Write a poem using 100 words or fewer”可知,所写的诗字数不能超过100字。 B。 Wendell Berry was almost 30 when he packed up his life as a New York scholar and moved to Port Royal, a tiny community in Kentucky where generations of his forebears (祖先) had farmed the land. His friends thought he was mad. But he felt it was his inner calling to record the history of the place. Since moving to Port Royal in 1964, he has lived as if he were in the 19th century, writing by hand and ploughing his fields with horses. His eight novels and more than 50 short stories are usually set in Port William, a stand-in (代替物) for Port Royal. Nick Offerman, an actor, wanted to adapt his work for the screen. However, the actor was refused. In Mr. Berry’s opinion, humans must take care of the earth that grants them life. “The soil is the greatest connector of lives,” he has written. “Without proper care for it we can have no community.” This philosophy dominates his writings. In The Unsettling of America, published in 1977, Mr. Berry criticized the natural damage caused by large agribusinesses. He thinks capitalism has separated farming from culture and disconnected people from nature. Mr. Berry’s fiction explores the decline of values by following Port William’s interconnected clans (家族) as they enter the modern age. In Dismemberment, a short story, Andy Catlett loses a hand to a harvesting machine and becomes a loner. He sees his withdrawal is mistaken and reconnects with the town, finding “the wealth of an intimate history” in belonging to “his ancestral place”. In Hannah Coulter, Mr. Berry’s seventh novel, the main character Hannah Coulter grows old after a sad life and anticipates loneliness when her children leave to find work in the city. Instead, her hope is restored when her grandson returns to run the farm. These stories offer insightful advice for readers living through ecological disaster. Though few can return to farming basics, Mr. Berry’s messages of building communities, being a good neighbor and resisting the invitation of modern life are still valuable. 4. What did Wendell Berry’s friends think of his decision to move to Port Royal? A. They thought he was crazy. B. They supported his decision. C. They thought it was a wise move. D. They were indifferent to his choice. 5. What do Mr. Berry’s writings often imply? A. The challenges of farming in old days. B. The harmony between man and nature. C. The real benefits of large agribusinesses. D. The hard lives of his forebears in Kentucky. 6. What do Andy Catlett and Hannah Coulter have in common? A. They are from the same novel. B. They both choose to live alone. C. They are victims of country life. D. They both find their values again. 7. What kind of life may suit Mr. Berry’s taste best? A. Rural life with modern facilities. B. Urban life in old-fashioned ways. C. Rural life with poor equipment. D. Rural life with distant connections. A 5. B 6. D 7. 根据第一段“His friends thought he was mad.(他的朋友们认为他疯了。)” 故选A项。 根据第三段“In The Unsettling of America, published in 1977, Mr. Berry criticized the natural damage caused by large agribusinesses. He thinks capitalism has separated farming from culture and disconnected people from nature.(在1977年出版的《美国的不安》中,贝里批评了大型农业综合企业造成的自然破坏。 根据倒数第二段“In Dismemberment, a short story, Andy Catlett loses a hand to a harvesting machine and becomes a loner. He sees his withdrawal is mistaken and reconnects with the town, finding ‘the wealth of an intimate history’ in belonging to ‘his ancestral place’. In Hannah Coulter, Mr. Berry’s seventh novel, the main character Hannah Coulter grows old after a sad life and anticipates loneliness when her children leave to find work in the city. Instead, her hope is restored when her grandson returns to run the farm.(在短篇小说《残缺》中,安迪·卡特利特失去了一只手,变成了一个孤独的人。 通读全文尤其是第二段“Since moving to Port Royal in 1964, he has lived as if he were in the 19th century, writing by hand and ploughing his fields with horses.(自1964年搬到皇家港以来,他一直过着19世纪的生活,用手写字,用马犁地。)” I know people who say they don’t watch television, and I always nod and agree. Reading requires intelligence, and television is merely entertainment, right? I’m going to Scotland this year, and three different people told me I must watch “Outlander” before I go, which is like “Game of Thrones” for fans of romance novels. I watched the first four-hour-long episodes back to back. When I stood up from the couch I felt sick, and it wasn’t just the cookies, popcorn and peanut butter sandwiches I’d had without noticing. It was dark outside, and I felt ashamed. I had spent half a day on the couch. Research for Scotland? Not exactly. A few days later I had a library book due: The National Book Award winner The Friend, by Sigrid Nunez. I needed to finish it, so I read the last half straight through. I was absorbed in Nunez’s New York City, worrying about the heroine’s career and her future. I finished the book with tears in my eyes and stood up feeling, well, great. I had wasted another four hours on my couch. I hadn’t eaten as much junk food because I needed my hands free — and not sticky — so I could turn pages and return the book to the library relatively clean, but I hadn’t moved and once again it was dark outside. Why did I feel so much better and guilt-free? All the research says reading a book is good for you. It reduces stress, promotes comprehension and imagination, relieves depression, helps you sleep and may contribute to preventing Alzheimer’s The act of physically turning a page creates a momentary pause for understanding to sink in. Our brains have to work to translate the black squiggles (弯弯曲曲的线条) on the page into words and then interpret the meaning and intent (意图) of those words. When a character is described as tall with brown hair, a reader creates her own picture. TV takes all that imagination away. But there’s a lot of good TV now. I’d like to say the answer to TV versus books must be, as Aristotle said, “Moderation in all things,” though he never had a television or a computer and had to read his scrolls by candlelight. I agree that too much television is bad for you. I know I feel better if I read, but it won’t stop me from watching too: My second DVD of “Outlander” has just arrived, and as soon as I get this essay done, the rest of my day is free. 8. By “I always nod and agree” (paragraph 1), the author implies that ______ . A. she doesn’t think highly of TV either B. she believes those who say they don’t watch TV C. she should be polite to get the conversation to go on D. she is not willing to admit that she watches television 9. The phrase “back to back” (paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to “ ______ ”. A. from morning till night B. one after another without a break C. looking at the opposite direction D. leaning against the back of the couch 10. The author felt better after reading The Friend than watching “Outlander”, most probably because ______ . A. she didn’t feel hungry for any snacks B. the TV series got her to cancel her trip to Scotland C. the television series was no more attractive than the book D. she regarded reading as more rewarding than watching TV 11. What can be concluded from all the research introduced in paragraph 5? A. Reading is active while watching TV is passive. B. Reading involves physical exercises while watching TV doesn’t. C. Reading stimulates the brain to concentrate while watching TV doesn’t. D. Reading is good for one’s mental health while watching TV is bad for it. A 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第一段中“I know people who say they don’t watch television, and I always nod and agree. Reading requires intelligence, and television is merely entertainment, right?(我知道有些人说他们不看电视,我总是点头表示同意。 故选A。 根据第二段中“I watched the first four-hour-long episodes back to back. When I stood up from the couch I felt sick, and it wasn’t just the cookies, popcorn and peanut butter sandwiches I’d had without noticing. It was dark outside, and I felt ashamed.(我back to back看了第一集四小时长的剧集。 B“one after another without a break (一个接一个不间断)”一致。 根据第四段中“Why did I feel so much better and guilt-free? 根据第五段中“Our brains have to work to translate the black squiggles (弯弯曲曲的线条) on the page into words and then interpret the meaning and intent (意图) of those words. When a character is described as tall with brown hair, a reader creates her own picture. TV takes all that imagination away.(我们的大脑必须努力将页面上的黑色曲线翻译成单词,然后解释这些单词的含义和意图。 A。 A new study has found human feelings can accurately be expressed numerically and have more predictive power for how we behave than formal studies of socioeconomic factors like household income and employment status. The study co-author Andrew Oswald, a professor of economics and behavioral science gathered information from nearly 700,000 people, who were asked annually over a three-decade period how they felt on a numerical scale about their job, spouse, health and home. Using the data collected, researchers constructed statistical models to show how people felt and the actions they took as a result of their reported feelings. The study found that ratings of life satisfaction had a direct linear (线性的) relationship to actions people subsequently take. Participants who rated their job satisfaction as a 2 out of 7 had a 25% probability of quitting their job. Those who rated a 6 out of 7 had only a 10 percent probability of quitting. The same was true across other measures like marriage, health and housing. Previous research has also shown data about feelings predict human outcomes, but not in such a linear fashion; the degree of satisfaction served as a good predictor of future actions. Additionally, economists have previously been critical of feelings data because they considered them unscientific and unreliable. But this study shows socioeconomic factors have a lesser probability of predicting human behavior than data on feelings. Though the study shows numbers can quantify feelings, researchers are still a bit confused as to why estimates of seemingly subjective feelings can be such good predictors of future actions. According to Oswald, a number of factors could be at play. Humans are very experienced in comparative thinking and are able to scale their own life satisfaction against that of their neighbors. We’re also accustomed to using measuring devices for other aspects of life like temperature, distance and weight, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that we’re able to measure our feelings in a similarly accurate way. Another study co-author Caspar Kaiser says that it may also be because we communicate our feelings and do it in a scaled fashion every day. This could be why it comes out in the data more accurately than in objective markers. Ori Heffetz, an economics professor who was not involved in the study, says that this research shows feelings data shouldn’t be underestimated even if they’re more difficult to study. “Scientists who ignore this do so at their own risk,” he says. Looking ahead, Kaiser hopes this same data can be studied in lower-income countries so that it can be applied universally to places with varied levels of economic development. But more than anything else he’s interested in studying why feelings work so well. 12. Paragraph 2 is mainly about . A. research process and findings B. research topic and significance C. research subjects and purpose D. research data collection and analysis 13. What can we know about the study? A. It also applies to people from lower-income countries. B. It challenges the opinion that feelings data are unreliable. C. It explains why ratings of feelings can foresee future actions. D. It first shows data about feelings can predict human behavior 14. What is Ori’s attitude towards the study? A. Neutral. B. Skeptical. C. Supportive. D. Cautious. 15. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. How You Rate Your Life Predicts Your Future Behavior B. Feelings Forecast Actions Better than Economic Factors C. Why Your Feelings Affect Your Future Actions D. Ranking Every Aspect of Your Life Counts 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. 根据第二段“The study co-author Andrew Oswald, a professor of economics and behavioral science gathered information from nearly 700,000 people, who were asked annually over a three-decade period how they felt on a numerical scale about their job, spouse, health and home. Using the data collected, researchers constructed statistical models to show how people felt and the actions they took as a result of their reported feelings. Participants who rated their job satisfaction as a 2 out of 7 had a 25% probability of quitting their job. Those who rated a 6 out of 7 had only a 10 percent probability of quitting. The same was true across other measures like marriage, health and housing.”(这项研究的合著者,经济学和行为科学教授安德鲁 · 奥斯瓦尔德(Andrew Oswald)收集了近70万人的信息。 故选A。 根据第三段“Previous research has also shown data about feelings predict human outcomes, but not in such a linear fashion; the degree of satisfaction served as a good predictor of future actions. Additionally, economists have previously been critical of feelings data because they considered them unscientific and unreliable. But this study shows socioeconomic factors have a lesser probability of predicting human behavior than data on feelings.”(先前的研究也表明,关于情感的数据可以预测人类的结果,但不是以这样的线性方式;满意度可以很好地预测未来的行动。 根据倒数第二段“Ori Heffetz, an economics professor who was not involved in the study, says that this research shows feelings data shouldn’t be underestimated even if they’re more difficult to study. “Scientists who ignore this do so at their own risk,” he says.”(没有参与这项研究的经济学教授 Ori Heffetz 说,这项研究表明,即使感觉数据更难研究,也不应该被低估。 通读全文,并结合第二段的研究发现“The study found that ratings of life satisfaction had a direct linear (线性的) relationship to actions people subsequently take. Participants who rated their job satisfaction as a 2 out of 7 had a 25% probability of quitting their job. Those who rated a 6 out of 7 had only a 10 percent probability of quitting. You’re instead whoever you are in that context. For example, if you are a mother spending time with your children, you’re a parent in that situation. If you’re hanging out with coworkers, you’re a fellow employee. When you’re by yourself, you’re just you. This gives you an opportunity to learn how the various social contexts of your life shape your behavior and self perception(察觉). ___16___. Helping with self-regulation It’s worth noting that spending time alone doesn’t have to have a harmful impact on your social life. ___17___. This is because spending time in solitude helps people develop the skills they need to regulate their own emotions. When you’re alone with your thoughts and feelings, you’re more aware of them. That means you have more opportunities to exercise a degree of control over how you think or feel about particular situations. This helps afterwards. ___18___, your self-regulation skills will help you determine if you’re talking too much or not enough, overreacting to perceived slights, making insensitive comments, and much more. ___19___ Some of the greatest benefits of solitude are practical in nature. For instance, researchers have often found that, all other factors(因素)being equal, people who spend time alone are often more likely to develop certain strong talents than their peers. These talents can include playing an instrument, painting, cooking, or doing anything else that requires practice. It’s easy to understand why this is the case. ___20___, there are also many abilities that a person is more likely to develop when they have the opportunity to devote alone time to them. A. Developing skills B. Spending time on interests C. That can help you make life changes D. When you’re socializing with\others later on E. While people shouldn’t spend all their time with others F. Although some skills are easier to develop with help from others G. On the contrary, it can actually improve your social interactions over time 【答案】16. C 17. G 18. D 19. A 20. 【16题详解】 设空处位于段末,往往具有总结前文的特征;上文“This gives you an opportunity to learn how the various social contexts of your life shape your behavior and self perception(察觉).(这让你有机会了解生活中的各种社会背景是如何塑造你的行为和自我认知的)”提到了让你有计划了解生活中的各种社会背景是如何塑造你的行为和自我认知的。C项“That can help you make life changes(这可以帮助你改变生活)”指出了解生活中的各种社会背景是如何塑造你的行为和自我认知的好处,其中的that恰好指代前面的“learn how the various social contexts of your life shape your behavior and self perception”,与上文对应。故选C项。 【17题详解】 上文“It’s worth noting that spending time alone doesn’t have to have a harmful impact on your social life.(值得注意的是,独处并不一定会对你的社交生活产生有害的影响)”提到了独处并不一定对社交生活产生有害的影响;下文“This is because spending time in solitude helps people develop the skills they need to regulate their own emotions.(这是因为花时间独处有助于人们培养调节自己情绪所需的技能)”提到了花时间独处有助于人们培养调节自己情绪所需的技能,是在论述独处的好处。由此可推知,设空处与上文和下文间应为承上启下的关系,G项“On the contrary, it can actually improve your social interactions over time(相反,随着时间的推移,它实际上可以改善你的社交互动)”中的it指代前面的spending time alone,与上下文呼应。 上文“When you’re alone with your thoughts and feelings, you’re more aware of them. That means you have more opportunities to exercise a degree of control over how you think or feel about particular situations. 【19题详解】 设空处为小标题,应具有简短、概括性强等特点;下文“Some of the greatest benefits of solitude are practical in nature. For instance, researchers have often found that, all other factors (因素) being equal, people who spend time alone are often more likely to develop certain strong talents than their peers. These talents can include playing an instrument, painting, cooking, or doing anything else that requires practice. Alondra said, “When I was young, I failed to attend the school’s prom for some reason!” Rose could see that Alondra had dreamed about attending a prom. After returning home, Rose encouraged Mike to ask his grandma to be his dance partner. She wanted to help Alondra to realize her dream. She knew Alondra was outgoing and loved to stay with young kids. Mike initially hesitated but finally decided to follow his mother’s suggestion. His good friend Lily supported his decision, too. The next day, Mike sent the invitation to his grandma. Seeing it, Alondra was surprised and excited. When that big night came, Alondra wore a beautiful dress. When they joyfully walked into the hall of the prom, unexpectedly, there was a loud gasp (倒抽气). Mike could feel all eyes on him. “Wait! Did he bring his old grandmother as his dance partner?” some kids behind them laughed. Mike looked around, finding that every boy had a young girl as their partner. Upset and embarrassed, he whispered, “I’m sorry, Gran. Don’t hate me for this.” Without a second thought, he left his grandmother behind and walked out of the hall, vowing not to return to the prom. Poor Alondra was left alone in the hall. She had never imagined she’d be alone in a hall full of young children. But it happened. Mike sat on the basketball court stairs, thinking about how terrible it was to bring Alondra along. When he returned with Lily, he instantly spotted Grandma in the crowd, who cast a broad smile at him. Ashamed but determined, Mike walked up firmly towards Alondra. Holding her hands, Mike cried, “Gran, sorry! Thanks for being my dance partner.” “All right,” Alondra grinned at him. “I’m so glad you’re back.” Then, the two moved slowly to music together with other dancers, immersing themselves in the beautiful melody. The other kids watched their elegant movement with great admiration. That night, both of them enjoyed the sweet night, their heart overflowing with great joy. After the prom came to an end, Alondra whispered to Mike on their way back, “It is one of the best days of my life.” A surge of pride welling up in Mike’s heart, he was delighted he made the right decision. 词汇激活 行为类 ①抬头:raise one’s head/lift one’s head/pick up one’s head ②实现某人的理想:fulfill one’s dream/realize one’s dream ③沉浸于:immerse oneself in/absorb oneself in 情绪类 ①羞愧:ashamed / guilty ②高兴的:glad/delighted/joyful 【点睛】[高分句型1] When he returned with Lily, he instantly spotted Grandma in the crowd, who cast a broad smile at him.(运用了when引导的时间状语从句和who引导的非限制性定语从句) [高分句型2] That night, both of them enjoyed the sweet night, their heart overflowing with great joy.(运用了独立主格结构) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2023级高二年级上学期第二次月考英语试题 用时:120分钟 满分:150分 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第二部分第一节(共5小题:每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1. Wendell Berry was almost 30 when he packed up his life as a New York scholar and moved to Port Royal, a tiny community in Kentucky where generations of his forebears (祖先) had farmed the land. I know people who say they don’t watch television, and I always nod and agree. It reduces stress, promotes comprehension and imagination, relieves depression, helps you sleep and may contribute to preventing Alzheimer’s (阿尔兹海默症). The act of physically turning a page creates a momentary pause for understanding to sink in. A new study has found human feelings can accurately be expressed numerically and have more predictive power for how we behave than formal studies of socioeconomic factors like household income and employment status. During it, they talked about the school’s approaching prom (舞会). Suddenly, a familiar voice from behind distracted his racing thoughts. “Your grandmother needs you,” it said. “It was very rude of you to leave her alone!” Lily approached him, encouraging him to be back with his grandma. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Lily sat down on the stairs next to him. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Holding her hands, Mike cried, “Gran, sorry!
