B Cesare Mencarini is a high school student. His focus was on math, chemistry and physics. Cesare’s mother is an architect and his father is an electronic engineer. As a child, Cesare became interested in electronics. He loved to experiment. He learned to program computers and equipment like the Arduino and Raspberry Pi. He also worked with a 3D printer. After seeing a video about someone building a fusion reactor (核聚变反应堆), Cesare decided he would do something meaningful, too. The school wasn’t so excited about the idea. But Cesare worked to persuade his teachers. Finally, after a complete safety review, and with an extra advisor offering to help out, the school agreed. Cesare was a strong student, but his regular classes weren’t teaching him how to build a fusion reactor. To learn this, he spent countless hours doing research, looking up information on the Internet, and watching videos. He would read, watch 10 or 15 videos, and then try to solve the problem. He also visited a website where he got advice from scientists with more experience. Step by step, working long hours with his physics teacher and his advisor, Cesare built the reactor. Last June, at the very end of the school year, the reactor was finished. Over a year has passed since then. Cesare has continued to improve the reactor. He has built complicated equipment to control the pressure and to better see and understand what’s going on inside the reactor. He’s one of the youngest students to have built such an advanced fusion reactor. But for Cesare, it wasn’t just about the reactor. It was also about learning by doing, and about making connections with other people doing similar things. College is the next stop for Cesare — perhaps in England, perhaps in Italy. No matter where he goes, he’ll probably continue to change people’s ideas about how much young people can achieve. 4. What made Cesare determined to build a fusion reactor? A. His interest in videos. B. The inspiration from someone. C. His parents’ influence. D. The support from his school. 5. What do we say about Cesare from paragraph 4? A. He struggled to prepare for the reactor. B. He depended heavily on useful videos. C. He worked with experienced scientists. D. He had difficulty in getting information. 6. What is Cesare expected to do in the future? A. Build another reactor. B. Learn new things through the Internet. C. Make greater progress. D. Go to a famous college. 7. Which can be the best title for the text? A. Videos Act As A Teacher B. Cesare Became A Rising Star C. How To Put Theory Into Practice D. A Boy Successfully Built A Reactor C News about natural disaster, including volcanoes, storms and earthquakes, is updated daily. Besides, global warming is causing heat waves to become more frequent, pushing the limits of human survival in the hottest regions on Earth. Recent record-breaking temperatures in various parts of the world have highlighted the dangers caused by extreme heat and throw light on the challenges that lie ahead. When faced with extreme heat, the human body depends on its natural cooling mechanisms (机制) to keep a safe temperature. However, very high heat overpowers these mechanisms, putting human lives in danger. Research shows that the body’s ability to cool through sweating begins to decrease at 35℃. Being in such conditions can put pressure on the heart and cause body temperatures to rise uncontrollably, creating the greatest danger to older people and those with diseases. Recently, high temperatures have broken records across the globe. China experienced a historic high of nearly 126°F. America reached 128°F. The Middle East hit 152°F, nearing the limit of what humans can stand. These extreme heat events offer a look at the future, as global warming continues to push temperatures. The frequency of dangerously high temperatures has more than doubled since 1979, according to research in 2020. The seriousness and widespread nature of ongoing heat waves highlight that climate change is a global problem with far-reaching effects. Human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels (化石燃料), have greatly contributed to the rise in heat-trapping greenhouse gases, leading to more heat waves and other extreme weather events. It is high time to cut down on greenhouse gases and choose cleaner renewable energy sources. International cooperation and leadership are necessary to reduce the effect of climate change on our planet and protect the well-being of future generations. 8. What is the text mainly about? A. The dangers of cool waves. B. The causes of natural disasters. C. The introduction of the hottest regions on Earth. D. The discovery of the rising heat’s effect on humans. 9 What does the research find about human sweating? A. It controls cooling the mechanisms. B. It becomes less effective at 35℃. C. It increases heart efficiency in heat. D. It improves cooling in all conditions. 10. What is the data in paragraph 3 about? A. Temperature limits what humans can stand. B. Frequencies of dangerously high temperatures. C. Global average temperatures at different time periods. D. Record-breaking temperatures in specific countries. 11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph? A. To call on stopping using fossil fuels. B. To call on ignoring extreme weather events. C. To call on working internationally to address climate change. D. To call on cutting down on cleaner renewable energy. D Climate change is speeding up the frequency and seriousness of extreme(极端的) weather events in places like the Horn of Africa, where deadly floods and the worst drought hit in decades. Besides, traditional weather forecast(预报) models in sub- Saharan Africa often aren’t dependable enough to forecast extreme weather events accurately(准确地) ahead of time, leaving the areas at risk. Based on the facts, accurate and timely forecasts are important to safeguard lives and livelihoods. Climate scientists are building artificial intelligence (AI) into the traditional weather forecasting method in East Africa to improve the accuracy of extreme weather forecasts. By using both physical atmospheric processes in traditional forecasting and AI, researchers develop a first- of- its- kind new modeling approach to give more accurate rainfall forecasts.“ We start from the traditional forecasts and add the AI model over it to make up for what the traditional forecasts have missed, so that the final forecast results can more accurately match the data that has actually been observed,” explains Shruti Nath, a climate scientist and researcher at the University of Oxford Department of Physics. According to Shruti Nath, this model, which only requires a notebook computer to run, without the need for expensive supercomputers, gives local meteorological (气象的) organizations an affordable way of making more accurate forecasts in an area where there is a shortage of accurate observational data. The researchers say the project could change early warning systems in East Africa, making the area get better prepared for the extreme weather caused by climate change. Traditionally, many forecasting organizations in Africa did not have good computational resources. The project is supported by an IT company, which provides funding and computational resources. This approach gives them the ability to use AI to make forecasting at the least computational expense. The model is currently being rolled out in Kenya and Ethiopia. If successful in East Africa, researchers hope to use it in other parts of the world facing similar challenges. More countries are trying to spread the technology as well as build local ownership and trust. 12. What does the author want to stress in the first paragraph? A. The necessity of using the new weather forecast model. B. The great climate changes caused by human activities. C. The seriousness of the flood and drought in Africa. D Little progress has been made in weather forecasts. 13. How does the new weather forecast model work? A. It needs much less observational data. B. It uses supercomputers to process data. C. It combines AI with the traditional method. D. It depends on AI instead of the former way. 14. What can we say about the new weather forecast model? A. It runs easily. B. It is low- cost. C. It doesn’t work as wished. D. It is geographically limited. 15. What can be the most suitable title for the text? A. Climate Change and Its Effects on Africa B. Uncertainty of Weather Forecast with AI C. AI Helping Improve Weather Forecast in Sub- Saharan Africa D. The Challenges Faced by Traditional Weather Forecast Model 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 There have been times in your life when you may have almost no social interaction (社交) Feeling lonely can be bad for your mental and physical health. ___16___ I’ve been using many of the methods described here to build a satisfying social life for myself. His focus was on math, chemistry and physics. Cesare’s mother is an architect and his father is an electronic engineer. As a child Cesare became interested in electronics. A Boy Successfully Built A Reactor 【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. 9. What does the research find about human sweating? 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. D 11. D. Little progress has been made in weather forecasts. The Challenges Faced by Traditional Weather Forecast Model 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15.
