Make lemonade (柠檬汁) when life gives you lemons (柠檬) . Besides happiness, trouble will also be part of life. It’s how you choose to react to your situations that make the difference. If you look at something hard enough, you’ll see the positive side of it. Do what you love doing. Do you have a lifelong dream or desire? If so, start working towards it. Taking baby steps towards a goal will help you feel like you’re accomplishing something. You’ll find drive and determination to reach that goal when it’s something you love doing. Use one of your talents. One reason why so many people are unhappy is that they’re not doing what they’re called to do with their God-given talents. Each of us has a purpose in life. You have natural talents to help you achieve your purpose, so use your talents effectively. Call a friend who you know is positive and cheerful. Talk about your feelings and listen to their advice. Usually, people allow themselves to go deeper and deeper into self-depression. The truth is that you don't have to be sad. You can decide to be happy. You just have to make up your mind to do so. Gratitude (感激, 感谢) is the quickest cure for sadness. When you focus on what’s wrong with your life, you forget to look at what’s right and good. Take a step back and reflect on your life. Do you have children or family to be thankful for? Yes, they may not be the person we’d like them to be, but imagine life without them. Now, be thankful that you have them in your life. Let your feelings out on paper. Since starting to learn, I have made good progress. The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is a test of Chinese language for non-native speakers. In July 2020, I passed my HSK3 exam with a score of 100 percent. I am now almost ready to start HSK5. Learning to speak Chinese isn’t as insurmountable as I once thought. When I speak to native (当地的) speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me. I also find it not too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. I find studying the language relaxing and worthwhile, particularly writing the characters. The thing I find most challenging is listening because native speakers talk at such a speed (速度). I can’t always understand what’s been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this greatly. Despite my progress, it has taken a lot of hard work. Furthermore, there is a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency. The key to progress is to be patient . The satisfaction (满意) that comes from simple things like ordering food (点餐) in Chinese, buying things on the Internet or communicating with a taxi driver makes all the hard work worth it. My biggest takeaway from learning Chinese is that it’s not only double but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a colorful and beautiful country. Considering where I am now, compared to two years ago, as long as I keep studying hard, I can image a time when I’ll be able to read famous Chinese novels not in English but in the original text. So, to all my non-Chinese friends, I always say “Don’t give up. Embrace (拥抱) the challenge.” 41. What is the author’s regret? A. He had a new challenge. B. He decided to begin his language journey. C. He didn’t start learning Chinese earlier D. He passed his HSK3 exam. 42. What does the underlined word “insurmountable” mean in paragraph 2? A. upset. B. Possible. C. Comfortable. D. Difficult. 43. Which one is the most challenging for the author? A. Writing characters. B. Taking part in HSK exams. C. Listening to the native speaking. D. Speaking to a taxi driver. 44. Why does the author think learning Chinese is satisfying? A. It can make the author proud. B. It makes the author know more Chinese characters. C. It can be useful in daily life. D. It makes the author more competitive. 45. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Passing exams isn’t a piece of cake B. Learning Chinese isn’t unbeatable C. Explore the historical and cultural country D. Deepen understanding of Chinese culture 【答案】41. C 42. D 43. C 44. C 45. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述的是作者自己学习汉语的经历和感受。 【41题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“With a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier.(怀着对新挑战的渴望,我决定开始我的语言之旅,我唯一的遗憾是没有早点开始)”可知,作者渴望新的挑战,决定开始语言之旅,唯一的遗憾是没有早点开始,所以,作者后悔的是没有早点开始学习汉语。故选C项 【42题详解】 词义猜测题。根据划线词后的“When I speak to native (当地的) speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me. I also find it not too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters.(当我和母语者用汉语交谈时,他们几乎都能理解我。 根据第二段中的“The thing I find most challenging is listening because native speakers talk at such a speed (速度).(我发现最具挑战的事是听力,因为母语者们语速如此之快)”可知,因为母语者说的语速很快,所以,作者认为学习汉语时最困难的部分是听母语者讲话。故选C项。 【44题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The satisfaction (满意) that comes from simple things like ordering food (点餐) in Chinese, buying things on the Internet or communicating with a taxi driver makes all the hard work worth it.(一些小事带来的满足感,比如用中文点餐,在网上购物或是和出租车司机交流,让我感到所有的辛苦都是值得的)”可知,作者认为用中文点餐,在网上购物或者与出租车司机交流这些小事带来很多的满足感,由此可知,因为日常生活中能使用汉语,所以作者认为学习中文令他感到满足。 C You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Maybe your friends from middle school are going to a different high school. Even if you know other freshmen (新生), you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upperclassmen (高年级的学生). How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces? Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts. It is helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but you can also get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces. When you talk to people at orientation you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships. The work in high school is something freshmen are probably anxious about. The work in high school builds on what you learned in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help. High school also has more after-school activities than middle school did, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things. Like many young athletes, she had Olympic dreams, but a serious illness kept her from competing in the Games. The disappointment didn’t stop her from going forward. Instead, she became interested in marathon swimming. A brilliant athlete, she was well-conditioned for spending long periods of time in the water. As a long-distance swimmer, she would compete against herself and the obstacles presented (呈现) by distance, danger, cold, and exhaustion (精疲力竭) . For ten years Nyad devoted herself to becoming one of the world’s best long-distance swimmers. In 1970, she swam a ten-mile marathon in Lake Ontario, setting the women’s record for the course. In 1972 she set another record by swimming 102.5 miles from an island in the Bahamas to the coast of Florida. Then she broke a third record when swimming around Manhattan Island in 1975. Nyad attempted to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba in 1978. Though the span of water is less than 100 miles wide, it is rough and dangerous. You can choose to be happy no matter what challenges life brings you. Let the following simple advice to guide (指导) you back to your happy state (状态). Often you’ll find that just getting your feelings down on paper will allow you to work through them, helping you feel better about yourself and your beautiful life! 36. A. excited B. depressed C. positive D. kind-hearted B With a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier. Deepen understanding of Chinese culture C You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. Middle school taught you the basics of academic knowledge, time management, and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. High school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible. 46. According to the passage, when they come to the school on the first day freshmen usually feel ________. A. proud B. nervous C. excited D. afraid 47. What are freshmen probably worried about? A. The learning task. B. The training in the freshman orientation. C. The ability to make friends. D. The relationship with teachers. 48. What can be a proper approach when freshmen have difficulties in dealing with some work? A. Attend the Orientation Day. B. Turn to your teachers. C. Concern your classmates. D. Take part in after-school activities. 49. After-school activities mainly help students ________. A. build up healthy bodies B. develop friendships C. develop their interests D. improve their learning ability 50. The last paragraph is mainly about ________.
