Jane was always getting shouted at for not being ready for class. It happened so often that she could see her teacher’s mouth open to shout at her as soon as she stepped through the door. She didn’t really blame (责怪) her teacher that much, though. She knew she hated repeating herself, so why wouldn’t her teacher?
Just once, she wanted to impress her teacher by being ready. She got her things out the night before, and then organized them carefully. She double-checked to make sure there wasn’t a single question left unanswered in her homework. Then she made sure she had read her pages in the novel she was supposed to keep up in. Things looked good.
After a late night preparing, she fell asleep, but woke up late. In the rush for the bus in the morning, she somehow forgot her backpack. Breakthrough or bad science?
It’s long been a scientific dream: to give people a special vaccine (疫苗) before birth to prevent them from getting terrible illnesses. Gene editing (基因编辑) is one way in which we could do this. But this method has also created some controversy (争议).
In an online video posted on Nov. 26, He Jiankui, a researcher at the Southern University of Science and Technology, said that he had helped to make the world’s first genetically edited babies.
The babies are twin girls who were born in November. Their father had HIV. The twins’ genes were edited in order to prevent them from being infected (感染) by the HIV virus.
He said he chose to do this because HIV is widespread in China. “I feel such a strong responsibility not only to be the first to do this, but also to set an example,” He told AP. But his actions raised many questions. Although gene editing may help to prevent disease, many people are wondering if it is safe and ethical (道德的) to use it on humans.
Some believe that gene editing could benefit HIV patients. HIV is “a major and growing public health threat (威胁),” according to Harvard Medical School genetics professor George Church. Using gene editing for HIV is “justifiable (无可厚非),” Church told AP. However, others think that gene editing is still in its experimental stages and could result in problems later in life, including the development of cancer, Julian Savulescu from the University of Oxford told BBC News. Besides, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China has worked with other departments to investigate his project. In an open letter released on Nov. 27, 140 Chinese HIV/AIDS researchers described the research as “unethical”. They questioned the need for his project.
Others fear that some wealthy people might use gene editing technology to make “designer babies”. It would give parents the ability to choose everything from their baby’s eye color to their intelligence.“You could find wealthy parents buying the latest ‘upgrades’ for their children, leading to even greater inequality than we already live with,” Marcy Darnovsky, director of the San Francisco Center for Genetics, told BBC News.
32.What do we know about He Jiankui?
A.He was the first person to edit genes.
B.He infected twins with HIV when he edited their genes.
C.He made the world’s first genetically edited babies.
D.He was the first person whose genes were edited.
33.Who agreed that gene editing could be helpful for HIV patients?
A.George Church. B.Julian Savulescu.
C.Marcy Darnovsky. D.Chinese researchers.
34.Julian Savulescu said gene editing ________.
A.can cure diseases B.may cause unexpected mutations
C.will raise ethical questions D.may lead to greater inequality
35.According to the story, we know that gene editing is ________.
A.good for everyone B.good for wealthy people
C.still controversial D.justifiable to use

About four months ago, some embroidery designers’ works were chosen to be displayed at Milan Fashion Week. Their beautiful embroidery showed the traditional artistry (工艺技术) of the Miao people. “I have never been to a foreign country, but my embroidery has,” Wang Rongbi said in excitement. Wang comes from Xiaogulong Village in Guizhou province. She is one of embroidery designers from the province.
Wang takes pride in where she comes from. In her pieces, she embroiders seals (印章) on different parts of clothes. In this way, she pays her great respect to the Siyin Miao, one branch (分支) of the Miao ethnic group. “Siyin” in Chinese means four seals.
Shi Chuanying is another Miao embroiderer from Guizhou. The 45-year-old was luckier than Wang. She had a front-row seat at the fashion week. In July, Shi received an invitation to attend Milan Fashion Week. On September 21, Shi left for Milan. She went there with two traditional costumes (服装) and ten embroidered pieces made for the catwalk.
The Miao people are happy to see the traditional costumes of their ethnic group on the international stage.
