Laurence Kemball-Cook, a 30-year-old engineer and inventor, is the creator of Pavegen, a paving tile (地砖) that turns the force of people’s footsteps into clean, renewable energy.
“My vision is for Pavegen to be to cities what ‘Intel inside’ is for PCs,” he says. “I want to cover every single city in the world with our tiles. I want to turn every bridge, road and building into a kinetic-energy (动能的) device.”
The idea first came to him while he was studying industrial design and technology at university. He was challenged to design a strict light that’s powered by solar or by wind. “But when the sun’s not shining or when the wind’s not blowing there’s no power. So I tried for a year and I failed.” he recalled.
“I was really upset. Then one day I was walking through Victoria Station in London and I thought about all the people there. I’d read that 38,000 people an hour walked through the station. What if we could use that energy as a power source?”
Laurence admits, “The idea of generating energy from footsteps isn’t new and other people have tried it. But the power is so low that you can never do anything meaningful with that energy.” Laurence took a different route. The weight of a footstep on his tile makes a horizontal flywheel inside it rotate (旋转). “The more people walk, the more this flywheel spins,” he explains. “Then we take the power from the flywheel as we need it. We can suck it out bit by bit.”
At the 2013 Paris Marathon, where Pavegen installed (安装) tiles at the finish, generating 3,141,926 joules—enough to recharge 1880 mobile phones or power an electric Nissan Leaf car for 24 km.
Laurence said, “Some people might define their aims as wealth or success, but for me it’s just, let’s get it out there and do good.”
4. What inspired Laurence’s idea for Pavegen?
A. An experiment in the lab. B. A theory in the textbook.
C. A design of a street light. D. An experience at a station.
5. What does paragraph 5 mainly focus on about Pavegen?
A. Its significance. B. Its limitation.
C. Its working mechanism. D. Its possible application.
6. What does the 2013 Paris Marathon suggest about the tiles?
A. It gained popularity. B. It showed great promise.
C. It still needed improvement. D. It was pioneering but inefficient.
7. Which of the following can best describe Laurence?
A. Ambitious and creative. B. Caring and responsible.
C. Brave and intelligent. D. Flexible and independent.
D 5. C 6. B 7. A

根据文章第四段“ ‘I was really upset. Then one day I was walking through Victoria Station in London and I thought about all the people there. I’d read that 38,000 people an hour walked through the station. What if we could use that energy as a power source?’ (“我真的很难过。后来有一天,当我走过伦敦的维多利亚车站时,我想到了那里的所有人。我读到过每小时有38,000人经过车站。如果我们能把这种能量用作能源呢?”)”可知,Laurence在维多利亚车站的经历激发了他发明Pavegen的想法。故选D。
【5题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第五段“Laurence admits, ‘The idea of generating energy from footsteps isn’t new and other people have tried it. But the power is so low that you can never do anything meaningful with that energy.’ Laurence took a different route. The weight of a footstep on his tile makes a horizontal flywheel inside it rotate (旋转). ‘The more people walk, the more this flywheel spins,’ he explains. ‘Then we take the power from the flywheel as we need it. We can suck it out bit by bit.’
根据第六段“At the 2013 Paris Marathon, where Pavegen installed (安装) tiles at the finish, generating 3,141,926 joules—enough to recharge 1880 mobile phones or power an electric Nissan Leaf car for 24 km. (在2013年的巴黎马拉松比赛中,帕维根在终点安装了瓷砖,产生了3,141,926焦耳的能量,足以为1880部手机充电,或为一辆日产Leaf电动汽车提供24公里的动力。)”可知,Pavegen在2013年巴黎马拉松比赛中取得了巨大的成就,这显示出了它的巨大潜力。promise表示“前景”。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Laurence Kemball-Cook, a 30-year-old engineer and inventor, is the creator of Pavegen, a paving tile (地砖) that turns the force of peoples footsteps into clean, renewable energy. (30岁的工程师兼发明家劳伦斯·肯鲍尔·库克是Pavegen铺路砖的创造者,这种砖可以将人们走路的力量转化为清洁的可再生能源。)”劳伦斯是铺路砖的创造者,且人们走路的力量可以转化为清洁能源,可知,劳伦斯是有创造力的。根据文章第二段“ ‘I want to cover every single city in the world with our tiles. I want to turn every bridge, road and building into a kinetic-energy (动能的) device.’ (“我想用我们的瓷砖覆盖世界上的每一个城市。我想把每一座桥、每一条路、每一栋建筑都变成动能装置。”)”可知,劳伦斯是有雄心壮志的。故选A。
C
Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, a British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).
Antioxidants, also known as AOS, are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO. After adding two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon, Martin soon found her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like. We need to see more experiments about it.
GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.
Even so, many people still have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.
Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.
8. What makes purple tomatoes really special?
A. Their medical value. B. Their delicious flavor.
C. Their proper size. D. Their pleasant color.
9. What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Opposed.
10. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The environment affects GMO foods.
B. The customers do not like GMO foods.
C. GMO products are used to help farmers.
D. Scientists think GMO products are safe.
11. What’s mainly talked about in the text?
A. Different DNA can benefit plant growth.
B. Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.
C. Scientists are changing DNA of crops.
D. Human health depends on changed DNA.
A 9. B 10. D 11. B
根据第一段中“Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).(虽然颜色不同寻常,但现在这种特殊的西红柿已经获得了美国政府的批准,它含有很高的抗氧化剂)”以及第二段中“Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. (科学家认为,AOS可能有助于预防心脏病,并有助于对抗糖尿病等疾病。)”可知,紫色番茄中含有抗氧化剂,抗氧化剂能够有助于对抗糖尿病等疾病。故紫色番茄的特殊之处在于它的医用价值。故选A。
根据第三段中的“Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be the same. We need to see more experiments about it.”(虽然这是个好消息,但在老鼠身上进行的实验并不总是能预测对人类的影响是一样的。
第四段提到“But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.(转基因产品并不受消费者欢迎,许多人被这些食物不天然或不安全的想法吓到了。
标题“Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.(转基因西红柿批准上市)”符合文意,故选B。
D
When my son was a little child, he liked to run in our driveway until he fell. He would then turn to me to see if he was hurt. If my face showed worry, he would burst out crying. If I maintained calmness, he would brush himself off and get back to running. Learning that I could so powerfully influence his mental state was a revelation (启示). Here was this human being who was counting on me to make sense of the world —not just how to tie his shoes or recite the ABCs, but how to feel.
I’ve spent the past 30 years working in schools, and I’ve watched thousands of parents engage with educators and with their children. Too often, I watch parents over functioning —taking away their kids’ confidence that comes from struggling and persevering, and exhausting themselves in the process. We’re biologically wired to prevent our children’s suffering. A parent’s first response is often to remove obstacles (障碍) from their child’s path. This urge has led to pop-culture belief around pushy parenting styles, including the “Helicopter Parent,” who flies in to rescue a child in crisis, and the “Snowplow Parent,” who flattens any obstacle in their child’s way.
In the 1960s, the psychologist Diana Baumrind described three parenting styles, which researchers eventually expanded to four: authoritarian, permissive, uninvolved, and authoritative. Authoritarian parents make all decisions for their children with little room for negotiation. Permissive parents avoid conflict by setting few boundaries. Uninvolved parents are disconnected, providing minimal support. Authoritative parents allow for some flexibility, combining clear expectations with the willingness to listen. Authoritative parents can be referred to as “Lighthouse Parents”. Like a lighthouse that helps sailors avoid crashing into rocks, “Lighthouse Parents” provide firm boundaries and emotional support while allowing their children the freedom to deal with their own challenges. They demonstrate that they trust their kids to handle difficult situations independently.
All parents show up as authoritarian, permissive, uninvolved, or authoritative at different times, depending on the situation. But remembering to put parenting in perspective, focusing on long-term outcomes over short-term saves, can reduce some of the stress of parenting while also producing better outcomes for children.
12. Why does the author mention his son’s fall in paragraph 1?
A. To emphasize the pain children suffer in their growth.
B. To highlight the importance of parents’ emotional stability.
C. To show the influence parents’ responses have on children.
D. To illustrate children’s ability to handle problems independently.
13 What is a possible result of over functioning according to paragraph 2?
A. Parents’ anxiety and exhaustion.
B. Children’s struggling and persevering.
C. Children’s disappointment with their parents.
D. Parents’ lack of confidence in solving problems.
14. What do “Lighthouse Parents” tend to do in their parenting?
A. Remove obstacles from their children’s path.
B Provide their children with support and trust.
C. Avoid participating in their children’s matters.
D. Make decisions for their children without negotiation.
15. Which of the following may the author agree with?
A. Parents should learn to let go if necessary.
B. Being a parent comes at a considerable cost.
C. Parents need prioritize children’s happiness.
D. Every parenting style is a double-edged weapon.
C 13. A 14. B 15. A
由文章第一段“When my son was a little child, he liked to run in our driveway until he fell. He would then turn to me to see if he was hurt. If my face showed worry, he would burst out crying. If I maintained calmness, he would brush himself off and get back to running. Learning that I could so powerfully influence his mental state was a revelation (启示). Here was this human being who was counting on me to make sense of the world —not just how to tie his shoes or recite the ABCs, but how to feel.(当我儿子还是个小孩子的时候,他喜欢在我们的车道上跑,直到摔倒。然后他会转向我,看看他是否受伤了。如果我脸上流露出担忧,他就会放声大哭。如果我保持冷静,他就会把自己掸掉,重新开始跑步。得知我能如此有力地影响他的精神状态,这是一个启示。这个人指望我来理解这个世界——不仅仅是如何系鞋带或背诵ABC,还有如何去感受。)”可知,作者在第一段中提到了儿子的摔倒,以表明父母的反应对孩子的影响。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第二段“Too often, I watch parents over functioning —taking away their kids’ confidence that comes from struggling and persevering, and exhausting themselves in the process. We’re biologically wired to prevent our children’s suffering. (我经常看到父母过度运作,剥夺了孩子从挣扎和坚持中获得的信心,并在这个过程中让自己筋疲力尽。我们天生就有防止孩子受苦的能力。)”可推测,过度运作的一个可能结果是让父母焦虑和疲惫。故选A项。
由文章第三段“Like a lighthouse that helps sailors avoid crashing into rocks, ‘Lighthouse Parents’ provide firm boundaries and emotional support while allowing their children the freedom to deal with their own challenges. (就像帮助水手避免撞上岩石的灯塔一样,‘灯塔父母’ 提供了坚定的界限和情感支持,同时允许他们的孩子自由地应对自己的挑战。)”可知,“灯塔父母”倾向于为孩子提供育儿方面的支持和信任。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第二段“I watch parents over functioning —taking away their kids’ confidence that comes from struggling and persevering, and exhausting themselves in the process. We’re biologically wired to prevent our children’s suffering. A parent’s first response is often to remove obstacles (障碍) from their child’s path. 【答案】16. E 17. F 18. B 19. D 20. G
根据上文“You feel that you must do what they expect and that you must meet their expectations, otherwise you’ll lose their approval.(你觉得你必须做他们期望的事情,你必须满足他们的期望,否则你会失去他们的认可。)”下文“ Then, you’ll be able to do what you want freely.(然后,你就可以自由地做你想做的事。)” E选项“If this is the case, it’s time to start working on your self-esteem .(如果是这样的话,是时候开始培养你的自尊了。)”中,前半句“If this is the case, ”与上文一致,后半句“ it’s time to start working on your self-esteem .”
根据上文“You must lead your life independently.(你必须自己独立地生活。)” 所以,F项“You must do what you want without being affected by what others think.(你必须做自己想做的事,不要被别人的想法所影响。)”
由本段的第一句“By surrounding yourself with people who think like you, you’ll realize that you don’t feel judged.(和你想法相同的人在一起,你会意识到你不会觉得自己被评判了。)”和空后的“Your new friends will integrate into your life and you’ll also keep your genuine friends.(你的新朋友会融入你的生活,你也会保持你真正的朋友。)”可知空处应该和friends相关,B项“You don’t have to change your circle of friends.(你不必改变你的朋友圈。)”故选B。
根据上文“To overcome your fear of what others think and of their non-approval, you should start talking about your plans, For instance, you might want to tell a handful of friends about your wishes and dreams.(为了克服你对别人想法和他们不赞成的恐惧,你应该开始谈论你的计划。例如,你可能想要告诉几个朋友你的愿望和梦想。)”可知,下文是有关如何克服的句子,此外,和D选项“By talking to them, you’ll be able to organize your plans and ideas.” 故选D。
根据空前“It’s unavoidable that not everything will be plain sailing, and you’ll find obstacles along your way. (不可避免的是,并不是每件事都一帆风顺,你会在路上遇到障碍。)”可知,下文应该是鼓励去解决障碍,继续前进的句子。所以,G项“However, you must trust in yourself and seek the necessary strength to move forward.(然而,你必须相信自己,寻求力量继续前进。)”

Nowadays, an increasing number of young Chinese spend money because they are “lazy”. According to a report issued in December by China’s e-commerce platform Taobao on China’s “lazy economy”, Chinese people spent 16 billion yuan on products and services online in 2018. The post-1995 generation was the “laziest” as its consumption increased by 82 percent, compared with that in 2017.
The so-called lazy economy refers to a new type of consumption of products and services which are designed to save time and labor. According to the report, many people of the post-1995 generation buy high-tech electronic devices such as floor mopping robots and automatic window cleaners, which save the trouble of doing household chores. Meanwhile, take-out food delivery services are also popular among people born after 1995.
Young people are willing to spend money on such products because they want to enjoy hard-earned leisure time after a busy and stressful day at work or school, reported Global Times. Because they need to focus on their studies or jobs, these so-called lazy people tend to use their leisure time more efficiently. For example, Wei Duo, a 21-year-old college student, is a frequent user of take-out food delivery services. “I once had a birthday cake delivered to my friend who lives far from my home. It cost me 50 yuan but it saved me almost half a day that would have been needed to deliver it myself My friend was also happy because she got to eat the cake instantly.” Wei told the Global Times.
While the “lazy economy” might be convenient for young people, it might also create problems. The lazy economy’ on campus is expressed in things like people buying food or other things without leaving the dormitory. As a result, they stay in their dormitories all day long, playing on computers and smart phones. According to Jinan Daily, this situation could lead to young people becoming less sociable and even developing problems of communicating with others. Young people should be alert (警觉的) to it.

The entire town displays the ski-chic atmosphere, hosting dozens of ski and snow board competitions and festivals annually. In the warmer months, more outdoor enthusiasts come out to play. Visitors can try hiking or cycling up the mountains. While Whistler is an ideal vacation spot for the active types, other travelers can enjoy the local museums and art galleries filled within formative exhibits. Plus, there are family-friendly activities and attractions like summer concerts, along with plenty of shopping options.
When to visit
The best times to visit Whistler are from June through August and between December and March.
How to get around
The best ways to get around Whistler are on foot or by bike. Or, you can take the shuttlebuses from Whistler Village, which transport visitors to Lost Lake Park and the Marketplace. Meanwhile, having a car will allow you the freedom to explore top attractions like Whistler Train Wreck and Alexander Falls without having to spend a lot of cash on a cab.

13. What is a possible result of over functioning according to paragraph 2?
B. Provide their children with support and trust.
