Shadow play, known as "Ying zi xi" in Chinese, is a kind of ancient shadow art. It has a
history of about 2. ooo years in China, India and Southeast Asia. The moving shadows on a screen
are used to tell history and folk stories. And hand shadow is one of the simplest ways to make
shadow play. With a bit of practise, most people can change the shape of hands to make animals
like dogs and birds, on the wall
Today, shadow art has developed into one more creative style. In the spring of 2016, Vincent
Bal, an artist in Europe, turned the shadows into a clever art form-shadow drawing. He named
this special drawing "Shadowology". In the Shadowology, a little drawing is added into the
shadows of everyday things to create wonderful pictures
Like most good things in life, Shadowology came by accident. One day, during a break from
work, Bal noticed that the shadow of his teacup looked like a little elephant. He drew eyes, legs
and a smile for the shadow, and took a photo of that. After sharing the photo on the Internet, Bal
surprisingly found people's love for it, which encouraged him to continue
Since then, Bal has got 6oo,ooo fans on the Internet. He keeps producing as many different
shadow works as possible. For example, he made a pair of sunglasses look like the wings of a
butterfly, and a bottle become a lamp. All his works are interesting and playful. In 2o23, Bal
finished Shadowology films and a museum exhibition
Nowadays, Shadowology has won the hearts of people around the world. With the wonderful
drawing, people have got a chance to see the beauty in everyday things and discover the joy all

Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night's sleep every night
Most experts agree that the optimum(最佳的) number of hours is eight. However, I was young
once and I know that most of you get much less sleep than that-and in some cases it will
influence your schoolwork
I read an interesting article in a teachers' magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students
in Wales. Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to
bed and get up at proper times but a growing number are waking up in the middle of the night, just
because of a new phenomenon (现象): FOMO-fear of missing out!
Afraid of missing a comment (评论) or chances to take part in a chat, teenagers are waking a
all times of the night to go online. All this when they should be sound asleep.
Experts are worried about this growing trend (趋 势) and the report shows some worrying
numbers that I'd like to share with you:
23% of 12 to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use social media(社交 媒体)
Another 15% wake up at night once a week for the same reason
One in three students are often tired and unable to perform well during the daytime. Students
who use social media during the night are more probable to experience more stress.
So, I'd like to ask you to be responsible when it comes to social media. Be brave! Turn off
your phones at night. The world won't end and your social media will be waiting to greet you in
the morning! I give you my word that you won't miss anything important
47. Which of the following is TRUE about the study?
A. The study shows that the optimum number of hours is eight
B. The study was done of 848 students and teachers in Wales
C. The results of study are worrying to the writer
D. The study shows that less sleep will do harm to students' schoolwork
48. According to the passage, FOMO is
A. worrying about not having the latest technology
B. a need to go out all the time
C. a fear of missing chances for communicating on social media
D. a serious illness
49. The report shows that one in three students are tired because
A. they go to bed too late
B. they wake up in the middle of the night to use social media
C. they get up too early in the morning
D. they have problems falling asleep
50. Which of the following would the author (作者) most probably agree with
A. Students should be brave enough to fight against FOMO
B. The students will surely miss something important if they turn off their phones at night
C. Students who use social media during the night have more friends
D. The social media is waiting for the students during the night
