Have students finish the following tasks before reading the article. (1) Have students answer the first question on page 44. I know that artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of study concerned with making computers collect, analyse and use data to copy intelligent human behaviour. This means that the computers are able to solve problems, understand contexts and adapt in order to respond accordingly in similar future situations. I know that we are already using AI in our daily lives, like the voice-activated assistant on some smartphones that helps us find a restaurant or book a taxi. Some cars use AI for navigation and to enhance self-driving capabilities. (2) Have students read the tip of “Predicting the structure of a text” and then answer the second question on page 44. The title uses the words “friendly” and “frightening”, which indicates that this article might touch upon the benefits and threats of AI. The four pictures on the next page suggest a possible discussion of the various relationships between AI and human beings—humans and AI may develop a friendly relationship, or AI may pose dangers to humans.
