed that his watch was missing and immediately told you about it. You told the class that whoever took it, he should return it. I didn’t give it back. You closed the door and told us all to stand up and form a circle. You were going to search our pockets. However, you asked us to close our eyes because you would only look for his watch if we all had our eyes closed. You searched my pocket and found the watch there. You kept searching everyone’s pockets and when you were done, you said, “We have the watch.” You never said who took the watch to save my dignity (尊严) forever. But it was the greatest shame of my life. You never said anything. You never shouted at me or took me aside to give me a lesson. I received your message clearly.

More than 120 students, representing 105 countries, gave Chinese speeches and showed off their talent in areas such as kung fu, tai chi and calligraphy (书法).
Mackova Victoria, a 15-year-old girl from Slovakia, performed Wuqinxi at the competition. She imitated the movements of a tiger, deer, hear, ape and bird on stage. She gained an interest in traditional martial arts (武术) after she found that it could help her relax her muscles (肌肉) and stay fit. “The 2,000-year-old exercise is cool, but few people have heard of it,” Victoria told Xinhua. “I want more foreign people to appreciate it, as well as appreciate Chinese culture.”

One day on the street, Mr. Wilson met a young man, who asked him, “Do you remember me?” Mr. Wilson said, “No.” Then the young man told him he was his student and now he was a teacher as well. Mr. Wilson asked the young man at what time he decided to be a teacher.
The young man then told him the following story:
“Do you remember this story, Mr. Wilson?” The old man answered, “Yes. I remember the situation with the missing watch. I was looking for it in everyone’s pocket. I didn’t remember you because I closed my eyes, too. You know, young man, I gave knowledge and I also did what a teacher would do for students.”

Billy Ray Harris was homeless. He spent each day on the streets, begging for money or food. Every day, as he sat thinking about his life, he sometimes heard the sound of a coin or two dropping into his cup. One day, the noise was louder than usual. But he didn’t look up. A little later, when he looked into the cup, he could hardly believe what he saw. At the bottom was a big shining diamond ring.
Billy’s first thought was to go to the jeweller’s (珠宝店) and that’s exactly what he did. To his surprise, he was offered $4,000. Was this a mistake? But then he thought about his grandfather. His grandfather always told him to do the right thing. Billy made up his mind. He had better keep the ring and maybe one day its owner would return.
Two days later, a young woman called Sarah came and asked if he had found anything unusual in his cup. Billy reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring. When he saw the smile on Sarah’s face he knew that he ___________. She explained that she forgot putting her ring in her purse (钱包) that day.
Sarah was so moved that she posted the story on the Internet and set up an online appeal (呼吁) to raise money for Billy. Finally she had more than $185,000. Billy Ray Harris no longer spends his days begging. He has a home and a job.
