He was eventually diagnosed at 12 with vitiligo (白癜风). Being a teenager with vitiligo was hard. Sultan, from Watford, England, didn’t know anyone else with it and felt he was rejected by society. Kids can be hurtful — it’s about not understanding. His parents were worried he would be bullied (欺负) at school and always encouraged him to socialise-join sports clubs and do normal kid things, which he was thankful for. By the time Sultan was 17, he had tried various treatments, but nothing made a difference. But at 18, he had his “eureka moment”. When he saw a Canadian fashion model, who has vitiligo, on screen, it helped change his view. “I realised that this is me and I wouldn’t change this for the world,” Sultan recalled. At 21, he signed up to a modelling agency. He has since worked with some well-known brands and has become an ambassador for charity Changing Faces. “I’ve had messages from kids-I really aim to be the person that I never had been for them,” Sultan says. “You’ve got to embrace (拥抱) your difference and not fight it.” He hopes to tell “different” young people that it’s okay to be different. According to National Health Service, a new treatment — ruxolitinib — might soon be available this year if experts confirm it can bring back the original skin color. However, it carries some potentially serious side effects- including lowering your immune system. Everyone should be able to choose whether they want the treatment, but anyone considering this new cream should talk to their doctor first. “Personally, I wouldn’t try it, because my vitiligo is part of who I am,” Sultan says. “I no longer see my vitiligo as something that needs to be cured.” 4. What made Sultan’s teenage life difficult? A. He was often bullied at school. B. He wasn’t cared about by his parents. C. He wasn’t understood by other teenagers. D. He was stopped from doing normal kid things. 5. When did Sultan begin to change his attitude to vitiligo? A. When he became a model. B. When he got a doctor’s guidance. C. When he received a kid’s message. D. When he saw a fashion model on TV. 6. What does Sultan suggest “different” young people do? A. Be thankful to their parents. B. Take part in charity activities. C. Accept their difference bravely. D. Change their difference totally. 7. What can we learn about the new treatment? A. It is harmless to patients. B. Sultan wants to give it a try. C. Doctors strongly disagree with it. D. People need to be careful with it. C Smokey Bear is famous for warning against forest fires, but for most US homeowners, grass fires are actually more of a threat. Forest fires are well known for their violence (猛烈). However, after analyzing the locations of homes within wildfire boundaries (边界) since the 1990s, a new study published in Science found they were responsible for just 33 percent of houses destroyed by wildfires in the early 2000s. In contrast, 64 percent of such houses were destroyed by grassland fires. This is because even though forest fires are more destructive to buildings and the number of forest fires has increased, much more buildings burned by wildfires were built in grasslands, the researchers found. There are twice as many homes within wildfire boundaries today as there were 30 years ago, according to the study. Two factors have resulted in the situation. Fifty-three percent of this effect could be explained by an increasing amount of the burned areas: wildfires are more common and violent than they used to be. The other forty-seven percent was caused by the increased expansion of homes into what experts call the wildland urban (城市的) interface (WUI),where houses are against natural areas. Homeowners in forested areas are often relatively well aware of their fire risk, says Sarah Anderson, a professor of environmental politics at the University of California Santa Barbara. But people living in a grassy space may not realize the danger. “This paper probably implies we need to do a lot more public education,” Anderson says. There are ways to augment the survival rate, says Yana Valachovic, forest adviser and county director at the University of California Cooperative Extension. For example, homeowners can protect themselves by blocking vent openings so that fire can’t land in eaves, pulling plants and wood coverings away from ground and using metal fences to replace wood ones. 8. Why did grassland fires destroy more houses than forest fires? A. There were less and less forest fires. B. More burnt houses were in grasslands. C. Forest fires were less destructive to houses. D. The houses in grasslands were of lower quality. 9 What may cause increased homes in wildfire boundaries according to the text? A. Reduced urban areas. B. Less houses into WUI. C. More violent wildfires. D. Increased love for nature. 10. What need homeowners in grasslands do according to Anderson? A. Warn themselves of forest fires. B. Move their houses to forested areas. C. Increase their awareness of fire risk. D. Reduce the destruction of grasslands. 11. What does the underlined word “augment” mean in the last paragraph? A. Test. B. Control. C. Compare. D. Increase. D Imagine this: on a horizontal line, one thousand is marked on the very left and one billion on the very right. Where would you add a marker to represent one million? If you said somewhere in the middle, you answered the same as the roughly 50 percent of people who have done this exercise in a study. But the answer is actually much closer to one thousand. “This error makes sense because our human brains are pretty bad at comprehending (理解) big numbers.” says Elizabeth Toomarian, an educational neuroscientist at Stanford University. “This is because our brains are not actually intended to be doing these really precise, exact calculations (计算),” says Toomarian. “Instead, our brains are designed to help us understand generally how many of something is in our environment. For example, which bush has more berries or how many predators are in that open space?” So what can we do about the struggle to understand big numbers? Toomarian suggests bringing big numbers down to a more comprehensible degree and ideally making them relevant (相关的) to something in our daily lives. For example, she suggests using a “cosmic calendar”, where the Big Bang occurred at 12 am on January 1st,dinosaurs were only present for roughly the last week of the year, and humans only showed up in the last eight seconds: at 12:59:52 pm on December 31st. This makes it clear that dinosaurs are much closer to humans than the Big Bang. Numbers are part of our everyday lives. So, whether it’s understanding the seriousness of certain challenges we face, like climate change, or understanding how close or far we are from certain kinds of outcomes, numbers are really vital. They even play a part in our understanding of the impact of different policy decisions on things like budget and tax, and they involve ratios, percentages and estimations, really big numbers and smaller numbers. 12. Why do many people make the mistake in paragraph 1? A. They fail to make sense of the question. B. They are too careless when doing the exercise. C. Humans have trouble understanding big numbers. D. Humans easily get nervous when dealing with numbers. 13. What’s paragraph 2 mainly about? A. How we can understand big numbers. B. How our brains work with calculations. C. Why our brains are poor at big numbers. D. Why environment can influence our brains. 14. What can we do to understand big numbers according to Toomarian? A. Make use of calculators. B. Count them more carefully. C. Try to exercise our brains actively. D. Turn them into smaller ones. 15. What does the author want to stress in the last paragraph? A. Numbers are important in our life. B. Numbers are difficult to understand. C. It is necessary for people to reduce budget. D. It is challenging to deal with climate change When we walk the “path of life”, social life is very important. Hannah was an adventurous spirit with an imagination far beyond her time. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the woods looking for new things. She loved to create stories in her head and used to imagine herself as one of her characters. Sometimes, she even told stories to her friends, adding her own touch of curiosity every now and then to different stories, making them more interesting. She wanted to inspire the sparks of curiosity and imagination in them. One afternoon, when Hannah was on one of her adventurous searches, she came upon an abandoned cottage(遗弃的小屋). C 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第二段“Being a teenager with vitiligo was hard. Sultan, from Watford, England, didn’t know anyone else with it and felt he was rejected by society. Kids can be hurtful — it’s about not understanding.(作为一个患有白癜风的青少年是很艰难的。苏尔坦来自英格兰沃特福德,他不认识其他患有这种疾病的人,他觉得自己被社会所排斥。孩子可能会伤人——这是因为他们不理解)”可知,周围同龄人对Sultan的不理解使Sultan的青少年时光很艰难。故选C。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“But at 18, he had his “eureka moment”. When he saw a Canadian fashion model, who has vitiligo, on screen, it helped change his view. “I realised that this is me and I wouldn’t change this for the world,” Sultan recalled.(但在18岁时,他有了“顿悟时刻”。当他在屏幕上看到一位患有白癜风的加拿大时装模特时,他改变了自己的看法。苏尔坦回忆说:“我意识到这就是我,我不会为世界改变这一点。”)”可知, 在一个加拿大时尚模特的影响下,Sultan开始改变对自己的疾病的看法。故选D。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段““You’ve got to embrace (拥抱) your difference and not fight it.” He hopes to tell “different” young people that it’s okay to be different.(“你必须拥抱你的差异,而不是与之抗争。”他希望告诉“与众不同”的年轻人,与众不同没什么大不了的)”可知,Sultan建议那些“不同的”年轻人勇敢地接受自己的不同。故选C。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“However, it carries some potentially serious side effects- including lowering your immune system. Everyone should be able to choose whether they want the treatment, but anyone considering this new cream should talk to their doctor first.(然而,它有一些潜在的严重副作用——包括降低你的免疫系统。每个人都应该能够选择他们是否想要这种治疗,但是任何考虑这种新药霜的人都应该先和他们的医生谈谈)”可知,人们在使用这种新疗法时需要谨慎。故选D。 C Smokey Bear is famous for warning against forest fires, but for most US homeowners, grass fires are actually more of a threat. A. Test. B. Control. C. Compare. D. Increase. B 9. C 10. C 11. 根据文章第二段“In contrast, 64 percent of such houses were destroyed by grassland fires. This is because even though forest fires are more destructive to buildings and the number of forest fires has increased, much more buildings burned by wildfires were built in grasslands, the researchers found.(相比之下,64%的房屋是由草地火灾摧毁的。 根据文章第三段“There are twice as many homes within wildfire boundaries today as there were 30 years ago, according to the study. Two factors have resulted in the situation. Fifty-three percent of this effect could be explained by an increasing amount of the burned areas: wildfires are more common and violent than they used to be. (根据该研究,如今位于野火边界内的房屋数量是30年前的两倍。这种情况是由两个因素造成的。其中53%的影响可归因于燃烧区域的增加:野火比过去更为常见和猛烈)”可知,有两个因素导致野火边界内的房屋数量增加。其中一个因素是燃烧区域的增加,即野火比以前更加常见和猛烈。因此,更多猛烈的野火可能是导致野火边界内房屋数量增加的原因之一。故选C。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“But people living in a grassy space may not realize the danger. “This paper probably implies we need to do a lot more public education,” Anderson says.(但生活在草地空间的人们可能没有意识到这种危险。“这篇论文可能意味着我们需要做更多的公众教育工作,”Anderson说)”可知,Anderson认为草地房主需要提高他们的火灾风险意识。故选C。 【11题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在句“There are ways to augment the survival rate(有一些方法可以_____生存率)”以及下文所举例子“For example, homeowners can protect themselves by blocking vent openings so that fire can’t land in eaves, pulling plants and wood coverings away from ground and using metal fences to replace wood ones.(例如,房主可以通过堵住通风口来防止火焰落入屋檐,将植物和木质覆盖物从地面移开,并用金属栅栏取代木质栅栏来保护自己)”可推测,下文所举例子指的教房主如何保护自己;由此可推测,划线单词指的是“提高”生存率。选项D“increase(增加、提高)”与此相符。故选D。 D Imagine this: on a horizontal line, one thousand is marked on the very left and one billion on the very right. D. It is challenging to deal with climate change 【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. 根据文章第一段““This error makes sense because our human brains are pretty bad at comprehending (理解) big numbers.” says Elizabeth Toomarian, an educational neuroscientist at Stanford University.(“这个错误是合理,因为我们人类的大脑在理解大数字方面相当糟糕。”斯坦福大学的教育神经科学家Elizabeth Toomarian说)”可知,人们犯错是因为大脑在理解大数字方面很糟糕。故选C。 【13题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第二段““This is because our brains are not actually intended to be doing these really precise, exact calculations (计算),” says Toomarian. “Instead, our brains are designed to help us understand generally how many of something is in our environment. For example, which bush has more berries or how many predators are in that open space?”(“这是因为我们的大脑实际上并不是为了进行这些非常精确、准确的计算而设计的,”Toomarian说,“相反,我们的大脑被设计成帮助我们大致理解我们周围环境中某物的数量。例如,哪丛灌木上的浆果更多,或者那片开阔地带里有多少捕食者?”)”可知,第二段主要讲述了为什么我们的大脑不擅长处理大数字,即我们的大脑并不是为了进行精确的计算而设计的,而是帮助我们理解周围环境中某物的数量。故选C。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Toomarian suggests bringing big numbers down to a more comprehensible degree and ideally making them relevant (相关的) to something in our daily lives.( Toomarian建议将大数字降低到更容易理解的程度,并尽可能使它们与我们的日常生活相关)”可知,Toomarian建议将大数字降低到更容易理解的程度,即把它们变成更小的数字来理解。 根据文章最后一段“Numbers are part of our everyday lives. So, whether it’s understanding the seriousness of certain challenges we face, like climate change, or understanding how close or far we are from certain kinds of outcomes, numbers are really vital. They even play a part in our understanding of the impact of different policy decisions on things like budget and tax, and they involve ratios, percentages and estimations, really big numbers and smaller numbers.(数字是我们日常生活的一部分。 故选A。 When we walk the “path of life”, social life is very important. The village was located in the heart of a big jungle(丛林). Surrounded by the high mountains and in the shade of green trees, the villagers happily lived a life of happiness. All of them were used to their robotic daily tasks and none of them had the imagination or the will to try something new, except for one girl named Hannah. Very few people in the village could read, let alone write, and Hannah was one of them. Her parents had made sure that their only child got everything possible. The cottage looked very old in its condition. The door was hardly hanging and the wood was about to break apart into pieces. Even though Hannah’s mother had strictly warned her not to go wandering in abandoned places, her curiosity drove her to approach it. Opening the door, she was left shocked by a room full of books! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To her disappointment, her friends showed no interest in the tales she told. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Opening the door, she was left shocked by a room full of books! Shinning in the dust, books were bathed in the warm sunlight just waiting to be explored. Seeing them, Hannah jumped up and down with excitement! She dusted the books, the shelves, and what was left of the furniture. Finally came the moment when she could appreciate the books, which were filled with stories about different creatures. So interesting and encouraging were they that Hannah was immersed in them completely. Meanwhile, she couldn’t wait to share the tales she read with her friends. To her disappointment, her friends showed no interest to the tales she told. She knew it would be a difficult journey, but she wouldn’t give it up. To inspire their curiosity and imagination, she started telling tales every day at the cottage. She added her own touch of curiosity now and then to different stories, making them more interesting. Soon, the word of Hannah’s storytelling spread rapidly and more people came, gathering around Hannah in admiration and listening attentively. She even conducted workshops to teach villagers how to read and write. Sharing your skill will not only help yourself, but also be a ray of hope for someone struggling to find their way.
