Dear Bob,
You asked me about the Awakening of Insects(惊蛰). Now let me tell you something about it.
As the third one of the 24 Chinese solar terms(二十四节气)in the lunar year, the Awakening of Insects means the fact that spring thunder awakens the animals sleeping in winter, and that the earth begins to come back to life.
Just as the old Chinese saying “Once the Awakening of Insects comes, spring ploughing(耕犁)never rests” says, it is the major time for spring farming activities. During this time, most parts of China get warmer and warmer, with the temperatures above 10℃. The days get longer and there is a marked increase(增加)in sunshine. It is good for farming.
People like going fishing during this time. Fishing can make people relaxed, especially for people living in the city. Driving to the countryside, fishing in a lake, bathing in the sunlight and enjoying the singing of birds make for a perfect weekend in spring.
Eating pears around the Awakening of Insects is a widely-practiced custom in China. As the weather gets warmer and the air becomes dry, people feel their mouths are dry, which can cause colds or coughs. A pear is sweet, juicy and cold. And it is good for people’s health.

The 14th China Airshow was held from November 8th to 13th in Zhuhai. More than 42 countries took part in the show, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and many other countries. Among the different models of airplanes, the J-20 Drone (无人机) took many people’s breath away.
The drone is one of the greatest inventions in recent years. A drone is light and portable, which makes it possible to reach high places in a very short time and be put in a backpack easily.
Some small drones are widely used for taking photos and putting on light shows. Other larger drones are used to carry things to far places in a smart way. They can give you some advice on how to solve the problems or cool you down. What’s more, try to learn the ways to relax. Scientists say climate (气候) change has something to do with American birds. A study found that 52 of the most common kinds of birds in the USA have become smaller in size in the past 38 years.
This change in size follows a rule called Bergmann’s Rule. The rule says that animals in colder areas are usually larger than those in warmer areas. That’s because larger animals are able to keep warmer.
As the climate changes, especially facing rising temperatures, ________. Some of them become smaller in size. Scientists studied over 70,000 kinds of birds. They found that some birds in North America were becoming smaller in size. Studies on fish also show the identical thing. Fish become smaller in size too.
What does this mean? First, climate change is happening faster than ever before, so animals may not be able to change fast enough. Besides, when an animal becomes smaller, other things will change. When an animal’s body becomes smaller, it may not be able to produce as many little baby animals as before— this may change the number of the population.

School backpacks have been a hot topic in China recently. Some Chinese parents buy hard cover school back-packs from Japan, although they can be as expensive as 5, 000 yuan, reports Chinese newspaper Urban Express. These backpacks are popular because the hard cover helps hold books in place. This can help kids keep their balance and protect their spines(脊柱). But in fact, the bags can hardly fit in the students’ desks.
A good backpack is important for children’s health. “It can relieve(减轻pressure from the shoulders,” says Dr. Rob Danoff from the US. He also says students need a backpack that’s made for the child’s size. Cushioned(加垫的)backs and shoulder straps(带子)will help them keep the pain away.
However, the biggest problem for school backpacks is that they are too heavy, noted Hou Weiguang, a doctor in Chengdu. In China, students have many textbooks and exercise books. “The weight makes many kids suffer from side-bending(侧弯的)spines,” Hou said. He suggests that backpack should be no more than 15 percent of a child’s body weight to avoid pain or injury. That means if a student weighs 50 kg, the backpack should be less than 7.5 kg.
Parents need to make sure their kids only carry what they need. Schools and governments need to help too, added Zheng Yongshun, an education official from Hong Kong.
He said schools should offer locker(储物柜)space and shared books so kids can carry fewer books.

Health is very important to everyone. Different people have their own ways to keep fit. A lot of people like running on the treadmills (跑步机). But it is not a good way to make you strong and healthy. Here are some reasons why you should run outdoors but not on the treadmills.
It costs you a lot of money to buy a treadmill. You can run outdoors, and it costs you nothing! Walk outside and the whole world is your treadmill. If you don’t mind getting a little dirty, outdoor activities will help you.
Treadmills can become boring. You are limited (被限制) to what’s in front of you. Running and exercising outside provides a beautiful scenery (风景). Studies show that just looking at photos of nature can lower blood pressure (降低血压), so imagine what running through it will do. The fresh air and the unpolluted nature will also make you run more easily.
You burn (燃烧) more calories running outside than you do on a treadmill, because you have to work harder in order to move your body. When you run on a treadmill, you only move your legs. But when exercising outside, you must move your legs and your hands and so on.
Why not go for a run outdoors? Come on!

Everyone has worries (担心). However, too many worries can make you unhealthy. So how do you get out of your worries? Sitting there worrying is meaningless and it can’t solve (解决) your problems, either.
Grades at school are often a top worry for kids. If you worry most about grades, try to ask yourself these questions.
●Why are grades important? What do grades mean (意味) to me?
●How do I get ready for class? Do I go over (复习) my notes when there isn’t a text?
●Do I have a good learning environment (环境)?
●Do I try different ways of studying?
If your worries are about a fight with your friend, you might write down what you could do. Write a letter to him or her, invite him or her to watch a basketball game, apologize to him or her and so on.
