It all started when he got an old photo album from one of his followers two years ago. The album was from World War II and had photos of China back then. Some of the photos showed the really bad things the Japanese invaders did during the war, like the Nanjing Massacre(南京大屠杀). When Evan saw these photos, he felt really sad. He thought these photos were so important that they shouldn't be in private hands. So, he made a video about the album on TikTok and it got a lot of attention, especially from Chinese people. Then he decided to donate the album to China. Because of this kind act, the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago gave him a very special gift—a state gift porcelain. He became the only living international friend to receive such an honor. This year, Evan came to China for a month-long visit. He started his trip in Beijing on November 16. Before he even got here, a lot of people in China knew about his visit and welcomed him on social media. They invited him to visit different places. When he was in Beijing, he went to the Temple of Heaven and opened a copy of the photo album. He was thinking about how much things have changed in the past 90 years. He also visited the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. He said he was really excited to be in these places where the photos in the album were taken. After Beijing, he went to Tianjin, Shanghai, and Nanjing. In Nanjing, he went to the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders. He said this trip was going to be one of the most unforgettable experiences in his life. He also said that China is different from what he heard in the US. For example, he found that Beijing is a very clean city, but in US media, it's sometimes described as dirty and polluted. Evan's interest in WWII (二战)began a long time ago because his grandfather was a captain in the US military in the Pacific. But he didn't know much about China before. So in the past two years, he started to learn about China. He read books about Chinese history and culture and even studied Mandarin. He thinks a lot of people in the US don't know much about China and only get little bits of information from the news. He wants to change that. He believes that peace between the two countries comes from good communication and understanding, and the best way to do that is through culture. So he is trying to be a bridge between China and the US, to bring the two countries closer and let people from both sides understand each other better. He is really excited about this journey and hopes it's just the beginning of a long and friendly relationship between the two great nations. 1.What was in the old photo album that Evan Kail got? A. Photos of his grandfather in the US military. B. Photos of the beautiful scenery in China. C. Photos of the crimes committed by Japanese invaders during WWII. D. His donation of the photo album was highly appreciated. C. Chinese people like Americans who study Mandarin. D. He is a famous social media star in the US. 3.Why does Evan Kail want to be a bridge between China and the US? A. Because his grandfather asked him to do so. B. Because he wants to make money by promoting cultural exchange. C. Because he hopes to become more popular in both countries. D. Trump has promised to make tariffs a key focus of his second term. He wants a 10 percent baseline (基准) tariff on all US imports and a 60 percent tariff on Chinese goods, according to CBS News. He also threatened to put tariffs on countries such as Mexico and Canada. But what are tariffs? A tariff is a tax a country puts on goods imported (进口) from abroad, explained The Guardian. While Trump claims (声称) foreign countries pay these tariffs, they are actually paid by US companies importing the goods, with the costs often passed on to consumers (消费者). Tariffs aim to protect industries in the US but also raise prices for groceries. Another often-ignored part is that Trump plans to use tariffs to make up for $7.5 trillion (about 55 trillion yuan) in government revenue (收入) lost from new and permanent tax cuts (永久性减税) over the next 10 years, The Guardian noted. The effect of these tariffs on consumers could be serious. Economists have argued that tariffs can lead to inflation (通货膨胀), making goods more expensive, CNN reported. The Peterson Institute for International Economics estimates (估计) Trump’s planned tariffs would cost the average US family over $2,600 each year. This policy is especially confusing since the top three countries Trump plans to put tariffs on – Canada, Mexico and China – are also the US’ biggest trading partners. These three countries made up 43 percent of imports in 2023, worth more than $1.3 trillion, according to the US Census Bureau. These important goods include oil from Canada and avocados (牛油果) and cars produced in Mexico. Therefore, targeting (针对) these countries with tariffs would greatly harm the US economy itself. While tariffs can protect certain industries in some cases, they often disrupt (扰乱) global trade in the process. Retaliatory (报复性的) tariffs from targeted countries risk causing greater tensions (紧张局势) and economic losses. Canada and Mexico, for example, have already suggested they plan to retaliate with tariffs of their own, which could further reduce demand (需求) for US goods abroad. As Liu Pengyu, spokesperson of the Chinese embassy in the US, put it: “No one will win a trade war.” 1. According to the passage, who will actually pay the increased tariffs proposed by Trump? A. The US government. B. US companies and consumers. C. The exporting countries’ companies. D. The exporting countries’ governments. 2. What is one of the purposes of Trump’s proposed tariffs, according to The Guardian? A. To boost US exports. B. To reduce grocery prices. C. To attract foreign investment. D. To cover government revenue lost from tax cuts. 3. Why would targeting Canada, Mexico and China with tariffs be harmful to the US economy? A. They are the largest exporters to the US. B. They offer cheaper goods. C. They are major trading partners of the US. D. They always support US tariff policies. 4. What is Liu Pengyu’s opinion on a trade war? A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Neutral. 阅读理解C ROOOOAAARRRRR! China’s newest carrier rocket (运载火箭), the Long March 12, made its first flight on Nov 30 in Hainan. It is special in many ways. The Long March 12 is the first Chinese rocket with a diameter (直径) of 3.8 meters. Most Chinese rockets are 3.35 meters wide, a limit set in the 1960s for transporting things by rail. A wider body allows the rocket to hold 30 percent more propellant (推进剂) and carry heavier things, said Wu Jialin, one of the engineers who helped make the rocket. The launch also used a new technology called tethered release technology (牵制释放技术). Before, rockets would launch as soon as they had enough thrust (推力). Now, with the new technology, rockets don’t just take off straight away. They stay still for a short time. During this time, workers quickly check for problems. If everything looks good, the rocket is then launched. This makes sure that both the rocket and things on the ground are safe, Xie Li from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp told CCTV. More importantly, the Long March 12 is the first rocket launched at China’s first commercial launch site (商业发射场), the Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Center. The site has two launch towers. The No 2 tower can launch over 10 kinds of rockets, different from government-run sites’ towers that can only launch one kind. This is possible because the tower uses an interface (接口) for different rocket sizes, Chief Commander Yan Liqing told Science and Technology Daily.  The Long March 12 will help China build broadband satellite networks (宽带卫星网络) to provide internet to areas away from big cities across the country, reported South China Morning Post. 1. According to Paragraph 2, how is the Long March 12 different from most other Chinese rockets? A. It is lighter. B. It is wider. C. It is greener. D. It is longer. 2. Why is the tethered release technology helpful to launch a rocket? A. It gives the rocket more thrust.   B. It lets the rocket take off straight away. C. It helps the workers find a safer launch site.   D. It allows for quick problem checks before launch. 3. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. China’s first commercial launch site. B. Different launch towers in the world.  C. How the launch site was chosen. D. What technology was used in the launch. 4. What is the main purpose of the recent launch? A. To test the tethered release technology. B. To renew the limit set for transporting things by rail. C. To test the newly built commercial launch site. D. To improve the internet connection across China. 5. What is the structure of the passage?  阅读理解D When babies are really young, they like to copy what their parents say. But at some point, they start becoming “creators”. So when does this change happen? According to a new study by scientists from the University of Chicago in the US, English-speaking children start making their own sentences at about 2.5 years old. To do this, kids need to first understand the rules of the language. For English, one important rule is that determiners (限定词), like “a” and “the”, go in front of nouns (名词). For 90 minutes every four months, the scientists recorded 64 English-speaking children talking with their parents. The scientists found that at around 30 months old, kids started using both “a” and “the” in front of the same noun, for example, “dog”. This showed that they understood the determiner-noun language pattern (模式). What’s more, they were using the pattern to create more expressions their parents had never said. But the recordings cannot cover everything the kids hear and say each day. So, the scientists developed an AI model to double-check their findings. Like a human child, the model could find language patterns in the recordings and predict the words to come. “For the most part, it does what the kid does,” Susan Goldin-Meadow, one of the scientists, told Neuroscience News. The team then waited to see when the model produced its first new determiner-noun phrase (短语). The result agreed with the 30-month timeframe (时间表).  The findings further scientists’ understanding of language learning. It can also help better teach kids with special needs, such as those learning sign language, wrote the scientists in their paper. 1. What does “creators” mean in Paragraph 1? A. Children who make their own decisions. B. Children who can understand a language. C. Children who copy their parents’ words. D. Children who make their own sentences. 2. How did scientists know that children create rather than copy sentences? A. By checking if they can read and write. B. By checking if they can make complete sentences. C. By seeing if they produce new determiner-noun phrases. D. By seeing if they understand most rules of the English language.  3. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How scientists prepared for the study. B. How scientists did the study and what results they got. C. What language patterns children prefer to use. D. What the determiner-noun language pattern is. 4. How did the AI model help in the study? A. It showed how children learn language rules. B. It explained why children use the determiner-noun pattern. C. It predicted when children start making their own sentences. D. It discovered how children can express themselves with a few words.  5. Why did scientists do the study? A. To study the timeframe of children’s growth. B. To look deeper into the process of language learning. C. To test the use of AI models in scientific studies. D. To help children better understand sign language.  阅读理解E Have you ever heard of minimalism(极简主义)? It is the practice of making life easier by decluttering (整理) and letting go, trying to make life simpler and happier. For example, minimalists throw away things they don’t need and focus on building strong friendships instead of having too many friends they don’t care much about. This year, minimalism has become more popular, with many people sharing their minimalist habits online. According to Taizhou Daily, the topic “minimalism” on Xiaohongshu has already reached over 3.1 billion views. “It helps me think about why I care so much about material things instead of myself,” one user shared. While minimalism has its good points, I believe it also has some problems. Minimalists often try to control every part of their lives, which can lead to worrying too much and chasing perfection. “To avoid buying things I don’t need, I spend too much time looking at the good and bad sides instead of just deciding,” one person shared online. “I’ve done this before; it’s a waste of time.” The pressure to make every part of life perfect can make people feel nervous and stressed. When they can’t keep up with this idea, they may feel upset. Some young people even take minimalism too far. Besides cutting extra spending, they might cut back on social activities and spend less time with others. “When a person leads a minimalist life without making friends and going after things they like, it can hurt their emotional resilience,” said Chen Junjie, vice-president of the Yuhuan Psychological Health Association. Without a strong support system, people may feel lonely and miss out on help when facing challenges. This can hold them back from trying new things or dreaming big, hurting their creativity and excitement for life in the process. In short, while minimalism encourages people to live more carefully, taking it too far can make life feel less rich. Young people should try to find a middle ground, living simply while staying active and connected. 1. According to the article, what is a common practice among minimalists? A. Collecting valuable items. B. Keeping just a few close friends. C. Organizing their belongings regularly. D. Seeking new experiences frequently. 2. Why do some minimalists feel stressed, according to the article? A. They aim to do everything perfectly. B. They struggle to afford basic necessities. C. They have trouble making decisions. D. They often compare themselves to others.  3. According to Chen Junjie, how can taking minimalism too far affect young people? A. It can encourage risky behavior. B. It can lead to serious health problems. C. It can weaken their ability to handle emotions. D. It can stop them from expressing themselves. 4. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude toward minimalism? A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Neutral. 阅读理解F In our world, there's so much bad news all the time. Sometimes, we just need something to make us feel better. There are some simple words like "Life is beautiful", "I'm so proud of you", "Relax, keep going. Success is on the other side" and "Be kind for no reason". These words look simple, but actually, they are really important for a new trend on TikTok. It's called "hopecore". India Black, who makes things for hopecore, says it's about making good connections stronger and making us like the world around us more. This trend wants to stop people from always looking at bad news. Black thinks hopecore is not just being happy without a reason. It's about celebrating all the good things, big or small, and believing that good days will come. Hopecore videos usually look and feel the same. Louisa McGillicuddy, who is in charge of TikTok trends, says these videos are like scrapbook slide shows. They have nice words, pictures, drawings, poetry and screenshots. TikTok's photo mode lets people put 35 pictures together to make a warm slideshow. Many of these videos have calm or nice music. Old movie and TV scenes and beautiful views also make people feel good and warm. By the start of 2024, there were about 200,000 hopecore videos on TikTok. And this number is still getting bigger. These videos get a lot of likes and comments. People also save them a lot. This means when people feel sad, they use hopecore videos to feel better. They save these videos like they are saving good feelings for later. Finally, hopecore is a way to deal with the sad side of social media. Black said people are not as close to the real world as before because they look at screens too much. She said hopecore can make people get close to the world again, get hope back and remember there is a beautiful world if they just look around. 1. What is the main purpose of “hopecore” on TikTok? A. To help people feel less lonely. B. To spread bad news. C. To share entertaining and humorous videos. D. To bring more positivity to people’s lives. 2. What elements are commonly found in hopecore videos? A. Cheerful, loud music. B. Scary stories and dark images. C. Images of nature and quotes. D. Scenes of everyday life and work. 3. How to make hopecore videos. D. The role of content creators in TikTok trends. 阅读理解G In a village near a desert lived a young and successful businessman, named James. Despite having a lot, he often felt unhappy due to the endless challenges he faced. One day, a wise old man came to the village with 100 camels. It’s said he could solve any problem. James went to see him and said, “I’m very unhappy with my life. I always have business worries, family troubles and health problems. Please tell me how to make them disappear.” The old man smiled and said, “I’ll give you an answer tomorrow morning. But first, can you do a small thing for me?” James agreed. The old man asked him to take care of the 100 camels for the night, making sure that they all sat down and rested before he could go to sleep. The next morning, the old man asked James how his night went. James said sadly, “I didn’t sleep at all. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get all the camels to sit together. Even if I managed to get some camels to sit on one side, a few others would stand on the other side.”  “That’s true. As noticed last night, some camels sat down on their own, while others required some effort, and yet many camels did not sit even after considerable effort. If you had come back later, you would have seen that some of the camels, even though they didn’t sit at first, eventually sat down on their own,” the old man said. James nodded. The old man continued, “Problems are just like camels – some problems get solved by themselves, some get solved when you put in some effort, and some do not get solved even after you have tried your best. Leave such problems to time. At the right time, these problems themselves will come to an end.” James felt a sense of understanding. It completely changed the way he saw life’s challenges. 1. What troubled James? A. He didn’t have enough to live a better life. B. He felt unhappy about endless problems. C. He didn’t like his wife or other family members. D. He didn’t know how to get away from business.  2. What did the old man ask James to do that night? A. Think about his question carefully.  B. Watch the camels in case they were lost. C. Make all of the camels rest at the same time. D. Make sure the old man could sleep well. 3. How might James have felt that night? A. Excited.        B. Annoyed.  C. Scared.         D. Bored.  4. What method did the old man use to teach James?  A. Explaining the scientific reasons behind problems. B. Giving an example of common people’s lives.  C. Comparing problems to camels sleeping. D. By showing the importance of working hard.  5. What did James learn from it? A. All problems can be solved with effort. B. Problems should be unnoticed until they disappear. C. Problems are like puzzles, endless and challenging. D. Some problems resolve themselves over time. 完形填空 When I was turning thirty years old, a friend asked me to share my biggest 1 in life. A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Neutral. 【答案】BDCA 【解析】特朗普拟提高关税,此举由美公司和消费者承担,还会损害美经济及全球贸易。 1.B 根据 “While Trump claims (声称) foreign countries pay these tariffs, they are actually paid by US companies importing the goods, with the costs often passed on to consumers (消费者).”(虽然特朗普声称外国支付这些关税,但实际上是由进口商品的美国公司支付,成本通常转嫁给消费者)可知,实际上是美国公司和消费者支付特朗普提出的增加的关税。答案是 B。 2.D 根据 “Another often - ignored part is that Trump plans to use tariffs to make up for$7.5 trillion (about 55 trillion yuan) in government revenue (收入) lost from new and permanent tax cuts (永久性减税) over the next 10 years, The Guardian noted.”(《卫报》指出,另一个经常被忽视的部分是,特朗普计划利用关税来弥补未来 10 年新的永久性减税造成的 7.5 万亿美元(约 55 万亿元人民币)的政府收入损失)可知,特朗普提出关税的目的之一是弥补减税造成的政府收入损失。答案是 D。 3.C 根据 “This policy is especially confusing since the top three countries Trump plans to put tariffs on – Canada, Mexico and China – are also the US’ biggest trading partners.”(这项政策尤其令人困惑,因为特朗普计划征收关税的前三个国家 —— 加拿大、墨西哥和中国 —— 也是美国最大的贸易伙伴)可知,对加拿大、墨西哥和中国征收关税对美国经济有害是因为它们是美国的主要贸易伙伴。答案是 C。 4.A 推理判断题。根据 “As Liu Pengyu, spokesperson of the Chinese embassy in the US, put it: ‘No one will win a trade war.’”(正如中国驻美国大使馆发言人刘鹏宇所说:“没有人会在贸易战中获胜。”)可知,刘鹏宇对贸易战持否定态度。答案是 A。 阅读理解C ROOOOAAARRRRR! 【答案】BDADC 【解析】长征12号火箭首飞成功,标志着中国商业航天发射和宽带卫星网络建设的新进展。 1.B 根据第二段 "The Long March 12 is the first Chinese rocket with a diameter (直径) of 3.8 meters. 4.C. A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. 1.
