If you have a sweet tooth, you might worry about eating too much sugar. If so, natural sweeteners are
just the ticket.
From the time we are born, we have a natural fondness for sweets. This sometimes changes as we get
older, but many of us still eat too much sugar. Doctors suggest consuming no more than 25 to 36 grams of
added sugar per day. Yet a lot of us eat more than that without knowing it. Consuming too much can lead to
serious health problems. To protect their health, many people are choosing natural sweeteners.
Here are a few popular sources:
Honey
People have relied on honey to sweeten food since the beginning of written history. people have
believed in honey’s benefits for just as long. Modern studies show that honey can even help keep your heart
healthy.
Dates(枣)
This sweet, sticky fruit grows on palm trees and is nutrient rich. Dates, which are high in fiber, can be
used to sweeten anything from salads to milkshakes.
Monk fruit (罗汉果) powder
For centuries people have used monk fruit for health purposes, making it a very popular Chinese
medicine. Today the native Chinese fruit is also used as a natural sweetener in its powdered form. The
powder has zero calories, and you only need a small amount to add sweetness. It’s more than 150 times
sweeter than regular sugar. The powder is a great choice for those with diabetes(糖尿病) because it doesn’t
raise blood sugar levels.
Stevia (甜叶菊)
Stevia is another sweetener that comes in a powder. It comes from the small stevia bush and can help
with weight loss.
Maple syrup(枫糖浆)
One of the most used natural sweeteners is a syrup that comes from maple trees. Pure maple syrup
boasts a great number of health benefits. It has even been studied for its ability to slow the growth of cancer
cells.
The next time your sweet tooth demands something sweet, feel free to give in. Just be sure to keep it
natural.

Before Chu Wenwen, 27, stepped on the stage of this year’s UN Biodiversity Conference opening
ceremony on Oct 11 and gave a speech, she had practiced hundreds of times in front of a beaver (河狸) nest.
As the youth representative to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 15), Chu shared
her story of protecting endangered beavers and called on 1 million post-1990s to join her efforts.
“With our joined efforts, the number of beaver nests has increased from 162 to 190 over the past four
years. It’s a 20-percent jump for the population of the animal,” Chu said at the meeting.
Known as the “Beaver Princess”, Chu lives a life surrounded by wild animals. Since she was 2, she has
made friends with beavers, snow leopards, wild horses and golden eagles. When she was 7, she got a camera
from her father, an animal conservationist (保护者), and developed a deep love for these creatures. That’s
why she chose to return home after graduating in 2017 and follow in her father’s footsteps.
“In the beginning, I often saw beavers injured or dead from fighting for habitat, since willow shrubs (灌
木柳) were reducing in the area,” said Chu. “I cried for them and decided to do something.”
In 2018, Chu started the “beaver canteen” program and planned to plant shrubs for the beavers but
found that it might cost more than 2 million yuan. To raise money, she opened a Douyin account and posted
videos showing how beavers build dams and how she rescued wild animals. She also livestreamed (直播) to
let internet users know how the beavers ate the shrubs she planted with their support. Through her efforts, a
super canteen of about 410,000 saplings (树苗 ) of willow shrubs was built with money from those
post-1990s internet users.
Now, Chu is working on a new program called the Beavers’ Ark, a hospital for injured wild animals.
Earlier this year, Chu received a poisoned vulture (秃鹰). She took care of it carefully. After many days, the
vulture was released to nature once it was fully recovered.
So far, Chu has rescued more than 60 state-protected animals ranging foxes and lynxes (山猫 ) to
golden eagles. “We think what we have done is meaningful. We will continue to encourage more people,
especially the youth, to participate in nature conservation,” Chu said.
69. What do we know about Chu?
A. She went to the same university as her father.
B. She increased the number of beavers on her own.
C. She called on many people to help protect beavers.
D. She has contributed to protecting beavers since age 7.
70. What inspired Chu to take care of wild animals?
A. The beauty of the wild. B. Her deep love for them.
C. The cry for help from her father. D. Her wish to become “Beaver Princess”.

Motivated (有内驱力的) or Overachieving?
Everyone has the occasional classmate who hands in his work ahead of time with really beautiful
handwriting. Some teachers may cheerfully get the homework by saying “Of course you did it early. I’m
sure you’ve done a good job!” Some teachers may feel annoyed because “The deadline is not until next
Friday.” Behind this student’s back are tons of whispers from his classmates, “Ugh, he is such an
overachiever and it’s so annoying ...”
If you ask the same student to explain his behavior, he probably says that he is simply “motivated”.
Such students refuse to call themselves overachievers but prefer “motivated” instead. They want to shy away
from the unpleasant term “overachiever” but choose to embrace the word “motivated”.
Why is the term “overachiever” used as an insult (侮辱)? Do we not all work hard to achieve our goals?
Why does the “motivated” student not proudly call himself an “overachiever”?
In my personal experience, being called an overachiever in front of my classmates is not pleasant at all.
The word is often connected with an unkind smile or sometimes a hint of jealousy (嫉妒). “Overachiever”
carries the implied (暗指的) sense which “over” lends it – you have done too much and you have gone too
far. Anyway, it is beyond the proper degree and just annoying to those students who refuse to put in the
effort themselves and get unhappy with you for doing so.
A student would rather think of himself as an excellent student and it is motivation that drives him to do
his best. What is the implied meaning of “motivated”? Connected with positive words like willpower, spirit
and determination, the “motivated” student would appear to be competing in an event of the brain Olympics.
Although there are differences in their implications, the student who calls himself “motivated” could
actually be a secret overachiever, going over the top for all his work; while the “overachiever” is nothing
more than a motivated student, driven by the simple desire to do well and willing to put in time and effort. In
fact, the choice lies within the student: to overachieve or not to overachieve; to find the motivation to do
well and be driven by it, or to sit back and blame others for overachieving to hide his inability to achieve.
73. According to the passage, overachievers _____.
A. are popular with their classmates B. are much loved by their teachers
C. look down on others for being slow D. hand in homework ahead of time
74. The word “embrace” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_____”.
A. accept B. explain C. doubt D. understand
8 / 9
75. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Teachers expect students to benefit from their extra work.
B. Students compete with each other to become overachievers.
C. Classmates may laugh at overachievers to hide their inability to achieve.
D. The writer has some pleasant experiences of being called an overachiever.
76. The writer probably agrees that _____.
A. students shouldn’t be encouraged to be overachievers
B. students without motivation will become overachievers
C. motivated students make better progress than overachievers
D. motivated students have something in common with overachievers

九、根据短文内容回答问题。
Chatbots
What if instead of clicking on link after link on a company’s website, you could type a question and get
an immediate, customized answer? Some companies are working to make this a reality using chatbots.
Chatbots are computer programs that can communicate with human beings by phone, on messaging apps or
on websites.
There are two types of chatbots: open and closed. A closed chatbot follows a script (脚本),which may or
may not involve using AI (artificial intelligence) to understand users’ messages. An open chatbot uses AI
both to figure out what users want and to offer solutions. Open chatbots are able to learn from their
conversations and thus improve their ability to communicate over time. This means that open chatbots can
respond to a wider range of questions, compared with closed chatbots. Communicating with them feels more
natural, but if they have not been correctly trained, users may have a bad experience with them.
One significant advantage of chatbots is that they are available all the time, even in the middle of the
night. Plus, a single chatbot can satisfy multiple users at once. This means that users can get immediate
answers to their questions rather than waiting for a human representative. Chatbots have the potential to
overcome several technological problems people face. These include difficulty in searching websites and
trouble finding basic information and answers to simple questions.
However, in order for chatbots to work, humans are still indispensable (不可或缺的). Someone has to
program the chatbots initially, train them, and maintain and improve the chatbot system. Further, even open
chatbots may not have the answers to detailed questions, and many people simply prefer speaking to a
human rather than a chatbot. Thus, chatbots are unlikely to completely replace human agents. Rather, they
will help users resolve simple problems so that customer service representatives can focus on more difficult
issues.
