Thomas Dambo, an environmental artist in Denmark, thinks big. In 2010, he started his first large-scale project: building birdhouses. He and his crew ended up creating 4,000 of them. Now he makes giant trolls (巨怪). So far, 59 trolls can be found at locations all around the world.
His creations are made entirely from items people have thrown away, such as discarded wooden pallets, old fencing, and broken sheds. It’s important to him that he doesn’t add to the growing landfills (垃圾填埋场) on our planet. He thinks of discarded items as art supplies and a source of inspiration.
As a kid, Thomas wanted to build all sorts of things, from a skateboard ramp (坡道) to a tree house in his backyard. He had lots of energy and creativity. The problem was that a kid doesn’t have the money to purchase supplies. He started to bike around the neighborhood looking for discarded wood, rope, and other items to create things.
In 7th grade, a girl in his class gave him a good piece of advice. She told him that he should take a different route each day to experience something new. Thomas took her idea and learned all about his city of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Today, Thomas still uses this idea of taking different routes as he searches for trash left out on curbs. Items such as wire, ropes, wooden pallets, metal, old chair rollers, and plastic containers are just waiting for him to think of a way to use them. If the items are small, he uses “Tingfinder,” his bicycle with a cart attached, to take home his “treasures”. He uses a truck for the larger items.
“My advice is to think about what you really love to do and let that guide you. Keep moving in the direction you’d like to go.” said Thomas.
24. Why does Thomas prefer to use discarded items for his art?
A. They are cheaper than new materials. B. They are more useful and attractive.
C. He wants to reduce waste. D. He can find them more easily.
25. What advice did a girl in Thomas’s class give?
A. Save money by using second-hand supplies. B. Explore new paths to discover something fresh.
C. Focus on different ways to create things. D. Learn about his city before starting any project.
26. Which words can best describe Thomas?
A. Adventurous and curious. B. Childish but imaginative.
C. Changeable but hard-working. D. Responsible and creative.
27. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. Sculpture: a unique hobby B. Trolls: a childhood dream
C. Recycling: a creative journey D. Bicycling: an inspiring sport
C 25. B 26. D 27. C

由文章第四段中“In 7th grade, a girl in his class gave him a good piece of advice. She told him that he should take a different route each day to experience something new. (七年级时,班上的一个女孩给了他一个很好的建议。她告诉他,他应该每天走不同的路线,去体验一些新的东西。)”可知,Thomas的同学建议他探索新路径,发现新鲜事物。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中“Thomas Dambo, an environmental artist in Denmark, thinks big. In 2010, he started his first large-scale project: building birdhouses. He and his crew ended up creating 4,000 of them. (丹麦的环境艺术家托Thomas Dambo想得很远大。2010年,他开始了他的第一个大型项目:建造鸟舍。他和他的团队最终制作了4000个。)”和第二段“His creations are made entirely from items people have thrown away, such as discarded wooden pallets, old fencing, and broken sheds. It’s important to him that he doesn’t add to the growing landfills (垃圾填埋场) on our planet. He thinks of discarded items as art supplies and a source of inspiration.

C
During a 2006 visit to Hudson’s Hope in northern British Columbia, my husband George went flying with a friend, curious to see the landmass beneath his feet from another perspective. They flew over the town of Hudson’s Hope, the Bennett Dam and the Peace River, taking photos as they went. At one point, the pilot told George to take a good look below, where he noted what looked to be large circles carved (刻) into the ground.
“UFO site?” George asked playfully.
“No, but after our flight, I’ll show you an article in the local newspaper on this particular project,” the pilot answered.
The article explained that in 1999 an artist named Deryk Houston made a journey to Baghdad to see the suffering that war had brought to the people of Iraq, which set him on a course to become an artist who uses the earth as his canvas and peace as his inspiration. Upon his return to Peace River Country, he, along with his son, Sam, and volunteer Phil Kirtzinger, constructed a series of concentric circles made of sand, gravel and hay. Symbolic renderings (艺术表达) of a mother and her child were created at the center of the work. Deryk’s hope was that the site would become a permanent sanctuary (永久的圣地) of peace, a place to visit for people searching for spiritual renewal, new hope or just a few precious moments of inner peace.
With most of us here being safe and sound in our own environments, and relatively ignorant of what’s going on in far-away, war-torn countries, how often do we stop to think about the loss of a child or a mother’s struggle to find the necessities of life in the midst of chaos (混乱)? We only come face to face with the facts when they are brought to our attention in a meaningful way. Such was the effect that Deryk’s work had on both my husband and me. While few of us have the talent to create such a monumental tribute (不朽的赞歌) to peace, we can draw inspiration from people like Deryk and do our part, in our own way, to help the cause.
28. What happened during George’s visit to Hudson’s Hope in 2006?
A. He saw a breathtaking sight.
B. He visited some tourist attractions.
C. He encountered a friend who was a pilot.
D. H made headlines in the local newspaper.
29. What led to the construction of the large circles?
A. A UFO. B. An article in 1999.
C. Deryk’s suffering in Iraq. D. Deryk’s journey to Baghdad.
30. What is the purpose of Deryk’s project?
A. To bring peace to people. B. To teach his son a lesson.
C. To attract visitors to the town. D. To help a painful mother and child.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. What is happening in war-torn countries.
B. How the author and her husband were affected.
C. Who should be responsible for a chaotic world.
D. What the author and her husband have contributed to peace.
A 29. D 30. A 31. B

Humans are not the animal kingdom's only fashionistas. Tits ( ill雀) can be fashion followers, too, apparently. A latest study shows that, given the chance, they decorate their nests with this season's must-have colour.
Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin were following up on a study published in 1934 by Henry Smith Williams, an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various coloured balls of yarn (纱) out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season for being included into local birds' nests. But which particular color was favoured varied from season to season. This suggested that the colour chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.
Williams's work was, however, forgotten until they came across it while following up on a different study, published by a team at the University of Toulouse, suggesting fashion-following, too. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin therefore set out to re-run Williams's experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.
The birds they followed were part of a well-monitored population of blue tits in a wood near the institute. Most birds in this wood carried tracking devices fitted to them after their capture in mist nets. That allowed the institute's researchers to keep track of a vast number of individuals by recording their arrival at food containers throughout the wood. Instead of food, these containers were loaded with wool of different colors. Interestingly, researchers soon found that most nests of blue tits included only the color of the wool first chosen by a nestbuildcr.
Tits, then, do seem to be “on trend”, when it comes to nest-building materials. Why that should happen remains obscure. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin suspect the fashion leaders are older birds, and that evolution favours younger ones copying their elders since those elders have evidently survived what fortune has to throw at a tit. Williams’s original work, though, suggests such initial choices are at random-a bit like those of the leaders of human fashions.
32. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin contributed to William's work.
B. Early birds' color preference was copied by their fellows.
C. The yam was the most popular material to decorate local birds' nests.
D. The color of the yam favored by local birds was fixed throughout the year.
33. How did Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin improve William's experiment?
A. They observed the blue tits.
B. They studied the habits of blue tits.
C. They adopted the data-collecting method.
D. They fitted tracking devices to food containers.
34. What does the underlined word “obscure” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Hidden. B. Evident. C. Complicated. D. Shallow.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A Birds favor certain colors in decoration.
B. Young birds follow their elders in fashion.
C. Young birds are just as intelligent as people.
D. Birds are just as fashion-conscious as people.
B 33. C 34. A 35. D

根据第二自然段“He noticed that when he put various coloured balls of yarn (纱) out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season for being included into local birds' nests. But which particular color was favoured varied from season to season. This suggested that the colour chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others. (他注意到,当他把各种颜色的纱线球放在花园里时,几乎总是有一种,而且只有一种因为被放进当地的鸟巢而在那个季节流行起来。但哪种颜色受到青睐因季节而异。这表明,其中一只早期鸟类选择的颜色被其他鸟类发现并模仿了。)”可知,最开始的鸟类的颜色偏好被它们的同伴模仿了。故选B。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三自然段“Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin therefore set out to re-run Williams's experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers. (因此,Wild博士和Aplin博士开始重新进行Williams的实验,但这次是为了收集一些实际数字。)”可知,Wild博士和Aplin博士采用了数据收集的方法来改进Williams的实验。故选C。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第五自然段“Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin suspect the fashion leaders are older birds, and that evolution favours younger ones copying their elders since those elders have evidently survived what fortune has to throw at a tit. (Wild博士和Aplin博士怀疑时尚界的领导者都是年纪较大的鸟,进化倾向于年轻人模仿他们的长辈,因为这些长辈显然在命运的洗礼中幸存了下来。)”中的suspect可推知,为什么会发生这种情况还不清楚。obscure意为“不清楚的;隐蔽的”。A. Hidden.隐蔽的;B. Evident.显然的;C. Complicated.复杂的;D. Shallow. 故选A。

D项“Birds are just as fashion-conscious as people.

前文“When I was young, I loved being around people. I had many friends, and usually, I’d get along with everyone. (当我年轻的时候,我喜欢和人在一起。我有很多朋友,通常我和每个人都相处得很好。)”介绍作者年轻时与人相处的经历,后文“I listened more than I spoke and gave my best advice to others to build a safe and comfortable environment for them. (我听的比说的多,给别人最好的建议,为他们建立一个安全舒适的环境。)”具体说明作者在与人相处时主要是倾听和提建议,空处应该是总的指出倾听者的角色,因此D项“My role in most of the communications I had was a listener. (在大多数交流中,我的角色都是倾听者。)”符合语境,承前启后,其中的listener和后文的listened呼应。故选D。
【37题详解】
前文“Over the years, my thoughts changed. (这些年来,我的想法改变了。)”提到作者想法改变了,空处应该与作者从倾听转变为表达相关,因此A项“I felt the need to express myself. (我觉得有必要表达自己。)”符合语境,承接前文。故选A。
前文“Sometimes I even felt stressed. Especially in small friend groups, I felt like we just needed to be entertained most of the time and that it was my job to make that happen. I felt that being quiet was not cool or fun. (有时我甚至感到压力。特别是在小的朋友群里,我觉得我们大部分时间都需要娱乐,而我的工作就是让这一切发生。我觉得保持安静既不酷也不好玩。)”描述作者在社交群中不舒适的感受,后文“But even if that was the case, I didn’t necessarily want to cut ties awkwardly. Nothing good comes out of that. (但即使是这样,我也不一定想尴尬地断绝关系。这样做没有任何好处。)”包含转折,表明作者不打算断绝关系,空处应该与作者怀疑自己交友不正确有关,因此G项“I questioned whether I was just hanging out with the wrong group of people. (我怀疑自己是不是和错误的一群人在一起。)”符合语境,承接前文,和后文构成转折。故选G。
【39题详解】
后文“I enjoy any kind of friend group setting. I use my past experience and get the best out of it. I truly enjoy being around people, but I also enjoy my alone time. I think that balance is key and enjoying that harmony is what makes life beautiful.
后文“I start my day with myself to check in and meet my needs first, and then continue with my responsibilities and interact with others. This way I am less likely to enter negative environments and let negative energies influence me. (我的一天从自己开始,首先检查并满足自己的需求,然后继续履行我的责任并与他人互动。这样我就不太可能进入消极的环境,让消极的能量影响我。)”介绍作者首先考虑自己的需求,再去与人相处,从而避免消极感受,空处作为段首句,应该与利用独处的时间有关,因此F项“More than ever before, I’ve been setting time aside for my alone time. (我比以往任何时候都更愿意留出独处的时间。)”符合语境,契合后文内容。故选F。

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)(原题改编)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The summer I turned 16, my father gave me his 69 Chevy Malibu convertible (敞篷车). Beautifully repainted cherry red with V-8 engine—it was a gift wasted on me at that age. What did I know about classic cars? The important thing was that Hannah and I could drive around Tucson with the top down.
Hannah was my best friend, a year younger but much taller, almost five foot ten.“Hannah’s a beautiful girl,” my mother always said. And sure enough, that summer she signed with a modeling agency. She was already doing runway work .
A month after my birthday, Hannah and I went to the movies. On the way home, we stopped at the McDonald’s drive-through, putting the fries on the seat between us to share. “Let’s ride around a-while,” I said. It was a clear night, oven-warm, full moon casting low over the desert. Making a turn too fast, I hit a patch of dirt and the back of the car slid to the other side. I then drove through a neighbor’s landscape wall and knocked into a full-grown palm. The front wheels came to rest half way up the tree trunk.
There were French fries on the floor, the dash (仪表盘), and my lap. An impossible amount of blood was on Hannah’s face, flaps of skin hanging into her eyes. They took us in separate ambulances. In the ER, my parents spoke quietly: “Best plastic surgeon in the city…but it is more likely to be the end of her modeling career.…”
We’d been wearing lap belts, but the car didn’t have shoulder bands. I’d broken my cheek bone on the steering wheel; Hannah’s forehead had split wide open on the dash. What would I say to her?
When her mother, Sharon, came into my hospital room, I started to cry, preparing myself for her anger. She sat beside me and took my hand. “I rear-ended (追尾) my best friend when I was your age,” she said. “I destroyed her car and mine.” “I’m so sorry.” I said, knowing Sharon was trying her best to comfort me and helping me out of my terrible sense of guilt and self-blame.
注意:
“The most important is that you’re both alive. I forgive you and Hannah will too.” She said.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sharon’s forgiveness allowed Hannah and me to return to our normal life.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“The most important is that you’re both alive. I forgive you and Hannah will too.” She said. I still couldn’t forgive myself for the harm caused to Hannah, trapped in deep self-accusation and regret. Aware of my desperation, Sharon took me in her arms, patting me on the back. I plucked up enough courage to request her to take me to Hannah’s ward. Seeing me getting close to her bed on the wheelchair pushed by her mother, Hannah asked eagerly, “Are you all right?” Tears of joy and relief poured down our cheeks.
Sharon’s forgiveness allowed Hannah and me to return to our normal life. We got back to be in the car together that summer, to stay friends throughout high school and college, to be in each other’s weddings, and to watch my four teenagers fawn over her three younger children. I think of her gift of forgiveness every time I’m tempted to resent someone for a perceived wrong. The scars are so faded that no one else would notice, but in the sunlight I can still see the faint shimmer just below her hairline—for me, an imprint of grace.

“My advice is to think about what you really love to do and let that guide you Keep moving in the direction you’d like to go.” said Thomas.
C Deryk’s suffering in Iraq.
D
A. Birds favor certain colors in decoration.
B. Young birds follow their elders in fashion.
C. Young birds are just as intelligent as people.
D Birds are just as fashion-conscious as people.

There were French fries on the floor the dash (仪表盘), and my lap.
