One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States. I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive (敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description (描述) “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry. In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience. However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear. After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words. By Jack 4. Jack brought the couple their food very fast because _______. A. the manager asked him to do so B. he respected the elderly C. the couple wanted him to do so D. he wanted more pay 5. In Jack’s hometown, _______. A. people dislike being called “old” B. people are proud of being old C. many people reach the age of seventy or eighty D. the elderly are the first to get food in restaurants 6. After this experience, Jack _______. A. lost his job in the restaurant B. made friends with the couple C. no longer respected the elderly D. changed his way with older people 7. Which of the following is TRUE? A. The more Jack explained, the angrier the couple got. B. Jack wanted to show his feelings through words after his experience. C. The manager went back to the table and apologized to the couple. D. From this experience, Jack learned more about American culture. B 5. B 6. D 7. 由第二段中的“I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly.”(我告诉她,我确保他们很快得到食物,因为我总是尊重老人。) 由第三段中的“In my village in China, people are proud of being old.”(在我们中国的村子里,人们都以年老为荣。) 由最后一段中的“After that, I changed the way I had been with older people.”(从那以后,我改变了以前和老年人相处的方式。) 由第二段中的“My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive (敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description (描述) “old”.”(我的经理碰巧听到了我的话,他把我拉到一边,给我讲了很长一段时间,说美国人是多么敏感,他们多么讨厌“老”这个词。) C Delivering medical supplies to hard-to-reach places has been an issue for years. Worldwide, more than two billion people lack access to essential life-saving supplies, such as blood and vaccines(疫苗). In the African nation of Rwanda, for example, several remote health clinics do not have sufficient quantities of blood and other healthcare products. A company called Zipline is trying to address this problem. It uses drones(无人机)to transport medical supplies around Rwanda. A drone can now deliver medicine in 30 minutes. Drones are also assisting emergency organizations after natural disasters. In 2015, for example, a powerful hurricane destroyed thousands of buildings in the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. Around 75,000 people lost their homes, and at least 15 died. After the storm, drones photographed the damage. These surveys helped emergency workers assess the situation quickly and answer important questions: Which areas were hardest hit? Were crops damaged? What roads were affected? Drones are also helping to protect wildlife populations in parts of Africa and Asia. Every year, poachers(偷猎者) kill thousands of elephants, rhinos, and other endangered animals. To stop them; the environmental organization World Wildlife Fund is using drones to find where poachers are hiding and if they are carrying weapons. Equipped with infrared video cameras, drones can easily identify people and animals at night. These drones are not only helpful, they are affordable. As well as finding poachers, drones can be used to track animals. Scientists at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU)plan to employ drones for an ambitious conservation project: documenting the world's wildlife. The long-term project will start with scientific surveys of animal populations. And animal species can then be identified using special software. Ironically(讽刺地), a tool originally created for military use is increasingly being used to save lives instead of taking then. Drones have the potential to provide solutions that will benefit both humans and animals. 8. What does the text focus on? A. Importance of saving lives. B Development of drones. C. Applications of drones. D. Ways to protect animals. 9. What can drones be used for according to Paragraph 2? A. Helping predict disasters. B. Providing data for evaluation. C. Organizing emergency workers. D. Reporting local weather. 10. What do the scientists at LJMU intend to do? A. Track poachers. B. Design new practical drones. C. Record wild animals in detail. D. Develop an assessing software. 11. What can be inferred about drones? A. They need to be fitted with video cameras. B. They are unavailable to ordinary people. C. They should be limited to military use. D. They have a promising prospect. 【答案】8 C 9. B 10. C 11. 通读全文,特别是根据第一段“A company called Zipline is trying to address this problem. It uses drones(无人机)to transport medical supplies around Rwanda.”(一家名为Zipline的公司正试图解决难以向偏远地区运送医疗用品这个问题。它使用无人机在卢旺达各地运送医疗用品)可知,文章主要讲的是无人机的应用。故选C。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“After the storm, drones photographed the damage. These surveys helped emergency workers assess the situation quickly and answer important questions: Which areas were hardest hit? Were crops damaged? What roads were affected?”(风暴过后,无人机拍下了损坏的照片。 根据倒数第二段“Scientists at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU)plan to employ drones for an ambitious conservation project: documenting the world's wildlife. ”(利物浦约翰摩尔斯大学的科学家们计划将无人机用于一个雄心勃勃的保护项目:记录世界上的野生动物)可知,利物浦约翰摩尔斯大学的科学家们计划用无人机详细记录野生动物。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句“Drones have the potential to provide solutions that will benefit both humans and animals.”(无人机有可能提供造福人类和动物的解决方案)可知,无人机有很好的前景。故选D。 D Back in Brisbane, Australia, for the Christmas break, I found myself in a public transport dead zone. Bikeless, 7 kilometers from where I was meeting friends and unwilling to get a taxi, I decided to borrow an electric scooter. The trip took far longer than it would have by bike, mainly because of a major spill halfway there. A rock, hit at speed, is a terrible thing: weeks later, I still had the red knees of a primary schooler. E-scooters have appeared in Brisbane like a rash. In the UK, they are legal only on private land, but the Department for Transport is discussing how to regulate them on public roads and pathways, with the potential for legalisation later this year. Other cities that have e-scooter rental programs have had teething problems. In Paris, mayor Anne Hidalgo described the situation last year as messy. She has announced that the city is reducing its number of e-scooters to 15,000 and plans to create laws banning them from pavements (人行道). France has put into force laws limiting e-scooter speeds to 25 kilometres per hour. Similar to dockless (无桩的) hire bicycles, e-scooters are parked on pavements and people leave them up trees or throw them into rivers. Rough handling shortens their lifetime, which is bad for both profitability and the environment. Analysis suggests that the average e-scooter’s lifetime is just three months. I think e-scooters are an essential part of the effort to make city transport greener. They are seen as a solution to the “last mile” problem — a potential way to reduce transport jam by rapidly getting someone to their final destination. Cars can take up 28 times the space of a person riding a bicycle. As far as the environmental effect goes, recent research suggests that e-scooters are not as green as walking or cycling, but they are still better than cars. And despite numerous reports of serious accidents, scooting is about as safe as cycling. Stephen Gossling at Lund University in Sweden has suggested we build car-free “micromobility” streets, where cyclists, pedestrians (行人) and e-scooters could share the road. He thinks this will reduce accident risks and invite more vulnerable (易受伤害的) traffic participants, such as children, to become active transport users. If more e-scooters mean fewer cars on roads, an improvement in local air quality is also a likely outcome. When 20 kilometers of roads in central London closed for World Car-Free Day last September, a temporary air quality monitor in Regent Street reportedly registered a 60% drop in nitrogen dioxide. 12. What does the underlined part “a major spill” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. A serious fall. B. A sudden illness. C. A legal defense. D. A terrible breakdown. 13. What do we know about e-scooters in Paris? A. They are illegal on pavements. B. They are already out of fashion. C. They are facing more restrictions. D. They are more common on private land. 14. What is the author’s opinion of e-scooters? A. They are not as safe as cycling. B. They stand up to rough handling. C. They are as green as cycling or walking. D. They play a big role in the “last mile” problem. 15. What is Stephen Gossling’s suggestion? A. To set up more care-free days. B. To invite more cyclists to use e-scooters. C. To get vulnerable pedestrians off the road. D. To separate cars from e-scooters on the road. A 13. C 14. D 15. 根据文章第一段“A rock, hit at speed, is a terrible thing: weeks later, I still had the red knees of a primary schooler.” 故选A。 根据文章第三段“In Paris, mayor Anne Hidalgo described the situation last year as messy. She has announced that the city is reducing its number of e-scooters to 15,000 and plans to create laws banning them from pavements (人行道). France has put into force laws limiting e-scooter speeds to 25 kilometres per hour.” 根据文章第五段“I think e-scooters are an essential part of the effort to make city transport greener. They are seen as a solution to the “last mile” problem — a potential way to reduce transport jam by rapidly getting someone to their final destination.” 根据文章倒数第二段“Stephen Gossling at Lund University in Sweden has suggested we build car-free “micro mobility” streets, where cyclists, pedestrians (行人) and e-scooters could share the road.” Choosing the Right Path to Be a“Better”Person Life is a constant exercise in self-improvement.In the rush to achieve, the idea of being“better”can become lost sometimes. You may always wonder how to improve yourself and fulfill your dreams in an easier way. ___16___ Explore your talents. You may always wonder how to improve yourself and fulfill your dreams in an easier way. 故选A。 If you feel your job isn’t meaningful,or isn’t in line with your values, consider finding another job. Because of that,we may react slowly to our own positive experiences and interactions with others,可知人类能够快速适应积极的事情,故选D。 如一些表示转折的连词,but,However,yet,though,nevertheless等,另外还有一些表示并列关系的连词如and,also,as well as,neither nor, either or,not only...but also,on one hand....on the other hand等。 One day, my son Ryan said, ‌“I’m going to keep working until everyone in Africa has clean water.” I thought, oh, boy! Online friendships are a wonderful part of many people’s lives, but as far as I’m concerned, Internet friends cannot be considered real friends. While it may be easy to communicate with people online, the Internet doesn’t provide the same level of personal interaction and emotional connection. Additionally, the anonymity of the Internet can result in difficulties in establishing trust, which makes it difficult to determine the true intentions of an Internet friend. Moreover, though Internet friends seem to keep you company, they can’t provide you with the real support. Therefore, I think people should make efforts to form real-life friendships rather than online friendships. 词汇积累 在我看来:as far as I’m concerned→ in my opinion 此外:additionally→ what’s more 带来:result in→ lead to/bring about 努力做某事:make efforts to do→ try one’s best to 2. Online friendships are a wonderful part of many people’s lives, but as far as I’m concerned, Internet friends cannot be considered real friends. Though online friendships are a wonderful part of many people’s lives, yet as far as I’m concerned, Internet friends cannot be considered real friends. 1】While it may be easy to communicate with people online, the Internet doesn’t provide the same level of personal interaction and emotional connection.(运用了while引导的状语从句) 【高分句型2】Additionally, the anonymity of the Internet can result in difficulties in establishing trust, which makes it difficult to determine the true intentions of an Internet friend(运用了which引导的非限制性定语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 52. Years ago, back in the middle 2010s, I moved to a hillside house and drove down to work every morning at about eight o’clock and came home at around five thirty. Each time I drove by, I would see a young boy at about age 15 and a large dog walking along the road. When cars would pass him on the other side, he made eye contact and waved with a toothy smile. I saw him almost every day, walking along the road and waving at cars. Amazing? On a rainy day, I saw him, along with his dog, sitting at the roadside. I stopped my car and got out to ask what had happened to him. “Nothing. I just want to take a break,” the boy responded. I then asked if he could need a ride. The young boy, Kevin, said, “I’m not really going anywhere, just walking, thank you anyway, sir.” I used to enjoy walking in the countryside myself, so I thought it wasn’t too odd. “In case of some emergency, or if you ever need a ride or help,” I told Kevin, “flag me down and I’ll do whatever I can.” Kevin thanked me and went on his way. Over the following days, each time we met, I would stop for a while and have a quick talk with Kevin, and his sweet dog Randy. One afternoon, I suddenly felt a voice inside my mind: “Go back home now!” There was still one hour for work. But I asked for an early leave and drove back faster than usual. Again, I saw Kevin walking along the road. But this time he didn’t have his usual smile and was pacing rather than walking. When he saw my car, he violently flagged me down. As I got closer, I could see he was crying. “What’s wrong, Kevin?” I asked. “We were just walking but Randy somehow dropped,” Kevin said in tears. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As I drove to the animal hospital, Kevin sat in the back and kept talking to the dog. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】“We were just walking but Randy somehow dropped,” Kevin said in tears. “Where is it now?” I asked. “Just at my house,” he answered. We quickly got into the car and drove to his house. It was a small old farmhouse. As we approached, I saw Randy just lying outside the doorway. We hurried to have a close look at it. “He’s still alive!” Kevin cried, “We need a vet!” We two quickly carried Randy into the car. As I drove to the animal hospital, Kevin sat in the back and kept talking to the dog. Luckily, Randy was saved in time. “Randy! You’ve come back to me!” Kevin said in a choked voice. Then he turned to me and said gratefully “If you hadn’t come earlier, Randy would have gone! Thank you very much...” Tears welled up in his eyes. “It’s nothing, Kevin.” I patted him on the shoulder. Just at that moment, I realized: There is always a whispered urging in our heart and mind to do something good. 词汇激活 行为类 ①开车前往:drive to/head for...in a car ②救:save/rescue ③涌出:well up/gush 情绪类 ①感激:gratefully/thankfully ②哭:tears well up/burst into laughter 【点睛】[高分句型1] As we approached, I saw Randy just lying outside the doorway. B When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guang Dong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. C Delivering medical supplies to hard-to-reach places has been an issue for years. B. Development of drones. C. Choosing the Right Path to Be a“Better”Person Life is a constant exercise in self-improvement.In the rush to achieve, the idea of being“better”can become lost sometimes. You may always wonder how to improve yourself and fulfill your dreams in an easier way. ___16___ Explore your talents. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
