B American teenager Rain Price was waved off (挥手) to school from the bus stop outside his house, by his dad, every day for a whole school year. OK, so that doesn’t sound too bad, but this was no ordinary goodbye, because each day Rain’s dad did it while wearing a different fancy-dress costume (服装)! It all started on Rain’s first day of high school. Like many proud parents, Rochelle and Dale, Rain’s parents, sent him off to school with a big wave. Feeling himself no longer a little kid, Rain found it quite embarrassing. That evening he said how unhappy he was when they waved him off. Then Dale had a great idea. The next morning, as Rain stepped onto the school bus, he could hear his school friends laughing. He was shocked to find that his dad was waving him off, dressed as an American football player, complete with a ball and helmet. For the rest of the school year, Dale waved goodbye dressed in different costumes. One day he was a king, the next a cook, the following Wonder Woman. Amazingly, Dale only spent $50 on all of the costumes. He got most of them from the family fancy-dress collection and then several friends and neighbors were happy to help. Most of Rain’s classmates looked forward to seeing what Dale would be wearing every day. Even Rain finally realized how cool his dad was. Born on July 16, 1872 in Norway, Roald grew up with his other three older brothers. His father, a businessman in the shipping industry, died when he was just 14. The teen had dreamed of becoming an explorer, but his mother wanted him to become a doctor. He followed his mother’s wish until she died when he was 21. Then Roald left school to go after his dream of exploring. His adventure on a Belgian research ship in 1896 was his first real polar exploration. When the ship got stuck in ice, the people on board were forced to spend winter in terrible conditions. But Roald used his skills to find fresh food, and showed himself to be a capable(能干的) explorer. This was perhaps one of the most important experiences that would lead to him becoming an Arctic (北极的) explorer. Roald had planned to be the first man to reach and explore the North pole. However, hearing that Robert Peary had already reached there, Roald changed the plan and decided to go to the South Pole. In January, 1911, Roald’s ship arrived at the Bay of Whales in Antarctica. His team set up camp there and prepared for the trip to the South Pole. The team set out to reach the South pole months later. At first, they travelled quickly, but soon they had to pass over mountains and avoid dangerous places. Finally, after nearly two months of hard travelling. On December 14, 1911, they reached the destination. The exploration took 99 days and the team travelled over 1,800 miles to the pole and back. 56. What did Roald’s mother want him to be? A. An explorer. B. An engineer. C. A doctor. D. A businessman. 57. What can we know about Roald from the third paragraph? A. He enjoyed his life in the Arctic very much. B. He was better at scientific research than others. C. He had already learned some skills to explore. D. He realized his dream of exploring the North Pole. 58. Which of the following best describes Roald? A. Caring. B. Outgoing. C. Honest. D. Brave. 59. Which picture shows the change of the speed on their way to the South Pole? 60. What can we learn from the text? A. Some members lost their lives during the trip. B. Roald was the first man to explore the North Pole. C. Roald’s ship arrived at the South Pole in January, 1911. D. They stayed at the Bay of Whales for months before setting out. D The ocean is not a quiet place. This is partly caused by sea animals. They use sound to find what they eat, whom they play with, or which place they move towards. But the noise from human activities is increasingly troubling the lives of ocean animals. According to scientists, loud noise may increase mass strandings (大规模搁浅) of sea animals. Researchers recorded only five of these events in the first half of the 20th century. From 1950 to 2004, they recorded more than 1,200 mass strandings. These were perhaps because of the use of sonar (声呐) underwater. Another main reason of loud underwater noise is pile driving (打桩). Piles are supports for bridges, oil and gas-producing areas. They' re driven deep into the floor of the ocean. Driving a single pile can take several hours and result in as many as 5,000 hits. This process creates a lot of noise. To restrain that noise, some companies are making use of tiny bubbles(气泡). A single bubble is easily broken. However, the bubble wall can make pile driving quieter. The bubble wall is usually created in this way: A tube (管子) is placed in a ring around a pile. Air is then let out through closely-spaced openings in the tube. When the bubbles rise, they act as a wall and take in some of the noise. Some more of the sound reflects back and becomes stuck inside the wall. Such bubble walls are really helpful. Other changes to pile driving can help as well. For example, people can take breaks while driving and let animals travel through. Our noise in the ocean is causing big problems. But small changes in our behaviors can make a big difference in animals' lives in the world's oceans. 61. ________ troubled the lives of ocean animals according to the text. A. The gas produced in the sea B. The food polluted by humans C. The noise from human activities D. The bubble walls made by some companies 62. Which word is close to the underlined word “restrain”? A. Control. B. Increase. C. Make. D. Begin. 63. The structure of the text is ________ . (P1 = Paragraph 1…) 64.Which statement is TRUE? A.The ocean is a quiet place. B.Researchers recorded only five of these events from 1900 to 1950. C.A tube is placed in a pile around a ring to make the bubble wall . D. Driving a single pile can result in less than 5,000 hits. 65. Which can be a proper title for the text? A. Know Why Ocean Noise Forms B. Learn More About Sea Animals C. Call on People to Protect Animals D. Try to Make a Difference to the Ocean 第二节 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的五个选项中选出能填入短文空白处的最佳选项,使短文通顺、连贯,意思完整。 (共5小题; 每小题1分,满分5分) E Every morning you get up, wash your face, brush your teeth, eat breakfast and get ready for your day. They have special plates so that their food doesn’t float (漂浮) away. 67 Sleep is also different in space. 68 They tie themselves to the wall so that they don’t float around when they are sleeping. 69 Since there is no gravity and astronauts float instead of walking or running, their muscles become weak very quickly. They have to exercise on special machines every day so that this doesn’t happen. However, it is not all hard work in space. When they are not doing science experiments, writing reports or exercising, there is a little time for fun. 70 The astronauts on the International Space Station can even connect to the Internet. Why do your teachers use songs to 81 (teach) you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this. Researchers are now studying the relationship 82 music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even 83 most difficult language. “Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain 84 (like) to remember things when they are used in a catchy (悦耳的) and 85 (meaning) way,” said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty 86 (learn) foreign languages. In his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning; and open the door for future research in this area.” Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D.C., depends 87 (heavy) on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach 88 (child) Chinese. For little kids we usually use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics. So it’s easy for them to start because they know the music.” Not only does it work, 89 it is fun for the kids. “Sometimes, I think if I were taught English in that way, maybe I would speak much 90 (good) English than now,” Hua Zhuying adds.
