Cai Lei, former vice-president of JD Group, reveals how amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis (诊断) set him on the path to find a cure.
Born to a farmer’s family in 1978, Cai has been deeply influenced by his father’s idea that “one has to fight for himself”. Since primary school, he has been getting up before 5 am to run and study English. At 29, Cai became chief tax manager in Vanke Co. In 2011, he joined JD Group, where he led his team to develop the first electronic invoice (发票) in China. Wherever he worked, he always tried his best to create new value.
Diagnosed with ALS in 2019, he would have only two to five years to live. ALS is usually caused by the gradual death of motor neurons (神经元), which makes normally easy movements like drinking water, eating, going to the bathroom, and speaking impossible. Finally, patients will completely rely on machines and others’ help to survive. So far, only two medicines are available to treat ALS, but they can at most extend patients’ life for several months without improving their living quality.
To develop effective drugs is the only way to save ALS patients. However, the intense effort required, which is unprofitable for so rare an illness, makes it a mission almost impossible. It usually takes 10-15 years to complete the research cycle for a new drug and the cost is $1-3billion. Take Alzheimer’s disease for example. Between 2000 and 2017, investment in new drugs for this more common disease was over $600 billion, and 99.6% of the research on more than 300 drugs failed.
Cai decided to take matters into his own hands. He started his own medical technology company, built his own research team, and volunteered to try more than 30 new medicines which all failed. However, he has decided that even if all efforts prove fruitless, he will continue. To shoot the last bullet, he has decided to donate his brain and spinal cord for scientific research. He will not die for nothing.
4. What kind of person is Cai Lei?
A. Extremely ambitious and well-mannered. B. Quite reliable and clear-headed.
C. Highly motivated and strong-willed. D. Well informed and warm-hearted.
5. What might happen to people diagnosed with ALS?
A. Maintaining a normal life by taking medicines.
B. Losing the ability to think and speak normally.
C. Needing external assistance to survive in the end.
D. Dying within months of a confirmed diagnosis.
6. Why is Alzheimer’s disease mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To prove Alzheimer to be a common disease.
B. To talk about the severity of Alzheimer.
C. To ask for more investment in the research on ALS.
D. To explain the difficulty of finding a cure for ALS.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A man who never gives in. B. Joint efforts to fight ALS.
C. ASL, a rare deadly disease. D. Suffering of a man with ALS.

Chinese hit video game Black Myth: Wukong has taken the gaming world by storm, selling more than 10 million copies across all platforms in just three days after its release.
The game is inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. In it, players take the role of the Destined One, setting off for adventures to collect six Relics that once belonged to Sun Wukong and challenge the Celestial Court.
Drawing on a rich heritage of nearly 1,000 years of Chinese culture, the game’s storyline and characters have proven difficult to understand for many players from western countries. For instance, a player shared on social media that their lack of familiarity with Journey to the West led to them consistently missing hidden treasures, finally resulting in repeated failures during a boss fight in Chapter 2. Meanwhile, some players feel overwhelmed by names like Erlang Shen and Lingxuzi, which can be difficult to pronounce for those unfamiliar with Chinese phonetics.
To bridge these cultural divides, one enthusiast wrote a 200-page outline detailing Sun Wukong’s abilities across all 100 chapters of Journey to the West. Many others immersed themselves in the epic by checking out forums, TV shows, anime, manga and online encyclopedias.
Through this process, western players have not only refined their gaming skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for Sun Wukong and Journey to the West.
“Although many people might compare Sun Wukong to Western superheroes, I believe they are different,” said Patrick from the US. “Sun Wukong has a carefree and independent nature, unlimited by the need to set a good example for others like Spider-Man, who by contrast follows principles like ‘with great power comes great responsibility’.”
Journey to the West offers a comprehensive narrative that covers a very dangerous journey, numerous encounters and the exploration of various cultures, making it a rich source for diverse storytelling types and cultural backgrounds.
Perhaps these are some of the key reasons why Journey to the West has been translated into over a dozen languages, with more than 60 versions available worldwide.
8. What is the Destined One in Paragraph 2?
A. The nickname of Sun Wukong in the game.
B. The fictional main character of this hit game.
C. One of the adventures to collect the six Relics.
D One of the six Relics belonging to the Celestial Court.
9. What does the underlined word “bridge” in paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Get rid of. B. Take control of. C. Keep track of D. Take advantage of.
10. What can be learned about the game from the passage?
A. It has gradually gained popularity among players worldwide.
B. Its original character Sun Wukong is similar to western superheroes.
C. It has been translated into many languages with numerous versions available worldwide.
D. It is rather challenging for western players due to their unfamiliarity with Chinese culture.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. A Chinese hit video game and its original novel Journey to the West.
B. Reasons behind the success of Chinese video game Black Myth: Wukong.
C. The cultural impact and western players’ reception of a Chinese hit video game.
D. Challenges and benefits Black Myth: Wukong brings to the spread of Chinese culture.

In 1910, the Los Angeles Times ran a story about a boy who was charged with opening a valve on a water pump powered by a steam engine to release the built-up pressure. His whole job consisted of staring at these machines all day, which was incredibly boring. The “lazy” boy then invented a release for the pump to run just as it should and won his freedom. The first automatic steam engine was born.
This story may be fictional, but the boy’s behavior reflects a deeper truth. When we are feeling lazy, we often search for an easier way, trying to update the process and save time and effort. In other words, laziness can drive innovation.
In recent years, some psychologists and business leaders have wised up to this insight, changing our perspective of what laziness really means. Both Bill Gates and Walter Chrysler have been credited with a quote: “I always choose a lazy person to do a hard job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.”
Our brains are born for laziness. Compared with our ancestors who had to conserve energy to compete for food, flee from predators, and fight, we now don’t take survival as a daily issue. It seems natural that we would choose to be “lazier”, but the opposite has occurred. According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans sleep less and work more than we used to; productivity per worker has gone up 400 percent since 1950. Our culture teaches us that our worth depends on how industrious we are, so we work even harder to produce even more.
But there’s one big paradox, sad but true: The harder we work, the less productive we are. When demand increases, we tend to push harder. Yet the trouble is that, without any refresh and recharge, we are less efficient, make more mistakes, and get less engaged with what we’ re doing.
Therefore, how can we make our labor more meaningful and our lives more fulfilling? Current research in psychology and neuroscience points to a new understanding of the value of the wandering mind. Taking breaks and allowing your thoughts to drift can help your brain retain information, refocus, and gain fresh perspective.
Here’s the core problem: When the time finally comes to put our feet up, we often don’t know how. We have little training in how to be idle. But at least give it a shot. Maybe this week, notice some downtime in your day, some white space in your calendar. Instead of filling the space with more work, just sit in the sofa. and be, in the words of poet Mary Oliver, “idle and blessed.”
12. The author tells the story in paragraph I to prove ________.
A. the kid needs punishing B. boredom enhances productivity
C. creativity contributes to laziness D. laziness inspires new ideas
13 How did the author support his opinion in the third paragraph?
A. By listing some numbers of being lazy. B. By quoting some great figures’ words.
C. By making a comparison between two great figures. D. By giving examples of how to be creative.
14. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. People nowadays don’t have to face poverty. B. Modern society honors creativity.
C. Americans lives a poorer life than before. D. Ancestors consider industry as a value.
15. Which of the following idea will the author probably agree with?
A. Working 24 — 7 with a tight schedule.
B. Taking three part-time jobs to fill weekends.
C. Watching a stand-up comedy after a busy weekday.
D. Attending a formal dinner with business purpose.

It was the most beautiful motorbike and the first of its kind in the neighborhood, a magic blue one with two smart rear-view mirrors. It belonged to Ranjan’s uncle. Overnight, Ranjan had become a prince among us boys.
We surrounded him the next day, wanting to learn more details. Ranjan’s uncle had come from Bombay, riding the new motorbike. Every afternoon when he slept, we would gather around the blue bike, admiring it. Sometimes Ranjan managed to take out his uncle's red helmet (头盔). We would wear it in turn and sit on the bike, imagining starting it and being off. In the evenings, we watched Ranjan go out for a ride with his uncle and our eyes were filled with envy (羡慕).
One Monday morning I was struggling with the homework when Ranjan whispered in my ear, “I am learning to ride it, Tony.” “What?” I doubted. “I will show you this afternoon. ”Ranjan sounded confident.
Ranjan, like the rest of us, knew everything about the motorbike, every part of it. But to ride it was another story. Like all grown-ups, his uncle had this belief that fourteen-year-olds could not ride things like motorbikes. It is unfair really.
The big moment came at last. After lunch, I came to meet Ranjan, who appeared at the gate seconds later, wearing the red helmet. Noiselessly, he wheeled the bike out of the gate. He looked around carefully, pushed it down the road, and started it. “Get on, boy!”I felt excited as I climbed onto the back seat, but still could not believe that he could ride it. “Ready?”Ranjan shouted. “Yeah. What are you waiting for?”
We were off. The road was nearly empty and we were moving smoothly. I had a look at the speedometer (速度计): 30 kmph. How cool it was!

C To ask for more investment in the research on ALS.

D. One of the six Relics belonging to the Celestial Court.

This story may be fictional but the boy’s behavior reflects a deeper truth.

A By listing some numbers of being lazy. B. By quoting some great figures’ words.

A. People nowadays don’t have to face poverty. B. Modern society honors creativity.
C. Americans lives a poorer life than before. D. Ancestors consider industry as a value.

【答案】 Getting to Know the Plants Around Us
Last weekend, I participated in a “Getting to Know the Plants Around Us” activity organised by our Students’ Union.
The activity began with a lecture by a local botanist, who taught us about the different characteristics and uses of various plant species. We then went on a natural walk to observe and collect samples of different plants. Throughout the event, I was struck by the incredible variety of plants that exist in our world and learned about plants that are used for medical purposes, as well as those that provide food and shelter for animals. I also gained a greater appreciation for the role that plants play in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem.
Overall, it was a valuable and enriching experience.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Suddenly, a dog rushed out and ran across the road. “Hey, Ranjan stop!” I yelled, gripping his shoulders. Our minds raced, trying to think of a way to do something. But it was too late. In the twinkling of an eyelid, he stepped on the brakes and the motorbike screeched to a halt. No sooner had we knocked into the poor dog than we stopped our motorbike. In a daze, I saw the dog sprawling on the road, without moving a muscle. At the same time, we were thrown to the ground heavily, so was the most beautiful motorbike.
We picked up the motorbike and founded our mirror was missing. “What shall we do?” He muttered. I shook my head, helplessly. We walked slowly on the way home, with our legs trembling and our hearts bumping nearly out of check. It seemed like hundreds of years before we approached home. How we wished we could wheeled into the yard quitely. However, uncle had waited for us out the door. He gazed at the motorbike, unbelievable. “We are really sorry, but... .” Silence surrounded us. “It’s nothing serious. But alway remember safety is alway the first important.” So ashamed was I that we could feel the blood rush to my face. YES, overconfidence comes at cost.
