Essential Tips for Renting a Car in Germany
Planning to rent a car and fly down the German motorway? Gather top tips here and find the best rental car for your trip through Germany.
Quick Tips
Search for rental cars before you fly to Germany, and book your car in advance. You will get better rates than booking upon arrival. German cars usually come with a manual transmission(手动挡). If you prefer an automatic transmission, ask the rental company and most can accommodate you. Rental cars are available at all airports and most major rail stations as well as locations in major cities.
Driver’s Requirements
To rent a car in Germany, you need a valid (有效的)driver’s license from your home state or province. Visitors may also consider getting an International Driving Permit as a companion document. However, it is not required for Germany. If you would like to continue to drive after six months to one year in Germany, you must obtain a German license. The legal driving age in Germany is 18, but usually, drivers have to be over 21 to rent a car.
Charges
Base rates vary wildly depending on the length of time of rental, the age of driver, destination, and location of rental. Shop around to find the best price. Note that charges usually don’t include the 16% Value Added Tax(VAT), registration fee, or any airport fees. These additional fees may equal up to 25% of the daily rental.
21. Why is it advised to book a car before arriving in Germany?
A. To keep the car available in major cities. B. To get a relatively low price of car rental.
C. To enjoy a high standard of rental service. D. To rent a car with an automatic transmission.
22. What is necessarily required to rent a car in Germany?
A. Obtaining a valid German license. B. Having one-year driving experience.
C. Being at least twenty-one years old. D. Getting an International Driving Permit.
23. Which factor may influence the base rental charges?
A. VAT. B. Parking fee. C. Registration fee. D. Rental duration.

A bunch of strangers showed up at the gym in the early morning of the last Sunday of April. A few athletes were already stretching(拉伸) their arms, but most of us could barely focus. As I was burning off last night’s wrong decision-a big meal, I spotted a poster about a gym’s 21-day workout challenge, and I immediately signed up. I always wanted to train fora marathon, so I considered this as my warm-up. Besides, I needed to stop being lazy and this was my chance to make a change.
It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise routines and diet restrictions(限制) wouldn’t be easy. I stuck to working out 30 minutes a day, and I didn’t disturb(干扰) my normal routine. Instead, I had to be faced with the tough work of being more creative in my spare time, thus breaking some bad habits.
Overcoming weaknesses with willpower was my goal for the next part of the journey. But the difficult part about making a challenge is realizing that “wanting” and “doing” are two very different things. Just like a career, you have to physically work for it rather than just wait for it to happen. But that’s hard. Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. However, finally I overcame that negative thought and kept working out.
At the end of the challenge, I learned something even more important: Feeling the results is better than seeing them. I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. I even felt a little smarter as I researched which foods were better for my body, and learned how to make healthier meals. I felt a sense of accomplishment(成就), too, because even though I wanted to give up dozens of times, I didn’t. I felt my waist got smaller and my arms got stronger, and I no longer felt guilty after having a piece of cake or a drink.
24. What was the author’s wrong decision?
A. Going to the gym early. B. Training for a marathon.
C. Eating a lot the previous night. D. Stopping being lazy for a change.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Some of the author’s bad habits.
B. Some ways of the author’s killing his spare time.
C. The importance of sticking to the normal daily routine.
D. The difficulty of the author’s keeping on with the workout plan.
26. What does the underlined word “sabotage” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. stop B. hear C. improve D. recognize
27. What did the author learn from the workout challenge?
A. Eating healthy food is more important than exercising.
B. Overcoming a challenge could bring good feelings to him.
C. It’s more important to see what he likes than just feel it.
D. There was no need to feel guilty about things he disliked to do.
C
Honey is a sweet treat that most people take for granted. But it is more than just a topping for cakes or a sweetener for tea. It’s a miracle of sorts.
Honey is the only food product that humans eat that is made by an insect. Even with all our technical abilities, no one has figured out how to make artificial honey. There’s really no substitute (替代品).
A single pound of honey may require a beehive of up to 60,000 bees to visit two million flowers. No wonder some people call it liquid gold! Although amber-colored clover honey tends to be most common, honey comes in a variety of shades and flavors, depending on the flowers that the bees gather nectar(花蜜)from.
Honey has been used throughout history in a number of ways. One of the most remarkable things about it is that it never goes bad. It may crystallize, meaning that it becomes solid in parts, but simply warming it slightly will melt the crystals and return the honey to its liquid form.
No one knows exactly how long honey has been used by humans, but Spanish cave paintings dated at 7,000BC show early evidence of beekeeping. Honey was also used by the ancient Egyptians as a sweetener, as a gift to the gods, and even as an element used to create mummies. Honey has been found inside the Egyptian pyramids, and although that honey was more than 3,000 years old, it would still taste like honey and be safe to eat. No other food has such lasting power!
Besides its many uses as a sweetener, honey has long been used as a medicinal remedy (疗法). Because it’s difficult for any kind of bacteria(细菌)to survive in honey, it makes a perfect barrier on cuts and can prevent infection. Honey is also an effective remedy to relieve a painful throat. It has even been found to be as effective in easing coughs in children.
The next time a bee flies through your garden or you spread some honey on a piece of toast, think about the miracle of honey.
28. According to the passage, what makes honey unique among the foods that humans eat?
A. Its various shades. B. Its natural creation.
C. Its delightful sweetness. D. Its remarkable history.
29. Why does the author mention the honey in the Egyptian pyramids?
A. To illustrate that it lasts a long time . B. To show the cleverness of Egyptians.
C. To compare it with the honey in Spain. D. To inform that it originates from Egypt.
30. What is one of the medicinal uses of honey?
A. Promoting bacterial growth. B. Curing throat pain.
C. Preventing infection in wounds. D. Resisting common colds.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Honey: a Sweet Miracle of Nature B. Honey: a Timeless Treasure
C. Honey: a Natural Medicinal Remedy D. Honey: a Common Sweetener
D
The playground at Lake County Intermediate School in Leadville, Colorado, underwent a much-needed makeover(翻 新 )in the spring of 2018. The old equipment, including a few swings, a damaged basketball court, and a play area of dirt, was replaced with a new setup.
Having noticed the problem, the local community set up colorful slides, double swings, a new basketball court and a grassy play area. Kids also gained access to a variety of loose equipment, such as balls and Hula-Hoops.
The makeover not only improved the playground’s appearance but also had a significant impact on children’s activity levels. To assess the impact, Elena Kuo, a senior consultant at Washington Health Research Institute, and her team conducted pre-and post-intervention observations and follow-up assessments one year later. They found that the share of children engaging in energetic physical activity doubled following the makeover. Remarkably, this increased activity level lasted even a year later.
“A lot of things, when they’re new and shiny, lead to increased physical activity, which sometimes lasts long,” says Elena Kuo, “That’s why it’s a pretty exciting finding.”
Being physically active has many benefits for kids: It reduces obesity (肥胖)risk and improves overall physical and mental health, promotes social and emotional development and boosts academic performance. The WHO (World Health Organization)recommends that schoolchildren get 60 minutes of mild to energetic activity every day. Most kids fall far short of that goal. Globally,81 percent of 11-to 17-year-olds fail to reach that level, according to an analysis reported in the Lancet.
Scientists across the globe are studying how to make full use of the opportunity that playgrounds provide. Research teams are using digital cameras, GPS tags and other wearable technology to study how kids behave on playgrounds and are conducting random controlled trials to assess whether certain playground features, programs and designs can encourage kids to move more.
32. What may be the primary reason for the school’s playground makeover?
A. To improve the appearance of the playground.
B. To equip the local community with sports facilities.
C. To increase students’ participation in physical activity.
D. To support a study on the impact of playground design.
33. What do Elena Kuo’ words “a pretty exciting finding” refer to?
A. The new and shiny playground facilities.
B. The continued impact of the makeover.
C. The overall benefits of exercises for children.
D. The passion of kids for physical activity.
34. What research method was used in the study of Elena Kuo’ team?
A. Observing and tracking children’s behavior.
B. Interviewing students and teachers randomly.
C. Assessing children’s physical and mental problems.
D. Comparing their data with WHO’s activity guidelines.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Scientists are worrying about the safety of playgrounds.
B. Scientists are updating playgrounds with modern equipment.
C. Scientists are applying technology to encourage kids to move.
D. Scientists are studying playgrounds to boost kids’ physical activity.

A simple sheet of paper holds endless possibilities. 36 But if you learn a few basic folding techniques, you could be making a variety of interesting objects. There’s a good chance that an expert folder somewhere has made an origami version of almost anything you can imagine.
Origami is the art of folding paper into three-dimensional figures. They can be people, animals, and objects. The word origami is Japanese. 37 Some historians believe that it was first practiced in China while others think it was begun in Japan.
One of the most fascinating aspects of origami is how a simple sheet of paper can be transformed into something beautiful and complex. Origami begins with sheets of special paper, usually six inches on each side. The paper is generally white on one side and colored on the other side. 38
Beginners are often taught several folds and bases which are the starting shapes for other more complicated figures. Some basic folds are the valley fold, mountain fold, petal fold, and reverse fold. 39 Once a folder has learned these basic elements, he or she can progress to more complex figures.
40 It is not uncommon for people to spend a great deal of time creating original pieces of origami in designs they have invented themselves. For example, one man created an origami model of the Starship Enterprise from the popular television show Star Trek. It took him a month to design the piece.
A. Origami can be both a hobby and an art form.
B. The origin of origami itself, however, is unclear.
C. It is thin, which allows it to be folded many times.
D. You could write a note, type a story, or wrap a small gift.
E. Modern-day folders have experimented with other materials.
F. What we do know is that origami was clearly developed in Japan.
G. These folds are used to create bases, such as the kite, bird, and frog.

The Chinese idiomatic term tieqiubiao, or “putting on autumn fat”, means gaining a little weight in early autumn by eating meals rich 56 protein and fat, including stewed meats, dumplings and nuts.
Since ancient times, people 57 (measure)their weight at lixia, one of the 24 solar terms that marks the beginning of summer, and compared it to their weight at liqiu, the beginning of autumn. This 58 (compare)helps them figure out how much weight they’ve lost during the hot months, hoping to gain sufficient weight 59 (weather)the upcoming cold season.
This autumn, however, many are choosing to depart from tradition and instead shaking off the extra weight by eating what 60 (refer)to as qingshi, or literally, “light food.”
“I think it’s 61 post-Olympic phenomenon. After you spent the summer 62 (watch)those well-shaped athletes on TV, you tend to reflect on your diet at midnight,” Li Xinwei, a college student in Beijing, told Beijing Review.
Li’s words reflect a broader trend 63 (influence)by the recent Paris Olympic Games, 64 has encouraged interest in athletes’ light food diets on social media platforms. This shift highlights a growing awareness of nutrition and body image among younger generations in China. As young people 65 (active)favor lighter foods, they are also contributing to the growth of the healthy food economy.

After the pandemic, it was the tail end of the depression, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. Five years earlier, my Dad had drowned in Pitt Lake with no pension, benefits, or social assistance.
We relied on the Salvation Army to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were second- hand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our soles (鞋底) were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have “French Toast” ready for us. This was bread deep-fried in lard. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but if Mum couldn't pay it, we knew we would be evicted right after Christmas on the first of January. These were hard and sad years, but we never complained.
Christmas was approaching, and we received a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund for social services. It was four days before Christmas, and Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She sadly told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling snow, and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots which weren't patched, with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of twenty-three dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was very excited, as I hurried up the road to catch the bus. It was only half a mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized that at our house, we had nothing for Christmas goodies.
As I continued walking I began to feel lost. I was seventeen years old, and I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots while Mum was home in tears. As I arrived at the bus stop, the driver opened his big bus door…

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
One possible version:
The bus drove off without me,and I realized what I should do. I found a big grocery store nearby. Into the store I went, brimming with happiness and excitement. I realized that the dollars I had worked so hard for went a long way for groceries. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas treats. I spent every dime of my hard-earned money. Although it was not easy for me to carry those groceries half a mile to our house,I felt as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulder.
Quietly piling the groceries against the door,I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face! When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there astonished. Holding back the tears,I said“Merry Christmas Mother! ”I had a lot of explaining to do as we unpacked all the food and put it away. That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum. To see my Mother’s prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry Christmas for us after all!

You’ll be able to visit it all through the summer until the1st of October, when it will be closed again. It’s well worth a visit. You’ll need a whole day just to wander around its splendid rooms. Of particular interest is the Dining Room in the West Wing with its fascinating collection of china, dating back to the 17th century. You should also take advantage of its wonderful grounds. You can even have your lunch in the open-air restaurant behind the castle, a setting with no air conditioning. Castle Howard is a great day out for all the family with its reasonable prices too! For a family tour, the children get in free of charge. That’s all for today, listeners. But don’t miss next week’s program.
