There are different types of languages. Many students find it difficult to learn a foreign language, but do you know we have been “bilingual talents(双语人才) ” for a long time? We are speaking in our local dialect(方言) and using Putonghua as a foreign language like English.
Zhang Tingting, 14, from Guangzhou, is such a talent. “I’ve spoken Cantonese(粤语) at home, but Putonghua in the school since I was in primary school, ” she said. “We are now encouraged to use Putonghua in classrooms. ”
Now more and more students move to Guangzhou and study here. A report shows that only a few Guangzhou students can fully understand their local dialect. And they speak Putonghua only at school. Many people are worried that the local culture is dying as the dialect is no longer popular. A famous language learner says, “The most vivid words and expressions are born of dialects. You can have clear pictures in your mind(大脑)after hearing the words. ” Zhang Tingting fully agrees with his ideas. She even finds it difficult and strange to use Putonghua to express some words.
Some cities have found this problem and taken action to save their dialects now. As we all know, some primary schools in Shanghai have asked students to speak Shanghai dialect four days a month. Starting from this year, there are almost 30 Guangzhou kindergartens encouraging children to speak their dialects during breaks.
However, speaking dialects doesn’t mean we should say NO to Putonghua. Dialects are part of a multi-cultural society and make our words more beautiful.
