As a shift in the polar vortex (极地涡旋) swept across much of the US, many people in the country were hit with a sudden snap of cold. Heavy ice and snow coupled with fallen trees caused the outages in major cities, with companies unable to tell their customers when power will be back on.
Polar vortices were noticed long ago. But the first known use of the term “polar vortex” was in a magazine in 1853. Polar vorices are present year-round, but we don’t hear about them until they cause problems. They maintain freezing temperatures at the North and South poles by moving in tight counter-clockwise (逆时针方向) patterns. Polar vortices grow stronger in winter and weaken in summer. They are kept in place at the poles by another atmospheric current (大气流) called the jet stream (急流). However, when the jet streams weaken, the cold winds of the polar vortex are pushed southwards and it is during this time that people begin to pay attention!
In Texas, roads froze over, causing six traffic deaths, and many schools were shut down. People are not the only Earthlings to struggle with the cold. Crops and animals are also freezing. This could have major consequences, especially if herds of cattle die. If snow blocks cattle, the animals can’t reach basic necessities like food and fresh water.
On a brighter note, some Texas cities were more prepared than others. For instance, Amarillo, which is located in North Texas, so they are more accustomed to colder temperatures. Amarillo is outstanding because the city was redesigned to stand up to strong winter storms. Officials have spread out fire stations to increase coverage of first responders, employed modified dump trucks for clearing ice, and upgraded civic centers to provide protection during storms. Hopefully, other Texas cities will follow the good example set by Amarillo!
4. What does the underlined word “outages” refer to?
A. Traffic jams. B. Snow removal. C. Power cuts. D. Traffic accidents.
5. What can we learn about polar vortices?
A. They grow stronger in summer. B. They are affected by jet streams.
C. They were first observed in 1853. D. They move in a clockwise direction.
6. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The definition of the polar vortex. B. The characteristics of the polar vortex.
C. The ways to deal with the polar vortex. D. The serious impact made by the polar vortex.
7. Why is Amarillo impressive?
A. Because it is located in the north of Texas.
B. Because it sets an example for other cities.
C. Because it has been upgraded and modernized on a regular basis.
D. Because it has taken effective measures to resist winter storms.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。极地涡旋会给人类的生命财产带来巨大的威胁,但是好在人类已采取有效措施抵御冬季风暴。
【4题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段最后一句中的“with companies unable to tell their customers when power will be back on.(公司无法告知客户电力何时恢复)”可知,严重的冰雪加上倒下的树木导致了主要城市的停电,outages意为“断电”和C项意思相近。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“They are kept in place at the poles by another atmospheric current (大气流) called the jet stream (急流). However, when the jet streams weaken, the cold winds of the polar vortex are pushed southwards and it is during this time that people begin to pay attention!(它们被另一种被称为急流的大气流固定在两极。然而,当急流减弱时,极地涡旋的冷风被推向南方,正是在这段时间,人们开始注意!)”可知,极地涡旋受到急流的影响。故选B。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段“In Texas, roads froze over, causing six traffic deaths, and many schools were shut down. People are not the only Earthlings to struggle with the cold. Crops and animals are also freezing. This could have major consequences, especially if herds of cattle die. If snow blocks cattle, the animals can’t reach basic necessities like food and fresh water.(在德克萨斯州,道路结冰,造成6人死亡,许多学校关闭。人类并不是地球上唯一与寒冷作斗争的生物。农作物和动物也在受冻。这可能会产生重大后果,特别是如果成群的牛死亡。如果大雪阻挡了牛群,这些动物就无法获得食物和淡水等基本必需品。)”可知,倒数第二段主要讲的是极地涡旋造成的严重影响。故选D。

When the 2024 Summer Olympics kicked off in Paris, the city went for the wow factor, for the opening ceremony didn’t take place in a stadium but — bucking tradition — outside on the River Seine. Bathed in myth and memory, the Seine is the lifeblood of the city that sprang up on its banks. From its source in Burgundy, the Seine flows 483 miles to reach the sea at Le Havre, with the capital sitting nearly in the middle. The River’s layout within Paris has undergone changes over time, its course altered by constant floods, its branches and channels ultimately flowing into the snakelike riverbed we know today.
It was near the Seine’s banks at Bercy that evidence of the city’s first human settlement was discovered. The earliest fixed settlement was the Neolithic site at the Bercy archaeological dig from 1991 to 1992. “Situated on a branch, or canal, of the Seine, the village had been well preserved under layers of sediment left by floods,” says Sylvie Robin, a museum director.
The city’s beloved stone quays were built over the centuries for the city’s beautification. The quays also served to channel the river and attempt to constrain flooding. As the mighty river fueled industry and empire, dams, locks, bridges, and later factories forever altered its flowing patterns.
For millennia, life was lived on the river. The Seine’s banks were a gathering place for work and leisure. However, a different approach to urban planning in the 20th century began to separate the public from the river. In the 1960s, highways were constructed directly on the water’s edge. The quays even changed into parking lots. The tide turned in 2013 when the city government decided to pedestrianize the motorway on the Left Bank. Cyclists and walkers returned to the quays, enjoying new facilities such as climbing walls and floating gardens. A riverside park on the Right Bank’s motorway followed in 2016. The much boasted $1.5 billion Olympic Games river cleanup project is the peak of years of investment.
8. What does the underlined word “bucking” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Integrating. B. Resisting. C. Highlighting. D. Embracing.
9. What can we learn about the River Seine according to the text?
A. The earliest settlements were unearthed along the Seine.
B. The River Seine, flowing through Paris, shaped the city.
C Floods rarely affected the River Seine and its population.
D. The Olympics made the Seine a popular tourist attraction.
10. Why were the stone quays built along the River Seine?
①To defend against attacks. ②To develop the transport.
③To control the floods. ④ To channel the river.
⑤To beautify the surroundings. ⑥To support the Olympics.
A. ①②④ B. ②③⑥ C. ③④⑤ D. ①⑤⑥
11. What does the last paragraph highlight?
A. People used to have fun living along the Seine.
B. Urbanization has transformed life on the Seine.
C. Human activities harmed the Seine’s ecosystem.
D. The Paris government aims to energize the Seine.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. D

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“It was near the Seine’s banks at Bercy that evidence of the city’s first human settlement was discovered. The earliest fixed settlement was the Neolithic site at the Bercy archaeological dig from 1991 to 1992. “Situated on a branch, or canal, of the Seine, the village had been well preserved under layers of sediment left by floods,” says Sylvie Robin, a museum director.(在贝尔西的塞纳河岸边附近,人们发现了这座城市第一个人类定居点的证据。最早的固定定居点是1991年至1992年贝尔西考古挖掘的新石器时代遗址。“这个村庄位于塞纳河的一条支流或运河上,在洪水留下的沉积物层下保存得很好,”博物馆馆长西尔维·罗宾说)”可知,流经巴黎的塞纳河塑造了这座城市。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The city’s beloved stone quays were built over the centuries for the city’s beautification. The quays also served to channel the river and attempt to constrain flooding. As the mighty river fueled industry and empire, dams, locks, bridges, and later factories forever altered its flowing patterns.(这座城市备受喜爱的石码头是几个世纪以来为美化城市而建造的。这些码头也起到了引导河流的作用,并试图控制洪水。这条强大的河流为工业和帝国提供了动力,水坝、水闸、桥梁和后来的工厂永远地改变了它的流动模式)”可知,沿着塞纳河建造石头码头是为了控制洪水、疏通河道以及美化环境。故选C。
【11题详解】

Misinformation and other attempts at misleading the public are common on social media. ___16___

This is especially true if it comes from a source you trust. If you want to spread truth, you need to assume that other people aren’t perfect and may make mistakes. ___17___
· Look for the sources.
Mainstream news is as good as the sources it relies on. Anonymous (匿名的) sources, or stories coming from only a single source are more suspect than stories with multiple sources of confirmation. ___18___ Many important leaks and stories have come from single anonymous sources.
· Consider the story’s agenda.
Stories are colored by the agendas of their writers. News organizations typically operate for money, and part of their brand (and thus their profits) lies in their accuracy. However, many news groups tailor their content to particular sections of customers, and thus are more likely to cover stories with a particular perspective. ___19___ Consequently, the stories are turned into preference with the preconceptions of their target audience.
·___20___
Injustices are things that make any ethical person upset or angry. A story that promotes emotion is not automatically false just because it arouses strong feelings. Unfortunately, cheaters know the power of emotion and use that tool in their work. Therefore, fact check before you share.

B. This can weaken their accuracy.
C. It doesn’t mean that they are false.

The way people spend their holidays changed a lot from 2005 to 2015.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The rate of 2015 (22%) doubled that of 2005 (11%). We are sure that the number will further increase for Chinese people’s incomes continue to rise, and more and more people can afford journeys abroad.
At the same time, the seaside attracted a lot of people. However, the rate slightly dropped from 38% in 2005 to 31% in 2015, the reason for which lies in the fact that sea water is being polluted. The polluted seaside is likely to drive more visitors away.
The year 2015 witnessed a sharp increase in the number of people who went climbing and camping. The rate of 2015 was three times higher than that of 2005. The reason is that more and more people are eager to get close to nature. It is not only beneficial to their health but also to their peace of mind.

A. They grow stronger in summer. B. They are affected by jet streams.

C
D. Embracing.

10. Why were the stone quays built along the River Seine?

A. Don’t view stories with caution.
B. This can weaken their accuracy.
C. It doesn’t mean that they are false.
D In this way you will be more cautious.
