School uniforms are traditional in Britain. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody has to worry about fashion and they feel that they belong to a group. Some people believe that a school uniform can help students pay attention to schoolwork. But some schools in Britain and other countries are starting to drop the traditional uniforms.
An Australian school has decided to drop its traditional school uniform, hoping new sportswear will encourage students to take part in more activities. School headmaster Elisabeth Lenders said the uniform change had been in the works for several years. “We decided that in 2018-2019,” she said. “The importance is clear: to make young people live happy, healthy lives.”
Ms. Lenders said World Health Organization research reported 90 percent of young Australians and New Zealanders were not getting the minimum daily levels of activity they needed in order to lead a healthy life.
As well as the new uniform, she said the school would change timetables to make sure there would be chances for students to take part in physical activity every day.
Ms. Lenders said in the past, a uniform was about all looking the same but in the 21st century it was important for students to be able to choose clothes that they liked.
And this Australian school had made an online survey about the uniform change and had received great support from parents and students. Tara, mother of Ava in Year 7, said it was a great move from the school. “These are the challenges of our time, and we want young people to think about them,” she said. “It is bigger than just throwing out the old uniform. It’s about what the role of education is about. And for me, it’s helping young people to live a happy, healthy and productive life.”
4. What does the underline word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. physical activity B. uniform change
C happy life D. students’ health
5. According to the passage, the uniform change in this Australian school _______________.
A. helps students to live a healthy life B. gives students a sense of belonging
C. leaches students to dress fashionably D. helps students to pay attention to study

A. Students there may wear different kinds of clothes.
B. It’s not clear whether the change is good for students or not.
C. Parents have different opinions towards the change of uniform.
D. The change receives strong support from students and parents.

Being deaf in a hearing world can lead to painful feelings of isolation. Waitress Kelsey recently shared an experience on a social media sharing site that quickly zoomed to the top of the “front page of the Internet”. In her brief post, Kelsey explained that she waits tables at a bar during the evenings, and one night she noticed a deaf man sitting alone in her section.
When Kelsey isn’t working at the bar during the daytime she makes a good hourly pay doing sign language interpretation, so she sensed an opportunity to use her skill to make this customer feel a little less alone in the world. She approached his table and began chatting with him in sign language.
Noticing Kelsey signing, the customers at the nearby table asked how long she'd been using sign language. They had a brief conversation about her goal of becoming certified to interpret sign language in a medical or mental health setting. She didn’t think much about the whole exchange until the customers had left the restaurant and she was tidying up the tables. There, on the table of the customers who’d seen her American Sign Language conversation with the deaf man, was a handwritten note on the receipt.
“Thank you for what you do, it absolutely matters!” the note said. “Good luck with finishing your degree!” Not only that, but they’d left her a $100 tip.
Kelsey was moved by the kind note, especially because she wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. To her, she was just communicating with someone in a language that only they understood. Yet to the deaf man and the people seated next to him, she’d bridged a gap and helped someone who probably feels lonely a lot of the time.
Kelsey shared the note on the Internet to spread more love and light in the world.

D. He was a friend of the customers at the next table.
10. What did the people at the table next to the deaf man think of Kelsey?
A. She should use the Internet as a tool.
B. She needs to study further for a degree.
C. She is so kind to serve those in need.
D. She is wasting time working as a waitress.
11. What lesson can we learn from Kelsey’s experience?

Carrots are grown on farms and in family gardens throughout the world. Carrots are easy to raise and easy to harvest. They taste good, and people from all countries love them.
When people think of carrots, they usually picture in their minds a vegetable that is long, thin and orange in colour. But carrots come in many different sizes and shapes. And not all carrots are orange. For the best results, carrots should be grown in sandy soil (土壤) that does not hold water for a long time. The soil also should have no rocks. To prepare your carrots garden, dig up the soil, loosen it and turn it over. Then, mix in some plant material or animal fertilizer. Weather, soil conditions and age will affect how carrots taste. Experts say warm days, cool nights and a medium soil temperature are the best conditions for growing carrots that taste great.
Carrots need time to develop their full sugar content. This gives them their good taste. But carrots lose their sweetness if you wait too long to remove them from the ground. The best way to determine if a carrot is ready to be harvested is by its colour. Usually, the brighter the colour, the better the taste.
Carrots are prepared and eaten in many different ways. They are cut in thin pieces and added to other vegetables. They are cooked by themselves or added to stews. Or, once they are washed, they can also be eaten just as they come out of the ground.
12. What does the underlined word “picture” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Understand. B. Describe.
C. Explain. D. Imagine.
13. Which of the following actions is NOT mentioned to be needed in planting carrots?
A. Choosing wet land. B. Digging up the soil.
C. Making the earth loose. D. Mixing in plant material or animal fertilizer.
14. What do we know about carrots according to the text?
A. Orange is not the only colour that carrots have.
B. They are easy to raise but hard to harvest.
C. Only one factor affects the way carrots taste.
D. It is only by colour that you can decide if you should harvest them.
15. Why should people harvest carrots at certain time?
A. Because sometimes people are very busy.
B. Because it takes time for carrots to keep sugar.
C. Because carrots have different kinds.
D. Because weather always changes.

【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍胡萝卜的种植,收获和烹饪方式等。
【12题详解】
词义猜测题。根据本句的前半句“When people think of carrots”( 当人们想到胡萝卜时)以及下文“in their minds a vegetable that is long, thin and orange in colour.” (他们脑海中通常有这样的画面,一种又长又瘦、颜色是橙色的蔬菜。)所以“picture”就是在人们的脑海中形成的画面,也就是想象,同“imagine”同义,故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“To prepare your carrots garden, dig up the soil, loosen it and turn it over. Then, mix in some plant material or animal fertilizer. ”( 为了准备你的胡萝卜花园,把土壤翻松,翻面。然后,混合一些植物材料或动物肥料。)所以A项“Choosing wet land”(选择湿地)在种植胡萝卜中不需要,故选A。

【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Carrots need time to develop their full sugar content. This gives them their good taste. But carrots lose their sweetness if you wait too long to remove them from the ground. ”( 胡萝卜需要时间来发展其完整的糖含量。这给了他们良好的品相。但是如果你等得太久才把胡萝卜从地里拔出来,它们就会失去甜味。)由此可知,人们需要一定的时间后收获胡萝卜是因为胡萝卜需要时间来发展其完整的糖含量。故选B。

D. It is only by colour that you can decide if you should harvest them.
15. Why should people harvest carrots at certain time?
