Michael and his wife, new residents in a San Francisco apartment, learned about their neighbor Jeff Dunan’s volunteer work for Bangladesh Relief, an organization that provides food, clothing and essential supplies for disadvantaged people in northern Bangladesh. Inspired, Michael donated $150 to Dunan’s GoFundMe campaign. However, a credit card notification alerted him to an unintended $15,041 charge.
When he saw the five-figure number he was confused. Soon, it all made sense. Michael’s credit card number started with four and one. Clearly, he accidentally began typing his credit card information while his cursor (光标) was still in the donation box.
Michael planned to call Dunan to explain, but before he had the chance to do that, he started receiving Facebook messages from Shohag Chandra, the charity’s Bangladesh-based program manager, thanking him for his generous donation. After he looked through the photos of people holding thank-you signs that read his name, Michael’s heart sank. He felt terrible that he had to withdraw his handsome donation. Once his original contribution was refunded, he decided to donate $1,500.
Although Michael had told his family and friends about the tale, he decided to share it publicly on social media, after Dunan told him the organization was desperately in need of funds. “The least I could do was take the time to post this story online and see if I could inspire other people to donate to the cause,” Michael said.
Little did he know, though, that the story would be seen far and wide, ending up raising more than $120,000 for Bangladesh Relief in the span of only a few weeks—about eight times Michael’s mistaken donation. According to Dunan, more than 3,700 people have contributed because of Michael’s post. Michael has been stunned (震惊) by the ongoing outpouring of support. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this reaction,” he said. “People can be amazing when they come together for something like this.”
4. How did Michael make the large donation?
A. He input an incorrect amount. B. He encountered a system error.
C. He was greatly inspired by Dunan. D. He entered wrong credit card details.
5. Why did Michael’s heart sink according to Paragraph 3?
A. He saw people in despair. B. He failed to offer enough money.
C. He didn’t receive the full refund. D. He realized the scale of his mistake.
6. What motivated Michael to share the story on social media?
A. Dunan’s request for publicity. B. A desire for personal recognition.
C. The organization’s urgent need for funds. D. Pressure from his family and friends.
7. What message does the story convey?
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Always prepare for a rainy day. D. A good beginning is half of victory.

Have you ever had the feeling that you can’t think when there is too much noise around? Did you ever think a fish could experience that feeling too? A recent paper published in Science titled “Soundscape (声景) of the Anthropocene Oceans”, combined over 10,000 scientific papers, confirming that undersea life knows that exact same feeling, more often than not. Anthropogenic (人为的) ocean noise, also known as underwater noise pollution, has created a dramatic impact on marine life due to “human-caused” activity within and neighboring our oceans.
Disney Pixar’s animated film Finding Nemo educated us about the ocean, and specifically within the ordinary world of a clown fish. A fact many may not know is that clown fish spend the first part of their lives as larvae (幼体), drifting with the current of the ocean until they become strong enough to swim against it. Once they are powerful and strong, they head home in sheltered coral reefs. There is only one drawback-the fish can’t physically see the reef, but they can hear it. The only problem is, if they can’t hear it, will they ever make it home?
Our anthropogenic ocean noise, such as cargo ships, ship and boat propellers (螺旋桨), surfing, deep sea mining, etc. are causing destruction of marine life. According to Time, sound is the sensory signal that travels the farthest through the ocean. Anthropogenic noise drowns out the natural soundscapes, putting marine life under immense stress. Altogether, this stress then affects their general health, disrupts their behavior, physiology, reproduction and, in extreme cases, causes death. Marine life can adapt to noise pollution, however, only if they can escape it. This only renders further complications of forcing species to leave their traditional breeding regions or their families.
Now, what if we told you there is already a solution? Multiple solutions, ideas and designs are currently in the works or already exist to reduce and reverse the damage of anthropogenic ocean noise. As Time explains, from wind-powered ships to noise-reducing propellers, floating wind turbines and “bubble curtains” that muffle construction noise, the solutions are already available and in some cases, cost-effective. The authors of the paper hope it will catch the attention of policymakers, who historically speaking, have ignored the matter still to this day.
Of all the challenges ocean creatures are battling, luckily sound pollution is the easiest compromise (妥协方案) humans can make. Once the noise has decreased, marine life will be able to better manage everything else it is up against.
8. What do we know about “Soundscape of the Anthropocene Oceans”?
A. It analyses how sound travels in the ocean.
B. It discusses different types of ocean pollution.
C. It explores the effects of noise pollution on sea life.
D. It studies how sea animals communicate with each other.
9. The author mentions clown fish in Paragraph 2 to ________.
A. present their life cycles
B. show how terrible their living conditions are
C. introduce a famous animation about the ocean world
D. stress the importance of natural soundscapes to sea life
10. What does the underlined word “renders” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Reduces. B. Causes. C. Solves. D. Prevents.
11. The author writes the article to ________.
A. publicize the knowledge of soundscape
B. regulate human’s activities on the ocean
C. emphasize the importance of animal protection
D. draw people’s attention to anthropogenic ocean noise
D
Though shark attacks can be a rare occurrence, there have been 46 publicly reported shark attacks so far this year. Then why do sharks attack humans? Here's everything we know.
Shark attacks are often put into different categories: provoked (被挑衅) and unprovoked. “Unprovoked bites” are defined as incidents in which a bite on a human occurs in the shark's natural habitat with no human provocation of the shark. “Provoked bites” occur when a human starts interacting with a shark in some way. For instance, when divers are bitten after attacking or trying to touch sharks.
Roger Tabor, a biologist and naturalist, says, “There is no evidence that sharks specifically hunt people.” Nowadays, a theory called the Mistaken Identity Hypothesis (假说) explains shark bites on surfers, swimmers and divers as “mistakes,” which typically means that sharks might confuse humans with their typical prey (猎物). Mr. Tabor says surfing has previously been linked to shark attacks because the sudden movement, similar to an animal suddenly moving back, or bright parts of wetsuits reflecting looking like a fish, can cause a response in the visually oriented (导向的) great white".
In a paper published by Eric Clua, a marine biologist and Carl Meyer, a biologist at the University of Hawaii, in the Brill Journal, they look at the MIH theory. The paper says that although MlH may now be “widely” accepted by the general public and the scientific community, there are still some unknown gaps. “This hypothesis ignores the important role of other senses (e.g. hearing) in discriminating potential prey,” the paper says. The authors also note that shark bites which occur in clear water cannot always be explained by MIH. It adds," To put it simply, sharks don't make ‘mistakes’ but instead continually explore their environments and routinely investigate novel objects as potential prey by biting them.”
Climate change may be another reason for seeing an increase in shark attacks. Mr. Tabor says," Global warming and habitat damage can move marine species including seals and sharks. That can bring larger sharks more into contact with beaches, with people.”
12. What can we learn about sharks from paragraph 2?
A. They tend to bite humans purposely.
B. They are frequently targeted at divers.
C. They are potentially risky to interact with.
D. They don't attack people unless disturbed.
13. Why do sharks attack people according to Mr. Tabor?
A. Bright wetsuits damage sharks' vision.
B Sharks have quite a poor sense of sight.
C. Sharks merely take people for their prey.
D. Global warming results in their violence.
14. What is Eric Clua and Carl Meyer’ attitude toward the MIH theory?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Carefree. D. Tolerant.
15. What do the authors think accounts for sharks' bites on people?
A. Desire to seek new food sources.
B. Lack of underwater creatures as prey.
C. Constant transformation of the environment.
D. Incompetence of distinguishing novel objects.
75 years after humans successfully put their first object into space it’s much easier to launch a satellite, but a lot messier once we’re up there. ___16___ There are around 5,000 satellites in orbit with fewer than half actually working. When a satellite stops functioning, it keeps orbiting at very high speeds, making a great threat for the useful ones.
___17___ Scientists are struggling for strategies to tackle the problem. One suggested solution is to refuel the dead satellites and bring them back to life. Another concept is to use a robot with four arms to catch a dead satellite before pulling it into the atmosphere to burn it up.
This is hard both technically and politically, though. ___18___ And the world hasn’t yet reached a consensus (共识) on why we should clear the space junk and there are no real rules that govern how we work out there.
First why should we keep things clean in orbit? We use satellites to check the weather, find our way around, and for financial purposes. Space data gives us not just beautiful pictures of the earth, but also information about climate change, natural disasters and other things that can help humans with earthbound challenges. ___19___
Then how can we humans think as one big community? Governments should make powerful regulations. Companies ought to engage in shared practices and scientists are expected to think up practical methods. ___20___ Only in this way can we keep those orbital highways open for the next generation and beyond before they are deadly blocked by space junk.
A. They provide services closely related to our life.
B. So space sustainability has become a big concern.
C. Space is getting increasingly crowded and dangerous.
D. Operating a robot from hundreds of miles away is tough.
E. Anyway, we should quicken the pace of clearing up.
F. So we depend largely on space and it needs to be tidied up.
G. All of these have been integrated into the solutions we really need.

通读全文,并结合最后一段的“Little did he know, though, that the story would be seen far and wide, ending up raising more than $120,000 for Bangladesh Relief in the span of only a few weeks—about eight times Michael’s mistaken donation. According to Dunan, more than 3,700 people have contributed because of Michael’s post. Michael has been stunned ( 震惊) by the ongoing outpouring of support. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this reaction,” he said. “People can be amazing when they come together for something like this.”(然而,他并不知道,这个故事会被广泛传播,最终在短短几周内为孟加拉国救济组织筹集了12万多美元——大约是迈克尔错误捐款的8倍。 A. Actions speak louder than words.(行动胜于言语);B. Many hands make light work. Always prepare for a rainy day. (未雨绸缪);D.A good beginning is half of victory.

C 9. D 10. B 11. D
根据第一段最后一句“Anthropogenic (人为的) ocean noise, also known as underwater noise pollution, has created a dramatic impact on marine life due to “human-caused” activity within and neighboring our oceans. (由于在我们的海洋内部和邻近的海洋“人类造成的”活动,人为的海洋噪音,也被称为水下噪音污染,已经对海洋生物产生了巨大的影响。)”可知,人类海洋声景探索人为活动对海洋生物的影响。故选C项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“A fact many may not know is that clown fish spend the first part of their lives as larvae (幼体), drifting with the current of the ocean until they become strong enough to swim against it. Once they are powerful and strong, they head home in sheltered coral reefs. There is only one drawback-the fish can’t physically see the reef, but they can hear it. The only problem is, if they can’t hear it, will they ever make it home?(许多人可能不知道的一个事实是,小丑鱼生命的前半部分是作为幼虫度过的,它们随着洋流漂流,直到它们变得足够强壮,可以逆流而上。一旦它们变得强壮有力,它们就会回到隐蔽的珊瑚礁中。只有一个缺点——鱼看不到礁石,但它们能听到。唯一的问题是,如果他们听不到,他们还能回家吗?)”可知,小丑鱼是通过声音来寻找回家的路,说明了海底生物对声音的依赖性。由此推知,列举小丑鱼是强调了自然的声景对海底生物是十分重要的。故选D项。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据所划单词前一句“Marine life can adapt to noise pollution, however, only if they can escape it.(然而,海洋生物只有在能够逃脱噪音污染的情况下才能适应噪音污染。)”和和划线词后“further complications of forcing species to leave their traditional breeding regions or their families. (迫使物种离开传统繁殖区或其家族的进一步复杂化)”可推出,“物种离它们的传统繁殖地更远或者与它们家族分离的情况更加严重”是噪音污染引起的结果,所以renders意思是“引起,造成”。A.
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段最后一句“Anthropogenic (人为的) ocean noise, also known as underwater noise pollution, has created a dramatic impact on marine life due to “human-caused” activity within and neighboring our oceans. (由于在我们的海洋内部和邻近的海洋“人类造成的”活动,人为的海洋噪音,也被称为水下噪音污染,已经对海洋生物产生了巨大的影响。)”和最后一段的“Once the noise has decreased, marine life will be able to better manage everything else it is up against.(一旦噪音减少,海洋生物将能够更好地应对它们所面临的一切)”可知,文章主要介绍了人为的海洋噪声也称为水下噪声污染,探索了人为活动对海洋生物的影响。

B. Sharks have quite a poor sense of sight.
C 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据文章第二段中““Unprovoked bites” are defined as incidents in which a bite on a human occurs in the shark's natural habitat with no human provocation of the shark. “Provoked bites” occur when a human starts interacting with a shark in some way.(“无挑衅性袭击”被定义为在鲨鱼的自然栖息地发生的对人类的咬伤,没有人类挑衅鲨鱼。“挑衅性咬伤”发生在人类开始以某种方式与鲨鱼互动时。)”可推知,与鲨鱼互动可能会引发鲨鱼的攻击,故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Mr. Tabor says surfing has previously been linked to shark attacks because the sudden movement, similar to an animal suddenly moving back, or bright parts of wetsuits reflecting looking like a fish, can cause a response in the visually oriented (导向的) great white(塔博尔先生说,冲浪以前曾与鲨鱼攻击有关,因为突然的动作,类似于动物突然后退,或者潜水服的亮部反射看起来像鱼,可以引起视觉导向的大白鲨的反应。)”
根据文章第四段“The paper says that although MlH may now be “widely” accepted by the general public and the scientific community, there are still some unknown gaps.(该论文指出,尽管MlH现在可能已经被公众和科学界“广泛”接受,但仍然存在一些未知的空白。)”
根据文章第四段“To put it simply, sharks don't make ‘mistakes’but instead continually explore their environments and routinely investigate novel objects as potential prey by biting them.(简单地说,鲨鱼不会犯“错误”,而是不断探索他们的环境,并通过咬它们来常规地调查新的东西作为潜在的猎物。)” 故选A项。

75 years after humans successfully put their first object into space, it’s much easier to launch a satellite, but a lot messier once we’re up there.
