Dino Impagliazzo, also known as “the chef (厨师) of the poor”, passed away at the age of 91 on July 25,2021, in Rome, Italy. For his last 16 years, he spent nearly every minute helping feed the poor and homeless in Rome.
Impagliazzo was not one to sit around, even after retiring (退休). He wanted to help his community. One day, he met a homeless man in need of money for a sandwich.
“I realized that perhaps instead of buying one sandwich, making some sandwiches for him and for the friends who were there would be better, and thus began our adventure,” Impagliazzo told The New York Post.
Impagliazzo and some other retired friends started making sandwiches at home and sharing them with hungry people in their community. They named their group RomAmoR, which means “RomeLove”. As they continued, more and more members joined RomAmoR.
They didn’t only help in communities. On Saturday nights, they started going to St. Peter’s Square to feed the large numbers of homeless people who sleep in the area. Later, the group started to offer their help to people all over Rome, hoping to make sure everyone in the city felt loved and cared for.
Impagliazzo’s kindness and hard work made him well-known in the country. In 2020, Italy’s president gave him an award (荣誉), calling him a “hero of our times.”
Thanks to RomAmoR, which continues to make a difference to the lives of others, those facing hard times can get help and experience the warmth of kindness.

Unexpected heavy rain hit the Sahara Desert several weeks ago. It caused flooding and left large areas of water in the desert.
The Sahara is the world’s largest hot desert. It covers nearly all of northern Africa. The desert does experience rain, but it’s usually just a few inches a year. It also seldom happens in late summer. Over two days in September, however, a low-pressure system pushed across the northwestern Sahara. Heavy rain then fell in parts of the desert in southeast Morocco.
Several parts of the country received a year’s worth of rain in two days. In a village called Tagounite, more than 100 millimeters of rainfall (降雨量) was recorded in a 24-hour period. Satellite imagery showed that Lake Iriqui was full afterwards. Local people said the lake had been dry for a long time.
“It’s been 30 to 50 years since we last had this much rain in such a short time,” said Houssine Youabeb. He works in Morocco’s meteorology (气象学) agency.
This kind of rain is called an extratropical storm. Experts said it may change the weather conditions in the region in the coming months and years. This is because the air holds more tiny drops of water after the rainfall. The wetter air will cause more evaporation (蒸发). According to scientists, similar storms could happen in the Sahara in the future.
Drought (旱灾) has been a problem in many parts of Morocco. Farmers are forced to leave their fields and communities are limited (限制) in their water use. This rainfall may help refill the underground aquifers (地下出水层) in the region. It is very important to life in these desert areas. However, the long-term impact on the drought remains uncertain.
29. According to the text, the Sahara Desert’s rainfall is usually ________.
A. high B. low C. just right D. very strange
30. In many parts of Morocco, communities ________.
A. are offered much water B. are stopped to use water
C. are forced to use rain water D. are unable to use water freely
31. What does the underlined word “impact” mean?
A. Storm. B. Study. C. Effect. D. Problem.
32. From the text we can infer (推断) that the heavy rain may ________.
A. bring local people a lot of problems
B. last in the coming months and years
C. be of certain benefit to these desert areas
D. make these desert areas become full of rain
D
①When you hear the word “home,” you probably think of the place you are living in right now. Maybe it is an apartment, a single house, or a two-story house. Maybe it is made of wood or stone. You may think houses are rather normal buildings, but some houses around the world are rather unique (独特的)!
②The Bedouin people of the Middle East and North Africa live in interesting homes. The Bedouin people live in the desert, and they move around without staying to live in one place very long. So, they live in tents that are made of animal hair. The tents are easy to put up and take down when they move from place to place. In a similar way, a group of Mongolian people of the Gobi Desert also live in tents rather than buildings. These homes, called “ger” homes, are also made of animal hair, but they are round instead of square like Bedouin tents.
③Another type of home is the “igloo” used by the Inuit people of Canada and Greenland. Igloos are normally made of ice and snow. The igloo protects the people from the wind as well as keeps them warm. In fact, the temperature inside an igloo can even reach 16°C just from body heat alone.
④The Bagabao people of the Philippines used to live in what may be a childhood dream for some—a treehouse! These treehouses were built so that the people could watch for enemies and protect themselves from wild and dangerous animals. Although the Bagabao people don’t live in these treehouses anymore, they still use things like them for resting and for meeting people.
⑤If you ever get the chance, be sure to check out different homes of different cultures!
33. What can be the best title for this text?
A. Normal buildings B. Childhood dreams
C. Different cultures in the world D. Homes around the world
34. The author thinks one of the igloo’s advantages is that ________.
A. the igloo can keep warm
B. the igloo is easy to put up
C. the igloo can be used for meeting people
D. the igloo protects people from wild animals
35. What kind of home do the Bagabao people live in?
A. Tents. B. Treehouses. C. The igloos. D. The “ger” homes.
36. How is the text organized?
(①=Paragraph1, ②=Paragraph2, …)
A. B. C. D.

Are there any arguments (争吵) in your family? How do you deal with such problems?
Sometimes, families can be hard. Arguments happen. People get upset. Sometimes they stop talking. Our family has had lots of ups and downs.
I have an older brother and an older sister. I’m the younger brother of the family. We grew up in quite a small house and often didn’t have a lot of money. My mum and dad argued, pretty much all the time, over just about anything. My brother and sister argued. And I used to argue too. But as I got older, I always chose to be the mediator, the person who tries to look at both sides of the argument and tries to bring the arguing parties together to make peace.
I learned much growing up in an argumentative family. Patience understanding, and the knowledge that sometimes things just don’t go your way.
We all make mistakes. We all say things we wish we hadn’t. The key is to try and understand. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and stay calm. Of course, sometimes, arguments do need to happen.
If something is wrong, it needs solving. Sometimes, we get angry about it. But as long as we can reflect (反省) and look at things with an attitude (态度) of care and responsibility (责任), we can solve the problems and help each other out.

Dear Aunt Linda,
I read your advice page every week. It is very useful. I’m writing this letter to ask you to do me a favor. Recently, I’ve been busy reviewing my English, but unfortunately I find it difficult to focus on my studies because of some problems. First, I have to spend so much time on my homework that I hardly have time to memorize English words and phrases. Besides, the high expectation from my parents makes me very stressful. They think I don’t work hard enough. But I don’t think so. I would really appreciate it if you could help me. I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hui
