一、阅读理解
Passage1.How did the ant steal the lion’s dinner? This isn’t the beginning of one of Aesop’s Fables. It’s the finding of a new study about ants and lions.
The whistling-thorn tree is a common sight on the plains of the east African grassland. Each tree is home to native acacia ants, which shelter inside the spines and drink juice from the tree. In return, when an elephant tries to eat the tree, ants climb up inside its nose and bite from the inside out. This has allowed the trees and the ants to grow well.
The big-headed ants arrived in this area between 2002 and 2005. They kill local acacia ants wherever they find them, robbing local whistling-thorn trees of their brave defenders against hungry elephants. Without ants to bite them, the elephants tear up the thorn trees, opening up the grassland, which makes it harder for lions to catch their preferred zebra meals.
In the new study, wildlife ecologist Jake Goheen and his colleagues could have used drones or satellite images to study tree cover, but “we don’t have that kind of money,” Goheen says. Instead, the researchers tracked their collared lions, and then got down on hands and knees near the lions’ recent kills, using a range finder to measure the openness of the area. Areas with big-headed ants, the team showed, had 2.67 times higher visibility than areas without — meaning that lions could see farther, but so could their prey.
Over the three years of the study, zebra dinners decreased from 67 percent to 42 percent of lion kills. But the lions didn’t go hungry. Instead, they went for beef. Buffalo kills increased from zero to 42 percent of kills over the study period. “It’s a risky diet,” Goheen says. “Buffalo are big and feisty, and lions hunting buffalo are more likely to be injured.”
“The study shows that the disruption (干扰) can have serious effects on other species in the community,” says Goheen. “Those effects can be unexpected and indirect. Changes could also have an impact on food webs in other ecosystems.”
1.What is the relationship between acacia ants and whistling-thorn trees like?
A.Win-win. B.Inharmonious. C.Competitive. D.Independent.
2.What do we know about the study in paragraph 4?
A.It is worthy but indirect. B.It is specific but unreliable.
C.It is expensive but effective. D.It is demanding but economical.
3.What does the underlined word “feisty” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Sharp. B.Tiresome. C.Wild. D.Inactive.
4.What phenomenon does Goheen describe in the last paragraph?
A.The observer effect. B.The butterfly effect.
C.The bystander effect. D.The greenhouse effect.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.C 4.B
根据文章第二段“Each tree is home to native acacia ants, which shelter inside the spines and drink juice from the tree. In return, when an elephant tries to eat the tree, ants climb up inside its nose and bite from the inside out. This has allowed the trees and the ants to grow well.(每棵树上都住着本地的金合欢蚁,它们躲在刺里,喝着树的汁液。作为回报,当大象试图吃树时,蚂蚁会爬进大象的鼻子里,从里向外咬。这使得树和蚂蚁都能很好地生长)”可知,哨刺金合欢树为蚂蚁提供住所及饮食上的庇护,而金合欢蚂蚁则保护哨刺金合欢树免受大象的侵害。由此可知,金合欢蚂蚁和哨刺金合欢树在互助的情况下达到双赢。故选A。
2.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“In the new study, wildlife ecologist Jake Goheen and his colleagues could have used drones or satellite images to study tree cover, but “we don’t have that kind of money,” Goheen says. Instead, the researchers tracked their collared lions, and then got down on hands and knees near the lions’ recent kills, using a range finder to measure the openness of the area.(在这项新研究中,野生生态学家Jake Goheen和他的同事们本可以使用无人机或卫星图像来研究树冠覆盖情况,但Goheen说:“我们没有那么多钱。”相反,研究人员先追踪了佩戴项圈的狮子,然后匍匐在狮子最近捕杀猎物处的附近,使用测距仪测量该区域的开阔程度)”可知,研究团队采用了既经济又要求精细操作的方法来研究。故选D。
3.词句猜测题。根据上文“It’s a risky diet(这是一种有风险的饮食)”和下文“and lions hunting buffalo are more likely to be injured.(而捕猎水牛的狮子更容易受伤)”可知,狮子捕猎水牛时容易受伤。
根据文章最后一段““The study shows that the disruption (干扰) can have serious effects on other species in the community,” says Goheen. “Those effects can be unexpected and indirect. Changes could also have an impact on food webs in other ecosystems.”(“研究表明,这种干扰会对群落中的其他物种产生严重影响,”戈欣(Goheen)说,“这些影响可能是意想不到的,也是间接的。这些变化还可能对其他生态系统的食物网产生影响。”)”可知,Goheen描述的是一个小变化可能引发一系列连锁反应的现象,即B选项“The butterfly effect(蝴蝶效应)”。故选B。
Passage2.A fin whale body that was washed ashore at San Diego’s Pacific Beach was discovered to have many bite marks from killer whales, which could have contributed to its death, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). At first, NOAA researchers deemed the marks might be from sharks, but further analysis (分析) by experts showed that these were actually rake (耙子) marks, an unusual feature of killer whales, as stated by NOAA spokesperson Michael Milstein.
While it is possible that killer whales played a role in the fin whale’s death, NOAA has not confirmed that they were the definitive cause. Milstein noted that there are documented instances where killer whales have chased fin whales, causing them to beach themselves in attempts to escape. This suggests that killer whales could have influenced the whale’s fate (命运), but there is no certainty that they were the direct cause of death.
Additionally, NOAA reported sightings of a group of about a dozen killer whales along the Southern California coast, including San Diego. Boaters in the area filmed footage of a group of killer whales actively chasing and likely feeding on dolphins near Torrey Pines. This indicates that killer whales are currently active in the area and may take part in various predatory (捕食性的) behaviors.
The fin whale’s body was discovered on December 10. Lifeguards spent the entire day trying to drag the whale back out to sea, but despite their efforts, the body returned to shore at least once. The whale was observed bleeding from its side, and attempts to pull it away using a small boat connected to its tail were unsuccessful. Fin whales, which are the second-largest whale species on Earth after blue whales, are considered endangered and relatively few in number. These whales can weigh up to 100,000 pounds. NOAA highly values public reports regarding stranded (搁浅的) or injured sea animals. NOAA extremely appreciates such reports and encourages the public to provide information on how to report these incidents. NOAA supposes that it is time for all to work together.
1.What does the underlined word “deemed” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Believed. B.Persuaded. C.Complained. D.Forgot.
2.What could killer whales do to cause the possible death of the fin whale?
A.Chase it until it beached itself. B.Hit it unexpectedly.
C.Attack it in a group. D.Drag it to the shore.
3.What can we know about killer whales from paragraph 3?
A.Their presence is causing concern for locals. B.They are a new threat to the local ecosystem.
C.They may take part in predatory behaviors. D.They disappear quickly near Torrey Pines.
4.What is NOAA’s attitude towards public reports?
A.Unclear. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Worried.
【答案】1.A 2.A 3.C 4.C

故选A。
2.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Milstein noted that there are documented instances where killer whales have chased fin whales, causing them to beach themselves in attempts to escape.( Milstein指出,有记录显示,虎鲸曾追逐长须鲸,导致长须鲸为逃避而搁浅)”可知,虎鲸可能一直追逐长须鲸直到它搁浅,从而可能导致其死亡。故选A。
3.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Boaters in the area filmed footage of a group of killer whales actively chasing and likely feeding on dolphins near Torrey Pines. This indicates that killer whales are currently active in the area and may take part in various predatory (捕食性的) behaviors.(该地区的划船者拍摄到一群虎鲸在托利松附近积极追逐并可能以海豚为食的画面。这表明虎鲸目前在该地区很活跃,可能参与了各种掠食行为)”可知,虎鲸可能参与掠夺性行为。故选C。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段“NOAA highly values public reports regarding stranded (搁浅的) or injured sea animals. NOAA extremely appreciates such reports and encourages the public to provide information on how to report these incidents. NOAA supposes that it is time for all to work together.(NOAA非常重视公众关于搁浅或受伤海洋动物的报告。NOAA对这类报告表示高度赞赏,并鼓励公众提供有关如何报告这些事件的信息。NOAA认为,现在是时候让大家携手合作了)”可推测,NOAA对公众报告是持支持态度的。故选C。

Passage4.I woke at 4 am. to a pitch-black hostel room, my eight roommates all still sound asleep at the early hour. I tiptoed out to change, stuffed a cheese roll in my mouth, and dragged the suitcase holding a year of my life to the Kaikoura dolphin-watching tour office. With more adrenaline (肾上腺素) than I had when jumping out of a plane, I put on my flippers (脚蹼) quickly and got ready for my diving.
The moment we dove off the water, I was fully awake. No amount of coffee, tea, or sugar has ever given me such an intense wake-up. It turns out, the ocean is freezing at 5 am., before the sun has risen and in early-spring. Don’t be scared off by the temperature, though, because 5 am. is when the dolphins are most playful! For five seconds, I struggled to breathe through the cold. Then, the wetsuit flooded with water and I was warm.
A moment later, I was face to face with a wild dusky dolphin, one of the smallest species of dolphin in the world! As I swam alongside it awkwardly, the dolphin gracefully spun on the surface while creating elegant spirals beneath me. I hummed strange noises which were similar to whales’ to draw the attention of more members, including a tiny baby dolphin no bigger than my calf. But he seemed most interested in the strange-looking thing that kept getting trapped in her own “flippers”.
The sun rose, warming my back as I continued to struggle among the most elegant animals in the ocean. The practice of swimming with wild dolphins is banned in the North Island, where the species of Hector’s dolphins are in decline. But in Kaikoura, the practice is thriving and actually helping to restore the dolphin populations. By supporting this adventurous experience, you’re supporting dolphin conservation.

Passage6.A new outdoor fabric, called LumiWeave, stores energy by day and then lights up at night. Being tested in a city park, this totally “cool” fabric has attracted interest for its many urban uses.
This is the brainchild of Anai Green, an industrial and product designer. She designed a shading fabric that carries solar photovoltaic cells. The cells collect sunlight and store the energy in strips with LEDs. This allows the fabric to shade public space by day. When night falls, these strips light up. “We use LumiWeave to light public space without carbon emissions, making the lighting all-natural. And we spread light in the areas we want to brighten only,” said Green.
The system was designed to adapt to all weather conditions and can continue to provide lighting even after three days without sunlight. In addition, you simply put LumiWeave up and the sun will do the work. This in itself saves 50 percent of the cost of building standard lighting, and it saves 100 percent on the electricity bills. This is great news for cities. Tel Aviv, Green’s hometown, is trying out LumiWeave in AtidimPark.
The mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai, is making efforts to deal with climate change. “LumiWeave will turn out to be a groundbreaking project,” said Huldai. The mayor added that LumiWeave is especially important as it solves the issue of shading urban areas and uses clean energy. The new fabric can be fixed at the top of bike paths, in children’s parks and in walking areas. Many of the country’s major cities are planning to choose LumiWeave. As there is also use for the fabric in outdoor sitting areas of restaurants and hotels, Green has developed a LumiWeave parasol (遮阳伞). “We are now developing the possibility of controlling it from the phone - we’re creating an application,” said Green. “LumiWeave provides an ideal solution for urban parks and gardens. We hope that it will soon be lighting up night skies around the world.”
1.How does the new outdoor fabric work?
A.By turning household waste into clean energy.
B.By providing shade and energy in an eco-friendly way.
C.By changing its temperatures according to the weather.
D.By using photovoltaic cells to promote the plant growth.
2.Which can be the feature of LumiWeave?
A.It is very convenient to use. B.It takes up a lot of public space.
C.It’s equipped with self-repair materials. D.It can tell the weather conditions faster.
3.What is Ron Huldai’s attitude towards LumiWeave?
A.Intolerant. B.Skeptical. C.Dismissive. D.Supportive.
4.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.LumiWeave may bring about safety concerns.
B.LumiWeave is replaced by more intelligent devices.
C.LumiWeave is being further developed for wider use.
D.LumiWeave may speed up the process of urbanization.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 4.C

Passage7.The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has hosted the online competition since 2019 where the agency posts photos of bats online, and then asks people to vote for the cutest one to raise awareness about the animal’s ecological importance.
The first round of voting began Thursday and a Townsend’s big-eared bat named “Sir Flaps-A-Lot” from Utah competed against a hoary bat named “Hoary Potter” from Oregon.
Both the big-eared bat and the hoary bat have been included on a list of species needing conservation attention. Emma Busk, the BLM wildlife technician, said bats around the world play a key role in the environment by eating insects and pollinating(授粉) flowers and fruits. But they’re increasingly facing the threats of habitat loss, disease and light pollution, and are often regarded as scary disease carriers.
“There’s a lot of fear and misconceptions around bats,” Busk said, noting that people often associate rabies(狂犬病) with the animal. “But less than 1% of all bat populations actually carry rabies, and the bat-to-human disease spread is actually really low.”

Passage8.News about natural disaster, including volcanoes, storms and earthquakes, is updated daily. Besides, global warming is causing heat waves to become more frequent, pushing the limits of human survival in the hottest regions on Earth. Recent record-breaking temperatures in various parts of the world have highlighted the dangers caused by extreme heat and throw light on the challenges that lie ahead.
When faced with extreme heat, the human body depends on its natural cooling mechanisms (机制) to keep a safe temperature. However, very high heat overpowers these mechanisms, putting human lives in danger. Research shows that the body’s ability to cool through sweating begins to decrease at 35℃. Being in such conditions can put pressure on the heart and cause body temperatures to rise uncontrollably, creating the greatest danger to older people and those with diseases.
Recently, high temperatures have broken records across the globe. China experienced a historic high of nearly 126°F. America reached 128°F. The Middle East hit 152°F, nearing the limit of what humans can stand.
These extreme heat events offer a look at the future, as global warming continues to push temperatures. The frequency of dangerously high temperatures has more than doubled since 1979, according to research in 2020.
The seriousness and widespread nature of ongoing heat waves highlight that climate change is a global problem with far-reaching effects. Human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels (化石燃料), have greatly contributed to the rise in heat-trapping greenhouse gases, leading to more heat waves and other extreme weather events. It is high time to cut down on greenhouse gases and choose cleaner renewable energy sources. International cooperation and leadership are necessary to reduce the effect of climate change on our planet and protect the well-being of future generations.

Passage3.At events around the world, fireworks shows are being replaced with large numbers of drones that create animated (栩栩如生的) images in the night sky. Why are drone shows 1 ? Supporters claim fireworks are bad for people, animals and the environment and that it’s time for a change. Bill Bateman, a professor of life sciences, 2 the “highly damaging” impacts of fireworks - scaring birds from nests, disturbing other animals with their sudden light and noise, and even affecting animal breeding. Part of the issue results from the startle 3 , a whole-body reaction that causes the muscles to swiftly contract, the eyes to blink (眨眼), and the pulse to 4 . Such reactions help animals and humans respond to danger, make them more alert and help them 5 their weakest parts. Bateman explains that the sounds and flashes of light associated with the explosions lead to the startle response in animals, causing their suffering and even deaths. Young cranes (鹤), for example, have been recorded leaping from their 6 in response to loud noises even though they cannot fly.
Humans experience the startle response, too. How 7 one is startled can depend on mental health conditions and genetic factors. In fact, an overactive startle response is used to diagnose post-traumatic 8 disorder (PTSD).
There are also plenty of other health reasons to avoid fireworks. The U.S. recorded 9,700 injuries and eight deaths from fireworks in 2023 alone-most due to misuse. Though 9 use of fireworks is often the major contributor, around 18% of all fireworks on the market in 2023 didn’t meet safety standards, putting even experienced operators at risk.
Those dangers are even greater in an age of climate change and warming world. Heat waves, combined with more 10 and widespread droughts, are making things worse. And scientists predict more of the same as the world warms. Add fireworks to the 11 , and it’s a perfect recipe for wildfires. Fireworks 12 other problems, releasing large amounts of pollutants into the air, soil and water. These impacts contribute to respiratory (呼吸的) diseases and other health conditions.
The reasons to cancel fireworks displays seem clear, but are drone shows the solution? These displays still create light pollution, and involve the production of greenhouse gases. 13 , drones can collide (相撞) with wildlife in the air.
Research on drones’ environmental and wildlife impacts is still in its 14 . But for now, at least, the shows seem to be more environmentally friendly. The fact that drones can be reused also makes them a more 15 alternative to traditional fireworks.

D.Forgot.

A.Unclear. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Worried.
Passage3.Firstly, Mohiuddin was looking at global environmental problems with the hope of finding one that his entrepreneurial (企业家的) spirit could deal with. He would finally focus on plastic use, the overreliance on it in society, and the dangers of plastic pollution in the form of microplastic particles (颗粒). In particular, he wanted to find a replacement to one of the most common plastic products used today: the plastic shopping bag.
According to The Better India, he started studying a biodegradable polymer (生物可降解聚合物) that was first formed and researched in the 1980s called PBAT. At the time, it was made with corn and potatoes. After identifying a suitable class of machinery to produce the PBAT bags in Gujarat, his speech on PBAT received nearly $100,000 in seed funding that allowed him to start the project.
“I tried to balance both my studies and the operations of the company — from collecting raw material, helping workers to produce bags, to delivering the products in the market,” Mohiuddin told The Better India. “I used to sleep in a corner in the factory.” Overcoming bankruptcy (破产), university studies, and long-term unfinished orders, Mohiuddin’s startup company finally started to make profits, and today produces almost 500,000 bags per year, with a total revenue of $180,000.
“I am glad I am able to contribute my part. Not having a normal college life can be tiring sometimes, but in the end, it is all worth it. I feel content when I go back to sleep. But much more needs to be done to make India plastic-free, and I will continue to strive for it,” he adds.

Passage5.For eight years, Mr. Baker’s business, Amazonex Lumber Co. sold rare tropical wood from the Amazon to customers in America. So, he could spend a lot of time in the rainforest. Mr. Baker told himself that selective harvest was managing the resource.
But on his birding outings, he began to notice that the forest had grown quieter and there were more and more cleared areas. Once, he saw an illegal type of wood labeled with the name of a type of wood legal to export. “It took me eight years to realize that selectively harvest and manage the forest made no sense.” he says.“I couldn’t do it anymore.”
Therefore, Mr. Baker founded an ecotourism company that takes tourists along Brazil’s Rio Negro. With the trips, he aims to foster appreciation and awareness of managing the rainforest among global citizens.
The Amazon rainforest covers more than 2.3 million square miles and is the biggest carbon store in the world, according to Giordane Martins, a biologist. Forty percent of Brazil’s land lies in the Amazon, but roughly twenty percent of it is already deforested. Mr. Baker regrets his contributing to this, but his tour company might compensate for it.
The rate of deforestation in Brazil is on the rise after falling for years, but Mr. Baker remains optimistic.“Our role is to educate,”Mark says.“Some tourists acquire nature sensibility on our tours. One of the goals of ecotourism is to share the economic benefits of travel. The other is to help promote conservation, to generate income and help protect the forest. We’ve seen that happen,”he says. “I wish we could say we saved the rainforest. We haven’t. But we have had an impact.”

Busk is rooting for “Hoary Potter” in the hope that an Oregon bat will win the beauty contest for a third time. Last year, “William ShakespEAR”, a female Townsend’s big-eared bat from southern Oregon whom Busk also photographed, claimed the crown. And in 2022, a canyon bat named “Barbara” similarly hailing from southern Oregon was declared the top.
“Our effort every year is to just collect as much data as we can on the species in our resource area, so that we do know how to better protect them, and proudly we do it well,” Busk said. The beauty contest will continue in rounds over the next week. It’s scheduled to end up next Thursday, when the winner will be announced.
