Fashion magazines usually mean grand photoshoots showing models with colorful, eye-catching clothing in unique patterns. But, imagine a fashion magazine without a single picture in it. British Vogue, the UK’s well-known fashion magazine is making history by doing just that, making copies of the magazine available in pictureless Braille (盲文) and audio formats for blind and low vision folks.
Selma Blair is best known for her acting career, but she’s also known as a disability advocate. British Vogue interviewed Blair about her struggles with multiple sclerosis (硬化症) in its May 2023 edition and the actress was also featured on the magazine’s cover. That wasn’t an accident, but rather a sign of the fashion magazine’s commitment to disability inclusion.
Edward Enninful, the former editor-in-chief of the well-known magazine, announced the new format in an Instagram post that has since gotten more than 40,000 likes. “For the first time in the magazine’s history,” Enninful’s post reads, “I am pleased to share that the magazine is now available in Braille, for blind and partially sighted people. The Vogue team and I are delighted by the response to the May issue, but what the process of making it taught us is that what are most important are clear and lasting changes.”
Vogue’s move towards greater accessibility mirrored Eninnful’s experiences and his values. “I’m partially blind and my hearing is less than 50 percent. It’s never stopped me, but there are so many people with invisible disabilities who never talk about it, because it might block them. We always talk about diversity and inclusivity, but that also has to extend to our disabled brothers and sisters,” he said.
The move has been warmly praised by people with disabilities and disability advocates. Natalie Trevonne, a blend fashion designer and accessibility consultant, says that the new formats are a good start, but there’s still a lot more to do. She shares, “I just hope they will go beyond that and start including more blind and low vision folks in front of the camera and in more fashion brand campaigns.”
8. Which word can best describe British Vogue’s new copy?
A. Creative. B. Profitable. C. Ordinary. D. Conventional.
9. Why did the magazine feature Selma Blair on its cover?
A. To follow the fashion trend. B. To respect the disabled actress.
C. To suit wider public requirement. D. To show the change of the magazine.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. What impact the move made.
B. How the move became available.
C. How Eninnful supported the move.
D. Why British Vogue decided on the change.
11. What is Natalie Trevonne’s attitude towards the move?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. B

It’s never stopped me, but there are so many people with invisible disabilities who never talk about it, because it might block them. We always talk about diversity and inclusivity, but that also has to extend to our disabled brothers and sisters,” he said.(Vogue朝着更平易近人的方向发展,反映了埃宁弗的经历和他的价值观。“我部分失明,听力不到50%。这从来没有阻止过我,但有很多有隐形残疾的人从不谈论它,因为这可能会阻碍他们。我们总是谈论多样性和包容性,但这也必须延伸到我们的残疾兄弟姐妹,”他说)”可知,第四段主要讲的是为什么英国版Vogue会做出这样的改变。故选D。

Previous studies have demonstrated that contact with nature benefits mental well-being, especially for those who live in cities. For example, the risk of developing the two most universal mental disorders in the world, depression and anxiety, is 71% lower in urban citizens who live near green spaces. Most of these studies, however, haven’t considered the extent to which these benefits depend on natural diversity.
To address this gap in research, my colleagues and I examined whether environments with a wealth of natural features, such as trees, plants, waterways, and wildlife, would bring greater mental health benefits. Between April 2018 and September 2023, we gathered data through the Urban Mind app, which measures the users’ experience of urban and rural living. Nearly 2,000 people submitted 41, 000 assessments of their environment and mental well-being throughout the day.
We found that green spaces with high natural diversity have more mental health benefits than those with low natural diversity, which suggests the benefits of nature for mental well-being can be maximized by protecting and promoting biodiversity in our natural environments. This means moving away from heavily managed pockets of greenery, like landscaped gardens and parks of mown grass, towards spaces like wild grassland and waterways that provide a more attractive habitat for a range of plants and animals.
A recent survey of 15, 000 households found that those who lived near natural areas rich in plants and bird species reported lower rates of mental health issues. In fact, benefits can be experienced through daily brief incidental (偶然的) encounters with biodiverse nature.
Biodiverse nature provides more stimulation for the senses, which may improve concentration, reduce mental tiredness and restore memory. Also, people living in or near a natural space tend to spend more time exercising or socializing outdoors, both of which promote the release of mood-boosting hormones. The science, thus, is clear: Biodiversity is critical not only for the health of our planet, but also for human mental health.
12. What does the author intend to show by mentioning previous studies?
A. The reason for their own study. B. The findings of their own study.
C. The health benefits of nature. D. The problems with urban citizens.
13. Why should we move away from landscaped gardens and parks of mown grass?
A. They are energy-consuming. B. They are of low biodiversity.
C. They are doing damage to wildlife health. D. They are possibly home to natural threats.
14. How can biodiverse nature benefit our mental health according to the text?
A. By maintaining our energy. B. By beautifying our environment.
C. By encouraging outdoor activities. D. By reducing the necessity to socialize.
15. Which of the following might be the author’s opinion about biodiversity?
A. It is beneficial to memory and tiredness.
B. It is faced with human threats in many cities.
C. It is mainly responsible for our good mental health.
D. It is vital to the health of the earth and human beings.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D
【解析】

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“We found that green spaces with high natural diversity have more mental health benefits than those with low natural diversity, which suggests the benefits of nature for mental well-being can be maximized by protecting and promoting biodiversity in our natural environments. This means moving away from heavily managed pockets of greenery, like landscaped gardens and parks of mown grass, towards spaces like wild grassland and waterways that provide a more attractive habitat for a range of plants and animals.(研究发现,自然多样性高的绿地比自然多样性低的绿地对心理健康的益处更大,这表明通过保护和促进自然环境的生物多样性,自然对心理健康的益处可以最大化。这意味着从精心管理的绿地,如景观花园和修剪过的草地公园,转向像野生草原和水道这样的空间,为各种动植物提供更有吸引力的栖息地。)”可知,我们要远离景观花园和修剪过的草地公园是因为它们的生物多样性低。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Also, people living in or near a natural space tend to spend more time exercising or socializing outdoors, both of which promote the release of mood-boosting hormones. The science, thus, is clear: Biodiversity is critical not only for the health of our planet, but also for human mental health.(此外,生活在自然环境中或附近的人往往会花更多的时间在户外锻炼或社交,这两种活动都会促进情绪提升激素的释放。因此,科学是明确的:生物多样性不仅对我们星球的健康至关重要,而且对人类的心理健康也至关重要。)”可知,生物多样性通过鼓励户外活动有益于我们的心理健康。故选C。

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every October, my parents take my little brother Tex and me to pick out some pumpkins on a pumpkin patch (小块地), and carve them into different shapes for the jack-o’-lantern (南瓜灯) party in our neighbourhood. This year, just the day before Halloween, when we drove to a pumpkin patch, there was straw scattered all over the ground and piles of hay on the farm. Most importantly, there were pumpkins.
“Here I come!” I shouted, eager to pick the best pumpkin to make the scariest jack-o’-lantern. Suddenly I found a large pumpkin and ran over. But just before I picked it up, I spotted a big hole in it! “That one right over there is mine!” Tex said, racing around a hay pile to get to his perfect pumpkin. But when he got closer, he said, “No fair! Someone took a bite.”
A man with a cap came over. He said his name was Joe, the owner of the farm. He told us that some hungry animals discovered the patch and had been visiting for the past few weeks. Every morning, he found more pumpkins with a bite or two taken out. By that point, the animals had got the whole patch and he didn’t have any perfect pumpkin any more. “Should we just quit this party?” said my mom, shaking her head. “No,” said my dad, determined. “I don’t believe in giving up. If Plan A fails, we have to get creative and come up with Plan B. So what’s our Plan B?”
After thinking for a while, we had our Plan B — buy some pumpkins at the store. So we headed to the store. But when we got to a nearby store, all pumpkins were sold out. We tried other stores. Guess what? Still no luck. “What should we do now? The jack-o’-lantern party is coming.” Tex said, with tears in his eyes.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Looking at the fruits and vegetables at the store, I got Plan C.

The next evening, our family attended the jack-o’-lantern party in our neighbourhood.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Looking at the fruits and vegetables at the store, I got Plan C. “Why don’t we use other fruits and vegetables to make our jack-o’-lanterns?” I suggested excitedly. My parents and Tex looked at me, their eyes lighting up with interest. We quickly grabbed a variety of fruits and vegetables — apples, oranges, carrots, and even potatoes. Back home, we set to work, carving spooky faces and creative designs into them. Though they weren’t traditional pumpkins, our creations were unique and fun.
The next evening, our family attended the jack-o’-lantern party in our neighbourhood. As we placed our unusual jack-o’-lanterns on the table, everyone was amazed. They had never seen such a diverse and imaginative collection. Kids gathered around, laughing and pointing at the funny faces on the apples and the strange eyes on the carrots. Our table became the center of attention, and we were proud of our creativity. The party was a huge success, and we realized that sometimes, the best plans come from unexpected ideas.
