A six-year-old longing to keep a unicorn in her backyard figured she’d get the hard part out of the way first.
Last November, Madeline wrote a letter to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control with a straightforward request. “Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one. Please send me a letter in response.”
Director Mayeda replied two weeks later. The department does in fact license unicorns, she said, under certain conditions. Those include polishing the unicorn’s horn at least once a month with a soft cloth, feeding it watermelon at least once a week, covering it with only nontoxic and biodegradable sparkles and giving it regular access to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows. And, because unicorns are indeed very rare to find, the department is also giving Madeline a toy unicorn to keep her company during her search, as a token of appreciation.
“It is always rewarding to hear from young people who thoughtfully consider the requirements of providing a loving home for animals,” Mayeda wrote in the letter. “I like your sense of responsible pet ownership to seek permission in advance to keep a unicorn in Los Angeles County.”
Mayeda told the Washington Post that this is the first time the department has received a request for a license for a unicorn or any mythical creature. They were impressed with the first-grader for wanting to ask permission in the first place, and doing her research to work out how to go about that. She and her colleagues deal with a lot of “life-and-death” issues on the job, whether that’s seeing cases of animal abuse or animals hurting people or making decisions about having to put down dangerous or sick animals. So Madeline’s letter has considerably brightened their spirits, and she is due to visit the department this week to discuss her unicorn license application. Safe to say, she’s in for a magical surprise.
4. Why did Madeline write the letter?
A. To apply to visit a unicorn. B. To learn to provide animal care.
C. To ask permission to keep a pet. D. To figure out how to find a unicorn.
5. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Her application was disapproved. B. Requirements should be met for the license.
C. She was presented with a live unicorn. D. Guidance was given for her search.
6. Which of the following best describes Mayeda?
A. Imaginative. B. Sensitive. C. Flexible. D. Convincing.
7. Why does the department think the letter “has brightened their spirits”?
A. Because it is the first application letter for a pet.
B. Because animal protection is a life-and-death issue.
C. Because they are worn out with their daily work.
D. Because they are touched with the girl’s deeds.
C
Among bearing a reputation for various characteristics ranging from the good to the bad, millennials(千禧一代) have notably been labeled the “job-hopping” generation. A Deloitte survey revealed that 49% of millennials might quit their jobs within the next two years. While some from older generations may interpret this as a sign of laziness, a deeper look suggests more complex motivations.
At first glance, there are a variety of reasons and circumstances that may lead a person to job hop occasionally. However, beyond the conventional reasons like obtaining better salaries or greater job stability, many millennials have been increasingly motivated by value-driven goals. Surveys show that some go to the extent of suffering pay cuts to pursue positions that provide better learning opportunities. Additionally, some even quit their positions for companies which are aligned with their value system better. In response to such a trend, employers are taking steps to improve workplace culture and to pay more attention to the professional growth and development of individuals.
Visibly, Millennials’ boldness in pursuing new job opportunities is also shaped by emerging economic trends and novel business models, such as the gig economy, where self-employed and temporary work caters to those who value flexibility and work-life balance. Additionally, social media has created new career paths, from blogging to content creation, leading more millennials to leave traditional desk jobs for unconventional careers. Hence, one can’t say for certain that job-hopping indicates laziness. Instead, it shows millennials’ wandering off the beaten track to explore new opportunities and development.
However, job-hopping remains controversial. Some employers appreciate the diversity in experience and skills job-hopping brings about, while others view it negatively, seeing it as a lack of commitment. There is concern that millennials, raised in relatively prosperous times, may possess less patience and resilience. Yet, at a materialistic society, millennial generation’s pursuit of meaning in their careers offers inspiration. They should never be discouraged to define new horizons of success when their career decisions are driven by healthy ambition and an appetite for upskilling.
8 What phenomenon does the first paragraph describe?
A. Millennials switch jobs frequently. B. Millennials are reluctant to seek jobs.
C. Millennials have fewer job opportunities. D. Millennials are particular about their jobs.
9. The underlined phrase “are aligned with” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by .
A. go beyond B. correspond to C. conflict with D. compete against
10. The emerging gig economy attracts Millennials in that it allows for .
A. decent income B. high social status
C. definite freedom D. self-paced schedule
11. What is the author’s view on the job-hopping generation?
A. They are characterized by laziness. B. They lack diverse work experience.
C. They prioritize individual fulfillment. D. They should bear more responsibility.
D
Shadows are often associated with darkness and uncertainty. Now, researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) are giving shadows a positive spin by demonstrating a way to harness this common but often overlooked optical (光学的) effect to generate electricity.
The team created a device called a shadow-effect energy generator (SEG), which makes use of the contrast in illumination (照明) between lit and shadowed areas to generate electricity. It’s made up of a series of thin strips of gold film on a silicon layer, which is then placed on a flexible plastic base.
“In conventional optoelectronics (光电子学) where a steady source of light is used to power devices, shadows are undesirable, since they degrade the performance of devices. In this work, we took advantage of the illumination contrast caused by shadows as an indirect source of power. The contrast in illumination causes a voltage (电压) difference between the shadow and illuminated sections, resulting in an electric current. This novel concept of harvesting energy in the presence of shadows is unprecedented.” explained research team leader Professor Tan Swee Ching.
Mobile electronic devices such as smart phones, smart glasses and e-watches require efficient and continuous power supply. As these devices are worn both indoors and outdoors, wearable power sources that could harness surrounding light can potentially improve the function of these devices. While commercially available solar cells can perform this role in an outdoor environment, their energy harvesting efficiency drops significantly under indoor conditions where shadows are persistent. This new approach to maximizing the efficiency of energy harvesting is both exciting and timely.
“When the whole SEG is under illumination or in shadow, the amount of electricity generated is very low or none at all. When a part of the SEG is illuminated, a significant electrical output is detected. We also found that the best surface area for electricity generation is when half of the SEG is illuminated and the other half in shadow, as this gives enough area for charge generation and collection respectively.” said co- team leader Professor Andrew Wee.
The NUS researchers are also looking at developing wearable SEGs attached to clothing to harvest energy during normal daily activities. Another promising area of research is the development of low- cost SEG for efficient harvesting of energy from indoor lighting.
12. Why are shadows considered undesirable in traditional optoelectronics?
A. They serve no useful purpose. B. They weaken device performance.
C. They are rare in outdoor conditions. D. They are difficult to control or predict.
13. What do we know about the SEG?
A. It’s specially designed to work in open areas.
B. It will replace existing solar cells once and for all.
C. It’s most effective when fully positioned in light or in shadow.
D. It requires a balance of light and shadow to maximize electricity generation.
14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The SEG is unlikely to work efficiently in dark places.
B. The researchers are looking to reduce the cost of the SEG.
C. The development of SEG is limited by its high production cost.
D. The researchers are developing wearable SEGs attached to smart phones.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. An innovative use of shadows to generate electricity.
B. The problems with shadows in conventional optoelectronics.
C. The challenges of adapting technology for wearable devices.
D. A need for efficient power supply in mobile electronic devices.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Every day, we face a series of opportunities to do the right thing. Sometimes we seize(抓住) those moments; other times, we don’t. ____16____ And what drives some people to take the moral high ground?
Jessie Sun interviewed 952 people about the motivations(动机) for moral behavior and the changes they wished to make in their lives in order to become more morally good.
When we think about morals, we often think about making “personal sacrifices(牺牲)” for the greater good. In Sun’s study, she found that nearly half of the participants said they were most encouraged to become more moral for themselves. ____17____ And fewer participants said that they most wanted to benefit friends and people in general.
Moreover, many people believe that acting more morally—for example, being more thoughtful, more open-minded—would increase their own well-being. The more they believed that their moral change would have positive results for themselves, the more they reported being encouraged to make that change. ____18____ That was the most surprising finding in the study.
____19____ Interestingly, participants generally expected possible harms to themselves and others if they were honest. You can imagine that some people regularly tell white lies to save other people’s feelings, and they believe it would be hurtful if they were honest.
Researchers also asked people about the things they’d like to improve about themselves. If they’re extremely shy, they usually want to become more comfortable in social situations. But if they aren’t especially honest or thoughtful, they usually won’t improve those aspects of their lives on purpose. ____20____
A. How can we become more moral?
B. So, why do we make these choices?
C. Being moral just isn’t what most people consider first.
D. Being moral means different things to different people.
E. But people see some disadvantages of being moral, too.
F. In short, many people want to become more moral for their own benefits.
G. Sixteen percent said that they most wanted to become more moral for their family.

The sun was setting over Springdale, casting shadows across the busy community center. A group of teenagers, the members of the Springdale Youth Committee, gathered at a table. They looked determined and worried. Among them was Emily, a smart but often unnoticed girl who loves helping others.
For weeks, they had been organizing a fundraising event for the local homeless shelter, as the shelter struggled to assist the increasing number of individuals seeking help. The big day was one week away, and everything was set — until they discovered another group had a similar charity event on the same day. This could divide the people who might come and the donations they hoped to get.
“We can’t change the date now,” said Tom, a senior member, his voice filled with frustration. “We’ve already sent out invitations, and the place is booked.” Emily listened quietly to the discussion. She knew changing the date wasn’t possible, but she also realized competing with another worthy cause could hurt both sides.
After the meeting ended without a solution, Emily decided to take action. She spent the next day looking into ways to work with the other group, hoping to find a way that would help both the homeless shelter and the other cause.
The next day, she came to the committee with a suggestion. “What if we join our events?” she asked. “We could share resources, work together on promoting, and most importantly, make sure both causes are supported by the community.”
The members looked at each other, some doubtful, others interested. “That’s a great idea, Emily, but how will we get them to agree?” Laura, another member, asked. Emily had already thought this through. “I’ll talk to their organizer and show them the benefits of a joint event.” She knew the path ahead would be challenging, but she was determined to make it happen for Springdale and its people.

【46题答案】
【答案】According to the survey conducted in our school, 43% of the students prefer to read science books, followed by comics readers, which accounts for 26%. 18% of the students enjoy reading sports and music books while 13% of the students like to read classical books.
It is encouraging to see so many students reading regularly, as reading can improve comprehension skills and cultivate imagination. However, we should also encourage students to read books outside their comfort zone to broaden their horizons and explore new perspectives.
From my point of view, I suggest our school organize book clubs or reading groups, where students can discuss and share their thoughts. It can stimulate their curiosity and critical thinking and enhance their social skills.

The committee agreed to let Emily lead this effort. As expected, the idea of partnering with the rival organization met with opposition. The other group, protective of their previous hard work, was initially reluctant to accept Emily’s proposal. They worried that their unique voice would be lost in the mix, insisting that their event should stand alone. Emily, unshaken, continued to highlight the benefits of partnership, emphasizing the potential for more donations and increased community involvement.
