China’s Generation Z skateboarders have rocked the Asian Games — bagging three of four gold medals. It was not only just about the medals, but also about the energy and the uniqueness they bring into the Games.
On September 27, the youngest member of the Chinese delegation (代表团) Cui Chenxi,13, wrote her name in Chinese sports history after becoming the youngest Asian Games champion for China. In the same match, 18-year-old Zeng Wenhui bagged silver in women’s street. In the men’s park, 15-year-old Chen Ye finished first. In men’s street, China’s 16-year-old Zhang Jie snatched a gold while his teammate, 19-year-old Su Jianjun, won a bronze.
No doubt that skateboarding is a young and up-and-coming sport. In women’s street final, seven of the eight contestants are under 18. Women’s street final was even attended by the youngest athlete of the Asian Games at the age of nine. These athletes, however, showed the excellent athleticism just like their role models, passed down from generation to generation.
Speaking with the Global Times, the young medalists displayed a similar fighting spirit just like the veteran(资深的) athletes, but they also showed something noticeably (显著的) different — their relaxed mind toward pressure, their independence growing up as an athlete, and the support they received from their parents.
The Gen-Z athletes also share similar positive family atmosphere. Usually training on their own without a professional team, they received the support from their family. For Chen Ye, the training area made by Chen’s father became the focus of media attention after his win. Chen expressed his thanks to his father as the person he most wanted to thank after winning the gold medal.
The Chinese skateboarding team continues to make breakthroughs, and the future looks bright. Showered by love, support and confidence, they are never afraid to share their ambition to go to the top.
4. Which is the percentage of the Chinese teams winning gold medals in skateboarding?
A. 30%. B. 50%. C. 75%. D. 80%.
5. What does the underlined word “snatched” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Won. B. Missed. C. Expected. D. Lost.
6. What do the veteran athletes usually show in a match?
A. The relaxed mind. B. Their understanding.
C. Their imagination. D. The fighting spirit.
7. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The advantage of showing thanks. B. The importance of family support.
C. The ways to attract media attention. D. The reasons for winning the gold medal.

September 23, 2023 marks the start of a new season - but what exactly you should call that season depends on where in the world you are. In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn. But if you go to America, you’ll find that people use both “fall” and “autumn” when speaking about this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names. So what is it about the season that makes it so special?
According to Dictionary.com, “fall” isn’t a modern nickname that followed the more traditional “autumn”. The two terms (术语) are actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other.
Before either word appeared in the dictionary, the season between summer and winter was known as harvest, or hærfest in Old English. The word is of Germanic stock (日耳曼语系) and meant “picking” or “plucking”, a nod to the act of gathering and keeping crops before winter.
In the 1500s, English speakers began calling the seasons separating the cold and warm months “fall of the leaf” or “spring of the leaf”, or “fall” and “spring” for short. Both terms were simple, but for some reason, only “spring” stayed in Britain. By the end of the 1600s,“autumn”, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, had overtaken “fall” as the standard British term for the third season.
Around the same time when England adopted “autumn”, the first-ever British American colonists (殖民者) were travelling to North America. With them they brought the words “fall” and “autumn”. Although the word “fall” fell out of fashion in England, it became a part of the local language by the time when America won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before winter is still a uniquely American behavior.
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. “Fall” is unacceptable in America.
B. “Fall” is more commonly used in Britain.
C. The start of a new season is always the same.
D. Two words are used for the third season in America.
9. What was the season between summer and winter called before “fall” and “autumn” appeared?
A. Picking. B. Spring. C. Harvest. D. Gathering.
10. What does the author say about “spring” in paragraph 4?
A. It had more staying power. B. It was much easier.
C. It was first used in the 1600s. D. It was a French word,
11. “Fall” was kept in American English even if ______.
A. it was unpopular among the locals B. it wasn’t used in England
C. “autumn” was the standard word D. “autumn” was a unique term
D
A recent study says volunteering can be good for your health. Could it offer a way through the youth mental health crisis (危机)?
Kids and teenagers who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. That’s according to new research. published in JAMA Network Open in May. It found that volunteering through school or community groups is connected with better happiness among teens.
Kids who took part in community service were 34% more likely to be in very good physical (身体的) health than those who didn’t, the study found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered doing well in general. Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety than those who didn’t. The findings come from study data (数据) provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged6 to 17. About half of those parents reported that their kids did volunteer work.
Parents answered questions about their kids’ health and community-service activity. But a parent might not know if their child experienced anxiety. This type of data also can’t prove cause and effect. It can only uncover links. So it’s not possible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health. It could be that people in good health are more likely to have the energy or desire to volunteer.
But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health. In recent years, rates of feeling anxious have risen among young people. More than 40% of high school students reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness. There’s a clear need for effective mental health resources (资源). Giving back to the community may be one such resource.
Previous research has also found links between volunteering and happiness among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. It makes them feel connected to those around them.
12. What does the new study find about volunteering?
A. It has few links to feeling happy.
B. Ii is considered to be the best activity.
C. It hardly improves children’s mental health.
D. It helps children to be more physically healthy.
13. What does the author most want to say in paragraph 4?
A. The recent study is imperfect. B. The data parents provide is very useful.
C. Children feel anxious when volunteering. D. Parents answer questions in a simple way.
14. What is a problem faced by teenagers in recent years?
A. Communities don’t offer important data. B. Hopelessness often troubles them.
C. There are no good mental health resources. D. They may lack experience in service.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Kids Can Be Service Stars B. Mental Health Problems Becomes Serious
C. Does Volunteering Help Kids? D. Does Voluntary Work Need Resources?

It was a warm Sunday. Stella just settled down with a book in the front yard, when her friend Bog came over with his 6-year-old sister.
“Stella, please! I need you to look after Hazel! I have a lecture to attend this morning.” Bog begged.
Stella was not happy to babysit a little girl. However, Bog didn’t give her any other choice. He dropped Hazel off and quickly ran away before she could say anything. Unwillingly, Stella turned to Hazel.
“Just stay there and don’t cause any trouble.” Stella said coldly.
To her surprise, the little girl smiled and started to draw beside her. For the next hour, Havel was absorbed in drawing without making a single noise. Gradually, Stella’s annoyance disappeared and got used to the company of the little girl. After a while, Hazel approached Stella and showed her a picture, in which two girls held hands and kept smiling at each other.
“Look, it’s you and me,” Hazel said in a sweet voice.
Stella’s heart softened as she looked at the drawing. She felt ashamed of treating Haze l so badly. Setting her book aside, Stella smiled and said, “I really love it. Thank you!”
Then Stella joined Hazel to color it together. Just as they were lost in the world of colors, a sudden phone ringing broke the silence. It was a phone call from one of Stella’s friends to remind her about the plan to go skating on the square. Stella’s heart sank because she had forgotten all about it. She was torn between the desire to go skating and her duty to look after Hazel. As Stella was wondering what she should do, Haze l looked up at her with hopeful eyes.

【47题答案】
【答案】“Of course,” Stella said with a forced smile. Although Stella was worried that taking a little girl to skate might prevent her from having fun on the ice, she couldn’t bear the thought of disappointing such a sweet girl. Hazel’s face lit up and they quickly gathered things and headed to the square. Upon their arrival, Stella introduced Hazel to her friends, who welcomed her with open arms. One of them even rented a pair of skating shoes from the nearby shop for Hazel.
Stella and her friends helped Hazel put on the rented skating shoes. Then they guided her onto the ice. Sensing Hazel’s fear, Stella skated closer and held her little hand. Step by step, they moved forward. Stella’s gentle encouragement and support helped Hazel gain confidence and Hazel’s initial fear gradually gave way to excitement as she learned how to keep balance on the ice. Just then, another girl skated by and took Hazel’s another hand. Together, they had a fantastic time on the ice.
