Here are four books we recommend that you take on your trip. Destination: Kenya, Africa Recommended book: West with the Night, by Beryl Markham This book is about a direct, stylish and engrossing story of a marvelous life. Markham described her childhood in Kenya and her experiences as a bush pilot in the 1930s — evoking the landscape, people, and wildlife in rich detail. Destination: Central Europe Recommended book: Life is Elsewhere, by Milan Kundera Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said, “Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.” The book describes a young artist’s romantic but miserable life, about how he reads, dreams and has a relationship. The book invites you to deeply reflect on your current life. Destination: Provence, France Recommended book: A Year in Provence, by Peter Mayle Provence, well-known for its lavender (薰衣草), is not only a tourist attraction, but more a symbol of a lifestyle. The book doesn’t teach you how to deal with the hardships in life, but to avoid them happily. With a cup of wine and a rocking chair, time flows slowly here. Destination: Istanbul, Türkiye Recommended book: My Name is Red, by Orhan Pamuk The book has been translated into more than 50 languages and published around the world. It tells a story of a young man, who has been away from home for 12 years, came back to his hometown in Istanbul. What embraces him is not only love, but a series of murder cases as well. The book inspires people to have a deeper thinking on life. 1. What can be learned about West with the Night? A. It is based on a true story. B. It is set in Istanbul. C. It deals with chains in life. D. It stresses harmony. 2. Which book is recommended if you want to explore Central Europe? A. West with the Night. B. Life is Elsewhere. C. A Year in Provence. D. My Name is Red. 3. What’s the theme of A Year in Provence? A. Love. B. Hardships. C. Leisurely life. D. Professional life. A 2. B 3. 根据第二段“Markham described her childhood in Kenya and her experiences as a bush pilot in the 1930s — evoking the landscape, people, and wildlife in rich detail.(马卡姆描述了她在肯尼亚的童年和她在20世纪30年代作为丛林飞行员的经历——以丰富的细节唤起了那里的风景、人和野生动物)”以及书的作者是Beryl Markham,可知,West with the Night是根据真实故事改编的。故选A。 根据“Destination: Central Europe(目的地:中欧)”以及“Recommended book: Life is Elsewhere, by Milan Kundera (推荐书目:米兰·昆德拉的《别处在生活》)”可知,如果你想探索中欧,推荐Life is Elsewhere。 根据倒数第二段“The book doesn’t teach you how to deal with the hardships in life, but to avoid them happily. With a cup of wine and a rocking chair, time flows slowly here.(这本书没有教你如何处理生活中的困难,而是教你如何愉快地避免它们。一杯酒,一把摇椅,时光在这里慢慢流逝)”可知,《普罗旺斯的一年》的主题是悠闲的生活。故选C。 B Visitors to the Yangguan Museum in Dunhuang, Northwest China’s Gansu Province, have the opportunity to see the first restored Mingguang armor (铠甲) from the Tang Dynasty. The 1.86-meter tall suit of armor gave visitors a window through which they could appreciate the wisdom of ancient Chinese artisans and the charm of China’s armor culture. Wen Chenhua, the artisan who restored the armor that played a significant role in the battlefield more than 1,000 years ago, is one of the biggest fans of ancient armor in China. Following his passion, he has made the restoration of armor his lifelong career. Since 2008, Wen and his team of over 30 people have produced more than 10,000 armor replicas according to ancient samples, gradually gathering thousands of followers from around the world who have been caught up by the charm of Chinese armor culture. Armor from the Tang and Song Dynasties are Wen’s favorites. He pointed to the Mingguang armor as a specific example. Mingguang means “bright and shiny” and in this case refers specifically to glittering nature of the breastplate of the armor, according to Wen. “Which one is the most difficult to be restored for me? I have to say none is easy to be restored,” Wen said. Due to prohibitions against privately storing suits of armor in ancient times, there are very few complete suits of armor that have been well preserved in China and detailed written records remain scarce. Although Wen found many mentions of ancient armor in historical records, most records did not discuss what the armor actually looked like. Wen also used the statues of goddesses in the Mogao Grottoes as references, as the armor on one of these statues still had colour. It took Wen and his team several months to restore the Mingguang armor. It is composed of more than 1,300 iron pieces and weighs nearly 25 kilograms in total. They used modern technology to create patterns that were inspired by a traditional forging technique (锻造技术) popular in the region during the Tang Dynasty. Wen said that all of these efforts are aimed at getting as close as possible to historical reality, noting that “no one can see the real Mingguang armor but I will try my best to restore the truth”. 4 What inspired Wen Chenhua to restore the armor? A. Visitors' encouragement. B. The charm of Chinese tradition. C. The wisdom of ancient Chinese artisans. D. His enthusiasm for ancient Chinese armor. 5 Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “replicas” in paragraph 3? A. Styles. B. Displays. C. Copies. D. Statues. 6. Why was it difficult to restore the armor? A. There is a shortage of professional restorers. B. There was few information about patterns of it. C. The colour of the armor was completely destroyed. D. The ancient government banned storing suits of armor privately. 7. What can best describe Wen and his team? A. Iron men. B. War heroes. C. Light explorers. D. Museum magicians. D 5. C 6. B 7. 根据第二段的“Wen Chenhua, the artisan who restored the armor that played a significant role in the battlefield more than 1,000 years ago, is one of the biggest fans of ancient armor in China. 根据第五段的“Due to prohibitions against privately storing suits of armor in ancient times, there are very few complete suits of armor that have been well preserved in China and detailed written records remain scarce. (由于古代禁止私藏甲胄,在中国保存完好的完整甲胄很少,详细的文字记录也很少。)”可知,在古代中国,保存完好的甲胄很少,与其相关的文字记录也少,由此可推测,古代保留下来的甲胄信息较少,这导致温陈华修复铠甲具有一定难度。故选B。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,根据第一段的“Visitors to the Yangguan Museum in Dunhuang, Northwest China’s Gansu Province, have the opportunity to see the first restored Mingguang armor from the Tang Dynasty. The 1.86-meter tall suit of armor gave visitors a window through which they could appreciate the wisdom of ancient Chinese artisans and the charm of China’s armor culture. (参观中国西北甘肃省敦煌市阳关博物馆的游客有机会看到第一件修复的唐代明光甲胄。这套1.86米高的盔甲为游客提供了一扇窗户,通过它他们可以欣赏到中国古代工匠的智慧和中国盔甲文化的魅力。)”可知,文章主要讲述了我国甲胄修复大师温陈华及其团队尽自己全力修复中国古代盔甲的故事,因此A项(铁人)可以用来形容温陈华及其团队。故选A。 C New projects in the Middle Eastern country of Jordan aim to repair damaged land in one of the world’s most water-starved nations. The restoration measures include bringing indigenous plants back to areas where they disappeared, as well as building modern water collection systems.  Local organizations believe the projects will help lessen the effects of land mismanagement and climate change. The efforts seek to slow expanding desertification, which happens when land turns into desert. A United Nations report states that 40 percent of land worldwide is currently degraded. It also predicts that by 2030, 700 million people could be displaced by drought. It blames the problems on land and water mismanagement, poor agricultural methods, mining and city development. Jordan is one of several countries already struggling with the effects of degradation, the report said. But environmentalists in Jordan are already taking steps to prevent further land damage. “We’re working on the water, we’re working on the green cover and we’re working also with the habitats of the creatures, from insects to animals,” said Deyala Tarawneh, who helped create WADI, an organization seeking to repair forests and grasslands and find ways to improve water security in Jordan. “The success rate of these plants is 85 percent, which is considered a very high percentage,” Tarawneh said. “And they only need to be watered once, which is also reducing the amount of water needed for the irrigation of the green areas.” But as WADI’s efforts continue, environmentalists say land restoration in Jordan still faces major difficulties. One of them is a lack of land areas available for restoration. In addition, many people in local communities are not willing to leave the land alone for at least one or two rainy seasons to let it recover. The UN report calls for financial support to strengthen restoration efforts in developing countries. Among other things, it urges the expansion of protected and conservation areas, better water management and improved agricultural methods. But the report also notes that a lack of action could result in up to 16 million square kilometers of land degradation by 2050.That is an area about the size of South America. 8. What does the underlined word “indigenous” in paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Commercial. B. Native. C. Delicate. D. Large. 9. What are the plants introduced to the land like? A. They are salt-tolerant. B. They are heat-resistant. C. They are drought-tolerant. D. They are disease-resistant. 10. Which measure is good for land but unfriendly to people? A. Building water collection systems. B. Adjusting land management systems. C. Leaving the land alone for recovery. D. Turning to traditional agricultural methods. 11. What can be the best title for the text? A. Food crops help improve soil health B. Jordan is facing severe desertification C. Jordan is at higher climate risk with land loss D. Restoration projects offer hope for saving damaged land 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. 根据划线词上文“New projects in the Middle Eastern country of Jordan aim to repair damaged land in one of the world’s most water-starved nations.(中东国家约旦的新项目旨在修复世界上最缺水国家之一的受损土地)”以及后文“back to areas where they disappeared(回到它们消失的地方)”可知,约旦的新项目旨在修复世界上最缺水国家之一的受损土地,说明措施是要把本地的植物带回它们消失的地方,故划线词意思是“本地的”。 根据倒数第三段“And they only need to be watered once, which is also reducing the amount of water needed for the irrigation of the green areas.(而且它们只需要浇一次水,这也减少了灌溉绿地所需的水量)”可知,引进到这片土地上的植物耐旱。 根据倒数第二段“But as WADI’s efforts continue, environmentalists say land restoration in Jordan still faces major difficulties. One of them is a lack of land areas available for restoration. In addition, many people in local communities are not willing to leave the land alone for at least one or two rainy seasons to let it recover. (但是,环保人士说,随着WADI的努力继续进行,约旦的土地恢复仍然面临重大困难。其中之一是缺乏可用于恢复的土地面积。此外,当地社区的许多人不愿意在至少一两个雨季让土地恢复原状)”可知,让土地自行恢复对土地有利,对人不利。故选C。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“New projects in the Middle Eastern country of Jordan aim to repair damaged land in one of the world’s most water-starved nations.(中东国家约旦的新项目旨在修复世界上最缺水国家之一的受损土地)”以及第二段“Local organizations believe the projects will help lessen the effects of land mismanagement and climate change. (当地组织认为,这些项目将有助于减轻土地管理不善和气候变化的影响)”结合文章主要说明了约旦的新项目开始致力于拯救受损的土地,列举了一些恢复土地的措施。可知,D选项“修复项目为拯救被破坏的土地提供了希望”最符合文章标题。故选D。 D People have been using products made with synthetic (合成的) rubber for more than a century. But high-quality tires for cars, trucks and aircraft still must contain 40 percent or more natural rubber. Rubber trees, which grow mainly in Southeast Asia, are most productive only under the best atmospheric conditions. They need even amounts of rainfall and bright sunshine and no strong winds. Rubber trees can be infected with a plant disease. The disease has ruined many rubber trees in South America, where the trees first grew. Naturally, then, scientists are looking for rubber substitutes. Dandelion (蒲公英) plants are much stronger. Farmers who have dandelions on their farm know how hard it is to remove them. These flowering grasses spread easily. They grow in poor soil and do not suffer too much in a changing climate. But qualities that make people dislike dandelions also make them a possible source of synthetic rubber. Scientists have known for a long time that the dandelion plant contains latex, the main substance in raw rubber. Researchers from Germany are working to engineer the dandelion’s genetic material. Dirk Pruefer, who works in a German research institute, says their goal is to produce large amounts of latex that can be used in industry. The genetically-engineered dandelion is already producing half a ton of rubber per hectare. But Dirk Pruefer says the scientists’ goal is about twice as much. They would also like to grow taller plants with upright leaves. Machine harvesting works better with such leaves. A leading tire manufacturer, Continental AG, is already testing tires made with dandelion-based rubber. And the quality is similar to that of the rubber from the rubber tree. Researchers believe rubber-producing yellow blooms may someday cover large fields that are currently not being used because of poor soil. 12. What is one of the weaknesses of rubber trees? A. Their production is poor. B. They are hard to harvest by machine. C. Their growing conditions are demanding. D. The rubber from them is not strong enough. 13. What qualities make the dandelion a potential substitute for the rubber trees? A. Being strong and containing latex. B. Being large and easy to grow. C. Being accessible and easy to harvest. D. Being tall and adaptable to climate change. 14. What’s the researchers’ attitude to the dandelion-based rubber? A. Doubtful. B. Positive C. Worried. D. Curious. 15. Where is the text probably taken from? A. A textbook. B. A diary. C. A poster. D. A report. C 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第二段“Rubber trees, which grow mainly in Southeast Asia, are most productive only under the best atmospheric conditions. They need even amounts of rainfall and bright sunshine and no strong winds.(橡胶树主要生长在东南亚,只有在最好的大气条件下才能最高产。它们需要均匀的降雨量、明亮的阳光和没有强风)”可知,橡胶树的弱点之一是生长条件很苛刻。故选C。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“These flowering grasses spread easily. They grow in poor soil and do not suffer too much in a changing climate.(这些开花的草很容易扩散。它们生长在贫瘠的土壤中,不受气候变化的影响)”以及第四段“Scientists have known for a long time that the dandelion plant contains latex, the main substance in raw rubber.(科学家们很早就知道蒲公英植物含有乳胶,这是生橡胶的主要物质)”可知,蒲公英坚固且含有乳胶的特性使它成为橡胶树的潜在替代品。故选A。 根据最后一段“A leading tire manufacturer, Continental AG, is already testing tires made with dandelion-based rubber. And the quality is similar to that of the rubber from the rubber tree. Researchers believe rubber-producing yellow blooms may someday cover large fields that are currently not being used because of poor soil.(领先的轮胎制造商大陆集团已经在测试用蒲公英基橡胶制成的轮胎。 Social fatigue (疲劳), or social exhaustion, is when you’re drained (精疲力竭) or burnt out by social interactions or relationships. Social fatigue can cause you to feel more lonely or burnt out than having relationships that truly fulfill you. ___16___.  Realize your causes Separate your idea of social interactions into energizing and draining social interactions.Think about the following: ___17___? Who drains you? What situations or places make you feel good? What situations or places drain you?  Block and barrier If you know the places that drain you faster, you have to begin to “block and barrier” those situations from your schedule. For example, if you know that loud bars drain your energy, you might want to decline your next invitation to a downtown night gathering. Or, if you feel drained being around negative people, consider skipping your next meeting. ___18___.  Make small social changes You don’t have to go big. Think about some small changes you can make to improve social interactions. For example, instead of asking boring, typical conversations starters, you can instead ask: Have any personal passion projects? Traveling anywhere fun this year? ___19___: Make plans that start during the event, so you have an excuse to leave early or get familiar with personality types to bring up a new conversation topic.  Bring a companion ___20___. If you can, think about someone you work with or a friend who has your back. During social fatigue situations, your companion should be your go-to person cheering you up and helping you feel positive. A. Or, try one of these other ideas B. Who are the people that fill you up C. Here are some ways of how to stop it D. That “why” can get you through social fatigue E. Have you been working on anything exciting recently F. You can prevent social fatigue if you’re with someone who supports you G. Nothing is worse than going into a place or being with someone draining you 【答案】16. C 17. B 18. G 19. A 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Social fatigue (疲劳), or social exhaustion, is when you’re drained (精疲力竭) or burnt out by social interactions or relationships. Social fatigue can cause you to feel more lonely or burnt out than having relationships that truly fulfill you.(社交疲劳或社交疲惫是指你在社交活动或人际关系中精疲力竭。社交疲劳会让你感到更加孤独或精疲力竭,而不是拥有真正让你满足的人际关系)”可知,上文提出了社交疲劳的问题,后文给了防止社交疲劳的方法。故C选项“这里有一些方法来阻止它”符合语境。故选C。 【17题详解】 根据上文“Separate your idea of social interactions into energizing and draining social interactions. Think about the following(把你对社交互动的想法分为激励和消耗两部分。想想下面的问题)”以及后文“Who drains you? What situations or places make you feel good? What situations or places drain you?(谁消耗你?什么情况或地方让你感觉良好?什么情况或地方让你筋疲力尽?)”可知,本句主要是针对社交互动的问题,后文提到了消耗你,推测本句是在说明反思让你感觉好的人,故B选项“那些让你充实的人是谁”符合语境。故选B。 【18题详解】 根据上文“If you know the places that drain you faster, you have to begin to “block and barrier” those situations from your schedule. For example, if you know that loud bars drain your energy, you might want to decline your next invitation to a downtown night gathering. Or, if you feel drained being around negative people, consider skipping your next meeting.(如果你知道哪些地方会让你更快地耗尽精力,你就必须开始把这些情况从你的时间表中“屏蔽和隔离”起来。 【19题详解】 根据上文“You don’t have to go big. Think about some small changes you can make to improve social interactions. For example, instead of asking boring, typical conversations starters, you can instead ask: Have any personal passion projects? Traveling anywhere fun this year?(你不必做得太大。想想你可以做的一些小的改变来改善社会交往。例如,不要问无聊的、典型的开场白,你可以这样问:有什么个人激情项目吗?今年有什么好玩的地方吗?)”以及后文“Make plans that start during the event, so you have an excuse to leave early or get familiar with personality types to bring up a new conversation topic.(在活动期间制定计划,这样你就有借口早点离开,或者熟悉性格类型来提出一个新的话题)”可知,后文给出了关于开场白的其他建议。 故选A。 【20题详解】 根据后文“If you can, think about someone you work with or a friend who has your back. During social fatigue situations, your companion should be your go-to person cheering you up and helping you feel positive.(如果可以的话,想想你的同事或支持你的朋友。在社交疲劳的情况下,你的伴侣应该是你的人,让你振作起来,帮助你感到积极)”可知,后文提到了“想想你的同事或支持你的朋友”,可知是建议和支持自己的人在一起。F选项中someone who supports对应后文someone you work with or a friend has your back,故F选项“如果你和支持你的人在一起,你可以避免社交疲劳”符合语境。 Imagine being able to go to your local park and ___21___ some tomatoes, or even bananas to take home for dinner as you please. Its 30,000 residents are ___25___ to help themselves to whatever grows, as are any other visitors. The town’s motto of sorts is, “Picking is ___26___ — help yourself!” Every year a new type of plant is highlighted. In 2011, 100 types of beans were planted, while 2012 saw the ___27___ of 20 onion varieties. It’s a community ___28___, as local citizens are encouraged to help plant and maintain the gardens. This offers an opportunity to socialize as well as to learn about ___29___, cultivating and harvesting food.  An Andernach resident said, “I often _____30_____ to pick some herbs that I’m missing at home. Everything is easily _____31_____. There aren’t any _____32_____. You just take what you need.”  Andernach isn’t the only edible city. It’s part of the Edible Cities Network, an EU-funded project _____33_____ green urban foot initiatives around the world. In February 2022, the first Edible Cities Network Conference took place. Dr Ina Säumel, Principal Investigator of the Edible Cities Network, called it “a unique opportunity to invite researchers and practitioners of edible city solutions to the same table and _____34_____ theory with practice.” It is a _____35_____ to the pressures of climate change, and a cause for hope. 21. I really need to get going,” Jeffrey, the bus driver, impatiently told a girl who wanted to get on the bus but only had a few pennies. She was around seven years old, and Jeffrey wasn’t in the mood to deal with unaccompanied children that day. “Please, sir. I want to visit my grandma,” the girl begged. “Then go and ask your parents for the money and come back next time,” Jeffrey replied. The girl finally left the bus, upset. Jeffrey saw her sit down at the bus stop and drove off. “My goodness! What have I done?” he asked himself regretfully later. He finished his route and went home greeting his wife, Greta, and sitting on the sofa to rest. He got his phone out to surf the Internet mindlessly. One local man had shared a picture that made him surprised. It was a picture of the little girl he had just refused an hour earlier. The word “Missing” was written on top of the picture. Shocked, he read further and learned the girl had left home and disappeared a day before. Her parents were anxious, trying to find her. Jeffrey’s back went cold. This girl was missing, and he had just kicked her out of the bus. “What have I done?” he said to himself. Immediately, he stood up and went to the front door, putting his shoes on hurriedly. “Where are you going?” Greta asked, coming out of the kitchen. “Quick! Call 911 and this number,” Jeffrey said, showing her the picture of the girl on his phone. “I saw this girl at a bus stop earlier, but I turned her away because she didn’t have enough money. I’m going to find her.” “OK, which bus stop exactly?” she asked, and he explained. Greta then called the police and the girl’s parents immediately. Jeffrey anxiously rushed to his car and started the engine. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Jeffrey then asked the girl gently, “Did you escape from your home? Jeffrey set out for the bus station where he had kicked the girl out of the bus, hoping that the girl was still there. He sped up all the way, keeping an eye on the pedestrians on both sides of the road. Just within 15 minutes, he arrived at the bus station. Then in sight was the girl, still sitting there, weeping. Hardly had the car stopped when Jeffrey ran to the girl. Jeffrey then asked the girl gently, “Did you escape from your home? Where were you going?”. Looking up at Jeffrey, the girl recognized that Jeffrey was the bus driver and said, “I want to visit my grandma.” “But you shouldn’t have left home without telling your parents. They are so worried about you,” Jeffrey said, “Now, let me drive you home.” The girl stood up and followed Jeffrey to his car. Just then, a police car arrived, followed by another car. Out of the car rushed the girl’s parents who had received a phone call from Jeffrey’s wife and knew that their daughter might be at the bus station. The girl’s mother embraced her daughter firmly and the father showed his gratitude to Jeffrey and the policeman. 词汇激活 行为类 动身前往:set out for/set off for/leave for 接到电话:receive a phone call/get a phone call 拥抱某人:embrace somebody/wrap somebody around one’s arms/hug somebody 情绪类 担心:worried/concerned 感谢:showing his gratitude /show his appreciation /be grateful 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B Visitors to the Yangguan Museum in Dunhuang, Northwest China’s Gansu Province, have the opportunity to see the first restored Mingguang armor (铠甲) from the Tang Dynasty. 4. What inspired Wen Chenhua to restore the armor? A. Visitors' encouragement. B. The charm of Chinese tradition. C. The wisdom of ancient Chinese artisans. D. His enthusiasm for ancient Chinese armor. 5. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “replicas” in paragraph 3? A. Styles. B. Displays. C. Copies. D. Statues. C New projects in the Middle Eastern country of Jordan aim to repair damaged land in one of the world’s most water-starved nations. Restoration projects offer hope for saving damaged land D People have been using products made with synthetic (合成的) rubber for more than a century. Please get off. He finished his route and went home, greeting his wife, Greta, and sitting on the sofa to rest.
