Exercising regularly not only helps you keep slim, but also improves your overall health and well-being. Different exercises produce different results, as they focus on alternate parts of the body. There are four broad exercise categories: endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance. Many people often only focus on one exercise type, but including all four in your workout will produce better results and reduce your risk of injury.
Endurance
Endurance exercises increase your breathing and heart rate. By doing endurance exercises, you are working to keep your heart, lungs, and blood-flow system healthy while improving your total fitness. Over time these activities will make everyday activities seem easier.
Strength
If you want to build up your muscles, then strength exercises, which are also known as “resistance training”, are right for you. Even the slightest increase in strength can make a huge difference in your ability to carry out daily tasks. Developing strong muscles also reduces your risk of weak bones.
Flexibility
Flexibility exercises help stretch your body’s muscles. This allows for more freedom of movement for other exercises and can also improve your range of motion, posture, ability to breathe deeply, and blood flow. Also, it reduces the muscle tension caused by stress.
Balance
Balance exercises help prevent falls and are especially important to older adults, helping them stay independent. Most good balance exercises are ones that keep you constantly moving with your feet on the ground. Heel-to-toe walking and standing on one foot are simple ways to improve balance.
1. How can a person benefit most from their exercise routine?
A. By having enough rest between their works.
B. By concentrating on one training aspect at a time.
C. By increasing the frequency of their training gradually.
D. By combining all four exercise types together in their workout.
2. Which exercise types are especially good for your muscles?
A. Endurance and Strength. B. Balance and Endurance.
C. Strength and Flexibility. D. Flexibility and Balance.
3. Which part of the body plays the most important role in balance-related exercises?
A. Feet. B. Arms. C. Waist. D. Neck.

When a hurricane hit her hometown, Karen Lauder chose to stay at home because she didn’t know how strong the storm would be. Karen was 84 years old and depended on a wheelchair to get around because she was missing a leg. Her son, Johnny Lauder, tried repeatedly to get her to leave, but she refused.
Johnny and his whole family live within a few blocks of one another. They kept in touch with Karen as the storm continued violently (猛烈地) outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her bottom, Johnny knew he had to take action.
First, Johnny ensured his sons and their pets were taken care of. Then, he jumped out of a window and began to swim. Johnny used to work as a rescue swimmer. He is obviously a strong swimmer, but the flood water was filled with dangerous materials. There was also a strong current (水流), and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen’s. As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to snap selfies (自拍) to show his worried family that he was okay.
Johnny was racing against the clock. He knew he only had a short period of time to get there before the water rose above Karen’s head. It took him 40 minutes to swim four blocks. The sound of Karen shouting inside was music to his ears!
“If it would’ve been 20 minutes later, she wouldn’t be here,” Johnny said. “She’s never been happier to see me.”
Karen is now safe, although she is in the hospital being treated for infections (感染) she got in the water. The family have all lost everything they owned, including their houses, but they’re grateful just to be here.
4. Why did Karen refuse to leave her house when the hurricane came?
A. She was too old to move. B. She missed one of her legs.
C. She thought the storm was not violent. D. She lost her wheelchair and was unable to leave.
5. Why did Johnny take selfies along the way to Karen’s home?
A. To record his swimming trip. B. To report his safety to his family.
C. To warn other rescuers of danger. D. To show off his swimming skills.
6. What does the underlined sentence “The sound of Karen shouting inside was music to his ears!” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Karen was playing music inside.
B. Johnny was too tired to hear anything but music.
C. Johnny felt relieved when hearing Karen shouting.
D. Johnny mistook the sound of water inside as music.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Successful Rescue In A Hurricane B. A Family’s Total Loss In A Strong Current
C. A Race Against The Clock To Snap Selfies D. Johnny’s Working Experience As A Rescue Swimmer
C
Are you looking for something exciting in your life? How about trying a new hobby that gets your heart racing?
You might enjoy running, right? Well, then you’re already on the right track to becoming a trail runner (越野跑选手). It is not so hard as you think. All you need to do is just taking your runs off the pavement and explore some hilly or mountainous trails. Trail running has been popular in recent years and offers a great way to connect with nature while getting an exciting workout.
Not adventurous enough for you? How about trying rock climbing? Climbers climb walls or natural rock formations, using their strength and problem-solving skills. There’s no age limit for this sport, and it can be a great way to build confidence and overcome fears. For example, Sarah, a young girl from a small town, started rock climbing at the age of 12 and has since fallen in love with the sport. She says, “Every time I reach the top of a climb, I feel a sense of success that’s hard to describe.”
Some people take their adventures to even greater heights by trying wingsuit flying. In this extreme sport, participants (参与者) wear a special suit that allows them to fly through the air like a bird. It requires a lot of training and courage, as there are significant risks involved. However, for those who are interested in it, there is no feeling like flying freely.
It seems that people are always coming up with new and exciting ways to challenge themselves and experience the excitement of adventure. Whether it’s paragliding, whitewater rafting, or even urban exploration, there’s something out there for everyone.
8. What can we learn from the passage about trail running?
A. It’s rather boring. B. It’s too challenging.
C. It’s very frightening. D. It’s not that difficult.
9 Why does the author mention the example in paragraph 3?
A. To stress the body condition required for rock climbing.
B. To show that rock climbing can make people confident and brave.
C. To keep readers from trying rock climbing when they are too young.
D. To explain that only those who fall in love with rock climbing can succeed.
10. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Trail running. B. Rock climbing. C. Wingsuit flying. D. Flying following birds.
11. Why do people try these extreme sports?
A. To become well-known and popular. B. To seek for excitement and challenge.
C. To show off their abilities and courage. D. To make more friends with common interest.
D
As a saying goes, love your neighbor as yourself. Yet we all struggle and often come up short in loving our neighbors. Too often we miss the opportunity to be available to our neighbors in need of help and care. When a neighbor approaches, we may concentrate too much on our own problems or care too much about our loved ones to realize that we’re not paying attention to the neighbor.
Although we know loving our neighbors is the right and moral thing to do, it takes courage to live it out. It means stepping out of our comfort zone. Jill Briscoe, an author, tells a story about when she heard gossip that her neighbor’s husband had left her. She knew the neighbor casually. When they spoke, they talked about the weather. She realized that in her community most people didn’t know each other.
Jill struggled with what to do. Finally, she gathered the courage to walk over and pay a call. When her neighbor opened the door, Jill shared that she had heard on the grapevine that her husband had left. Could she do anything? The woman burst into tears and said, “Come in, come in.” Jill spent the entire morning listening, putting her arm around her neighbor and having coffee. It was the start of a relationship.
In these challenging times, let us choose to be the neighbor our faith calls us to be. When we do, love wins and makes the world a better place for everyone. “All of us, at some time or other need help. Whether we’re giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to the world. That’s one of the things that connect us with neighbors — in our own way, each of us is a giver and a receiver,” said Fred Rogers, who created and hosted the preschool television series “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”.
12. Why are we not paying attention to the neighbors?
A. They are familiar to us. B. They always trouble us.
C. We are not willing to do so. D. We care about our loved ones more.
13. What effect did Jill’s visit have on her neighbor?
A. Anger B. Happiness C. Embarrassment D. Comfort
14. What can be inferred from Fred Rogers’ words?
A. Nobody is a lonely island in life. B. Giving help means receiving help.
C. It is easy to know about the neighbors. D. Good neighborhood relationship is beneficial.
15. What do we know about Jill and Fred?
A. They are knowledgeable. B. They are excellent as neighbors.
C. They are well-known for writing. D. They are hard-working as reporters.
