Marly’s class was studying China. One day her teacher, Miss Singh, told the students that kites were invented in China more than 2,000 years ago. “To this day,” she said, “Most Chinese people have a passion for kites. On sunny, windy days, people of all ages go to the parks to fly them.”
Miss Singh explained that Chinese kites are always colorful and are often beautifully decorated to look like dragons, butterflies, or other creatures. Then she announced an unusual homework assignment. She asked each student to make a kite and bring it to class. “The Chinese make kites that represent something important to them,” she said. “Each of you should make a kite that signifies something important to you.”
Marly did not like the assignment. “I don’t know how to make a kite,” she grumbled as she walked home. Then she decided to ask her dad for help. Marly explained to Papa that the kite had to mean something to her.
“What do you think of when you see a kite?” Papa asked.
As Marly thought for a moment. Her mind was filled with images of things that flew, such as planes and birds. “Eagles,” she said.
Papa nodded and agreed that an eagle design would make an excellent kite. “They are proud and fierce,” he said.
Marly and Papa got two rods of balsa wood and bound them into the shape of a cross. Papa cut a square out of an old white bed sheet, and Marly painted a great golden eagle on the sheet. Then they stretched the sheet over the rods and made a diamond-shaped kite. Finally, Marly tied a long tail to the bottom of the kite, and it was finished.
Next, Marly and Papa took the kite to the park and tested it. The kite flew perfectly. Marly jerked the string and made the kite swoop so that the eagle dived to the earth and flew back up.
“Wow, ” Marly cried, “This kite really flies!”

Recently, a Douyin influencer named “Xiaozhang the worker” went popular because of her “How-to” video series. In the videos, she teaches the most basic life skills, such as how to see a concert and how to take the underground. She has quickly got over 2 million followers on Douyin. The information from Google showed that nearly 40 percent of people born between 1997 and 2012 prefer Douyin for online searches.
In some way, the rising popularity of “How-to” videos shows the fact that young people’s search habits have changed. It’s popular around the world that young people use social media platforms for searching.
Li Zhouzi, a 14-year-old from Shanxi, likes to search on Bilibili. She says that by doing this, she gets information more quickly and easily. For example, when using traditional search engines for a concept of physics, she would always lose her way in a sea of hard-to-get terms. Instead, videos on Bilibili can offer detailed explanations that are often clearer than those she can find somewhere else.
Being able to form links with real people can also give searchers a strong sense of trust. Hu Tian is a 13-year-old girl from Sichuan. She likes searching for information on Xiaohongshu, a lifestyle-sharing platform. She can see notes with photos and texts posted by people who also have a liking for it. “I trust them more than some reviews from unknown people on search engines,” she said.
Like Hu, many young people search for lighter topics on social media platforms while they leave the heavier topics to traditional search engines. Zhou Yaokai, a Senior 3 student from Sichuan is one of them. When forming his personal opinions on hot topics, he prefers to turn to official websites of organizations. “In this way, the information is worth believing,” he said.
48. The author mentions the “How-to” video series to ____________________..
A. prove Douyin has become the most popular app
B. start talking about young people’s search habit
C. recommend his/her favourite search engine
D. make readers understand basic life skills
49. Which of the following may give HuTian a strong sense of trust?
A. Fantastic stories told by someone unknown.
B. Products recommended by influencers.
C. Notes along with photos from someone.
D. Reviews from some famous people.
50. According to the article, the new searching engines like Douyin have the following advantages except ____________________.
A. young people can get information more quickly and easily by using them.
B. videos on them can provide clearer detailed explanations
C. some video series can teach basic life skills vividly and interestingly
D. they could be of great help if many young people want to search for heavier topics
51. Which shows the structure of the passage?
D

The drum has existed in Chinese civilization for thousands of years and has a deep spiritual meaning which is more than a kind of musical instrument. Confucius regarded the “Drum Dance” highly. It is also the origin of the Chinese phrase “guwu” which means “embolden” (大胆) in English.
The drum was mentioned in Chinese history in the Pottery Age. The Zhou dynasty set up the drum music institution that was responsible (负责的) for the management of officers known as “drum men” and developed a complete drum music system. From then on, drums came to be used in ancient Chinese practices such as sacrifice (祭祀), military (军事), labor (劳动) and other activities.
In ancient China, agriculture was the main form of production and drums were considered indispensable (不可或缺的) for a good harvest. Since the sound of drums echoes that of thunder, it was believed that playing drums could attract rain. So the instrument was used to pray to the gods for good weather and to “communicate” with them.
Drums also played a part in the war. Because of a strong resonance effect (共振作用), the drum’s sound could go very far while increasing fear in the heart of the enemies. So the drum was used as a military booster for a long time.
In the Tang and Song dynasties, the society was developing fast and drums were widely used. The national band, drama, folk art, song and dance, boat racing, lion dance, festival gathering and labor competition were all together with the beats of drums. The sound of drums became synonymous (同义的) with celebrations, filling hearts with joy.
Different types of Chinese drums exist today. For example, “Taiping Drum” is used to express peace and prosperity (繁荣) while “Ansai Waist Drum” is meant to show the spirit of the Loess Plateau (黄土高原) and the heroic character of farmers in Northwest China. Kaifeng has “Pan Drum”, and Luochuan of Shaanxi Province is known for its “Bi Drum.” There are also some cheerful and time-honored drum dances such as “Fengyang Flower Drum” in Anhui Province and “Fishing Basket Flower Drum” in Jiangsu Province.
In a word, drum culture reflects the peace and harmony of Chinese society. For thousands of years, Chinese people have always been expecting peace and satisfaction.
