Does life sometimes seem to be full of impossible problems? How many times, for example, do you find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem”, or “I can’t get into the school team”? Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to the power of “yet”. By adding this simple word, you can change everything. “I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.” “I can’t get into the school team yet.” Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible. You can imagine those things happening.
I read about a school that has changed the way it marks its students’ exams. The school find out that the old “pass/fail” system wasn’t helping students’ motivation. If you passed, then great, but those students who didn’t pass often felt like failures. So now students who don’t pass the exams will not see a big red “F” on their papers—they see a “”Not yet” instead. ________. They haven’t reached the end, but they know that they are going the right way.
This kind of thinking is part of what experts call “having a growth mindset”. People with a growth mindset don’t concentrate on failure. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy to keep trying until they do. They enjoy the challenge and believe they can change. In contrast, people who just focus on the failure have what the experts call “a fixed mindset”. These people are always worried about failure and are happy to give up when things don’t go right. They don’t think that they are able to change. Clearly, it is better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.
But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can train yourself to develop a growth mindset. Remember that it all starts with questioning the things you believe about yourself. Stop believing that you can’t or you haven’t and realize that you just can’t or haven’t yet. Once you start doing this, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it before. It’s one small but very powerful word.
36. The effect of adding the word “yet” is that _________.
A. everything is possible
B. you are not alone
C. you are going to start to win
D. you won’t feel upset about your failures
37. The underlined word “motivation” is the closest to _________ in meaning.
A. the purpose of doing something
B. the process of doing something
C. the drive to do something
D. the courage to do something
38. Which of the following can be put in ________?
A. By doing this, the school can judge the students better.
B. Everyone has his own advantages and disadvantages.
C. In that way, the students feel that they are on a journey.
D. Then the students doubt whether it is worth fighting on.
39. According to the passage, which one of the following has a “growth mindset”?
A. Mary got the first prize in the competition. She was excited to tell her friends.
B. Grace couldn’t learn English well. She felt disappointed and wanted to drop it.
C. Joe failed to pass the exam. He didn’t want to have another try.
D. Peter’s team lost the soccer game, but they didn’t give up and kept practicing.
40. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Power of “Yet”
B. Growth or Fixed Mindset?
C. Nothing is Impossible
D. Achieve Success
【答案】36. D 37. C 38. C 39. D 40. A

【36题详解】
推理判断题。根据“By adding this simple word, you can change everything…Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible. You can imagine those things happening.”
根据“The school find out that the old ‘pass/fail’ system wasn’t helping students’ motivation. If you passed, then great, but those students who didn’t pass often felt like failures”可知学校发现,旧的“及格/不及格”制度对学生的学习积极性没有帮助,如果你通过了,那很好,但那些没有通过的学生经常觉得自己失败了,故此处画线部分意为“积极性”,即“做某事的动力”。故选C。
【38题详解】
推理判断题。根据“So now students who don’t pass the exams will not see a big red ‘F’ on their papers—they see a ‘Not yet’ instead...They haven’t reached the end, but they know that they are going the right way”可知现在没有通过考试的学生在试卷上不会看到一个红色的大“F”,而是看到一个“Not yet”,这就像一个旅程,他们还没有达到终点,但他们知道他们走的是正确的路,选项C“通过这种方式,学生们感觉自己正在旅行”符合语境。故选C。
【39题详解】
推理判断题。根据“People with a growth mindset don’t concentrate on failure. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy to keep trying until they do”可知,有成长心态的人不会专注于失败,他们不担心第一次做得不对,也很乐意继续努力,直到做到为止,故选项D“彼得的球队输了足球比赛,但他们没有放弃,继续练习”中的彼得具有“成长心态”,故选D。
【40题详解】
最佳标题题。根据“Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to the power of “yet”. By adding this simple word, you can change everything. ”以及全文可知,本文主要讲的是“yet”一词的影响力。故选A。
Scientists who study happiness have evidence (证据) to show that being kind to others can result in happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can lift a person’s mood (情绪), for example. Everyday life is full of chances for such actions, yet people do not always make the most use of them.
In studies, behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley and I examined a possible explanation: people who do kind acts underestimate (低估) how much the ones receiving kindness value their behavior.
In the experiments, about 1,000 people were asked to do some actions to make someone else feel good. We asked both the person performing the kind act and the one receiving it to answer some questions. The performers were asked to report their own experience and to guess how the receivers might feel. We wanted to understand how valuable people considered these acts to be, so both the performer and receiver had to rate (评分) how “big” the act seemed. In all cases, we compared the performer’s expectations of the receiver’s mood with the receiver’s actual experience.
For one, both performers and receivers experienced more positive moods. For another, the receivers felt much better than the kind performers expected. The receivers also rated these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did.
At first, we studied acts of the kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But we found that performers underestimated their positive influences on strangers as well. In one experiment, performers in a public park gave away hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day to people that just happened to be nearby. Again, the kind act brought more happiness than the performers expected.
These findings suggest that what might seem small could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. Considering these warm actions can improve our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can?
41. In the experiments, the performers did the following things EXCEPT that _________.
A. they reported their own experience
B. they guessed the receivers’ feelings
C. they rated how valuable their acts of kindness were
D. they compared the receivers’ expectations with their actual results

42. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refers to _________.
A. simple acts of kindness
