Chad is a rabbit who believes he is a dog. He eats from dog bowls, sleeps in the dog’s bed, and follows us around the backyard like a dog. Naturally, his best friend is our dog, Jeannie.
We actually have four rabbits. Funnily enough, Jeannie loves to chase after wild rabbits if she sees one on a walk. But she never chases ours, and Chad has always been her favourite. When we let them out in the yard together, they each do their own thing at first, then Jeannie will come back and rest in the shade, and Chad will come, lie next to her and be greeted with a kiss.
All four of our rabbits take part in a Read to Rabbits program at a nearby education center for children. Kids who usually don’t want to read can’t wait to sit down with the rabbits to read them a story. One boy with special needs who rarely speaks said his first full sentence to one of our rabbits. At the end of every school year, Jeannie joins in Read to Rabbits wearing her own pair of rabbit ears.
On one occasion, their friendship had lifesaving effect. That afternoon, Chad was jumping around the grass in the backyard when my parents visited with their dog, Bradley. Since Chad’s best friend is a dog, he happily jumped over to 68-pound Bradley to say hello. But Bradley grabbed (咬住) 10-pound Chad by the face and shaking him. After seeing that, Jeannie rushed across the yard and chased Bradley away, but by the time we got to Chad, he was lying on the grass and badly hurt. Chad had a broken jaw and a low chance of survival. We treated him actively and fed him carefully for weeks, hoping he would get well soon.
As long as we sat down with Chad to feed him, Jeannie would stand next to us and wag her tail. Weeks later, Chad did recover fully, with Jeannie by his side. She was always protective and so gentle.

Travel can make us feel better. New places bring excitement and it turns out that there is a science behind —“dopamine (多巴胺) and serotonin (血清素)”. Travel experts explain (解释) that dopamine and serotonin levels go up when we travel.
Dopamine is one of the key chemicals. It can make us feel happy. When we join in activities that we enjoy, our brains will release (释放) it and it’ll give us a sense of joy and satisfaction. Serotonin is another key chemical. It is important to our mood, sleep, and diet. Our serotonin levels will drop when we get less daylight in winter. In short, the more dopamine and serotonin we have, the happier we will feel.
Here’s how it actually makes us happier:
Vitamin D can be boosted
As we know, vitamin D is naturally made by the skin when we’re in the sun. When vitamin D boosts (增强) from sunlight, it will help the production of serotonin, to improve our sleep quality, and even reduce our stress (减少压力).
Negative ions are ______ things
Negative ions (负离子) are most found in fresh air, especially near bodies of water like oceans and waterfalls, and in forests. They have been shown to increase (升高) serotonin levels, energy levels, boost immune systems (免疫系统), and reduce stress levels. If we spent time on the beach, listening to the sound of crashing waves and feeling our stress wash away, that might thank to the negative ions.
Travelling makes you social
Social interaction (社交互动) also helps the release of both dopamine and serotonin. If we try a group tour, the new experiences and activities will also boost our dopamine and serotonin levels.
Close to wildlife
The beauty of nature can have a calming effect on the mind and body, and spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress levels and promote relaxation. Watching the wonders of nature and seeing animals in their natural habit can boost dopamine and serotonin levels. And the physical activities like walking and hiking also have a mood-boosting effect.

One day, he was playing at a river bank when he saw Lip-Lip come. He suddenly got a good idea. He pretended (假装) to be hurt and unable to run fast. When Lip-Lip ran after him, he led Lip-Lip to the place where his mother stayed. When Lip-Lip got close to her, she turned Lip-Lip over and bit him until she let him go, but White Fang had a bigger problem.
Lip-Lip was the leader of the other dogs. They followed him and obeyed him. None of them would become friends with White Fang. Whenever he came near them, they attacked him.
White Fang was always alone. He was never allowed to play with the other dogs. This made him unhappy and angry. He often forgot how to behave well.
Several days later, White Fang saw a man take his mother in a small boat. He tried to follow them. He jumped into the river and swam after the boat. Another man came after White Fang in his boat. He lifted White Fang out of the water. White Fang tried to get away from the man, but the man hit him and threw him into the boat.
White Fang was now very angry because he wanted to be with his mother. He forgot how powerful men were, and he bit the man. The man was so angry that he beat White Fang again and again. The man hurt him badly.
