“Thank you for applying for the position,” the email read. “Your application has not been successful. We wish you every success in securing a suitable position in the future.” I received the email 2 weeks after an interview.
When I read it, I felt disappointed and angry. I’d spent hours preparing for the interview and in the end, I didn’t even know why I wasn’t successful! “How can I adapt my job search approach if I don’t know what went wrong?”
The value of that kind of feedback (反馈) became obvious to me a few months later. After applying for a job at a consulting company, I spent months working my way through the interview process before getting a phone call. “Unfortunately, we decided to offer the job to someone else,” the voice said. Again, the feeling I got from that rejection email appeared. But the conversation wasn’t over. “Would you like to hear feedback from us?” the company representative asked.
The representative went on to tell me I hadn’t clearly shown my motivation for applying for the position and why I wanted to work for the company. The feedback was tough to hear. But I quickly realized they were right. After completing my Ph. D.in Germany, my top priority had been to find a position in Poland. So I wasn’t very selective about what I had applied for. The job at the consulting company was something I could do, but I didn’t feel passionate about it — and that was clearly shown in the interview process.
From then on, I only pursued the jobs that I was passionate about. In my applications, I also began stating more clearly why I wanted that job. Soon the approach paid off. I got an offer for a postdoc position in Poland that I was truly excited about.
Now, when early-career scientists interview for positions in my lab, I keep that experience in mind. If they don’t get the position, I will tell them why and what they can do to improve their job applications going forward.
24.What did the author expect to read in the rejection email?
A.Reasons for failure. B.Useful guidelines.
C.Encouraging words. D.Sincere apologies.
25.How did the author feel when receiving the call at first?
A.Embarrassed. B.Discouraged. C.Nervous. D.Guilty.
26.What made the author lose a second chance to land a job?
A.His inexperience in consulting. B.An overstatement of his capability.
C.His lack of passion for the position. D.His bad performance in the interview.
27.Which words can best describe the author as a postdoc?
A.Devoted and ambitious. B.Knowledgeable and modest.
C.Courageous and warm-hearted. D.Responsible and thoughtful.
C
Few people realize it, but glaciers (冰川) are full of tiny air bubbles (气泡). They form as snow, accumulating over thousands of years, slowly packs into ice under its own weight — squishing the air that was trapped between snowflakes into tiny holes. Erin Pettit, a scientist, and her colleagues had suspected that bubbles could be important. To test this idea, they undertook a series of laboratory experiments.
They find that as the ice melted, the resulting fresh water rose, because it was less dense than the surrounding sea water. This created a rising current along the vertical face of the ice — a proof of what occurs at the front of a real tidewater glacier. When the glacial ice melted, the current that it produced was six times faster than what was seen with the bubble-free ice because the rising bubbles pulled the water up more quickly. The glacial ice melted 2.25 times more quickly than the bubble-free ice. “That’s a very powerful effect. If that’s the reality in nature, then it’s quite serious.”
The newly discovered bubble effect could explain some of that extra melting, says Mathieu Morlighem, a scientist. “It’s improving our understanding, but it’s not painting a darker picture of what’s happening today,” he says.
Pettit notes that in Alaska, many bays with tidewater glaciers have large populations of harbor seals. The animals shelter there while molting and raising babies. But in Glacier Bay, where the tidewater glaciers retreated (后退) many miles inland, the seal populations have declined. Pettit now suspects that the roaring rhythm of exploding bubbles provides a hiding place where seals can avoid detection by killer whale, which often find their victim by listening. The bubbles may mask the seals’ sounds — at least until the ice retreats out of hearing. This may turn out to be yet another way in which these tiny bubbles have surprisingly large-scale effects.
28.What does the underlined word “squishing” in paragraph I mean?
A.Absorbing. B.Pressing. C.Adding. D.Reducing.
29.What did Pettit and her colleagues find about the bubbles?
A.They produce a warm current of water.
B.They result in releasing more fresh water.
C.They have formed for thousands of years slowly.
D.They cause the ice in glaciers to melt more quickly.
30.What is Mathieu’s attitude towards the discovery?
A.Doubtful. B.Favorable. C.Disapproving. D.Cautious.
31.What effect does the last paragraph reflect?
A.The frog effect. B.The bucket effect.
C.The butterfly effect. D.The broken windows effect.

You may have recently seen a video from the Beijing Wildlife Zoo becoming a hit. What exactly was so interesting about this video? It shows a dog playing with big cats four to five times its size! Many people might wonder if this dog has a death wish, but it seems that the dog and the big cats are good friends.
The dog was actually raised alongside the lion and tiger cubs, making up an odd but loving family, according to zoo officials. As opposed to the common belief, cross-species friendship has been around for centuries. People have domesticated many animals, most notably cats and dogs, and formed bonds with them as pets. Perhaps you even have a pet yourself.
There are many other instances of cross-species friendships.
At an animal sanctuary in Santiago, Chile, a jaguar named Marina and a deer named Laura formed a friendship after they both came to the park. As neither animal had a mother, sanctuary staff said they instantly bonded when they met. Laura had been rescued from a slaughterhouse while Marina had been rescued from the street.
One possible explanation for these friendships is the environment of the zoo. Animals don’t hunt for their food and don’t need to worry about marking their territory or looking for mates in the way an animal in the wild would. “All those activities take time and energy, and if these needs are removed, the animals get bored,” Gordon Burghardt, a psychologist at the University of Tenessee, US, told The Atlantic magazine. “In this particular situation, the animal’s motivation to engage socially and playfully may be higher in its need hierarchy(等级)than eating.”
Marc Bekoff, former biology professor at the University of Colorado, US, told Slate magazine, “I think the choices animals make in cross-species relationships are the same as they’d make in same-species relationships. Some dogs don’t like every other dog. Animals are very selective about the other individuals who they let into their lives.”
32.What is the common opinion about the friendship between animals?
A.It’s easier for dogs and cats to become friends.
B.Animals tend to play with peers of the same species.
C.The friendship between animals is not solid and reliable.
D.It’s common that animals of different species can become friends.
33.Why are Marina and Laura mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To present a truth. B.To explain a phenomenon.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To provide a proof.
34.What’s the key factor of the animals’ friendship in the zoo according to Gordon Burghardt?
A.The existing tradition. B.The influence by mates.
C.The animals’ inner social drive. D.The animals’ raisers’ instruction.
35.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To appeal to people to treasure animals.
B.To inform readers of a special friendship.
C.To demonstrate the history of bringing up pets.
D.To compare friendship between cross-species and same-species.

What motivates you to work or study harder? Is it the thought of success and all the amazing things that you can achieve, or is it the fear of failure and worry about all the things that can go wrong for you? Leaders, managers, and teachers have often used one of these ideas to inspire people to work harder and achieve more. 36
A recent study looked at the effect of fear-based strategies on British secondary school students. They found that if a test is seen as important, and students are optimistic that they can succeed, then the fear of failure can be used successfully by teachers to motivate these learners. However, if students are not confident, fear-based approaches could cause feelings of anxiety. 37 The study also found that if students don’t care about the test, then, unsurprisingly, the fear of failure is not likely to motivate them.
38 It’s a fact that most new companies will fail. But does this motivate or prevent business people? Again, it’s not straightforward. The personal consequences of failure can be significant, and so founders may be motivated to work harder to avoid them. A study carried out on British and Canadian businessmen found that fear of failure can improve problem solving, as people are motivated to anticipate and resolve potential issues. 39 So it will help their business in the long run.
40 It can drive confident people to do better, but it can also increase our doubts and turn them into barriers.
A.It may motivate them more.
B.But is one better than the other?
C.Fear-based motivation is complicated.
D.Then it can in turn lead them to do worse.
E.Businessmen often run the risk of failure.
F.They may also be inspired to learn new things.
G.Is this idea beneficial for you to succeed?

As my parents worked a late shift, my three small sisters looked at me. “What’s for dinner?“ one of them said. The last time I made dinner was when I made pizza in high school. Now, I had three mouths to feed—ages two, six and nine—but I was short on ideas. Like a deer in headlights, I searched for a possible answer.
“Where’s the Twister (转盘游戏) game?”
“Not Twister,” Abby, my oldest sister, scolded, “Dinner. ”
I walked to the closet, pulled out the game. and tested the spinner (转盘). Then I slid a couple of sheets of paper between the plastic arrow and the cardboard base and divided it into four quadrant (象限). I looked at my sisters.
“Who wants chocolate?” Alice, my youngest sister, screamed happily. Abby crossed her arms. “Mum wouldn’t let that happen. ”
“Mum’s not here. ”I wrote in the upper right quadrant: chocolate. Andy, my middle sister, asked, “What are you doing?”
“You’ll see in a second.” I pointed at the second area. “How about noodles?” Alice started dancing around in a circle.
“When we get four options written on the spinner, we’ll spin to see what we do for dinner tonight.”
My youngest sister said, “Dress up like superheroes. ”
“Absolutely!” I wrote superheroes, with no idea how that would turn into a dinner idea, hoping the dial would land somewhere else. They debated the final section for a few seconds and then collectively decided on pizza. If they had suggested ”Run around at the mall“, I would have written it down. I set the spinner in the middle of the table. We gathered around the spinner, and I held up my hands. “We are going to spin it once, and whatever we land on、that’s what we’ll do tonight. ”
Abby shook her head. “I don’t think this is a good idea.” “It’s okay, honey. Mum will understand. ”
Alice yelled, “I want to spin it. ”Alice’s try sent the little, plastic arrow flying around and around until it landed on... pizza. Everyone shouted, “Pizza”, including me. I still had no idea what we were going to do. Abby looked at me. “But what are we going to do?”

W: Every year, I feel as though the months between September and Christmas go by in a flash.
M: I think it’s just a sign of getting older — time seems to speed up as we grow!
W: Ha-ha, maybe, but I never feel like this in spring or summer. The heat and sunshine make these seasons seem to last forever! I much prefer the autumn weather.
M: Oh, I see. So it’s just a simpler case of whatever you enjoy going by at a faster speed. It’s like how we felt when we were a kid — remember how fast weekends used to fly by compared to weekdays?
W: Hmm...yes. Saturday mornings were always filled with endless promises, but then they would disappear in minutes!
M: Exactly. And even car journeys! If I’m in a hurry, the journey seems so long. If I’m not rushing, it seems much shorter!
W: So it all comes down to how we consider and experience things.

M: Because the road is under repair, my journey to work has become so much longer.
W: Isn’t it quicker to take the train now, Matt?
M: Possibly, but I don’t want to. I’m surrounded by people all day — I enjoy being alone in my own car, even if I’m stuck in traffic!
W: Don’t you get bored? I hate just sitting there, waiting for traffic to move. I’d rather walk!
M: No, never. I listen to the radio and audiobooks. Sometimes I sing or listen to music.
W: You could do that on a train — except for the singing, obviously.
M: I know, Beth, but I don’t want to give up my private time. It’s very calming.
W: Okay, but on a train you can get a coffee and snacks! That’s got to be good, right?
M: Yep, but I always have a hot drink with me anyway, and I never travel without food!
W: What about the environmental aspect though? It’s greener to take the train.
M: You got me there. I feel truly conflicted about that. Maybe I need to examine my environmental morals a bit more.

W: Thank you for tuning into News Today. I am on the shore of the North Sea in England where I’m joined with John Hunt, a local fisherman. John, thank you for being with us today.
M: It’s a pleasure. Thank you for having me.
W: John, just behind us is where you saved a young boy yesterday. Tell us what happened.
M: I was walking my dog along the beach when I noticed something in the water. I could tell it was someone in trouble and my dog kept barking.
W: What did you do?
M: It all happened so fast. I just acted without thinking. Before I knew it, I was in the sea dragging the young boy out.
W: I believe his parents were so glad you saved him.
M: Yes, they were! They have a baby and they had just turned their back for a second as the baby needed changing. Once I got the boy to the shore, they ran over and thanked me. Luckily, the boy was fine.
W: Have they offered you a gift or some money as a thank you?
M: Well, they offered me a free stay in a hotel they own, but I refused. I’m just glad the boy is safe. That’s enough.
W: That’s really nice of you.

If you have studied and mastered a language to a high level, it’s a significant achievement that brings personal satisfaction and new opportunities. One of those opportunities might be the desire to live and work in the country of that language. However, regional accents can increase some difficulties, even for confident language learners. Even within a small country, accents can be various. For example, when people learn English, they tend to learn what is commonly referred to as the Queen’s English, Oxford English, BBC English, or Received Pronunciation, namely RP. All of these are typical standard British accents. It was previously believed that just 5% of the British population actually spoke with an RP accent, but the most recent studies suggest the true figure is even lower — only about 3% of the population speaks in RP. (18) So, there are around 40 different accents within the United Kingdom alone. Sometimes, even native speakers may find it challenging to understand a particularly strong accent. In such situations, a helpful approach is to politely request the speakers to repeat what they said, perhaps at a slower pace.

B
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.C 27.D
根据第二段“I’d spent hours preparing for the interview and in the end, I didn’t even know why I wasn’t successful! “How can I adapt my job search approach if I don’t know what went wrong?” (我花了几个小时准备面试,但最后我甚至都不知道为什么没有成功!如果我不知道哪里出了问题,我该如何调整我的求职策略呢?)”可知,作者希望在被拒绝的求职信中得到失败的原因,故选A项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“Again, the feeling I got from that rejection email appeared (又一次,那封拒绝邮件给我的感觉又出现了)”以及第二段“When I read it, I felt disappointed and angry (当我读它的时候,我感到失望和愤怒)”可知,作者在接到电话的时候,首先感到失望,故选B项。
根据第四段“The representative went on to tell me I hadn’t clearly shown my motivation for applying for the position and why I wanted to work for the company. The feedback was tough to hear. But I quickly realized they were right. After completing my Ph. D. in Germany, my top priority had been to find a position in Poland. So I wasn’t very selective about what I had applied for. The job at the consulting company was something I could do, but I didn’t feel passionate about it—and that was clearly shown in the interview process.
根据最后一段“Now, when early-career scientists interview for positions in my lab, I keep that experience in mind. If they don’t get the position, I will tell them why and what they can do to improve their job applications going forward. (现在,当职业早期的科学家面试申请我的实验室的职位时,我会记住那次经历。如果他们没有得到这个职位,我会告诉他们原因以及他们可以做些什么来改进今后的工作申请。)”可推理出作者有责任心且虑事周到,故选D项。

根据第一段前面的“They form as snow, accumulating over thousands of years, slowly packs into ice under its own weight (它们以雪的形式形成,经过数千年的积累,在自身重量的作用下慢慢地结成冰)”和后面的“the air that was trapped between snowflakes into tiny holes (被困在雪花之间的空气变成了小洞)”可知,最初形成的雪经过数千年累积,在自身负重下,缓慢被压成了冰,雪花之间困住的气体便在这个过程里被挤压进了细小的空隙之中。故选B项。
根据第二段的“When the glacial ice melted, the current that it produced was six times faster than what was seen with the bubble-free ice because the rising bubbles pulled the water up more quickly. The glacial ice melted 2.25 times more quickly than the bubble-free ice (当冰川的冰融化时,它所产生的电流比没有气泡的冰所产生的速度快六倍,因为上升的气泡使水上升的速度更快。冰川冰的融化速度是无气泡冰的2.25倍)”可知,当冰川融化时,它产生的水流流速是无气泡冰的6倍,融化速度是无气泡冰的2.25倍,说明气泡加快了冰川融化的速度。故选D项。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段的“The newly discovered bubble effect could explain some of that extra melting, says Mathieu Morlighem, a scientist. ‘It’s improving our understanding, but it’s not painting a darker picture of what’s happening today,’ he says. (科学家Mathieu Morlighem说,新发现的气泡效应可以解释部分额外的融化现象。他说,它提高了我们的认识,但并没有为目前的情况描绘出一幅更黑暗的图景)”可知,Mathieu对于气泡加快冰川融化速度这种说法,是持赞成态度的。故选B项。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“But in Glacier Bay, where the tidewater glaciers retreated (后退) many miles inland, the seal populations have declined.

根据文章第一段“Many people might wonder if this dog has a death wish, but it seems that the dog and the big cats are good friends.”(很多人可能会想这只狗是不是想死,但看起来这只狗和大型猫科动物是好朋友。)和第二段“As opposed to the common belief, cross-species friendship has been around for centuries.”(与人们普遍认为的不同,跨物种的友谊已经存在了几个世纪。)
根据文章第三段“There are many other instances of cross-species friendships.”(还有很多其它的跨物种友谊的例子。)和第四段“At an animal sanctuary in Santiago, Chile, a jaguar named Marina and a deer named Laura formed a friendship after they both came to the park.”(在智利圣地亚哥的一个动物保护区,一只名叫玛丽娜的美洲虎和一只名叫劳拉的鹿来到公园后建立了友谊。)
根据文章倒数第二段Gordon Burghardt的话“In this particular situation, the animal’s motivation to engage socially and playfully may be higher in its need hierarchy than eating.”(在这种特殊的情况下,动物参与社交和玩耍的动机可能比进食的需求层次更高。)及本段关键句“One possible explanation for these friendships is the environment of the zoo. Animals don’t hunt for their food and don’t need to worry about marking their territory or looking for mates in the way an animal in the wild would.”(对这些友谊的一个可能的解释是动物园的环境。
根据文章第三段“There are many other instances of cross-species friendships.”(还有很多其它的跨物种友谊的例子。)
36.根据“What motivates you to work or study harder? Is it the thought of success and all the amazing things that you can achieve, or is it the fear of failure and worry about all the things that can go wrong for you? Leaders, managers, and teachers have often used one of these ideas to inspire people to work harder and achieve more.”(是什么激励你更加努力地工作或学习?
38.根据下文“It’s a fact that most new companies will fail.”(大多数新公司都会失败,这是一个事实)可知,商人会冒着失败的风险。
39.根据上文的“people are motivated to anticipate and resolve potential issues.”(人们有动力预测和解决潜在的问题。)
40.根据后文“It can drive confident people to do better, but it can also increase our doubts and turn them into barriers”(它可以驱使自信的人做得更好,但也会增加我们的疑虑,并将其转化为障碍)可知,恐惧动机是比较复杂的,可能有益处也可能成为障碍。

He was 11 years old and often went fishing with his father in their boat.
On the day before the bass (鲈鱼) season 41 , he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch with worms. When his 42 doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. He very carefully 43 the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had 44 seen, but it was a bass.
The father lit a match and looked at his 45 . It would be two hours before the bass season opened. He looked at the fish and then at the boy.
“You’ll have to 46 it, son,” he said.
“Dad!” cried the boy.
“There will be other fish,” said his father.
“Not as big as this one,” cried the boy.
He 47 the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by his father’s firm voice that the decision was not 48 . He slowly worked the hook (钩子) out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water, and it 49 soon.
That was 34 years ago. Today, the boy is a successful architect in New York City. He had never again caught such a 50 fish as the one he landed that night long ago. But he does see that same fish — again and again — every time he comes up against a question of 51 .
As his father taught him, morals are simple 52 of right and wrong. It is the practice of morals that is difficult. Do we do right when no one is 53 ?
We should learn to follow the 54 as the father taught the son. It is a story we will proudly tell our children and grandchildren. It is not about how we had a chance to beat the system and took advantage of it, but about how we decide and how we do the right thing. The 55 to do right will live fresh in our memory.

Dear Ben,
I’m sorry to learn about your current trouble regarding the use of AI tools for your assignment. I can fully relate to your situation as I once faced similar temptations to manage heavy academic workloads. However, AI should never replace our own intellectual efforts.
As a scientist once said, “Our intelligence is what makes us human, and AI is an extension of that quality.” While AI can assist in certain areas, over reliance on it undermines the essence of learning and compromise academic integrity. Therefore, I suggest you improve your work without solely depending on AI tools and have an open conversation with your teacher, clarifying your intentions and demonstrating your commitment to genuine learning.
Learning is not just about completing tasks but also about the process of acquiring knowledge. Wish you all the best.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

“Let’s buy some materials for making pizza first.” I said. We got into the car and were off to the grocery store. Pushing the cart, I announced, “Everybody. find some things for making pizza. We’ll buy them and take them home for dinner.” They took off running. I shouted from behind, “Stay together.” Abby grabbed cheese for pizza. Alice picked up some vegetables. Andy got potato sauce. I picked up some powder. We piled back into the car full of anticipation. Back at the house, we unloaded the materials on the counter.
We were excited about preparing dinner by ourselves. My sisters were responsible for setting the table and I was in charge of making pizza. The kids grabbed plates, forks, knives, spoons, and cups, and then sat on their normal seats. A few minutes later, pizza was ready. The minute I served the big pizza, they competed to wolf down the food and soon it was eaten up. We tidied up the dishes together happily. Abby asked, “Can we do this again tomorrow?” “Sorry. guys. We’re only going to do this when Mum has to work late.” Andy rubbed his belly. “I hope she works late tomorrow. ”
