American workers have cut the number of hours they spend in their jobs since2019, but no group has cut down its time on the clock more than young, high-earning men whose jobs typically demand long hours.
The top-earning 10% of men in the U. S. labor market worked 77 fewer work hours in 2022, on average, than those in the same earnings group in 2019, according to a new study of federal data by the economics department at Washington University in St. Louis. Over the same three-year period, the top-earning 10% of women cut back time at work by 29 hours.
High-earning men in the 25-to-39 range who could be described as “workaholics” were pulling back, often by choice, says Yongseok Shin, a professor who co-wrote the paper.
“These are the people who have that bargaining power (议价能力)” Dr. Shin says many workers have had the power over their employers in a tight job market. “They have the advantage to decide how many hours they want to work without worrying too much about their life.”
Before the pandemic (疫情), Eli Albrecht, a lawyer in the Washington, D. C., area, says he worked between 80 to 90 hours a week. Now, he says he puts in 60 to 70 hours each week, sharing Zoom school (上网课) duties for two of his young children with his wife. He says he enjoys family time.
As high-earning workers in the U. S. cut back, low wage workers increased their hours, according to Dr. Shin’s research. The bottom-earning 10% of working men worked 41 hours more in 2022, on average, than in 2019. Women in the lowest earning group lifted their hours worked 52 hours more last year compared with 2019.
24. Why can high-earning people reduce their working time according to Shin?
A. They worry about their life. B. They have to attend school.
C. They like bargaining with people. D. They have the ability to bargain.
25. What do we know about the top-earning 10% of men?
A. They worked 77 hours each week in 2022. B. They increased their working hours in 2019.
C. They enjoy being as workaholics at present. D. They have cut down more working hours.
26. What do we know about Eli Albrecht?
A. He is crazy about work. B. He lives in New York.
C. He cares about his family. D. He works longer than before.
27. Which group of people have to increase their working hours?
A. The lowest earning group. B. The top-earning women.
C. All the lawyers and doctors. D. All men with young children.

Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy (星系). The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes across the world. It was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).
The announcement was made in Washington, Brussels, Santiago, Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo. Details have been published today in Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Prof Heino Falcke, of Radboud University in the Netherlands, who proposed the experiment, told BBC News that the black hole was found in a galaxy called M87. “What we see is larger than the size of our entire Solar System,” he said. “It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun. And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exists. It is an absolute monster, the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe.”
The image shows an intensely bright “ring of fire”, as Prof Falcke describes it, surrounding a perfectly circular dark hole. The bright halo is caused by very heated gas falling into the hole. The light is brighter than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy combined — which is why it can be seen at such distance from Earth. The edge of the dark circle at the center is the point at which the gas enters the black hole, which is an object that has such a large gravitational pull, not even light can escape.
“It is remarkable that the image we observe is so similar to that which we get from our theoretical calculations. So far, it looks like Einstein is correct once again.” said Dr Ziri Younsi, of University College London — who is part of the EHT collaboration.
Chinese scientists were involved in the observation through a telescope in Hawaii. They were also highly involved in follow-up data processing and theoretical analysis, said Shen Zhiqiang, head of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shanghai Astronomical Observatory and a member of the EHT international team.
Shanghai and Taipei were selected as two of the cities to hold news conferences, together with Washington, Brussels, Santiago and Tokyo, a recognition of China’s contribution.
“In the fields of astronomy, radio astronomy, and space astrophysics, China has made a significant contribution to this global project,” Falcke said.
28. What does the underlined word in Para.4 mean?
A. Saying hello to somebody. B. A circle of light.
C. Not having much distance. D. A hole in something.
29. What can we learn about the black hole from Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. Its large gravitational pull is so strong that light cannot escape.
B. The light of its ring is as bright as all the other stars in the galaxy.
C. It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Moon.
D. It is one of the lightest black holes that exists.
30. Which is the role played by Chinese scientists in the experiment?
A. Playing an important part. B. Leading the experiment.
C. Just processing the data. D. Starting the experiment.
31. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. A Book about Black Holes B. How Einstein Discovered a Black Hole
C. How a Black Hole Is formed D. First Image of a Black Hole Taken
D
Confucius (孔子), a famous teacher, was a politician and philosopher (哲 学 家 ) who lived in “Spring and Autumn Period”. During his lifetime, he planted the seeds for China’s complete change by teaching thousands of people. Today, he is thought to be one of the world’s greatest teachers.
Confucius grew up in a poor family. As he grew up, Confucius worked to help his mother earn money. When he wasn’t working, he would read. His favorite thing to do was to learn. His mother saw this and did her best to help him learn. One day, rich families noticed how smart he was and offered him jobs counting their money and keeping track of their crops.
Confucius did this until he was 30 years old, but he always wanted to do more.
He didn’t like the way rulers treated their people. He wanted to find a way to help people who were less fortunate than he was. Later, he founded the philosophy “Confucianism”. Confucianism states that by educating yourself, loving your family, and respecting tradition you could become a better person. Confucius believed a person could achieve these things by practicing self-discipline (自 律). For the rest of his life, Confucius traveled and taught the people of China about self-discipline and the importance of education. He even opened China’s first school that taught both the poor and the wealthy as equals. Although he became very famous among China’s lower classes, the rulers of China never accepted his teachings. Eventually, his philosophy of self-discipline helped China unite under one ruler and finally find peace. Today, Confucius is celebrated all over the world for his philosophy of education, equality, and peace over war, money, and injustice.
32. What can we know about Confucius from the passage?
A. He was born in a politician family.
B. He was once a farmer guiding people farming.
C. He once acted as a math teacher.
D. He devoted himself to social development.
33. Why did rich families give him jobs?
A. He likes counting money. B. He enjoyed harvesting crops.
C. He was very clever. D. He disliked rulers.
34. Which is very important to keep peace according to the author?
A. Respect. B. Self-confidence. C. Self-discipline. D. Equality.
35. What is the writer’s attitude towards Confucianism?
A. Supportive (支持的). B. Doubtful (怀疑的). C. Disappointed. D. Hopeful.

I would appreciate it if you could tell me what we will learn in the classes and the homework assignments. I promise I will do what I can to make up the missed lessons.
Looking forward to your reply.

第二节(满分15分)
【67题答案】
【答案】 I can still remember one day I decided to help my parents wash dishes after dinner. At first, I got the dirty dishes to the kitchen. Then I began to wash them. I turned on the tap and water covered all the dishes in the sink. Then I added some detergent to the water. Maybe because I put too much, it was full of bubbles in the sink. It was just like a bubble bath for dishes and bowls. I caught a bowl to wash. It was slippery. “Pang!” The bowl slipped from my fingers. It dropped into the sink and broke another bowl and a dish. It was terrible! There was only one dish left.
At that moment, my mother suddenly appeared by my side with her mouth widely open. I thought she was going to punish me, but she just burst into laughter and encouraged me to do a better job next time.
