(2024-2025学年高二上·河北沧州·阶段练习)Both of my parents worked full time so my grandpa often took care of us during holidays. We never really knew what adventure lay before us at Grandpa’s. It could be fishing in ponds, or we might hang around his basement or garage that held so many interesting objects. The options were endless.
One day, Grandpa loaded the three of us into his car. And we were headed toward Broadway, I remember coming up to 34th Street. Grandpa talked about gum(口香糖) and asked if any of us wanted some. My grandpa liked chewing gum very much and always had multiple flavors in his pockets. My sister, Charity, seated up front, took a package. Angie, my twin sister, and I were in the back seat. We both voiced our desire to have a piece, too. Grandpa turned around to hand us a package, and to our surprise we were suddenly in the air.
Grandpa’s car had climbed the curb. The passenger side was on the curb and the driver’s side was still planted firmly on the street. My grandpa quickly turned back and grabbed the wheel. I remember all of us, Grandpa included, screaming as we saw a SPEED LIMIT sign suddenly appear in front of the windshield (挡风玻璃). He only had moments to react. Just as quickly as we had gone up, we came crashing back down. We were headed back toward Broadway, miraculously avoiding running into the metal sign.
I remember Grandpa said to Angie and me, “We’ll hold off on the gum for a bit.” We continued to drive up to Broadway and then turned to head east down the main road. We passed Casey Middle School and. Approached the stoplight that sat there. Grandpa turned around again to pass back a package of gum. I remember trying to reassure Grandpa that we could hold out until the stoplight, but Grandpa was not having it. His grandchildren needed gum, and we were going to get it. That’s when we hit something solid.

单元话题1 健康饮食—食物
When I was a child, I was very greedy. Whenever I saw something delicious, I would ask my mom to buy it for me. There was one thing that I could never get enough of, and that was cream bread. Due to my constant consumption, my body became increasingly overweight, and my resistance weakened. As a result, my mom stopped buying it for me.
One day, while shopping with my mom, we passed by a bakery, and I started begging for cream bread. To my surprise, this time my mom agreed without hesitation. We entered the bakery, but unfortunately, they had sold out of cream bread. So my mom bought me a kind of regular bread.
Upon returning home, I felt unhappy and kept thinking about the delicious cream bread in my mind. Suddenly, the sound of the phone interrupted my thoughts. My mom answered the call briefly and then quickly changed her clothes. Seeing her anxious expression, I asked curiously, “Mom, what’s wrong? Is there something urgent?” While changing her clothes, she replied, “There’s an emergency at your aunt’s house. I need to go check on it. I’ll be back soon. If you’re hungry, just eat the bread we bought earlier.” With those words, she grabbed her bag and left.
After watching TV, I was hungry. So, following my mom’s instructions, I started eating the bread. However, as soon as I took a bite, I immediately spat it out and complained loudly, “This bread is so tasteless! It’s not even half as good as cream bread!” I threw the bread aside in frustration. Later on, my stomach growled even louder, causing me to think of ways to make the bread more enjoyable. Suddenly, I remembered that there was a bottle of something similar to cream in my mom’s cosmetics(化妆品) — facial cleanser(洗面奶). So, I walked over to her dressing table and picked up the bottle. Excitedly, I opened the bottle and squeezed(挤) the cleanser onto the bread, thinking to myself that this bread would surely taste great now.

(2024-2025学年高二上·安徽阜阳·期中)I’d always loved to sing and had already signed up for the school talent show in the fourth grade when, unexpectedly, I started stuttering(口吃). I went from being a carefree 10-year-old to a shy and insecure one. I was afraid of speaking in class, ordering at restaurants, even introducing myself.
My dad told me that he’d also had a stutter when he was young. He’d gone to speech doctor, and the techniques he was taught worked for him. I tried them as well. But they didn’t help.
If I couldn’t bring myself to speak normally, how would I be able to sing in the school talent show? I decided to practice at home, where no one could hear me mess up. To my amazement, the words came smoothly when I sang. My stutter disappeared for the moment. I felt so free onstage performing in the talent show. After that, I began learning how to play the guitar.
By the summer I was 16, severe anxiety and depression set in. My stutter came back, and I was afraid to talk at all. I didn’t tell anyone how I was feeling. I didn’t want to appear weak.
One steamy August afternoon, I went to the coolness of the basement, where I kept my musical equipment. I sat down and sobbed, overcome by the hopelessness I hadn’t been able to express.
Suddenly, my eyes lit on the guitar I had gotten for my thirteenth birthday. I picked it up and started playing. Then I opened my mouth, and the words came flooding out.
On the spot, I wrote a song I called “I Will Trust”. I sang about how lost I felt, how the pain I’d experienced weighed me down — everything I hadn’t been able to voice because I was afraid of showing my weakness. I sang it again and again.
I cried again, this time for joy, because I could express my deepest feelings in my song.

Mary was the art teacher for primary school students. On this particular day, she was guiding them through the process of drawing a scenic landscape. Akila yawned(打哈欠), clearly disinterested - drawing wasn’t her thing. A small group of students gathered around Tina, laughing at her unusual drawing: a sun sporting sunglasses and trees topped with ice cream cones.
Mary instructed Tina firmly but with unease, “Draw it the way I showed you.” As the lesson continued, doubt crept into Mary’s mind. Had the joy of creativity been overshadowed by the pressure to fit in? She scanned the room, observing her students’ faces – some concentrated, others uncertain. Akila’s disinterest was clear and Tina’s imaginative drawing had been met with ridicule instead of praise.
After class, Mary sat down with Tina, her tone softening, “Why did you draw the sun with sunglasses and the trees with ice creams?” she asked gently.
Tina’s eyes sparkled with a touch of rebellion(叛逆)-“I love ice cream, and I thought the sun would look cool with sunglasses. Why do we always have to draw like everyone else?”
Mary paused, her thoughts racing. Tina’s drawings weren’t just curious —they were a window into a world where imagination ruled, where rales could be bent into delightful chaos. Was she, by enforcing a rigid style, killing that very creativity?
The next morning, Mary walked into the classroom with a renewed sense of purpose. She placed a large sheet of paper in front of the class and announced a new project: they would create a collective(集体的)artwork titled “Our Dream World” with no rules. They were free to use colors, shapes, and patterns however they wished.
At first, the students hesitated, unsure of this newfound freedom. Akila leaned back, skeptical of what seemed like another pointless exercise. But Tina, her creativity no longer restricted, eagerly grabbed her crayons and began to draw with abandon. Then, Maya joined in. And then Michael...

My 13-year-old son, Anthony, jumped out of bed one morning in March2020 and asked me the question he’d asked every day for the last eight weeks. “Are we going to pick up the dog today?”
Two months earlier, a couple from Texas had reached out to me on social media to give us one of the puppies. I wasn’t sure. I had been struggling with getting Anthony, whom I’d recently adopted, to trust that I was his forever family.
I grew up in poverty in Uganda, a country of Africa, enduring daily beatings from my father and struggling for basic necessities. When I was 10, I fled and lived on the streets of Kampala for four years, working at a produce market to survive. A kind family took me in, provided food and eventually a home, and offered to pay for my education. After graduating from college in California on a scholarship, I pursued a career as a translator, focused on helping vulnerable(易受伤害的) children.
In 2016, I became a foster(代养的) parent, welcoming children into my home and providing them with a loving environment. Now, here I was, four years later, with an adopted son who watched my every move, wondering if he could fully trust me.
As the weeks went by, the more I saw of my younger self in Anthony. He read voraciously(如饥似渴地) , helped around the house and asked me for very little. He was working very hard to please me — a clear sign that he didn’t trust my commitment to care for him.
One afternoon, I came into the kitchen and Anthony immediately started cleaning up.
I stopped him. Would he always wonder if I was going to give him up? “You don’t need to work so hard,” I said. “This is your forever home. You belong here. You can be yourself.”
He shrugged. “I just don’t want to mess this up.”
My heart broke for him. I was more determined than ever to make him feel loved.
In early 2020, we moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Not long after, the couple in Texas offered us this puppy that Anthony couldn’t stop thinking about. He had been asking about the dog ever since.
That morning in March, he asked again.

Joel Kruisselbrink, an exercise advisor at Lelie Zorggroep, Holland, is a social worker, coach and fitness advisor of the elderly in nursing homes.
Joel found many seniors would spend their days doing nothing and sleeping away and their bodies became weak easily, especially in the changing seasons. Joel realized that he should do something for them to make a change for better.
“How can I inspire the elderly to start moving?” he asked himself. He tried to share the goods of sports with them, but with little result. There were many reasons for this. One main reason is that there is little money for fitness equipment. Another is that it is really boring to do exercises.
Finally, the answer came through his young child, who showed him the joy of playing with everyday materials. The boy would happily run after a balloon here and there, or climb up and down for a beautiful leaf, or joyfully play with some sticks. Anyway, these materials are all easy to be found in our daily life. But he noticed that it should be enjoyable for the players, especially there are more players.
“Play is the key to getting active!” he said.
Joel believed that when movement is made fun and interesting, it no longer feels like exercise.
He also found that group challenges can create chances to develop social skills, build friendships, and support each other in their physical fitness journeys. “The most beautiful thing is to see the seniors’ smiles!” he said. The smiles may show a person’s inner part and may do good to one’s whole health.

David was a windsurfer, who was serious and hardworking. He dreamed of becoming a city champion of the annual Teenager Windsurfing Race. To achieve it, he barely missed a single game or practice whatever the weather. After months of intense training, the big day finally arrived!
The beach was crowded with the excited audience, including reporters and photographers. The speaker system was announcing the names of the windsurfers, calling them to get ready for the race. And there was David, in a line with other windsurfers, all of them moving nervously up and down on the waves behind an imaginary starting line. They were all fighting for the best position to start and were tense as a result, ignoring the vast sea they were on.
The moment the starter’s signal sounded, David was off, so natural and quick. He pulled hard at his sail to race just ahead of the group. As he picked up speed, gliding(滑行) over the waves, he felt the familiar joy and freedom that windsurfing always gave him. What he loved was simply being out at sea. He could hardly stop himself from shouting out in excitement, rushing to the finishing line for the first.
“Go! David!” The wind carried over a familiar voice. He looked around and spotted his elder sister Jessica on her speedboat upwind of him cheering for him. She waved at David and he nodded his head in acknowledgement, even though he knew she was too far away to see him. Just as he turned away, however, out of the comer of his eye, he saw smoke behind the speedboat, on the shore. Knowing that the smoke could tell him the direction the wind was blowing, he decided to study it for a moment out of habit. Just as he was getting a better sense of how to use the wind to his advantage, he saw it.

Kelly is a nurse. Her kidney(肾脏) proved to be a perfect match for her cousin, Dana, who is a teacher. Her kidney had worsened to the point where she required a transplant(移植). As Kelly told Dana, “I’m in good health and I almost never get sick or ill. It seems that I can be a donor for you.” Dana was wild with joy.
Later on a Thursday afternoon, after spending the first of two days undergoing tests to confirm her kidney was a match for Dana, Kelly got a call from a Cleveland Clinic caregiver. They were canceling the second day of her tests. A CT scan revealed the presence of a tumor(肿瘤) on Kelly’s right kidney.
Kelly was shocked about the discovery and concerned she might no longer be a donor available for Dana. That meant that Kelly had to have an operation to remove the tumor, unable to donate her kidney. Meanwhile Dana had to wait for some other donors for a matchable kidney, which was really hard to find. Dana was thrown back to desperation.
The cousins were at a loss. But their doctors wouldn’t give up. They tried every possible means to find a solution that could satisfy both sides, treating Kelly’s illness and offering Dana transplanting. But the bad news was that there had been few such reported cases.
Determined to solve this difficult problem, Dr. Wee, director of the Kidney Transplant Program, held meetings with a team of specialists to discuss over details of the case and best steps to move forward. They worked day and night to search for related information and make analysis. Seeing the devotion of the experts, Kelly and Dana felt the flame of hope returning to their hearts.

(2024-2025学年高二上·河北唐山·开学考试)Gabriel had always been fascinated by robots. His mother, however, did not think much of it. She often criticized him, urging him to focus on his schoolwork instead of those “useless machines”, as she called them. She wanted him to spend more time on his books, and less time lost in the world of robotics. He, however, always worked quietly on parts, trying to create inventions that could solve everyday problems.
One day, Gabriel came back from school, bursting through the front door, holding a shining award in his hand. The gas detection robot he had built for months had just won first place in the regional competition. His heart raced as he imagined his mother would be proud this time.
“Mom! Look! I won!” he cried. His mother, standing at the kitchen counter, looked briefly. She sighed, “That’s nice, Gabriel, but I still don’t see what good it will do you. It’s not going to help you with your grades or get you into college. You need to focus on something more practical.” Her voice showed no interest. Gabriel remained quiet, determined to prove that what he was doing had value.
One evening, as the delicious smell of dinner floated through the house, an unexpected danger was quietly closing. Gabriel’s mother had been busy in the kitchen but had forgotten to turn off the gas. Unaware of the coming threat, she had wandered into the living room, settling down comfortably in front of the TV. The gas continued to escape, silently filling the air. The house was on the edge of a disaster.

It was time for the annual Potato-Salad Contest in Russet Park. After trying for the third time, Alexis shook her head sadly. There was no way she would win the Golden Potato again because Grandpa wasn’t here this year.
Memories of how Grandpa taught her to make potato rose in her mind. She sighed and missed Grandpa so much.
Alexis cut the potatoes and mixed the boiled potatoes, some sauces and a little salt and peppers in a bowl. But it didn’t taste right. Alexis tried a bite of the salad mixture, wondering what was missing. Seeing her frown, Mom suggested, “What about something spicy? Your Grandpa loved spicy things.”
“You’re right! Maybe he put a jalapeno pepper in it,” Alexis said, cutting up a bright green jalapeno and adding it to the bowl.
It was closer, but it still didn’t taste right. Alexis was drooping her head, disappointed. “Should we look in a cookbook?”
“Grandpa was never one to follow a recipe,” Dad entered the kitchen and said.
It was true. People loved Grandpa’s potato salad because it was one of a kind. Alexis remembered posing with Grandpa for a photo while they were making the salad.
Photo! That gave her an idea. Alexis hurried to the bookcase and found an old photo album. She immediately flipped it open, expecting to find clues in the photos there. Lots of photos showed Grandpa and Grandma cooking together. Dad laughed, “He and Grandma loved to tease each other but he always called her Honey.”
“Do you think he put honey in the potato salad?” Mum asked.
“It is worth a try,” said Alexis. She stirred some honey into the bowl.
But it still wasn’t quite right. Alexis’ heart sank, on the verge of giving up. Dad kept flipping the album. At the end of the album was the picture of Grandpa and Alexis making the salad together.

(2024-2025学年高二上·福建泉州·期中)Every girl dreams and Jenny Green is no exception. She loved music and movement of ballet and read dozens of books on how to be a ballerina(芭蕾舞女演员) but she was a shy child and avoided the spotlight.
When she was 13, she joined the training team, a dance line at her school in San Pedro, California. One day, Jenny’s coach suggested she attend a free ballet class at the Boys & Girls Club, where she often went after school. At first, Jenny felt out of place in the class. She was older than most of the students. And instead of the tights, slippers, and leotards(训练服) the other girls wore, Jenny had on a T-shirt, baggy shorts, and sweat socks.
Over time, however, she began to enjoy the lessons. She discovered that her body — especially her long legs and strong, flexible muscles — was just right for ballet. She spent most days twisting, twirling, and leaping. When she wasn’t performing, she was practicing. When she wasn’t practicing, she was stretching. She took classes almost every day and hoped one day her dream would come true.
One day she saw an advertisement that a famous ballerina troupe(剧团) would be performing in her hometown. Her thoughts ran wild, “I must meet up with the leader of the troupe and show her my skills,” she murmured to herself. She dressed herself in her ballerina costume and managed to escape the guards and hid in the dressing room. To her luck the leader entered and she shyly knocked at the door. She bravely approached her and handed her a bunch of red roses.
The leader observed her action as she told her the dream. “Alright, you dance and I will give you my opinions.” But half way through the dance she stopped her and said, “I’m sorry you’re not good enough!”

One day, their school announced an art competition. The winning artworks would be displayed at the city’s annual art fair. Mia’s eyes lit up when she heard about it. “Lucy, you have to enter!” she said excitedly. But Lucy hesitated, her stomach twisting in knots. “I’m not good enough,” she muttered.
Mia wouldn’t give up. “I’ll help you,” she said. Over the next few weeks, Mia spent her free time encouraging Lucy, giving her ideas, and boosting her confidence. Finally, Lucy completed her painting — a beautiful depiction of a sunset over a meadow. “It’s perfect!” Mia said, beaming.
The day of the competition arrived, and Lucy submitted her painting, her hands trembling. When the results were announced, Lucy’s painting won second place. Lucy was thrilled but also terrified about having her painting displayed at the fair. “I don’t think I can go,” she told Mia.

As I began to wade through thirteen pages of the credit-card company’s new policy, I wasn’t sure how it was going to affect me personally. As I waited to be connected to a customer service rep, I considered whether I should even write the fifth novel in my Old Cape House series. Did my readers really enjoy the mysterious historical stories I told? Should I take on more debt to buy my paperback books? I thought about all the author events, book signings, and book fairs that might be canceled because of the virus. When would normal life return?
“Hello, Ms. Struna, this is Thomas. May I have your account information?”
After repeating the information he needed, I explained my dilemma in trying to understand the new policy and asked how it would affect my future purchases.
“Please, do not worry. You will have no change.”
“Are you sure? I am an author and travel frequently. I need to have access to my card at all times for big or small purchases.” I laughed to myself, thinking I wasn’t going anywhere for a while, at least until there was a vaccine.
“Let me reassure you. There will be no change to your card, but Ms. Struna, may I ask you one more question? Are you the author of The Old Cape House?”
My jaw dropped. He was talking about my first novel of suspenseful historical fiction, The Old Cape House, published in 2013. I was stunned and I stammered, “Why, yes I am.” I was still skeptical about what he wanted from me.
Thomas kept talking. “I thought it was you. I recognized your name, and when you told me you were an author, I knew it was you.”
“Oh, my goodness.” My heart started to beat faster with delight at the connection I was making with an unknown foreign reader.

“I’ll ask around." Henry made a note in his notebook.
He stopped at Mrs. Burke's, 27 Maple. She opened the door holding two babies. Her other two kids held on toher legs. Henry stared. "You could use a babysitter." "Definitely. I meant to put an ad in The Gazette, but....Know any neighbors with experience?”

单元话题6 体育精神
Jim stared at the ground and sighed in disappointment. Players from the opposing team raced past Jim, celebrating their shocking victory. They’d scored the game-winning goal just seconds before the end of the game.
“Just one word to describe a loss like that,” Jim mumbled to his teammate Devin.
“Terrible!” Devin sighed. “It was a tough one.” He trotted(小步快跑) toward the middle of the field to shake hands with the winning team. Jim walked slowly behind Devin. He unhappily slapped hands with the winners, and then stopped to shut his eyes as the autumn air cooled his sweaty face.
“Terrible,” he repeated to himself as he sat on the bench and pulled his jacket on. “Let’s get some hot chocolate and watch the next game,” Devin said. There were eight teams in the YMCA league, so games would go on all morning. “Sorry. I’m heading home,” Jim said, “I’ve had enough soccer for today.”
As he reached the gate, Jim glanced back to see the next two teams take the field. They were jumping and shouting, excited to play. “That was us a little while ago, before we were discouraged.” Jim thought.
So why we lost the game at last? Jim asked himself. How did such a well-played game end up with such a terrible result? It was still clear in his head: Jim had the ball deep on the Jets’ side of the field, looking for Devin or another teammate to pass to. His team had outplayed the Jets for most of the game, but failed within the last seconds.
Jim let out a deep breath. The morning was growing warmer. Perfect for soccer. Jim looked back toward the field. He couldn’t see it, but he could hear the excited voices as the game continued.

单元话题7 医疗健康
It was 40 years ago. One day, Emma came back to their apartment from work and realized that her husband, David, was extremely ill. He was throwing up and slurring(发音不清) his words. Immediately, Emma grabbed her purse and took him by taxi to the nearest hospital, on the Lower East Side of New York City. The minutes slowly passed as they waited to see a doctor.
They sat there for a couple of hours, and it was pretty clear that nobody was going to pay attention to David. So they rushed to a second hospital, where they were also ignored. Emma knew something was very wrong with David, so they went to a third hospital. As she told the receptionist what was happening, Emma sensed the person wasn’t going to treat their case with urgency.
Emma was on the edge of a breakdown. After three failed attempts to get help, she had reached her limit. She started to shout in the lobby(大厅). That’s when her unsung hero appeared.
That person was a young man with dark hair and a white physician’s coat. He came to Emma and said, “How can I help you? What’s going on here?” Emma explained what was happening to David, and that she was afraid it was serious.
The young man said, “You know, I just got done with my neurological residency(神经系统的实习期) up at Lenox Hill Hospital. I’ll take him in the back and look.” Within two or three minutes, the young man came out and said, “You are absolutely right. Something is very seriously wrong with your husband.”
The man told Emma to take her husband to Lenox Hill Hospital, and that he had called the doctor with whom he had done his residency.
“He’ll be waiting for you,” said the young man.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
(2024-2025学年高二上·内蒙古锡林郭勒盟·期中)The school gymnasium was transformed into a hub(中心) of innovation and excitement as students from all grades gathered for the annual science fair. Projects lined the walls, each one a testament(证明) to the hard work and creativity of the students. Among the exhibits was a particularly impressive volcano created by a group of enthusiastic freshmen, and a sophisticated solar-powered car designed by a team of seniors.
In the corner of the gymnasium, a slightly nervous but determined-looking girl named Mei stood next to her project. She had spent weeks preparing for this event, working tirelessly on a device that could convert(使转变) thermal energy from the environment into electricity. Her invention was a small, compact box with a series of thermoelectric cells(热电元件) and a small fan to let heat out. Mei had named it “Eco-Power,” and she hoped it would impress the judges and her peers.
As the first group of students approached her table, Mei took a deep breath and began to explain the workings of her invention. She was proud of her work, but the pressure of the science fair was starting to get to her. Her hands trembled slightly as she demonstrated how the device could power a small LED light using the heat from a warm cup of water.
The crowd around Mei’s project grew, and she could feel the weight of their expectations. She noticed a few students whispering and pointing at her device, and she couldn’t tell if they were impressed or skeptical. Mei’s heart raced as she continued to answer questions and explain the scientific principles behind her invention.

【答案】
It turned out that we had just hit a bus! Grandpa calmly told us to “Stay put” and climbed out of the car. By this time, two men wearing cowboy hats had exited the bus and come to the back of the large vehicle. They approached my grandpa, and all three of them began talking. I watched from the back seat of the car, trying to get any of the conversation I could, but I couldn’t hear anything. That’s when my twin sister noticed something. “Look!” she pointed to the bus.
“It’s Loretta Lynn, a famous singer,” I said in surprise. I realized that my grandpa had just run into Loretta Lynn’s tour bus. A slight wave came from Loretta Lynn, and my grandfather waved back. It appeared that there was no damage to the bus and also there was no damage to grandpa’s car. At last, my grandpa shook the men’s hands and made a final wave to Loretta Lynn. Later, Grandpa went into the car, sighing, “I’ll never hand you gum while driving.”

【答案】
I had squeezed a lot of facial cleanser onto the bread when my mom suddenly returned. “What are you doing, honey?” she asked in surprise. I proudly held up the bread and replied, “I’m making cream bread!” My mom’s eyes widened in horror as she realized what I had done. She quickly snatched the bread away from me, scolding, “This is facial cleanser, not cream. It’s very dangerous to eat!” I felt scared and started crying. Hugging me, Mom comforted softly, “It’s okay, sweetie. Everyone makes mistakes. But remember, never eat anything that isn’t food.”
My mom sat down beside me and explained gently. “Cream bread is made with a special kind of cream that is safe to eat. The facial cleanser we use is for cleaning our faces and shouldn’t be eaten. It’s important to always read the labels and instructions before using or eating anything.” I nodded seriously, understanding the importance of being careful with what I put in my mouth. My mom continued, “Next time, let’s make some real cream bread together, okay?” I smiled brightly at the thought of making delicious cream bread with my mom.

【答案】One possible version:
The next day, I filmed a video of myself performing the song and posted it on the Internet. Out of expectation, hundreds of complete strangers left comments that I had uplifted them with my music. Ever since, I’d been writing more songs, which had inspirational words that explored the human condition and gave people courage and power. I was so happy that my songs had a positive influence on many people. I became well received by people. Admiring my beautiful voice, some of them even encouraged me to participate in the National Talent Show.
When I saw the National Talent Show notice for signing up, I felt called to give it a try. I signed up. Before singing on the stage, I said, “I have a bit of… stutter.” All the people present gave an astonished look. I focused on my self-created song. Just as I’d hoped, there was no stutter at all while I sang. When I finished, the whole crowd was on their feet. I couldn’t believe it! All the five judges gave me the votes. After that, I gained more confidence and amazingly, my stutter gradually disappeared while I spoke. I owed many thanks to music.

单元话题3 美术

【答案】
Paragraph 1: As the students worked. Mary observed them with curiosity. She noticed how Akila, initially disinterested, had quietly chosen vibrant colors and was now blending them together to create a swirling sky filled with fantastical creatures that flew over a stone castle. Meanwhile, Tina was enthusiastically adding playful details to her section of the paper-a whimsical garden where flowers wore hats and creatures rested on the ice cream-topped trees. Mary felt a wave of relief washed over her. The room was alive with chatter and laughter, as Akila and Tina frequently exchanged ideas and inspired one another. Akila even leaned over to admire Tina’s ice cream trees and said, “That is mind-blowing!” It was wonderful to see them cooperate, their initial differences melting away in the warmth of shared creativity.
Paragraph 2: Mary stood back and surveyed the creation. The enomious canvas had transformed into a magnificent portrayal of each student’s imagination, forming a breathtaking landscape that reflected their individuality yet spoke to their collective spirit. Mary felt a sense of pride swell within her; she realized that in letting go of rigid structures, her students gave their painting an unrealistic but dream-like quality. Akila, Tina, and the rest of the class had not only embraced their own creative paths but had also nurtured each other’s ideas. They were thrilled, “It was the best painting ever! We should definitely hang it on the wall!” Inspired by the moment, Mary decided to host an exhibition of their dream world, inviting parents and other classes to admire the beauty of imagination unleashed in her classroom.

单元话题4 诗歌

【答案】One possible version:
That morning in March, he asked again. The gleam in his eyes was a brilliant spark of life, dancing amidst the lingering doubts that clouded my mind. My heart softened as I gazed into the hopeful eyes, feeling the weight of his desire. With a tender nod, I leaned in close and whispered softly, “Yes, Anthony, today is indeed the day we bring home our little bundle of joy.” We drove 16 hours to Texas to pick up our bundle of fur and energy. We chose the name Simba — after the character in The Lion King — because Anthony wanted me to have a reminder of Africa. He was still trying to earn my approval.
Simba was adorable, but he tested my patience as puppies do. One day, he had an accident on the carpet. I sighed and reached for the cleaning supplies. As I knelt down to start the cleanup, I noticed Anthony standing nearby, watching me with a mixture of guilt and concern. I said with a reassuring smile, “It’s all right, Simba. Accidents are a natural part of life. You belong here, and we still love you unconditionally.” My words seemed to have a calming effect on Anthony, as his shoulders slowly relaxed and a sense of relief washed over his face. He stepped closer and said, “Yeah, Simba. Nothing you do can mess up this family.”

单元话题5 社交媒体

【答案】
Joel began introducing simple, fun games and exercises that get them moving and smiling. He always tried to find a creative way to inspire elderly people to stay active and live life to the fullest. By combining sports, games, and other enjoyable activities and designing exercises and games that make movement enjoyable, Joel brought joy to the seniors in the nursing home and improved social connections among them. The seniors really enjoyed his games and practiced more. So he filmed their games and shared the videos on social media.
His work has gained attention on social media, and his videos serve as inspiration for others. Joel’s creative way to exercise for the elderly in nursing homes offers valuable lessons to teachers of children with special needs. Besides, the sense of community that arises from exercising together is powerful. Similarly, teachers can design activities that encourage social interaction among students with special needs. Joel’s action reminds us that life never pauses, and it’s worth living it with more joy and sunshine.

单元话题6 体育精神

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Not just the smoke but a big fire! David couldn’t believe his eyes. It occurred to him that it was from a restaurant where he once did a part-time job and that all the staff might be among the audience. He looked back at the beach, where all of the audience were too attentive to the race to be conscious of the fire. It was then that he made a resolution to turn around, passing by the other windsurfers and racing towards the shore, rather than the finishing line.
The other windsurfers were far ahead of him at that time. Apparently, this promising teenager had withdrawn the Race. Many confused people who noticed his strange behavior also spotted the shocking smoke and fire on the shore. The teenager rushed towards the fire, followed by many adults, including the staff. More hands made light work. They put out the fire before it was too late, minimizing the losses. Due to his contribution, the organizing committee awarded David the sportsmanship Award. All the audience applauded him for his acceptance speech: “I don’t regret losing the chance of becoming a champion to help others.”

Dr. Wee told the cousins that with their expertise they could deal with their situations at the same time. First, they safely removed Kelley’s right kidney with the tumor in it. Then they removed the tumor from the kidney. After the repair and reconstruction, and with more than 95% of the healthy kidney remaining. Dr. Wee transplanted it into Dana. It turned out the win-win practice, a breakthrough in similar medical cases.
The cousins recovered from their surgeries. “I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude to Kelly and all the doctors and thankfulness for the opportunity I’ve been given.” said Dana. “Now I have the opportunity to see my three sons marry, and have their children. Those are what I might not have been able to look forward to before.” Dana, with a perfectly functioning kidney, planned to return to her teaching job in the next spring. Kelly felt blessed to have had her tumor removed while helping her cousin to recover with a transplant.

【答案】
Suddenly, a loud alarm rang through the house. Gabriel’s gas detection robot had sensed the leak and sprung into action. The shrill sound jolted his mother from her TV reverie, her heart pounding as she realized the danger they were in. Quickly, she rushed to the kitchen, turned off the gas, and opened all the windows to let the fresh air disperse the dangerous fumes. As the alarm ceased, she stood there, breathing a sigh of relief, suddenly understanding the significance of Gabriel’s invention. It wasn’t just a toy or a useless machine; it was a lifesaver.
Gabriel’s mother held the robot gently in her arms, waiting for Gabriel to get back from school. She couldn’t wait to tell him how his creation had prevented a potential tragedy. When Gabriel finally walked through the door, his mother greeted him with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face. “Gabriel, you were right,” she said, hugging him tightly. “This robot isn’t just a hobby; it’s something that can protect us, make our lives safer. I’m sorry I didn’t see it before.” Gabriel’s heart swelled with pride and joy. From that day on, his mother became his biggest supporter, encouraging him to pursue his passion for robotics and recognizing the value of his inventions in making the world a better, safer place.

It looked like Grandpa was crying in the photo. Crying! Yes, the secret was about crying! Grandpa once said with wet eyes that the potato salad definitely brought tears to his eyes. Then, delighted and expected, she cut the onion with tears in her eyes. Finally, adding the onions into the salad and mixed it, Alexis’s palms getting sweaty. Heart raising, she held the salad to her family and waited for their try.
With hesitation, the family tasted the potato salad with onions in it. Nodding their heads at the same time, smile flickered across everyone’s face. They eventually figured out Grandpa’s recipe. Finally, Alexis completed the salad and took part in the contest. As the result that Alexis’s potato salad won was announced, Alexis was thinking about Grandpa, her tears welling up uncontrollably.

【答案】One possible version:
On hearing this, Jenny ran as fast as her legs could carry her and was ashamed. She felt that all her efforts were in vain. Tears welled up in her eyes as she rushed out. But instead of giving up, she practiced even harder. She knew that she still had a long way to go. She took every class seriously, analyzing every movement and learning from every mistake. She was determined to prove that she could be a good ballerina one day. She practiced early in the morning and late at night, her body becoming more and more flexible and her skills improving significantly.
A year later, she heard that the same ballet troupe was performing in her town again. This time, she was much more confident. She managed to get a chance to perform in front of the troupe leader again. She danced gracefully and passionately. (2024-2025学年高二上·陕西咸阳·阶段练习)Lucy loved painting and had a dream of becoming an artist. However, she was very shy and never showed her paintings to anyone except her best friend, Mia. Mia often encouraged Lucy to share her work, but Lucy always shook her head nervously. “What if they laugh at me?” she would say.

Mia grabbed Lucy’s hand and smiled warmly. “You’ve come this far, Lucy. You have to see how amazing your work is!” she said. Reluctantly, Lucy agreed, and they headed to the art fair together. When they arrived, Lucy spotted her painting displayed among the others. A small crowd had gathered around it, admiring the vibrant colors and the peaceful feeling it conveyed. “Who painted this?” someone asked. Before Lucy could react, Mia proudly said, “She did!” and gently pushed Lucy forward.
Lucy stood before her painting at the fair, her heart pounding. People smiled at her and praised her work. “It’s beautiful!” a woman said. “You have real talent.” Hearing those words, Lucy felt her fear melt away, replaced by a warm sense of pride. She glanced at Mia, who gave her a thumbs-up. At that moment, Lucy realized she could chase her dream — and that she wasn’t alone.

“Ms. Struna, your book changed me. It changed how I look at the world. It showed me ways to be more adventuresome and to be open to new things. Thank you so very much.”

Paragraph 2:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I was stunned at the idea that I had made a difference in someone’s life. I murmured unbelievably and excitedly, “I had thought nobody would like this type of novel. I was about to give up when you gave me strength.” At this time, there were so many people standing in line that he had to be busy with his work. Therefore, he didn’t say too much, just giving me a determined look and telling me to call him as he handed me a note with a telephone number. Considering that maybe he was off duty, I called him. He was extremely grateful for my calling and said emotionally, “It was your Old Cape House series that inspired me and people around me with confidence to life. Hoping you can continue writing to bring hope and new things to your loyal fans.”
I hung up, ending this coincidental connection to a fan reader in a faraway place. I sank into thought: because of the outbreak of the epidemic, everyone's life was deeply affected and couldn't go out. Yes, he was right. It may be a good chance for me to bring a new world and something about adventure to their life. What a kind man! His words were like the warm sunshine to sweep away dark clouds overhead and bring me hope and confidence. Now I think it is time to open my computer and continue writing.

As Henry made more notes, an idea started forming in his head. Maybe he could create a news page for the neighbors. But how would he print it? He pedaled to school and explained everything to his good friends. “Let’s work it out together.” All his friends agreed to help. The next day, good news came. Jenny helped to get a second-hand color printer and Bob’s father promised to supply paper to them for free. “Perfect!” Henry said.
Customers cheered Henry's idea and helped supply the news. Miss Roberts advertised that she needed a teenager to help clean her basement. The new family who just moved in invited neighbors to a “Meet the Johnsons” party. Henry added: “Stories told by friendly gentleman at 26 Maple. Stop by to chat.” Henry typed the news, made photocopies, and delivered the first Tree Streets News on Saturday. After that, neighbors advertised giveaways, and requested books and music. Henry missed his old Gazette job, but he had launched something too. He was making news and connecting neighbors.

【答案】One possible version:
With a car’s horn beeping, Jim’s friends Tara and Bryan jumped out of the car. “How did you do?” Tara asked eagerly. “Terrible!” Jim replied in a down tone, still trying to figure out how the opposing team scored the game — winning goal just seconds before the end of the game. Bryan patted Jim’s shoulder asking, “Is winning the game the only reason why you play soccer and what really matters when playing a game?” Hearing this, Jim didn’t want to go home but decided to follow his friends and watch their game.
There came the turn for Tara and Bryan’s team to play the game. Jim watched with full attention as Tara’s team played fiercely against their opposing team. What impressed him most was that all the players in Tara’s team cooperated perfectly with unwavering resolve on their faces. Even when they were in a tie with the opponent, they stayed positive and confident. It dawned on Jim that success doesn’t always depend on the end result, but rather on how we face adversity and grow from it.

【答案】
But Emma began to cry, realizing she had no way of getting there, because she didn’t have any more cash for a taxi. The young doctor quickly noticed her distress and offered to arrange for a taxi, ensuring her that it would be paid for. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you get there safely,” he said with kindness. Emma felt a wave of relief wash over her, knowing that her husband would finally receive the medical attention he desperately needed.
Soon Emma and her husband arrived at the hospital. The doctor who had been waiting for them immediately began to examine David thoroughly. Emma watched anxiously as the doctor conducted various tests and questioned David. After a few tense moments, the doctor turned to Emma with a serious expression. “Your husband has suffered a stroke,” he said. “We’ll need to get him into surgery immediately.” Emma nodded, grateful for the doctor’s quick action and expertise. She knew that without the help of the young doctor who had intervened, her husband’s condition could have been much worse.

As the judges made their way through the gymnasium, Mei’s anxiety reached its peak. When they finally reached her table, Mei took a deep breath and began to explain the concept of “Eco-Power” once again. The lead judge, a woman with a kind smile, listened intently and asked several detailed questions about the efficiency and practical applications of her device. Mei answered with as much confidence as she could muster, her hands still trembling slightly. The judges nodded approvingly, and Mei felt a glimmer of hope as they moved on to the next project.
When the awards ceremony began, Mei sat in the audience, with her hands tightly pressed together on the lap. Her heart pounded as the announcer called out the winners for various categories. Each name that wasn’t hers felt like a weighted push against her dreams. Finally, the announcement for the “Best Innovation” category echoed through the gym. “Eco-Power by Mei!” rang out, prompting an eruption of applause. Stunned but elated, Mei rose from her seat, her earlier fears melting away, as she walked up to receive her award, knowing her hard work had paid off.
