教学实施过程:
1. Have students read paragraphs 4 to 5 again and answer the following questions.
What is the function of the first sentence in paragraph 5? How do you understand it?
The first sentence in paragraph 5 is “In short, this technology is transforming the way we
live.” This is a conclusion to the influence of AI on humans, and is also a transitional
sentence between the two paragraphs. What the author implies here is that AI can
transform our lives in a good way or in a potentially dangerous way. And then the author
further explains himself in paragraph 5.
2. Have students read the first and the last paragraphs again and answer the following questions.
(1) What are the similarities and differences between the content of the two paragraphs?
Both paragraphs mention an imaginary scene of a robot helping people to do all the work.
This sounds fantastic, but after explaining the potential dangers posed by AI, the author
wants to warn us not to be too greedy about this fantasy. The change of attitudes between
the two paragraphs indicates that we should be critical about the future development of AI.
(2) Why does the author organize his words in this way?
The author brings the topic back to the dream of AI at the end of the article, which echoes
what he says at the beginning. This makes the reader think deeper about the main idea of

this article.
3. Have students answer the first question in A3 on page 46.
What is the author’s attitude to artificial intelligence? Use details from the article to support
your opinion.
The author is excited but also cautious about AI. He uses the example of having a robot do”
all your work for you and says “How cool that would be!” He also explains how AI could
benefit us by listing various applications of AI, such as health care and machine translation.
However, while looking forward to its potential, he is clearly concerned about the possible
dangers of AI. He asks a series of questions about the future of AI and quotes Stephen
Hawking to show the potential dangers. In the conclusion the author also warns, “We need
to make sure that we will not fall victim to AI.
4. Have students finish B1 on page 47 and then fill in the following chart.
Answer: (1) analyse (2) networks (3) to name but a few (4) pose
(5) warnings (6) fall victim to (7) are urged/have been urged (8) Apparently
5. Have students read the tip of “Understanding words in context” and finish B2 on page 47.
Possible answer 1. a. 她从包里掏出一把硬币。 b 机遇和危机不过是同一枚硬币的
正反面。 c “丝绸之路”一词是由一名德国旅行家、地理学家创造出来的。 2. a 请问
您可以拼一下您的姓氏吗? b 有些人担心人工智能将给人类招致灾难。
6. Have students finish B3 on page 47.
Stephen Hawking, for example, warned, “The development of full artificial intelligence
could spell the end of the human race.” As far as I am concerned, AI machines would live in
harmony with human beings, working to our advantage. Though AI machines may become
very intelligent and even outsmart human beings, I think they would support and help
human beings. The mathematician and electrical engineer Claude Elwood Shannon once
said, “I visualize a time when we will be to robots what dogs are to humans. And I am
rooting for the machines.” This humorous quote shows why we do not need to be afraid of
powerful AI: as AI develops, it will develop a strong bond with humanity, similar to the
relationship between humans and dogs, one of loyalty and friendship.
