Marei S.B., 25, got her first taste of her dream career this past summer in Colorado, where she interned (实习) at Woodward, Inc., an American designer, manufacturer, and service provider of control system components for aircraft engines for some of the world’s largest aircraft companies. Marei was part of the platform development engineering team at Woodward, helping train the operations and engineering teams on crucial aircraft components.
“This was my very first internship, and I was amazed by the aerospace industry,” she said. “We were always crunched under deadlines, and customers, understandably, requested large work orders. There was always a pressure to perform your best and provide them with the best possible units made at our plant. This taught me a lot about how demanding and fast-paced the industry is, but it also confirmed and reassured me that I really want to work in the aerospace industry.”
The internship required Marei to use both her technical engineering and interpersonal skills. She worked with both the engineering and operations teams at Woodward. “The operations team didn’t necessarily have engineering degrees, so I had to break down technical terms into everyday words that we use,” she said. “It taught me to be specific and precise. Even if I have to repeat things three or four times, that’s totally fine. I’d rather be more repetitive and ensure each step is correct than have to rework the entire process.”
Marei also helped train the teams through product displays and visual work instructions on how to manufacture specific products. That brought its own unique thrill, as the instructions she created could be used long after her internship ended.
Marei is planning to return to Woodward this winter. She’ll have another semester’s worth of engineering knowledge, which will further her into the career she’s always wanted. “I got to apply many of the things I learned at Harvard,” she said. “The internship taught me the technical knowledge I’d need to learn from my courses that could be applied here.”
4. Who is Marei?
A. An American manufacturer. B. A graduate from Woodward.
C. A long-time worker of Woodward, Inc.. D. An advanced student gaining practical experience.
5. What does the underlined word “crunched” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Extremely busy. B. Desperately frustrated.
C. Really satisfied. D. Especially random.
6. Which words can best describe Marei’s work in Woodward, Inc.?
A. Boring but rewarding. B. Motivating and smooth.
C. Demanding but beneficial. D. Challenging and comfortable.
7. Why will Marei return to Woodward?
A. To hunt for further study in high college. B. To realize the potential in teaching.
C. To better put the knowledge into practice. D. To fulfill the initial dream at the young age.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. C

A few months ago, I was in a cinema queue behind a man whose two sons were asking if they could have Tango Ice Blasts bright blue partly frozen drinks. The father hesitated for a moment. They’d already had too much sugary stuff that day, he said. “But it’s sugar-free,” replied one of the boys. That sealed the deal. The boys walked off happily into the cinema holding their drinks.
In an era when sugar is widely seen as enemy No.1, sugar-free drinks and treats, sweetened with low-calorie additives (添加剂), become well-liked and promise guilt-free sweetness. Some people deliberately choose low-sugar options in the hope of losing weight or managing diabetes; others just enjoy the taste.
But even if you aren’t seeking them out, it’s hard to avoid artificial sweeteners. In 2021, researchers looked at foods for sale in Hong Kong and found that sweeteners were present not just in products where you would expect them, such as sugarless chewing gum, but also in salad dressings, breads, instant noodles and many crisps.
They have become such a common part of our diet that environmental scientists have started looking for traces of them-particularly acesulfame potassium, which passes through the body largely undigested — as a marker for human waste in lakes and rivers.
The rise of sweeteners is, in part, a sign of the spectacular success of sugar taxes, which have been introduced in more than 40 countries since 2010. In the UK, the soft drinks industry tax was announced in 2016 and fully carried out in 2018, as part of a plan to “tackle childhood obesity”. The tax charged manufacturers 24p a litre for any drink with 8g or more of added sugar per 100ml. Almost all the major soft drinks brands in the UK cut the sugar content of their products and replaced the missing sweetness with some kind of artificial alternative. “Original” Coca-Cola and “blue” Pepsi were among the few drinks to keep their recipes the same. Once they became more expensive, compared to the sugar-free alternatives, their sales fell.
8. What made sugar-free drinks and treats popular?
A. The public’s pursuit of health. B. The taste of low-calorie additives.
C. People’s promise to manage diabetes. D. Parents’ expectation of guilt-free sweetness.
9. Why is it hard to avoid artificial sweeteners?
A. Because they are present in every food product.
B. Because they can be found in the environment.
C. Because they are widely used in our diet.
D. Because they are part of a plan to deal with obesity.
10. What did drink manufacturers in the UK do with the sugar tax?
A. Major soft drinks brands reduced their products’ sugar content.
B. Coca-Cola and Pepsi refused to change their recipes.
C. Nearly all big soft drinks brands turned to artificial sweeteners.
D. Drink companies lowered the price to raise their sales.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Sugar, Enemy No.1. B. The Rise of Artificial Sweeteners.
C. The Secret to Health: Low-calorie Additives. D. Scientific Facts Behind Health.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. B

Meat is crucial for feeding the planet, leading scientists have said, as they wanted it is not more environmentally friendly to go vegan (素食).
Prof. Geoff Simm, Director of Global Academy Agriculture and Food Security at the University of Edinburgh, said, “I think livestock (家畜) farmers do feel they are being demonized (妖魔化).” Often the argument is made that going vegan would minimize land use, but the modelling studies demonstrate that’s not the case. We feel that while livestock production has a range of economic, social and environmental costs, the costs have perhaps been receiving far more attention recently than some of the benefits. Meat has massive social benefits. It’s an important source of dietary protein, energy, highly bio-available micronutrient. Even small amounts of animal-sourced food have a really important effect on the cognitive and physical development of children.
Prof. Mike Coffey, from Scotland’s Rural College, added, “It’s completely unnecessary to go vegan. If everybody went vegan, it would be devastating for the UK environment. Animals bred for food help boost biodiversity.”
Researchers are currently attempting to breed more environmentally friendly cattle growing faster and eating less, which could further reduce the sector’s carbon footprint by reducing the amount of methane (甲烷) released by cows. Prof. Coffey said the next stage will be trying to measure the methane given off by different breeds of cattle to find which are the lowest emitters. Soon shoppers could be able to check meat labels to find out how much environmental impact their food has had. He added, “My expectation is that at some point in the near future there will be product labels that relates to the efficiency or carbon impact of the food.”
Professor Andrea Wilson, also of Edinburgh University, said more research was needed into the impact of veganism (绝对素食主义). She added, “We know a lot about the livestock sector because people have looked at it. We actually know very little about the vegan sector. The danger is we demonize one and jump too quickly to the other.”
12. Why are livestock farmers being demonized?
A. Because livestock production has huge costs.
B. Because livestock meat contains harmful protein.
C. Because livestock need more land and emit polluting gases.
D. Because livestock meat negatively affect children’s development.
13. What’s the writer’s purpose of mentioning labeling different breeds of cow?
A. To state a fact. B. To make a prediction.
C. To present a solution. D. To explain a phenomenon.
14. What does the underlined word “devastating” mean in paragraph3?
A. Protective. B. Important. C. Contradictory. D. Disastrous.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Going vegan is not greener
B. Consuming meat is harmful
C. Raising cows is environmentally friendly
D. Criticizing livestock farmers is not wise
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了家畜养殖的必要性和素食主义对环境的潜在的负面影响。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Often the argument is made that going vegan would minimize land use, but the modelling studies demonstrate that’s not the case.(人们经常认为,素食会减少土地使用,但模型研究表明,情况并非如此)”以及第四段中“Researchers are currently attempting to breed more environmentally friendly cattle growing faster and eating less, which could further reduce the sector’s carbon footprint by reducing the amount of methane released by cows.(研究人员目前正在尝试培育更环保的牛,它们生长得更快,吃得更少,这可以通过减少牛释放的甲烷量来进一步减少该行业的碳足迹)”可知,畜牧业被妖魔化的原因是因为其被认为需要更多的土地并排放污染气体。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Prof. Coffey said the next stage will be trying to measure the methane given off by different breeds of cattle to find which are the lowest emitters. Soon shoppers could be able to check meat labels to find out how much environmental impact their food has had.(Coffey教授说,下一阶段将尝试测量不同品种的牛排放的甲烷,以找出排放量最低的牛。很快,消费者就可以通过查看肉类标签来了解他们的食物对环境有多大影响)”可推知,作者提到给不同品种的牛贴标签的目的是为了呈现一个解决方案,即让购物者了解他们购买的食物对环境的影响。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“If everybody went vegan, it would be devastating for the UK environment. Animals bred for food help boost biodiversity.(如果每个人都成为素食主义者,那对英国的环境将是devastating。饲养动物作为食物有助于促进生物多样性)”可知,这里的“devastating”指的是如果所有人都成为素食者,对英国环境将会造成严重的负面影响。由此可知,devastating与disastrous“灾难性的”意思相近。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Meat is crucial for feeding the planet, leading scientists have said, as they wanted it is not more environmentally friendly to go vegan (素食).(顶尖科学家表示,肉类对养活地球人至关重要,因为他们希望素食主义者不会更环保)”以及通读全文可知,文章主要说明了科学家们认为吃肉对养活全球人口至关重要,因为素食并非更环保。由此可知,Going vegan is not greener适合作本文标题。故选A。

“If you buy things you do not need, soon you will have to sell things you need.” This is a piece of wise advice from Warren Buffet, arguably one of the greatest financial minds of the 21st century. ____16____ This is true especially in the present economic climate.
While the idea of being frugal(节俭的) has long been a part of Eastern culture, the relatively recent growth of wealth in China as well as the ease of purchasing has led to increased consumerism for many across the country. Yet this increased consumption of goods has been pushing up the prices of certain bare essentials such as housing, transportation and food, which is forcing people to reevaluate their priorities while spending money. ____17____
The internet is flooded with advice on where one can save money as well as good opinions about how they should spend their money. For example, clothes can be bought second-hand, but you should never skip a visit to the dentist. ____18____ In the meanwhile, you should limit those that are fancy but not entirely necessary. Of course, it is still fine to occasionally spend money on a nice vacation, but buying thirty pairs of shoes you will only wear a few times is neither responsible nor sustainable.
Hopefully, we all fully understand at this point that the resources on the earth are indeed limited. ____19____ As a result, the choice (forced or not) to be frugal is not only good for one’s wallet, but also beneficial to the planet in the long run. Have you ever chosen to starve yourself to get a pair of limited-edition sneakers? ____20____
A. A continuous growth model on this planet is by no means sustainable.
B. These words have always not been taken seriously by young people.
C. They are meant to encourage people to buy more stuff than they need.
D. It makes sense to prioritize goods and services that directly affect your health.
E. It is no wonder then that being frugal is once again becoming a dominant trend.
F. Many young people today appear to be taking these words very much to heart.
G. If so, it is high time you started making changes for yourself and for all humanity.

52. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause filled my ears. I had done it. I had really done it.
Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. “Not for a million dollars,” I would have said. But when the time came I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears - and discovered I could do more than I ever gave myself credit (认可) for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
If not for my teacher, Mrs. Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people’s conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.
My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written. “I’ll begin to cast (为……选派角色) everyone tomorrow,” she said. “I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Does anybody want to try?” A few excited hands shot up - mine, of course, was not one of them - and Mrs. Sather smiled. “We’ll talk more about it tomorrow,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs. Sather asked me to go to her:

Paragraph 2: Hearing Mrs. Sather’s words, I realized it was time to make a change.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】续写例文:
When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs. Sather asked me to go to her. With doubt, I came up to her. Giving me a meaningful look, she asked gently, “Why didn’t you raise your hand?” Hanging my head and staring at the ground, I did not know how to respond. Mrs. Sather continued, “I know your inner strength clearly by reading the stories you wrote about. I would love you to give this a try.” I was so shocked that I raised my head, eyes wide open. She smiled heartily. “Just make yourself fully prepared.”
Hearing Mrs. Sather’s words, I realized it was time to make a change. After getting home, I read the play carefully several times, and the figure of Dorothy gradually appeared in my mind. The next day, when Mrs. Sather cast the characters, I lifted up my hand quickly and firmly. After we presented the ideas and lines, she announced that I would be the one to play the lead part. Overwhelmed with joy, I got involved in rehearsal in no time. And the following was what you read in the beginning.

For example clothes can be bought second-hand, but you should never skip a visit to the dentist.
