1. Have students work in pairs to discuss what will be included in their time capsules for
2050 and fill in the following chart.
Messages: A description of the world now; current concerns about people relying too much
on technology
The object and the reason why you choose it: A smartphone. Smartphones are extremely
important for most people.
Your hopes and wishes: People will have a more balanced relationship with technology.
2. Have students finish part C on page 52. Remind them to read the tip of “Using tone and
stress appropriately” on the same page.
Possible answer
A: Let’s begin our letter with a description of the world now to help people in 2050
understand how we live. For example, we’re currently living in an exciting time full of
amazing scientific and technological discoveries.
B: Yes! We can mention some important technologies that affect our lives greatly, like the
Internet and artificial intelligence. Without them, the smartphone we use today wouldn’t be possible.
A: Good idea! We could put my old smartphone in the capsule for them to see what it

looks like and tell them more about it in the letter.
B: They’ll be impressed for sure! Smartphones allow us to do many things from anywhere
and at any time: video calling, surfing the Internet, shopping online, and finding our ways
with virtual directions.
A: Exactly! I think they’ll be interested to know how smartphones make our lives more
convenient and also how advanced they are in our time, especially as a relatively new
invention. I wonder if people of the future will still be using smartphones. What do you
think?
B: Perhaps. Maybe they’ll use some type of smart implant technology. That would be amazing!
A: It would be. However, I think we should also mention our current concerns about people
relying too much on technology.
B: Right. Then we can conclude our letter with our hopes for the future. We hope that
people will have a more balanced relationship with technology.
3. Have students finish the letter individually. They can refer to “Planning your writing” in
part D on page 52 to help their writing in terms of the structure and writing techniques.
Dear friends from the future,
Greetings from the past! We are currently living in an exciting time that is full of amazing
discoveries, especially in science and technology. Some especially important technologies
that we use today are the Internet and artificial intelligence, without which the smartphone
would not be possible. I have placed a typical smartphone in the time capsule for you to see.
In the future, I hope that you will have a more balanced life with technology. I sometimes
think that we rely too much on it. While I do not want to lose the advantages smartphones
and other technologies bring, it would be nice for people to spend a bit less time using
them. That is all for now! I hope you enjoyed seeing what life is like in my time!
